Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

The MSc Pharmaceutical Sciences programme was developed in response to the need for enhanced skills by employees within pharmaceutical research, development or manufacturing.

The programme will generate graduates with in-depth theoretical knowledge and extensive laboratory skills, allowing students to be involved in many disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences from drug discovery and medicinal chemistry through to product development and manufacture and including pharmaceutical analysis, quality control and quality assurance.

Delivery on this programme involves a series of lectures, seminars, workshops and lab-based exercises. Many of the lectures on this programme are delivered by leading industrial experts. Problem-based learning and case studies will provide students with experience of team-working that simulates an industrial setting. Students will develop team-working, critical thinking and analytical problem solving abilities which are important in the modern pharmaceutical industry.

PgDip stage (stage 2)

During the PgDip stage of the course you are required to chose two 30credit modules out of four possible options:

• PHM028 Pharmacist Independent Prescribing
The aim of this module is to prepare pharmacists to meet the standards set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) for registration as a pharmacist independent prescriber. In order to be eligible for this module you must hold a current registration with the GPhC or PSNI as a practising pharmacist and have at least two years appropriate patient orientated experience following pre-registration year.

Note: Spaces on this module are limited and places are assigned in order of Independent Prescribing applications received 4months prior to the module start date. You can not secure a place at the time of application to the MSc Clinical Pharmacy.

• PHM026 Medicines Management: Collaborative Working
The aim of this module is to critically explore successful approaches to practice that ensure safe, effective and efficient use of medicines through collaborative working. You will take a closer look at the processes required for the safe, effective and efficient management of medicines, key factors that may impact prescribing choices, aspects that support seamless care and team working skills in the context of medicines management.

• PHM036 Developing and implementing models of care
The aim of this module is to critically investigate the structures, processes and outcomes of a variety of pharmacy services in specialist areas including hospital, community and primary care. You will analyse current national and local policy contexts and critically evaluate structures in relation to pharmacy service provision. You will synthesise, document and justify evidence based care plans in the context of your own practice as well as your organisational and national pharmacy service provision.

• PHM037 Person Centred Care
The aim of this module is to enable you to develop an understanding of person centred care with a focus on pharmaceutical care and service provision. You will gain an appreciation of complex healthcare needs, the influences on individuals engagement with their own health , explore elements that contribute to shared decision making and person centred care planning.

MSc Stage (stage 3)

Students can chose between either module:

• PHM038 Health Services Research
Students progressing to the MSc stage have an opportunity to develop skills and expertise in relation to research and development of pharmacy services. The project area is chosen by you and therefore relevant to your practice and should produce outcomes that allow you to evaluate and develop local services.

• PHM039 Advanced Pharmacy Practice
This module will enable you to develop relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies required for effective advanced practice. The content is mapped with the RPS Advanced Pharmacy Framework clusters in mind enabling you to develop into an advanced practitioner.

Format

You will be taught via our virtual learning environment CampusMoodle, allowing you to develop clinical knowledge and skills whilst remaining in employment. The modules are delivered part-time.

All your materials will be provided online and are designed to allow self-assessment of learning needs then subsequent acquisition and application of knowledge in practice-related problem-based scenarios. These scenarios may involve you carrying out a range of activities including: participation in online discussion forums, formative peer-assessed essays, short answer problem/case study questions and multiple-choice questions.

Additionally, you will be supported by e-tutors who are all practising clinical pharmacy practitioners. E-tutors review the learning materials, provide 'real life' case scenarios and participate in the marking of practice related assessments. They facilitate discussion and learning within the modules and bring a unique practice related perspective to learning.

Each module is sub-divided into a number of topics and you are encouraged to use materials to identify and address your own learning needs.

The Course Leader is a central point for information and support with regard to the delivery of the course. It is also recommended that you have a work-placed mentor to provide local support and encouragement.

Assessment

You will be assessed by continuous assessment. This takes many different forms including: responding to case studies, developing care plans and essay responses to specific topics and contribution to online discussion forums.

This course has been designed in collaboration with employers in both primary and secondary care ensuring that the course is kept up to date and in line with current practice and the demands of the workplace. The multi-disciplinary nature of the course enhances its appeal to employers and as a result, career prospects remain buoyant in both hospital and community practice.

Degree information

About Medway School of Pharmacy

Medway School of Pharmacy is one of the few regional schools of pharmacy in the UK, a collaboration between the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich.

Chemistry and drug delivery
This group has laboratories with dedicated state-ofthe art drug delivery, nanotechnology, spectroscopy, chromatography and organic synthesis facilities. It brings together researchers in medicinal chemistry and drug design, nanotechnology and materials science, drug delivery and pharmaceutics encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to research. Research covers synthesis and biological evaluation of potential anti-cancer agents, structurebased drug design, QSAR predication of ADMET properties, controlled release, particle engineering, powder technology, pharmaceutical technology, and novel drug delivery systems, with a focus on respiratory drug delivery.

