Our MSc Deaf Education course will help you to train as a Teacher of the Deaf if you are a qualified teacher, or develop research skills that can be applied to this field.

Rapid developments in audiology and our understanding of language, communication and educational practice make teaching and learning for deaf children an exciting area of study.

The course uses an evidence-based approach to meeting the diverse needs of deaf children and places a strong emphasis on translation of theory to practice.

Our course has Department for Education (DfE) and Teacher Development Agency (TDA) approval, meeting the requirements of the mandatory qualification.

Most graduating students go on to teach and support deaf children both in the UK and overseas, although there are also opportunities to continue academic research in this area.

Both MSc (part-time on-campus learning) and PGDip (full-time or part-time on-campus or blended learning) options are available. If you already have the PGDip, you can take an additional unit to gain the MSc award.

We have close links with services and service users, and ensure that a range of perspectives and philosophies are represented.

Teaching and learning

This online course provides an opportunity for you to learn at your own rate, at a time and place that suits you. The course is set within a framework of online support and workshops to ensure you have the chance to meet and share ideas.

The online research methods unit prepares students to undertake a long study, which may be in a range of formats.

You will also have access to student mentors (recently qualified teachers of the deaf) in addition to a personal tutor.

In addition to the full-time option, the University offers an on-campus option (2 years part-time) or an e-blended learning and distance learning course (2 years part-time) to make the course as accessible and flexible as possible.

The e-blended course is a new option offering online and written materials with 2x3 days on campus per year. All students undertake two placement blocks with a total of eight weeks on placement over the course of study.

All on-campus students are also required to attend a weekend workshop (this is optional for students undertaking the e-blended course). The weekend provides an opportunity to meet a range of professionals, to extend knowledge and understanding, to exchange ideas and to establish a strong group identity. It is based in a well-appointed University conference centre in Manchester.

Coursework and assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used within the PGDip, including written assignments, case reports, practical work and practical delivery of work. As part of the course, there are opportunities for formative assessments that help to shape individual studies but do not contribute to the final marks.

The MSc dissertation may be in the form of a:

  • systematic review
  • detailed critical review of a school/service
  • theoretical review
  • quantitative study
  • metasynthesis
  • policy review.

Course unit details

For the full MSc, the course consists of relevant theoretical and practical teaching experience and a dissertation.

Placements are arranged in consultation and you will be fully supervised.

PGDip students will study all units except the dissertation. Those topping up to an MSc will only take the 60-credit dissertation unit.

For those studying part-time, the first year will focus on research methods and will include a workshop to share ideas on projects and the appropriate methodological approaches. The second year will focus on the preparation and delivery of the long study.

All PGDip students must attain CACDP Level I as a minimum by the end of their course of study.

Career opportunities

Most graduating students progress to a career in teaching deaf children. This is a diverse remit and a teacher of the deaf may work in a school for the deaf, a unit or resourced provision, at primary or secondary level, or a specialist nursery class.

They may also act as peripatetic support to deaf learners in mainstream classes, or early years child and family support, often moving through a range of these roles throughout their career.

Career opportunities can also include a move into academic research and higher education if that is an interest.

There are a small but growing number of teachers of the deaf who take time out to work abroad (eg through the UN or VSO) to support services in developing countries.

The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) is made up of four taught modules (30 credits per module). One module is taught in each semester (late September to early January and late January to early May). It takes 2 academic years to complete the award of PgDip (120 credits). At this stage you can take the PgDip award or continue studying for the MSc. This entails completing a research project module (60 credits) over a further two semesters. This leads to the award of Master of Science (MSc) worth in total 180 credits. The full PgDip/ MSc programme normally takes three years part-time (6 semesters).

Delivery

The face-to-face course has been structured to meet the needs of students who are also full-time health professionals. Each module is equivalent to approximately three study days. It is delivered through a combination of:

  • resource-based learning
  • private study

  • work-based assignments

The e-learning Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma are studied completely via distance learning. Each of the three 20-credit modules on each stage runs over either 11 or 12 weeks. 

