Business, ethics and society

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. The specialisation prepares students, particularly facilitated by the commercialisation project, for commercialisation and entrepreneurial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. This specialisation prepares students for careers in human resource management, industrial relations, consulting, public sector management, and general people management roles.

Marketing

Marketing is a fun, dynamic, complex activity (and discipline) that focuses on providing value to both organisations and consumers. Risk is defined by AS/NZS ISO 31000: 2009 as 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. The management of risk is an evolving discipline that builds on current knowledge in a diverse range of activities. The risk management specialisation focuses on operational and financial risk in today's commercial world. It provides extended skills in the strategic and process applications of risk management and prepares for the increasingly complex risk management issues faced in many areas of business and government. Supply chain management

Pharmaceutical Science will appeal to those of you who want to understand how the human body functions at a molecular level and the science that we can use to manage human health.

Based in our state-of-the-art Science Centre, you will explore the biochemical and cellular make-up of the human body, investigate what happens when things go wrong through, for example disease or illness, and how these may be prevented or cured by the action of drugs.

Alongside this, you will build a clear understanding of drugs and medicines, their structures, discovery and development, their biological delivery and activity, and their testing, regulation, production and quality assurance by analytical methods.

The MSci course combines Bachelors-level and Masters-level study in one integrated programme, giving you the opportunity to undertake professional work experience or an extended research project. However, whichever degree you choose to complete, you’ll develop wide ranging specialist skills and an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical science and its industry.

Course content

In Year 1, you’ll be introduced to the theoretical principles and practical techniques of pharmaceutical science and pharmacology. You’ll study the underpinning biology and chemistry and learn about the activity of drugs on the human body.

During Year 2, you’ll look more thoroughly at the analysis and quality assurance of drugs using a range of laboratory techniques and QA methodologies. Your understanding of the human body will extend to the molecular and cellular levels, giving you the depth of knowledge to understand the functions of a healthy body and when disease and illness strike.

Between years 2 and 3 you will take the sandwich placement year. By doing this, you’ll complete a one-year placement with a company within the pharmaceutical industry specifically or a wider scientific field. You might work in drug discovery, isolating and characterising new potential drugs, undertake laboratory or clinical trials, or be involved in full scale industrial drug production that will further develop your employability skills. You will be supported by an onsite placement supervisor and receive regular visits and support from your academic supervisor too.

In Year 3, your final year, you’ll follow the complete process – from the stages involved in identifying potential new drugs, synthesising them for laboratory and then clinical trials, and subsequently, how their approval and production for commercial markets. You will also undertake independent research in an area of your choice, designing your research to probe a current issue in pharmaceutical science.

As an MSci student, your fourth year will provide the opportunity to gain an even greater breadth and depth of specialist knowledge. You’ll also hone your professional skills by completing a work placement or research assistantship, where there may be the opportunity to work closely with a leading employer.

It will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the development of biotherapeutics, beginning with pre-clinical modelling and target identification together with antibody engineering, biochemical and biophysical characterisation, and development issues for bioprocessing.
Systems biology of biotechnological processes and approaches to the analysis of proteomicsbased discovery data will be covered in detail, together with mathematical modelling, bioinformatics analysis and data integration strategies. Regulatory issues, and innovation and commercialisation strategies, will also be covered. Mammalian cell culture and bioprocess laboratory structure will be comprehensively covered in addition to novel approaches to therapeutic development. You will also receive a comprehensive business education. You will learn to identify and solve business problems in local and international settings, enhance your communication and leadership skills, and improve your ability for independent thinking and developing creative solutions.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Students will be encouraged to propose their own project title (selection subject to availability of an appropriate supervisor) although a range of potential titles will be offered. Projects will be non-laboratory based and generally undertaken at the University of Warwick under the supervision of an approved tutor.

One third of the final mark will be derived from the project dissertation.