Biological sciences
This group is housed in recently refurbished laboratories with dedicated state-of-the-art molecular biological, electrophysiological, tissue culture and microscopy facilities. The research is divided into four main themes; infectious diseases and allergy; neuroscience; renal and cardiovascular physiology; and pharmacology. Examples of current work include: investigation of the use of non-pathogenic virus ‘pseudotypes’ to study pathogenic RNA, study of the properties of neuronal potassium channels and their modulation and the development of new therapies for patients that have developed acute kidney injury in collaboration with a major pharmaceutical company.

Pharmacy practice
This group conducts research in two areas: public health and medicines optimisation, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases and mental health. Work in public health includes studies in physical exercise, alcohol, cardiovascular screening and spirometry testing, plus pharmacovigilance. Studies in medicines optimisation include work in dementia, bipolar disorder and stroke, with an emphasis on the patient perspective.

Medicines Management has been at the top of our agenda since its inception in the early 1990s. Now it is at the top of the national pharmacy agenda. Our Clinical Pharmacy programme for hospital pharmacists was first established in 1981, and we are proud of our high completion rate.

The Clinical Pharmacy programme can be completed via the following flexible pathways to accumulate academic credits at Masters Level:
- CPD Plus+ – register for individual short courses of 10 credits. You can register on a number of occasions in any academic year. Completing 6 CPD Plus+ courses will provide the postgraduate Certificate award and 12 courses the Diploma award.

- CPD Plus+ Open Learn – provides opportunity to negotiate some or all of the content and learning outcomes to meet your specific needs (available as 10, 15 and 30-credit modules)

- Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 9 months and you’ll complete your choice of 6 of the optional modules from our CPD Plus+ portfolio.

- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy – register for 21 months and in the first year you will complete the 6 modules as described for the Certificate and an additional 6 modules of your choice in Year 2.

Teaching & Assessment

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

The Clinical Pharmacy Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. The Programme is also supported by our network of experienced, practising hospital pharmacists who fulfil the roles of clinical co-ordinators and tutors. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact. You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used.

All of the modules contain Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice.

An Audit Project, Practice-Based Assignments , Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%. The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions, formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio, contributions to study days and feedback on draft proposals.

We have pharmaceutical-related equipment for wet granulation, spray drying, capsule filling, tablet making, mixing inhalation, film coating and freeze drying. As well as standard pharmacopoeial test methods, such as dissolution testing, friability and disintegration, we also offer highly sophisticated test methods. These include rheometry, thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and hot stage microscopy), tests for powder flow, laser diffraction, photon correlation spectroscopy, image analysis and laser confocal microscopy.

Facilities for Medicinal Chemistry
Our state-of-the-art spectroscopic facility allows us to confirm the structures of new molecules that could be potential pharmaceutical products and to investigate the structures of potential medicinal substances that have been isolated from plants. We are equipped with Liquid Chromatography-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mass Spectroscopy (LC-NMR/MS) platforms; this is an exceptional facility for a university. We also have low and high resolution mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis equipment. Our facilities allow you to gain hands-on experience of a wide range of analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy and infra-red spectroscopy, which are of great importance in determining both ionic/metal content of pharmaceuticals and simple chemical structures respectively. You will also gain experience of revolutionary protein and DNA separation techniques, as well as Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (x8) and Gas Chromatography for separating all kinds of samples of pharmaceutical or biomedical interest.

Major advances in medical technology, increased expectations, and changing moral attitudes have combined to generate many complex ethical and legal problems in the fields related to medical ethics and palliative care. Individuals who care for patients with life-threatening illnesses can face particularly pressing and difficult moral choices. The course provides an opportunity to gain a deeper and more systematic understanding of these issues, and to explore the moral problems health care professionals working in these areas may face.

Teaching is delivered in short intense blocks, enabling those in full-time employment to do the course part-time and fit it around the demands of their work wherever they are based. The course is taught in Liverpool by lecturers from Keele’s Centre for Professional Ethics (PEAK) and the Learning & Teaching Department of the Marie Curie Palliative Care Institute. From time to time, law lecturers from Keele University may provide specialist input, and external expert speakers may also be invited to speak on the course. This is an exciting joint venture uniting academic and practical expertise.

Students come from a wide range of backgrounds within the field of health care and many diverse geographical locations. Past and current students have reported that meeting and exchanging ideas with others who work in different fields and in different parts of the country is one of the major benefits of the course.