Full and part time

You can study the MMedEd full time over one year.

If you prefer to study part time you can complete the PGCert over one year. Following this you can progress to the PGDip, which you can study over one or two years. Finally, you can progress to the MMedEd, which is also studied over one or two years.

Accelerated

You can also choose to complete an Accelerated Diploma or Accelerated Masters course. This allows you to study more than one stage of the course, part time, over one year:

This intensive programme is for graduates from any discipline wishing to train and qualify as social workers.

Through a combination of academic and professional modules, you will focus on both the social science knowledge base of social work, and on developing your practice-relevant knowledge, skills and values through 200 days of practical learning.

Taught by qualified social workers with a range of practice specialisms and research interests, this course offers exciting opportunities to learn alongside students from related professional disciplines including occupational therapy, teaching, nursing and medicine, mirroring the interprofessional nature of social work practice.

Users of social work services, carers and experienced practitioners are also actively involved in the course and the delivery of teaching sessions. 

The postgraduate diploma (PGDip) can be taken as an alternative and shorter route to obtaining a postgraduate social work qualification with students learning alongside MSc students in all except the dissertation module. It is also available as an early exit award to those registered on the MSc who opt not to take the dissertation module but meet all other requirements of the PGDip.

The MSc and PGDip are both approved by the Health and Care Professions Council, the regulatory body for social workers and other health professionals. All students will address the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers throughout the course, alongside the former College of Social Work's Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF).

Course structure

In line with the guidance of the College of Social Work, students undertake 200 days of practical learning across the course. This involves 30 days of developing practice skills within the university, a 70-day placement in year 1 and a 100-day placement in year 2.

Learning in practice is supported by periods of study at the university, directed study (with a range of learning materials) and small-group practice tutorials. The course reflects the interprofessional nature of social work, with opportunities for shared learning experiences with education, nursing, medical and occupational therapy students.

Areas of study

Year 1 introduces core skills, theories and approaches for social work practice in its interprofessional context and fosters a critical understanding of key law, policy and human growth across the lifespan.

Year 2 focuses on more complex and accountable practice together with the development of more specialised skills and knowledge. There is also a focus on research in social work and the critical use of evidence to underpin own practice.

It is possible to take the PGDip as a standalone qualification in 15–18 months, or as an early exit award for those registred on the MSc who choose not to take the dissertation module but who meet all other PGDip requirements.

A Physician Associate is a healthcare professional trained in the medical model to work with the medical team in order to deliver medical care to patients. PAs work under the supervision of a doctor in a range of specialities across medicine in both primary and secondary care. PAs are trained to take medical histories, carry out physical examinations, formulate diagnosis, request and interpret tests and investigations, undertake procedures and develop treatment and management plans.

The PgDip/MSc Physician Associate Studies aims to ensure students receive the required education and training in line with requirements of the Competence and Curriculum Framework, enabling graduates to be successful in completion of the programme and the PA National Exam. It also aims to ensure that graduates are safe and competent clinicians, at the point of qualification.

This intensive programme is delivered over 2 years. Year 1 is mainly theoretical and University based (5 days per week) with 1 day per week in general practice. Year 2 is mainly spent on clinical attachment with one day every 3-4 weeks back in University. Students will develop a sound knowledge base in clinical medicine and develop comprehensive clinical examination skills which form the basis of their generalist medical education enabling them to enter work in any medical speciality. From that point, they develop the specialist knowledge required to progress their careers and care for patients

Students must pass all elements of the programme to be eligible to sit the National PA Exam for entry into professional practice.

In conjunction with this, a significant of time is spent on communication and clinical examination skills as these form the basis of the skills that the PA will use throughout their clinical working lives. In addition to this, the PA student will spend 1 day per week in clinical attachment (General Practice) to rehearse and fine tune their skills.

