The taught component of the programme includes a compulsory lecture-based module in systems and cellular pharmacology, which is complemented by a laboratory-based practical module and optional lecture modules in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology and the pharmacology of inflammation. Project based elements include a literature research module, a research design module and a laboratory based practical research project.

Degree information

In addition to providing experience of both classical and modern pharmacological techniques, the programme will help develop skills for literature search-based data acquisition and analysis; written and verbal communication of science; abstract writing; poster preparation; graphical processing; image preparation for publication; writing a scientific paper; and giving research presentations.

The graduate program in Pharmacology was established in 1951, and currently includes programs in cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, viral pharmacology, free radical biology, and drug development. Additional training programs exist in therapeutics, evidence-based medicine, and clinical investigation. The pharmacology graduate program has strengths in basic science as well as translational research.

The graduate program in Pharmacology is a component of the newly formed Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and formalizes the Department's historical research and academic interactions. Within this new structure, additional research programs reflecting the close association between the disciplines of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and therapeutics are now available. Courses in pharmacology are taught at the undergraduate science, medical, dental, and graduate levels.

The program adheres to an 'apprenticeship' model of graduate training, in which graduate students work in close collaboration with a faculty member who is also their graduate supervisor. The program has strengths in projects covering a wide range of scientific and clinical areas of investigation. Pharmaceutical Medicine is the medical scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, registration, monitoring and medical aspects of the marketing of medicines for the benefit of patients and the health of the community.

In this rapidly expanding field of medicine there is a need for high quality education programmes that are compliant with the PharmaTrain initiative of the European Commission, but also with the Bologna process. The programmes at King’s will be the first in the UK that meet both of these requirements. This, plus the opportunity to study at a world class university makes King’s the ideal place at which to study for one of these MSc subjects.

Clinical Pharmacology is the study of how drugs influence human physiology and the way the body handles drugs. It is a vital part of the early clinical development of new medicines. It requires an understanding of preclinical science, ethical and legal requirements for clinical research programmes and how to design and interpret individual clinical trials. A well designed clinical pharmacology programme informs the final regulatory of a new medicine. These new therapeutics are quite distinct from the classical chemotherapeutic agents and they offer the prospect of truly selective cancer therapies that are tailored towards the individual patient's tumour. Cancer pharmacology plays a key role in drug development. In both the laboratory and the clinic, cancer pharmacology has had to adapt to the changing face of drug development by establishing experimental models and target orientated approaches.

The programme is designed to provide you with a 'state-of-the-art' course in modern cancer pharmacology that meets the demand of employers and provides an expert view of the available cancer medicines and the development of new cancer therapies.

It promotes advanced scholarship within specialised areas at the same time as the development of key transferable skills (in IT, communication, and time management) and research techniques. The taught component of the course provides the in depth knowledge and skills necessary to work in cancer research, and is delivered across 2 semesters through lectures, workshops, practicals and 1-to-1 tutorials with ICT staff. You will then join one of our research teams to complete the MSc research project.

The University of Aberdeen is highly regarded for Clinical Pharmacology as the discipline has been taught and delivered for 30 years. It comes from research spanning 50 years. The programme draws on strengths within the university and medical area within disease discovery. Insulin was first developed at University of Aberdeen and the discovery of drug process, treatment and design has been developed and researched ever since. Aberdeen is also known for its research in food and nutrition and other areas. This programme is ideal for newly qualified graduates in medical science disciplines such as biomedical sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, medicine and similar degrees.

Clinical pharmacology forms a critical part of the drug development process and our graduates are employed in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. These industries are now in rapid growth due to a combination of innovations and strength within customised and other types of medicine and treatment industry areas. Further innovations which link into this industry come from the Internet of Things and more ability to treat and diagnose at source.

There is always a strong need for the discipline to provide a foundation to any new innovations which often come from multidisciplinary teams. Course structure

The course runs over one calendar year (starting in September), and is structured around five compulsory modules and three optional modules. Teaching consists of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, while assessment involves exams, literature surveys and a laboratory-based research project.

A distinctive aspect of the course is the inclusion of a number of compulsory modules covering drug discovery, design and development, regulatory affairs and research methodology as well as biomedical sciences. Optional modules allow students to study a subject of personal interest in more depth. A major component of the course is a research project which enables students to undertake their own original research under the guidance and support of a tutor.

The Research Methods Workshop provides the background in research methodology required to complete the research project which is undertaken between May and July. There may be opportunities to complete this project with a local pharmaceutical company.

Areas of study

By the end of the course, you will have learned about how pharmacological interventions may lead to a cure or amelioration of different diseases; the scientific rationale underlying drug design and development; therapeutic regimes and the consequences of drug therapy; and how to apply your knowledge and skills to a specialised area of pharmacology.

This course will provide the theoretical knowledge and laboratory techniques useful for working in industry or for studying for a PhD.

The course is delivered by internationally recognised academics who are involved in biotechnology and pharmacology research. Research projects include studying the manipulation of proteins and their application to Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, ion channels and the development of novel drugs from natural products.

You learn in detail how drugs act at the molecular and cellular level and then how biotechnological techniques are used to produce new drugs. Examples include developing new and effective treatments for diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and rheumatoid arthritis.

You also gain experience of the latest techniques used by the pharmaceutical industry to produce and study the effects of novel drugs.