The Medical Ethics and Palliative Care teaching team have many years experience of teaching postgraduate applied ethics courses. We are aware of the special problems and challenges which may face mature students and those combining study with full-time work, and therefore we do our utmost to offer a supportive and stimulating environment for learning. Teaching staff also work at the forefront of research in medical ethics, which helps to give the course a contemporary edge. Course Content

The MA in Medical Ethics and Palliative Care involves both taught sessions and a chance for students to write a dissertation on a topic of their choosing related to the course. Teaching occurs in four three-day modules that run between October and April. This innovative structure has proved particularly popular with health care professionals in full-time employment as it allows students to combine study with full-time work, family and other commitments. It also enables students who are based in all areas of the UK and beyond to attend. Contact between students and staff, and between students, is facilitated between modules to create a distinctive student community.

The MA requires the successful completion of 180 M Level credits, made up of four 30-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. It can be taken either full-time or part-time. When taken part-time the four taught modules are completed in the first year, with the dissertation being completed in the second year. When taking this route there are no specific attendance requirements during the second year apart from a one-day research skills workshop – you may meet your supervisor at mutually convenient times, keep in touch via email or phone, or use a combination of methods.

When taken full-time, the course is completed within one year with the dissertation being submitted at the start of September.

Some students may not want to do the whole course. An alternative route is to leave after completing the four taught modules. Successful completion of these will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ethics and Palliative Care.

Teaching & Assessment

Each teaching block is followed by an assignment. For module one this is made up of three short written tasks, whilst for each of modules 2, 3 and 4 the assignment consists of a 4,000-word essay. All modules must be passed in order to proceed to the dissertation.

The analytical suite contains equipment which is industry-standard for modern clinical and pharmaceutical laboratories. Our state-of-the-art spectroscopic facility allows us to investigate the structures of new molecules and potential medicinal substances. We are equipped with Liquid Chromatography-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Mass Spectroscopy (LCNMR/MS) platforms; this is an exceptional facility for a university. We also have low and high-resolution mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental analysis equipment.

Our facilities allow you to gain hands-on experience of a wide range of analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy and infra-red spectroscopy, which are of great importance in determining both ionic/metal content of pharmaceuticals and simple chemical structures. You will also gain experience of revolutionary protein and DNA separation techniques, as well as Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography for separating unknown chemical mixtures.

Facilities for Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology
Our highly technical apparatus will help you gain a better understanding of the effects of drugs on specific receptors located throughout the human body and related physiological effects. In addition to equipment for standard pharmacopoeial tests, such as dissolution testing, friability and disintegration, we also have highly sophisticated test methods. These include rheometry, thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry and hot stage microscopy), tests for powder flow, laser diffraction, photon correlation spectroscopy, image analysis and laser confocal microscopy.

We also have equipment for wet granulation, spray drying, capsule filling, tablet making, powder mixing inhalation, film coating and freeze drying.

We’ve got thousands of books and e-books on pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, with many more titles available through the inter-library loan service. We also subscribe to a comprehensive range of print and electronic journals so you can access the most reliable and up-to-date academic and industry articles. This part time, online course covers all aspects of delivering care to patients, including treatment modalities, biological, psychosocial and ethical perspectives. Developed and delivered with well-established cancer institutes and oncological and palliative care expertise, you will experience a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating experience wherever you are in the world.

The Oncology for the Pharmaceutical Industry course is designed specifically for professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry or those working in the health and palliative care profession. The course offers an insight into the evolution of drugs used for the treatment of cancer and related illnesses. You will focus on drug research and cutting down costs to find effective medicines to treat cancer.

You will develop detailed knowledge about the interrelationship between oncology and clinical cancer service provision. The course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in oncology pharmaceuticals, with a thorough understanding of oncology.

Through the course you will develop clinical leadership, clinical excellence and the ability to cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration in the delivery of evidence based oncology. This includes sharing mutually valuable information to help develop clinical practice. You will be introduced to the basis of research in oncology, preparing you for further research within the field.

We have designed this course in collaboration with the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR) and it is delivered in association with the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC).

This course covers a diverse range of pharmaceutical analysis research and includes a substantial research led project.

This course enables you to develop and further your knowledge of pharmaceutical and chemical analysis, with a carefully put together range of core modules. You can expand your interests by selecting a pharmaceutical analysis led research project within one of the diverse range of internationally recognised pharmaceutical analysis research groups (alongside PhD students and post doctoral research fellows).

This is a new course which follows on from our well-established BSc Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, BSc Chemistry and MChem Chemistry cluster of programmes. Our staff were entered in the Subjects Allied to Heath Care in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and were ranked as 4* (world-leading). These results put pharmaceutical and analytical science research at NTU at the highest level and will inevitably appeal to potential students interested in furthering their studies in pharmaceutical analysis.

We have links scientists from AstraZeneca and Vectura deliver some of the module content relevant to their workplace. Other guest lecturers from a variety of other companies and universities also present their research.
