​MA Managing Community Practice: This programme is designed to enhance the professional practice of experienced practitioners by facilitating a critical and reflective approach to management, staff development, innovatio​n and researching practice. Many of the modules are taught interprofessionally including colleagues from community work, youth work, teaching, PRUs and health in both voluntary and statutory sectors. This provides for rich interprofessional learning and reflects the practice realities of interprofessional working.

PgD in Youth and Community Work: This professionally endorsed award is particularly suitable for graduates who have increasingly found themselves working in the field of youth and community work and who wish to gain a professional qualification. The programme requires students to undertake two separate supervised placements in the field of youth and community work. Students attend university on one evening a week where they undertake taught modules and tutorials. Students on this programme tend to develop into a highly supportive, friendly and analytical professional group.

MA Managing Community Practice:
The programme consists of three core and one optional module, followed by a dissertation. Most students choose to take two modules per year over two years (one evening per week during term time) followed by the dissertation, although full-time and accelerated modes of attendance may be negotiated.

It is envisaged that students will utilise their experiences to enhance the level of analysis in all collective sessions. Students are expected to engage in reflective learning processes throughout the duration of the programme.

Teaching methods will tend to emphasise small group discussions and informal lectures.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on both their youth and community work-based practice and their academic assignments through a range of assessment types including essays, presentations, group exercises, portfolios, reflective writing, and viva voce.

Employability & Careers​

MA:
The programme is aimed at practitioners and managers in the generic and expanding field of youth and community development work. It aims to enable people to develop their professional understanding and skills through a supportive and challenging learning environment.
The programme will be of particular interest to experienced practitioners who manage aspects of youth or community development provision and who wish to develop their analytical and professional capabilities. It is one of the pathways on the Master's CPD framework.

PgD:
The PgD is a programme leading to professional qualification in youth and community work which is endorsed by the Wales ETS. As such it enables graduates to qualify in this growing occupational area while enhancing their academic profile.

This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills in Advanced Clinical Practice at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. By using a blended learning approach, the award creates a practice-focused, student-centred, flexible programme that develops student capabilities to:

-Engage in independent evidence-based decision making
-Determine creative and innovative solutions to practice issues
-Develop analytical and intellectual skills at Masters level

This part time three year programme comprises of both practice and academic based learning. The clinical focus of the award is a direct result of the continuing need to develop the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The expanding clinical role is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The student will also receive support for personal and professional development from a senior clinical lead of the same profession who acts as a mentor for the duration of the award.

Course outline

This award is designed to offer you a flexible programme of learning. The programme includes 150 credits of Award core modules and 30 credits of Award option modules. The option modules provide opportunity for your development in professional studies and/or clinical care in areas that meet the learning outcomes and clinical competencies of the Award, and you will normally study modules in the following sequence when exploring these themes:

The award has three potential exit points: The award is flexible in that it allows you study modules in the PgC and PgD in any order, however you cannot be awarded a PgC or PgD until the modules for each stage have been completed.
-The postgraduate certificate (PgC) in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making can be awarded following successful completion of PgC modules to the value of 60 level 7 credits.
-The postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Advancing Clinical Practice can be awarded following successful completion of PgC and PgD modules to the value of 120 level 7 credits or 30 level 6 credits (Independent Supplementary Prescribing ONLY) and 90 level 7 credits.
-Once you have successfully completed the Postgraduate diploma, you are eligible to register for the Masters project or dissertation. The award of Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Clinical Practice will be awarded following successful completion of modules to the value of 30 level 6 credits and 150 level 7 credits or 180 level 7 credits.

In order to progress from one stage of an award to another (i.e. PgC to PgD, PgD to Masters), you must complete the proceeding stage although you are free to study modules can be undertaken in any order.

Employment opportunities

This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge to look for a position as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in NHS or Independent Heath Provision. However the course does not provide automatic qualification for employment in these roles as some practitioner roles may require specialist experience and knowledge outside the remit of the course content. However, it should provide a stepping stone to these positions as they occur.

Other admission requirements

Entry onto the Award must comply with the University requirements for admission to Postgraduate awards. Applicants must meet the following criteria: Applicants should normally hold an honours degree of a UK University, or any other qualification deemed to be equivalent to a UK honours degree.
OR
For those whose first language is not English you need to demonstrate a minimum of:
-A minimum score of 7.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as administered by the British Council in most countries.

Learning & Teaching​

​All modules, except the independent research project (dissertation) module, are 20 credit modules. Timetabled delivery for each taught module usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops and tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All students are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of their course.