To exit with the PgDip in Physician Associate Studies, students will be required to pass assignments relating to the modules in Foundations of Clinical Medicine 1, Applied Pharmacology for Physician Associate Studies, Research Methods for Physician Associate Studies and Evidence-Informed Decision Making for Physician Associate Studies in Year 1. Students must also pass the assessments associated with the GP placement and an objective structured clinical examination for the Personal & Professional Development 1 module in order to progress to year 2. In year 2 students will be required to pass the Foundations of Clinical Medicine 2 and Personal & Professional Development 2 modules. The Clinical Competence in Physician Associate Skills module will assess the core competencies and core procedural skills in the Competence and Curriculum Framework for Physician Assistants and has been designated Pass/Fail, rather than having credit value. This competency assessment will be undertaken prior to taking the UK Physician Associate National Certification Examination at the end of Year 2. A pass in all taught modules of the programme and in the UK PA National Certification Examination will be required for the award of the PgDip in PA Studies.

This is a complex and very intensive programme and involves the establishment of a new suite of student placements and assessments, therefore, in the first instance, the course team do not intend to offer the masters programme and only intend to offer the PgDip. Once the programme has been established then the team will roll in the possibility to complete the masters by completion of the 60 credit Service Improvement Project module. This 60 credit module can either be taken alongside the second year of the full-time taught modules that comprise the PgDip or it can be taken part time over 3 semesters of a third year as a top-up.

Students who fail the assessment associated with the Personal & Professional Development 1 module but who have passed the module Foundations in Clinical Medicine 1 and passed other modules totalling at least 30 academic credits may exit with the lower award of Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Sciences (noting that students must pass all modules in year 1 to progress to year 2). A student who fails the Clinical Competency assessment/UK PA National Examination but who has passed all of the other elements of the programme can exit with a PgDip in Medical Sciences or if they have successfully completed the Service Improvement Project, an MSc in Medical Sciences.

Career options

Whilst the PA profession is established and growing rapidly in the UK with a variety of jobs across a range of primary and secondary care specialities, this is the first PA programme in Northern Ireland. As such it presents its own challenges in the form of employment opportunities. However there have already been jobs advertised in Northern Ireland for PAs and in preparation for the programme the University have been working with the local Trusts seeking clinical attachments and scoping the potential for employment of PAs. The evidence from early PA programmes in England indicates that all of their students secured employment as PAs with many offered jobs before qualification. This continues to be the trend in the UK and the University are confident that this will be the same in Northern Ireland.

Once qualified, PAs can work across a range of specialities throughout medicine. There are also opportunities to work in education and as potential future leaders of the PA profession.

The qualification is not recognised in the USA and currently graduates who train in the UK may only be able to work in the UK. This may change in time.

There are two different degrees available in Violence, Terrorism and Security - MA and PgDip.

The Post-Graduate Diploma (PgDip) consists of all the above six core taught modules/classes, but students do not complete an MA dissertation. The PgDip is a credit-bearing and internationally recognised post-graduate degree, but it is not the equivalent to a Master’s degree. It is both an entry and exit route.

The Master’s degree (MA) in Violence, Terrorism and Security is awarded to students who successfully complete six core taught modules/classes and the MA dissertation.

Moving from a PgDip to an MA: Students who are registered on the PgDip are invited to register and complete the MA upon successful completion of the six core taught modules/classes. 

Assessment and Feedback

Assessment and Feedback are continuous throughout the course of study. 

Students are provided a range of assessment approaches, both formal and informal as well as formative and summative, in order to enhance the student learning experience and improve student attainment. Each module typically consists of two or three main pieces of assessment and can include essays, policy reports, simulations, presentations, among other forms of assessment.

Feedback is provided throughout the VTS programme for continuous student reflection and growth. Teachers provide thorough and systematic feedback on assessed work. Feedback is also available from your personal tutor as well as via various support mechanisms and training courses in the university, such as via the Student Guidance Centre.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching hours take place in morning/afternoon/night.

