This programme teaches advanced experimental approaches to dissecting the mechanisms of drug action (pharmacology), a science that has seen innovative theoretical and technical development at UCL for over a century.

About this degree

In addition to providing experience of both classical and modern pharmacological techniques, the programme will help develop skills for literature search-based data acquisition and analysis; written and verbal communication of science; abstract writing; poster preparation; graphical processing; image preparation for publication; writing a scientific paper; and giving research presentations.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (75 credits), one optional module (15 credits), and a research project (90 credits).

This MSc offers specialised training in biomedical science with exposure to leading research scientists, biotechnologists and the pharmaceutical industry. It provides a foundation for a career in drug development and a comprehensive programme in research methodology, the translation of basic research into therapies and the governance and social implications of health research.

About this degree

Students develop practical understanding of research methods in biomedical science and knowledge of cutting-edge research alongside practical experience in laboratory, clinical or epidemiological research. This is an exciting time to be involved in cancer therapeutics. Based upon a greater understanding of the molecular aspects of cancer, new opportunities for therapeutic intervention have emerged that are effectively 'target orientated'. These new therapeutics are quite distinct from the classical chemotherapeutic agents and they offer the prospect of truly selective cancer therapies that are tailored towards the individual patient's tumour. Cancer pharmacology plays a key role in drug development. In both the laboratory and the clinic, cancer pharmacology has had to adapt to the changing face of drug development by establishing experimental models and target orientated approaches.

The programme is designed to provide you with a 'state-of-the-art' course in modern cancer pharmacology that meets the demand of employers and provides an expert view of the available cancer medicines and the development of new cancer therapies.

It promotes advanced scholarship within specialised areas at the same time as the development of key transferable skills (in IT, communication, and time management) and research techniques. The programme draws on strengths within the university and medical area within disease discovery and treatment. The major innovation of Insulin was first developed at University of Aberdeen in the 1920s, winning the inventors a Nobel Prize and giving the world a major step forward in the management and regulation of insulin. Since this time the discovery of drug process, treatment and design has been developed and researched at Aberdeen. The University is also known for its research in food and nutrition, bacteria, gut issues researched at the world famous Rowett Institute and growing knowledge of disease process and latest innovative treatments.

Clinical pharmacology forms a critical part of the drug development process and our graduates are employed in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. This M.Sc. course is administered by the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in the Trinity Centre of Health Sciences, St James's Hospital, Dublin. It has been developed to provide medical and science graduates with specialist knowledge and skills in the area of clinical pharmacology and pharmaceutical medicine. In-take is on an annual basis. Components of the course include principles of:

Pharmacology and biostatistics
New drug development and the regulatory environment
Pharmacoeconomics and rational use of drugs
Pharmacovigilance and drug information

The course involves completion of taught modules and the additional undertaking of a research project. The modules consist of formal teaching and personal assignments and are run over five terms on a part-time basis (approximately two modules per term). Some of the modules are undertaken by way of distance learning. In addition, the students are assigned a research project (including field work), to be submitted as a dissertation for the degree of M.Sc. only.

The syllabus is compliant with PharmaTrain, an EU funded Innovative Medicines Initiative (http://www.pharmatrain.eu).

Students are assessed by way of continuous assessment and are required to pass written and oral examinations at the end of their course. In addition, they are required to submit a written dissertation on their research project (with the possibility of an oral examination) by the end of the second year of the course.

This course is for pharmacy graduates who gained their degree outside the UK. It enables pharmacists to convert their existing pharmaceutical qualification so it is recognised in Great Britain.

Course outline

Successful completion of the course will allow you to undertake a pre-registration placement, before applying to register as a Pharmacist with The General Pharmaceutical Council. You will also gain an Aston University Diploma. Aston University is not responsible for the provision of a pre-registration training place nor preparation for professional qualifying examinations.

The programme focuses upon new developments in key pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice together with the study of health service delivery and pharmacy law and ethics within the UK.