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, presentations and critique.

The independent research project (dissertation) can be presented either as a traditional 12,000 word thesis or in the format of a journal article.

Employability & Careers​

Many graduates of the programme are currently studying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in a related subject within Cardiff Metropolitan and at other UK institutions. Graduates have typically pursued careers as clinical and applied science consultants, lecturers (further and higher education) and, in the fitness and training industry. Recent graduates have also secured employment as applied sport scientists in the National Institutes of Sport (e.g. English Institute of Sport, Sport Wales), within UK academic departments and within clinical practices.

Learning & Teaching​

​A variety of teaching strategies are employed to reflect the following:
- the requirements of the particular topic
- the existence of background experience within the group
- the level and type of study required at level 7

Lectures are the most prevalent teaching method for the introduction to module material, where the major function is to provide a basic framework, to generate interest in the subject concerned and to explain complex points. Lectures are complemented by tutorial sessions designed to encourage a more detailed examination of issues. Students are issued, in their module handbook, with a programme schedule of topics to be covered in lectures and supporting tutorials for all subjects, along with lists of references to guide their supplementary reading. The VLE will also host supporting materials.

Tutorials and related small group work is an important part of teaching and learning. It encourages the depth of discussion and application appropriate to higher degree work. The major aim is to develop skills related to thinking, discussion and presentation of information. It helps to develop analytical and critical appraisal skills.

Practical Work/Demonstration sessions in certain modules, such as Analytical and Diagnostic Techniques, Molecular Biology and the Dissertation, complement and extend the theoretical aspects of study and help to develop the students' skills of investigation, analysis, critical evaluation and reflection.

Case Studies are used throughout the programme as a means of encouraging students to apply their theoretical knowledge of biomedical science to real patients and thus take a holistic view of diagnostic medicine. Real cases are used and students are encouraged to integrate knowledge from a number of modules and to reflect on the possible outcomes
In addition to the contact hours per modules (approx. 40 hours per 20 credit module) the student will be expected to undertake a certain number of student led hours (approx. 160 per 20 credit module) to achieve an overall 200 hours of student effort per 20 credit module.

- Academic Support
Students are supported at each stage of learning and assessment. The Programme Director is responsible for overall academic management of the programme and support for the student. Module Leaders are responsible for academic guidance and support for each module offered and for academic feedback on student progress. The Project Manager is responsible for all the process regarding the project work and the dissertation. Personal tutorials will be arranged with your Personal tutor throughout the programme, and if you are experiencing any difficulties with your study for example problems with coursework or preparation for examinations, then there will always be a member of staff - the Programme Director, Module Leader or personal tutor available to assist you.

Assessment

It is recognised that assessment is a necessary part of an evaluation of a student's suitability for an award and involves testing and developing the higher-level cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. For this reason, assessment is designed to measure the extent to which the student is able to satisfy the intended learning outcome of each module. The learning outcomes are assessed within the modules through a variety of methods including:
- unseen examinations
- essays
- practical based laboratory exercises
- laboratory reports
- case studies
- poster presentation
- case study presentation
- abstract writing and journal article reviews

Time limited examinations are seen as an end of module check on student academic attainment in certain modules where a detailed understanding of contemporary scientific thinking, often research lead, is deemed to be an essential currency.

In addition, assignments are used either in addition to or as an alternative to written examinations in certain modules where they best reflect breadth of understanding.

The assessment schedule for the taught modules will be supplied by the programme director at the beginning of the programme. The module leader will supply the assessment titles and guidelines/criteria to undertake the assignments and provide feedback to the students.

Course Overview

​The programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the British Dietetic Association. It enables nutrition graduates to study dietetics so that they can apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian at Postgraduate Diploma or MSc level.

The Postgraduate Diploma programme is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and contains three compulsory placements in NHS Dietetics Departments in Wales.

Students exiting with the Postgraduate Diploma can return to undertake the dissertation on a part-time basis to gain the MSc Dietetics.

Applications for September 2016 entry open October 2015. Deadline for applications: 15th January 2016.

Entry Requirements​

Applicants should have an honours degree (1st class or 2:1) in human nutrition, or a degree that includes nutrition in the awards title, with sufficient emphasis on physiology and biochemistry (50 credits in total required, with at least 20 credits in human physiology and 20 credits in human biochemistry).

It is also preferable for candidates to have 10 credits in sociology and 10 credits in psychology, however this can be taken alongside other modules on the programme if successful.

