Music is a vital and dynamic aspect of a school curriculum and is an important human practice throughout the world. The PGCE Secondary (Music) course prepares students to teach this challenging and fulfilling subject in a way which reflects the essence of music itself, i.e. a unique practical and creative discipline in which we can understand and express our ideas.

The course allows student teachers to develop their musicianship in the context of the classroom and thus empower young people to use music as part of their lives.

You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.

The aims of the course are:

• to challenge assumptions about the nature of music and music education;

• to analyse the various theories and practices of music education through active learning;

• to place listening, composing and performing, in a wide range of styles and genres, at the centre of the student teacher’s learning experience;

• to experience working alongside teachers in music departments;

• to give access to the latest teaching and learning resources;

• to develop the student teacher as a reflective and enthusiastic practitioner;

• to develop skills which complement the student teacher’s existing expertise;

• to help student teachers develop a well principled philosophy of music education which they are able to use in the profession as the basis of their practice.

The course is organised in partnership with schools in Kent and beyond. We use the expertise of teachers in partnership schools and tutors in university sessions to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required for teaching music to young people, across the full secondary age and ability range.

The course is for people who want to become qualified teachers.

Content

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.

PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.

• Professional Studies

Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies

This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.

• Enhanced Studies

The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Format

Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.

Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this course provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.

Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this course are all qualified teachers.

Assessment

You will be assessed in two main ways­ via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.

You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to their chosen subject options.

Upon successful completion of the programme students can teach in schools as qualified teachers.

About this programme

The Music PGCE introduces students to the broad scope of Music as a curriculum subject across the 11-16 age range. The course is designed to support musicians in coming to an understanding of what it means to be an effective and succesful music educator. Our priority is to develop your expertise in a variety of teaching situations, by exploring a range of different teaching styles. We will offer a range of perspectives on the principles of syllabus design, evaluation and assessment. We aim to deepen students' theoretical understanding of educational issues through engaging practical music workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments and practical musicianship tasks, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the student's continuing professional development.

The Music Education MA will introduce students to research and research-informed practice at the forefront of music education. The programme will provide tools for interrogating musical and educational assumptions, values and practices. It will help students to expand their understanding of effective music teaching, evaluation and assessment across the lifespan.

About this degree

Undertaking the Music Education MA programme will allow students to develop their critical thinking and ability to interrogate current educational research, literature and practice in the overarching fields of music and music education. They will also have the opportunity to pursue specialist lines of enquiry that are related to their own professional and/or academic interests, working alongside prominent academics in the field.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (60 credits), and either two optional modules (60 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits), or three optional modules (90 credits) and a report (30 credits).

Core modules

The two core modules are founded on three strands in the study of music education: philosophy, psychology and sociology. These include historically-significant and cutting-edge contemporary approaches, theories and philosophies across a wide range of topics.

Optional modules

The Critical Studies in Music Pedagogy and Practice module examines past and present music education research and practice across a range of social and cultural contexts. Choral Conducting, Leadership and Communication develops the skills of effective choral conducting and rehearsing in educational contexts.

Dissertation/report

Teaching and learning

The main mode of delivery is through a combination of weekly lectures and seminars.

There are ten-week lecture courses for the two core modules, and also for Critical Studies in Music Pedagogy and Practice (optional module), with sessions held in the evenings at the UCL Institute of Education. However, the Choral Conducting Leadership and Communication optional module takes place over five full days at the UCL Institute, as well as through additional student-led sessions. Students are also required to engage actively with UCL's online learning environments across the programme. The Music Technology in Education optional module is delivered online. All students are entitled to face-to-face tutorials with their allocated tutors. 

Assessment is predominantly through a written assignment for each taught module.

This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach your specialist subject to all age groups of secondary school children.

You will select a subject that you would like to specialise in and over the course of the year complete two modules in this subject. You will be introduced to a range of theories, practice, pedagogy, current research and literature relevant to that subject. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice.