This course is specifically designed for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who wish to undertake part-time study to prepare them to become a non-medical prescriber. Nurses and midwives will be awarded the NMC recorded qualification (V300 Independent and Supplementary Prescribing) and allied health professionals will be awarded an annotation with the HPC as a Supplementary Prescriber.
The leading principle within the Non-Medical Prescribing course is to prepare you to deliver high quality care by equipping you to:
- Prescribe safely and effectively
- Use resources to your optimum effect for service users
- Improve well-being and reduce inequalities
- Provide evidence-based effective care
- Engage in policy making and actively participate in the multidisciplinary prescribing team

You can expect to study four modules:

•Pharmacology and therapeutics for prescribers (30 credits) will prepare students to understand and apply the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics directly related to prescribing practice. Practitioners will have the opportunity to critically analyse evidence based practice including risk assessment and management and to synthesise information relating to their own area of practice.
•Outline content includes: pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; adverse drug reactions; numeracy; safe principles of prescribing; anatomy and physiology across the life span.
•Professional, legal and ethical issues for prescribers (15 credits) focuses on critically evaluating and synthesising ideas from the evidence in relation to the legal, ethical and professional issues implicit in non-medical prescribing decision making and consultations. Outline content includes: legislation and policies related to prescribing; accountability and responsibility for assessment, diagnosis and prescribing independently and within the multi-disciplinary team; patient safety in supervising, managing and evaluating prescribing decisions; prescribing effectively within a finite prescribing budget.
•Applied prescribing in the clinical context (15 credits) aims to critically evaluate the skills required for a comprehensive consultation for safe effective prescribing. In addition it is designed to promote synthesis of ideas influential in prescribing decision making. Outline content includes: appraisal of self and others regarding consultation skills in achieving medicines adherence; external pressures impacting on prescribing; different management options used to treat patients.
•Prescribing in practice for nurses and midwives / allied health professionals (0 credits) prepares students to prescribe from the British National Formulary as both independent and supplementary prescribers for nurses and midwives or as a supplementary prescriber for allied health professionals. Outline content includes: application of theory to practice; rationale for prescribing decisions; numeracy skills, writing prescriptions; prescribing in a range of scenarios. All practice experiences and practice outcomes for the whole course are based within this module.
Teaching and assessment
Our student-centred and enquiry-based approach to learning incorporates a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies, including; case studies, scenarios, small group work, action learning sets, workshops, pod casts, reflection, student presentations, supervised consultations with service users in practice and clinically focused tutorials. An essential part of the course will take place in practice settings under the guidance of a Designated Medical Practitioner, facilitated by your personal tutor. Students will also be supported by a designated qualified nurse prescriber, lead midwife for education, or supplementary prescriber for allied health, who will take up the role of preceptor at the end of the course.

Expertise
Our course team have a wide range of experience in non-medical prescribing provision. A key strength is that most are, or have been, independent and or supplementary prescribers from primary and secondary care in nursing, midwifery and pharmacy practice. The external examiner is also experienced in non-medical prescribing.

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research.

The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels.

The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The program has strengths in projects covering a wide range of scientific and clinical areas of investigation. The primary aim of our graduate training program is to provide students with the skills necessary to conduct research in pharmacology and therapeutics that can be published in first-rate journals. Thus, an important factor in an applicant's admissibility is a matching of research and professional interests of the student and a faculty member within the program.

Assessment

Assessment is undertaken in all units to check that you have met (or are working towards meeting) the standards expected of all students.

Each unit of study has three summative assessment points and when each is marked you will be provided with feedback to show you where you are meeting/exceeding the standards and where/how you can/should make further improvement.

The final assessment in each of the taught units is a formal written examination. Elsewhere, a range of assessment methods are used. Some may be familiar (e.g. laboratory reports) while others may be less familiar (e.g. research proposals, poster/oral presentations) but each is designed to build upon and extend what is expected of students at postgraduate level.

Careers

In addition to developing your specialist knowledge and understanding, there is an emphasis on developing your approach and attitude to working by emphasising and encouraging the professional standards expected by employers. This is supported by a departmental seminar programme that includes speakers from industry who give you an insight into what they expect from employees.