Students should have completed their degree not more than five years before their proposed entry to this Masters.
Applicants who have a first or upper second-class honours degree in nutrition, which does not contain either sufficient biochemistry or physiology (but not both), can undertake further relevant modules at undergraduate level, prior to applying for the programme.

Applicants who do not have a degree award in nutrition (1st or 2:1) but meet the requirements for biochemistry and physiology, will need to undertake a further relevant taught course of study to at least to postgraduate diploma level prior to applying for the course.

Applicants who speak English as a second language must have adequate command of English, with an IELTS score of 7, with at least 6.5 in all elements.

​Course Content​​

During the programme students are educated to be responsive practitioners, able to adapt to the changing needs of society. The course is designed to produce critically thinking and reflective professionals who have comprehensive theoretical knowledge, along with a spirit of enquiry and an analytical and creative approach to problem solving.

The programme has two main parts; the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics:
This part contains the taught academic element, which is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and three periods of practical training. On completion students can graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, which leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian.

MSc:
Students can undertake the dissertation to obtain MSc Dietetics, which can be achieved straight after the Postgraduate Diploma element. On completion students can be awarded MSc Dietetics, which also leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian. Alternatively the dissertation can be taken after being awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, within 5 years of initial enrolment; this can be taken on a part-time basis.

The taught academic part of the course contains six modules at Level 7 (Masters). In addition, students study professional body modules (level 5) in order to fulfil the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council and the British Dietetic Association curriculum guidelines.

Learning & Teaching​

​The taught element of the programme involve lectures, tutorials and practical work. Tutorials are mainly case study based where students apply the theoretical knowledge gained in lectures to problem solve case scenarios. Practical sessions are either food based, involve giving presentations or practice in consultation skills. The practicals take place in the specialist food facilities and the clinical simulation suite.

It is expected that students undertake independent reading and self-study; this is aided by the use of Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment in use at the University.

In addition students undertake 3 periods of practical training in NHS Dietetics departments in Wales. Full preparation is given prior to the placements and students are supported and visited during the placements by Dietetic Academic staff.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who offers pastoral support and guides the student through personal development planning.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by examination and/or assignment. All the modules are externally assessed. The clinical training placements have to be successfully completed to proceed and graduate.

Employability & Careers​

Dietitians normally begin their career in the National Health Service where they progress to the main clinical grades. The opportunity exists for specialisation in various aspects of dietetics by means of post-registration education. In addition there are opportunities for dietitians to be involved in health education/promotion, education, research and journalism.

​Lectures are seen as opportunities for imparting key information and pointing students in a particular direction for further study. They are also intended to be interactive and debate is encouraged. Lectures are complemented by seminar sessions as a means of helping students to develop analytical and critical appraisal skills.
Students will be given an opportunity to discuss their choice of pathway with the Programme Director. This consultation and advice is given during the induction period and the first two weeks of the start of the autumn term.

There is a strong emphasis on applying the theoretical frameworks to problem solving which reflects the applied nature of the programme especially through practical sessions. ​

Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used. These include closed (or open) book examination, written assignments/ essays, practical report plus a dissertation on a chosen research topic for the MSc.

Programme Structure:

- Taught Component:
Contains 4 taught modules, each carrying 30 credits at Level 7. Each module is assessed by coursework assignments equivalent to 6000 words. Each pathway has certain compulsory modules, and there might also be a range of optional modules available, subject to viable numbers.

- Dissertation Component:
You will complete a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words.

Intermediate Awards:
- A Certificate of Attendance is awarded after satisfactory attendance at one Master's level module (no written assessment required)

- Postgraduate Certificate in Education awarded after completion of two Master's level modules (60 credits)

- Postgraduate Diploma in Education awarded after completion of four Master's level modules (120 credits)

- MA is awarded on completion of all necessary taught modules plus a dissertation (12,000 words).

Learning & Teaching​

​The programme will be delivered through a variety of models of delivery with a focus on active learning and group interaction and participation. Typical models of delivery include:

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework assignments equivalent to 6,000 words per thirty credit module throughout the taught element of the programme. Course Overview

This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and, upon completion, provides students with eligibility to apply to the register to practice as Forensic Psychologists in the UK.

The course is designed to be placement based, with various workshops for students as well as clinical and academic supervision. Workshops are usually delivered in block teaching sessions and students are expected to be in Cardiff for around 15 days over the course of their study. We have students from all over the UK so we aim to make access to workshops as straightforward as possible for those students who have to travel long distances to attend.