You will undertake two blocks of school experience, two blocks of school experience, Foundation for 6 weeks in one school, and 12 weeks Development and Consolidation in another.

This course has strong links with local musical organisations such as the largest Music Service in the country run by Services for Education in Birmingham. The course provides the opportunity to experience music education from a variety of perspectives, including organisations that form part of the Birmingham Hub for Music Education like Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) and mac Birmingham.

A key feature of the course is how we promote technology enhanced learning both in terms of developing beginning teachers and also how music technology can support teaching and learning in schools.

Entry Requirements

You must have a good degree (minimum 2:2 but 2:1 or 1st preferred) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent. You must have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in both English language and mathematics prior to application and if you are offered an interview you will take a written test to assess your standard of English.

You will also need to pass the Skills Test sin Literacy and Numeracy.

There is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher.

As part of the selection procedure, the interview panel will expect you to demonstrate your expertise in music and will assess personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for initial teacher training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a range of directed tasks and targeted assignments. Trainee teachers are also required to complete a profile of evidence towards the achievement of the standards required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Evidence for the Standards is verified by mentors.

Programme Content

Training is provided through collaboration between Trinity Laban (16 days) and the University of Greenwich (44 days), and is underpinned by significant placement learning opportunities within the schools sector (120 days, of which 10 are placements in alternative contexts with Trinity Laban's partners). These elements will enable you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to teach in secondary schools, and you will be formally assessed against the national statutory requirements for Qualified Teacher Status.

In addition to practical teaching experience gained in two main schools, the partnership between Trinity Laban and the University enables you to gain training and teaching experience outside of classroom settings, for example in instrumental/vocal teaching for a Music Hub, school Musical Futures or community rock/pop projects, or leading orchestral outreach projects. As part of a collaborative team you will also design, coordinate and lead a two-day immersive creative composition project in a school.

In support of this work, you will be able to undertake instrumental/vocal lessons with Trinity Laban's outstanding teachers and will also be mentored by subject specialist teachers from whom you will receive daily feedback and guidance.

Progression Routes

By gaining Qualified Teacher Status you become a qualified teacher for both the maintained and independent sectors. The majority of our graduates become secondary music teachers. However, there are other opportunities, such as working for local authority music services in instrumental teaching or curriculum support. Some students use the skills they have developed to pursue a career as freelance workshop musicians.

Format

During the course you will spend around 70% of your time in placement schools where you will be trained across the 11-16 age range. You will develop the skills and knowledge to teach drama in a creative and imaginative way, using a variety of different approaches. You will also engage with relevant research literature and develop the skills of a reflective and research informed practitioner.

You will attend subject-specific sessions, lectures and seminars, which are designed to develop awareness and understanding of general professional issues, the nature and content of the music curriculum and the role of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching of music, and issues such as planning and assessment.

You will obtain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and up to 60 Masters level credits.

Assessment

The Teachers’ Standards 2012 provide the framework by which your progress in your teaching is judged. These are supplemented with descriptors which support you in understanding the qualities, which define the level at which you meet the standards.
Your assignments and documentary evidence are managed through a webfolio, bringing together your experiences and activities into a coherent structure. It will help you engage in critical self-evaluation of your practice, enabling you to identify areas of strength and areas for future development.

Careers

Local and national demand for University of Bedfordshire graduate teachers is high. Annual destinations surveys show that 90% of graduate teachers will have secured full-time teaching posts to begin in the year of graduation, with a further 9% working in part-time teaching positions.

Course details

You’ll spend two thirds of your PGCE on placement with 24 weeks in secondary school and five days in primary school, supported and supervised jointly by a school mentor and a faculty tutor. In addition to this you’ll cover modules on planning, assessment and teaching and you’ll also focus on the teaching of music itself. You’ll maintain professional development and subject knowledge profiles enabling you to chart your development in meeting the professional standards required by the Department of Education. Assessments are based around school experience and are designed to be learning experiences shared with other students, mentors and tutors.
