The taught component of the programme includes a compulsory lecture-based module in systems and cellular pharmacology, which is complemented by a laboratory-based practical module and optional lecture modules in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology and the pharmacology of inflammation. Project based elements include a literature research module, a research design module and a laboratory based practical research project.

The MSc in Cancer Research is aimed at life science and medical graduates who wish to specialise in the field of cancer research. The purpose of the programme is to provide students with extensive research-laboratory training and an overarching theoretical knowledge of cancer biology. The course has a unique, research-oriented approach with taught modules, resulting in an internationally recognised MSc degree. The obtained knowledge and skillset enables our graduates to pursue a career as a research-scientist in academia, in the medical field or in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical sector.

Specifically the course aims to:

1. Provide a broad and in-depth knowledge in molecular-, cellular- and clinical cancer biology.

2. Provide knowledge in a broad range of classic as well as state-of-the-art research technologies applied in cancer research.

3. Provide training in laboratory and research skills both at basic and advanced levels by assigning students a laboratory research project through which they will develop both technical competencies and critical thinking abilities.

4. Facilitate the interdisciplinary approach of cancer research by engaging clinical and nonclinical scientists, enabling the cross-fertilisation of ideas and thus promoting medically-focused research.

The MSc in Cancer research is a modular course, consisting of 30% taught material (equalling 25 ECTS units) combined with a strong, 70% research element (equal to 65 ECTS) allowing ample time for the students to gain in-depth research exposure.

The course material is delivered using a blended learning format (combination of face-to-face/traditional-format lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning and assignments) that will not only deliver the information the students have to attain, but also trains the students how to research independently and evaluate the information critically, which are key and valuable skills for a highly qualified cancer research scientist.

The research element will encompass two semesters. After an induction phase, the students will work on one research project throughout the two semesters allowing them to acquire a broad range of research skills ranging from state-of-the-art technologies through data interpretation to experimental design and data presentation. Available research project titles in participating laboratories of the School of Natural Sciences and other programme-associated Institutes will be provided to the students from which they can choose their project options. The students will write the MSc thesis on the findings of their research project..

The Pharmacology and Drug Discovery MSc course has been designed to react to the increasing demand for suitably trained professional pharmacologists. This is essential to speed up the critical task of translating basic laboratory medical research into commercially-ready medical biotechnology and drugs that can be used to diagnose and treat patients.

The Pharmacology and Drug Discovery course also encompasses an emerging area of science that is known as ‘Translational Medicine’ and needs a new breed of Pharmacologist who can apply basic science knowledge and skills to experimental study design, management and data analysis, and who understands the legislation and other regulatory procedures surrounding disease treatment.

The course will also cover relevant biotechnical innovations associated with pharmacology and drug discovery, as well as both classical clinical trial design and health-outcomes research.

The MSc Pharmacology and Drug Discovery with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Work Placement

About the course

The research conducted is focused on utilising integrated physiological and pharmacological approaches with biochemical and molecular techniques to study disease states, underlying mechanisms of disease and drug actions, with a view to identifying novel mechanisms, therapeutic targets and agents with a clinical and translational focus.

This is a one-year research programme which is assessed by a written dissertation and by an oral examination. It is suited to those who wish to pursue research at a level beyond that of an undergraduate degree and will give a good basic training in laboratory work. It is not suitable for candidates who wish to undertake a masters degree with major and examined course components in order to enhance their undergraduate training.

The course introduces students to research skills and specialist knowledge. Its main aims are:

• to give students with relevant experience at first-degree level the opportunity to carry out focussed research in the discipline under close supervision; and

• to give students the opportunity to acquire or develop skills and expertise relevant to their research interests.

In addition to the research training provided within the Department, as part of the Graduate School of Life Sciences students will have access to courses to widen their experience and to enable them to acquire generic skills.

Course detail

By the end of the programme, students will have:

• a comprehensive understanding of techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature, applicable to their own research;
• demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field;
• shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies;
• demonstrated some self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research.

Format

The MPhil is a 12 month full-time programme and involves minimal formal teaching: students are integrated into the research culture of the Department by joining a research group. Most research training is provided within the group structure and overseen by their research supervisor, but they are also expected to attend the Department’s programme of research seminars and other graduate courses and such other skills training offered by the Graduate School as is relevant to their education. Informal opportunities to develop research skills also exist through mentoring by fellow students and members of staff.

Assessment

The scheme of examination for the MPhil in Biological Science shall consist of a thesis, of not more than 20,000 words in length, excluding figures, tables, footnotes, appendices and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Biology. The examination shall include an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Continuing

Those who wish to progress to a PhD after completing an MPhil will be required to pass the masters degree at a sufficient level to satisfy the Departmental Graduate Education Committee that they have the skills and ability to achieve the higher degree.

This is an exciting time to be involved in cancer therapeutics. Based upon a greater understanding of the molecular aspects of cancer, new opportunities for therapeutic intervention have emerged that are effectively 'target orientated'. These new therapeutics are quite distinct from the classical chemotherapeutic agents and they offer the prospect of truly selective cancer therapies that are tailored towards the individual patient's tumour. Cancer pharmacology plays a key role in drug development. In both the laboratory and the clinic, cancer pharmacology has had to adapt to the changing face of drug development by establishing experimental models and target orientated approaches.

The programme is designed to provide you with a 'state-of-the-art' course in modern cancer pharmacology that meets the demand of employers and provides an expert view of the available cancer medicines and the development of new cancer therapies.

It promotes advanced scholarship within specialised areas at the same time as the development of key transferable skills (in IT, communication, and time management) and research techniques. The taught component of the course provides the in depth knowledge and skills necessary to work in cancer research, and is delivered across 2 semesters through lectures, workshops, practicals and 1-to-1 tutorials with ICT staff. You will then join one of our research teams to complete the MSc research project.

This MSc offers specialised training in biomedical science with exposure to leading research scientists, biotechnologists and the pharmaceutical industry. It provides a foundation for a career in drug development and a comprehensive programme in research methodology, the translation of basic research into therapies and the governance and social implications of health research.

Degree information

Students develop practical understanding of research methods in biomedical science and knowledge of cutting-edge research alongside practical experience in laboratory, clinical or epidemiological research. They develop the ability to evaluate scientific literature and gain an appreciation of ethical and governance requirements of research, including 'Good Clinical Practice' principles. Graduates of this MSc go on to have successful careers in both academia and the industry.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma consisting of six core modules (120 credits) is offered. Employability

The ability to think rationally and to process data clearly and accurately are highly valued by employers. Mathematics graduates earn on average 50% more than most other graduates. The most popular areas are the actuarial profession, the financial sector, IT, computer programming and systems administration, and opportunities within business and industry where employers need mathematicians for research and development, statistical analysis, marketing and sales.

Facilities

The Aubrey Truman Reading Room, located in the centre of the Department of Mathematics, houses the departmental library and computers for student use, and is a popular venue for students to work independently on the regular exercise sheets set by their lecturers, and to discuss mathematics together.

The main university library, the Learning and Information Centre (LIC), contains a notably extensive collection of mathematics books.

As part of our expansion, we are building the Computational Foundry on our Bay Campus for computer and mathematical sciences.