Each student will be allocated both a clinical supervisor and an academic supervisor – at least one of these supervisors will be an appropriately qualified and experienced Forensic Psychologist. Students should consider the availability of a forensic psychologist who is willing and able to offer supervision in their workplace or placement site for the duration of their studies.

Course Content​​

There are 5 modules to the programme:
- Professional Portfolio in Forensic Psychology (80 credits, Level 8)
This is the largest assessed piece of work and it provides credits towards a Professional Doctorate qualification that students may wish to undertake following this programme or at a later stage in their career. The portfolio is a collection of exemplars of work students have undertaken to demonstrate competence in the application of forensic psychology to assessment and intervention work with service users. It will include exemplars of clinical practice (assessments, interventions, evaluation and recommendations) reflective evaluations, practice logs (detailing a minimum of 360 days of professional practice), supervision logs and a variety of placement checklists.

- Consultancy (10 credits, level 8)
This module explores the experience students have in demonstrating the application of psychology in the context of consultancy, developing policy and evaluating service provision.

- Teaching and Training (10 credits, level 8)
This module explores the experience students have in demonstrating the application of psychology in the context of teaching and training.

- Ethical and Professional Practice (10 credits, level 8)
This module explores the experience students have in demonstrating the application of psychology within the appropriate ethical and professional boundaries that are required by the Regulatory Body (Health and Care Professions Council, HCPC), by appropriate professional bodies (British Psychological Society, BPS) and by the relevant placement organisations.

- Functional Assessment and Formulation (10 credits, level 8)
This module explores the experience students have in demonstrating the application of psychology in applying psychological models of assessment, particularly functional assessment and case formulation.

Learning & Teaching​

​Our students are placement based and the programme follows an apprenticeship model, where students work under the supervision of a qualified forensic psychologist and aim to demonstrate their developing competency in the areas identified as relevant to the role (HCPC Standards of Proficiency). So, the primary mode of learning on this programme will be through supervised practice.

To support the learning of students we also offer workshops. Some of the workshops are compulsory and mean that students need to attend Cardiff for around 15 days over the course of their study with us.

We make no apology when stating that this course is challenging and will require a great deal of investment from students in order to complete it. Our students on placement (not employed by placement provider) we expect to be in placement 4 days a week and spend an additional day in study. It is very much a full time programme of study and whilst there are part time options, the commitment is something we urge applicants to consider.

Students are provided with a supervisory team which is comprised of a work placement supervisor (we refer to this supervisor as the clinical supervisor) and a supervisor from the University (we refer to this supervisor as an academic supervisor). Both of these supervisors will be forensic psychologists, except in exceptional circumstances where the course leader has approved a different arrangement. Both supervisors will provide support to the student and will encourage their development and provide pastoral support. Additional support is provided through the Peer Mentors, other students who are a step further along the process.

Assessment

Students are assessed for competency and professionalism, these issues are reviewed in tri-partite supervision sessions every quarter for full time students. In addition to this there are 5 modules that students will complete. The largest of these is the Portfolio where students will gather exemplars of their work with forensic psychology service users following the processes of assessment, intervention, evaluation and recommendation. Additionally, students will complete four reflective report modules on aspects of their practice; Functional Assessment and Formulation, Ethical and Professional Practice, Teaching and Training and Consultancy.

Employability & Careers​

The purpose of the PG Dip in Practitioner Forensic Psychology is to allow students to progress on from Masters level study towards Practitioner status, thereby boosting their employability. At the end of the programme successful students can apply to the HCPC to be registered as Forensic Psychologists. This course is essentially for students who wish to progress on to clinical work within forensic settings or more widely with forensic clients. The programme is placement based and provides supervised support towards developing the competencies required to be an autonomous practitioner.

100% of the graduates from this programme are employed as Forensic Psychologists and so working in professional roles within a variety of organisations in the UK. Some of our graduates may consider returning to complete the Doctorate in Forensic Psychology (Top-Up) once they have decided which area they would like to specialise in.

Candidates can exit after 60 credits with a PGC Outdoor Learning or a PGC Experiential Learning, dependent on the modules chosen. In addition, it is recognised that many professions engage with CPD activities which are not credit rated. The Reflection on Prior Learning module is a 20 credit level 7 generic option module where students can use relevant CPD activities to critically reflect on those experiences and produce a reflective statement and portfolio.

Entry Requirements for specific pathways:​

Dietetics - candidates should be registered Dietitians with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Speech and Language Therapy - candidates should be registered Speech and Language Therapists with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Sports and Exercise Nutrition – candidates should have a first degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or Sports and Exercise Science.