  • Each module usually consists of 2-4 contact teaching hours per week, depending on the module. Most study, however, consists of independent research and reading. Each student is also allocated a personal tutor/academic advisor who, alongside teaching in each module, aids in the learning process.
  • Modules involve a variety of teaching approaches designed to inspire critical and transferable skills.

The Masters dissertation is usually submitted in the semester following completion of the PgDip Legal Studies plus CPE. Our innovative Forensic Linguistics programme offers the theory and techniques to critically analyse the use of language in a variety of legal contexts. You will learn to critically evaluate expert testimony on forensic matters and to consider the role of expertise in legal systems more generally.

You will receive a grounding in research methods and issues and debates in forensic linguistics. You will acquire tools for evaluating and examining a range of legal language in relation to issues such as power and comprehensibility. You will also develop skills in research and writing at higher degree level and learn to engage with the legal system as a site of social life where important decisions are made through language.

Core knowledge and understanding is delivered via lectures and small-group seminars.

The teaching for core modules combines discussion of theoretical issues and practical challenges raised by the forensic setting, while the teaching for optional modules provides further theoretical discussion with some focus on the development of practical research skills. Sessions rely on your good preparation.

Core knowledge and understanding are also delivered via one-to-one or very small group supervision of individual projects. Intellectual Skills are promoted via lectures, seminars and group discussions, as well as small-group supervision and guidance for research undertaken in a small, team research project.

The learning activities will vary from module to module as appropriate, but will usually include interactive discussions of prepared texts/topics and, in some cases, student-led presentations.

Encouraged to explore our excellent library resources, you are expected to undertake preparation including wide-ranging reading to enable full participation.

Assessment

The Marine Technology Education Consortium courses offer innovative and flexible training for graduates working in the marine industry. You will develop advanced technical skills and business applications. The courses are part time and offer minimal disruption to your work responsibilities.

Delivered through a combination of distance learning materials and intensive schools, our course allows a flexible approach to study in a supportive environment. Our course material is highly relevant and practical for working in the marine industry. You will be encouraged to reflect on the industrial relevance of the modules in relation to your work.

The courses are operated by the Marine Technology Education Consortium (MTEC), a consortium of four UK universities.

The availability of one general and three specialised pathways ensures that the course is tailored to suit your professional needs. The general MSc and Postgraduate Diploma is available for those seeking a broader-based study package.

Each pathway has compulsory modules, but the number will vary depending on the relevant stream and qualification. Each contain the following format:

  • Pre-school material - this requires 50 hours of study and enables you to revise and review essential material so that the intensive school can be run effectively. This material is made available six to eight weeks prior to the intensive school. You take a pre-school assignment (30% of the module mark) which is submitted on the first day of the intensive school.
  • A week-long intensive school - this will have a contact time of 35 hours and will include lectures, case studies, tutorials, presentations, discussions and visits. Academic and industrial tutors will be involved. You sit an examination (40% of the module mark) during this teaching week.
  • Post-school material - this requires 15 hours of study and involves completion of a post school assignment (30% of the module mark) submitted eight weeks after the intensive school. This consolidates your learning on the module.

The Marine Technology Education Consortium delivers one general and three specialist pathways leading to different awards:

  • Marine Technology (MSc, PGDip, PGCert)
  • Marine Technology: Marine Engineering (MSc, PGDip)
  • Marine Technology: Naval Architecture (MSc, PGDip)
  • Marine Technology: Offshore Marine Renewable Energy (MSc, PGDip).

Accreditation

Modules on the MSc and PGDip are accredited jointly by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) on behalf of the Engineering Council. 

This gives you an additional benchmark of quality to your degree, making you more attractive to graduate employers. It can also open the door to higher-level jobs, most of which require Chartered Engineer status.