Selection Procedure:
Candidates will be considered by the course director and at least one other member of the course team and may be invited to interview. At this stage there will be discussion about the potential areas that the candidate wishes to study as well as consideration of developmental needs.

​Course Content​

The course will have three defined exit points:
- ​Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) – provides students with the foundation of knowledge and skills required to begin to develop practice as an Advanced Practitioner.

- Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) – provides students with the appropriate knowledge and skills to function as an Advanced Practitioner.

- Master of Science (MSc) – this aimed at those students who wish to continue their academic study and undertake an extended applied research project which must be relevant to practice.

The structure of the programme is designed, where appropriate, to be flexible and meet the needs of the individual learner. Students can opt to study individual modules for their continuous professional development (CPD); there is a separate fees basis for this type of study.

- Audiology:
The audiology modules focus on diagnosis and assessment in several specific areas of clinical audiology by providing advanced theoretical knowledge and training. The modules are intended to provide post-registration education and will be included in the accredited CPD training list of the professional body (British Academy of Audiology, BAA).

- Dietetics:
The Dietetics pathway is intended to support and promote continuing professional development of dietitians and their practice. As such, it will help meet the needs of those wishing to progress and evidence their ability to work at Advanced Practitioner level in the NHS.

- Housing:
The Housing pathway focuses on the core learning outcomes which set the foundations for all members to achieve CIH CM (Chartered Membership). The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) have set a benchmark for Chartered membership which demonstrates that a Chartered member not only has relevant and up to date knowledge but can use this by applying a range of appropriate skills and behaviours in a professional manner. This includes working to the CIH code of professional ethics.

- Musculoskeletal Studies:
The Musculoskeletal Studies pathway is aimed at HCPC registered practitioners – or equivalent – who are involved in the management of lower limb musculoskeletal conditions across a range of patient groups. This has typically included Podiatrists and Physiotherapists,. A key feature is the emphasis on developing an evidence-based approach to practice, and students are challenged to critically analyse a range of issues related to multiple facets of musculoskeletal practice.

- Public Health Emergencies:
The School has worked with the WHO-Collaborating Centre (Centre for Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards, Public Health England) to develop teaching and training materials on The Public Health Management of Major Incidents, Disasters and Events. The pathway is aimed at policy makers, public and environmental-health professionals, together with clinicians and physicians, this course will provide a contemporary, bespoke and unique approaches to major incident management, drawing upon a number of presentations, case studies, scenarios and international guidance.

- Speech and Language Therapy:
The Speech and Language pathway is intended to support and promote continuing professional development of Speech and Language Therapists and their practice. As such, it will help meet the needs of those wishing to progress and evidence their ability to work at Advanced Practitioner level in the NHS.

- Sport and Exercise Nutrition:
There is a demand for this pathway from Dietitians, Nutritionists and those with a Sport and Exercise Science background. The modules on offer have been aligned to the SENr requirements and accreditation will be sought in the future.

Learning & Teaching

The teaching and learning opportunities on the programme are appropriate for students accessing the modules and have been designed to facilitate the development of the advanced practitioner.

Traditionally Masters level programmes are delivered on a day-a-week basis but increasing work pressures make this form of delivery unsustainable. To accommodate these changes to working practices, most modules will be delivered in a blended format; i.e. with blocks of teaching and online resources.

Module delivery will vary according to specific learning needs but will include lectures, tutorial and seminars, as well as extensive use of Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment used at the University.

The work based learning modules are ideally suited to flexible learning as they delivered in the work place. Students undertaking these modules are allocated a supervisor from the teaching team and meetings are arranged to suit the student as well as email/telephone contact.

The dissertation also allows this flexibility as students are expected to undertake the research in their place of work. All students will be allocated a personal tutor who will offer academic and pastoral support and guidance on pathway specific and option modules to select to meet their individual learning needs.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by coursework; the type varies according to the modules and can include the completion of a portfolio, presentations, reflections, reports and case studies. All the modules are externally moderated. Wherever possible students will be offered formative assessments and feedback.

Employability & Careers​

The Professional working at Masters Level will be able to lead and contribute to developments in their profession through a more pro-active, critical and reflective approach. Additionally they will be an agent of change, a leader and act as an advocate of their profession. Employability will be enhanced by professions who undertake modules on a CPD basis and NHS professionals will be able to use the awards towards gaining recognition as an Advanced Practitioner.
