Leeds Trinity University offers Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6) initial teacher training courses in a number of subject areas. PGCE students are also registered to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7).

You will benefit from support from both Leeds Trinity University staff and fellow trainees to ensure the year runs as smoothly as possible. You will gain experience of teaching in a range of school contexts, being offered excellent support throughout the process. You will be able to identify strengths and areas for development in your teaching expertise as you move to your NQT year as you become increasingly reflective and evaluative as a teacher.

You can choose to study PGCE English via the following routes:

- The Leeds Trinity University PGCE Provider-led programme led by the University with placements in partnership schools. Trainees spend in excess of 24 weeks in schools, undertaking two contrasting teaching placements.
- PGCE School Direct programmes are a partnership between Leeds Trinity University and schools. Trainees normally spend most of their time in schools, with tuition provided by University tutors based at the school, and expert school teachers.

The PGCE Secondary (English) course is a rigorous and imaginative, innovative and intensive nine-month course preparing graduates for the challenges and rewards of teaching in the secondary sector. The PGCE English offers candidates the opportunity to inspire young people about English or drama and media.

The aim is to produce a conscious and literate generation that uses drama, media and English to make sense of, and enjoy the world is at the heart of what we do.

You will be awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to teach in schools.

The course is organised in partnership with schools around Kent and Medway (and towards London), where you spend 24 out of the 36 weeks teaching across two contrasting placements.

Course detail

All PGCE courses cover three main areas: Curriculum Studies, Professional Studies and Enhanced Studies. However, all learning on the course is designed to complement professional practice and the academic study will be informed by and inform practice.

PGCE students will be placed in two schools for a mixture of blocked time and serial (e.g. one day a week) time adding up to meet the current Government requirement for a minimum 120 days in school.

You can exit the PGCE courses with one of two awards. The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is awarded to those students who gain less than 40 Level 7credits, but who pass all modules, gaining 100 or 120 Level 6 credits. If you achieve 40 or 60 Level 7 credits and pass all the modules, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). All students completing a PGCE will also be recommended for QTS.

• Professional Studies
Professional Studies sessions aim to inform you about aspects of professional practice which are central to your work, whatever your subject, including how do we learn, how do we include all children, how is teaching a professional activity, how can education be organised and how can learning be assessed.

• Curriculum Studies
This module involves work in studying key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for your subject. The sessions allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow reflection on differing school approaches to the subject.
• Enhanced Studies

The module enables you to choose an area of personal interest to you to study this in more depth through a research project based in a school.

Format

Across the PGCE year there is an equivalent of 12 weeks of taught input which take place at university on the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of seminar and workshop activity. There will also be a small number of lecture inputs.

Across the PGCE year there is the equivalent of 24 weeks spent in school. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience. There is also a degree of individual support for learning offered in this programme provided by mentors in school and the university tutors.

Tutors and mentors who lead the learning on this course are all qualified teachers.

Assessment

You will be assessed in two main ways via academic assignments and assessment of your teaching.

You will submit academic assignments for 20 credits in each curriculum, professional and enhanced studies modules. Each submission will include a written element, but you may also be assessed via presentations or practical performances as relevant to your chosen subject options.

Module Details

The course is essentially practical and two-thirds of your time will be spent in school where you will be working closely with mentors and other school staff.

Programme Assessment

The course lasts 36 weeks between September and June, with one third of the time spent in University-based sessions such as lectures, group participation and guided reading, and the remainder working in at least two of our partner schools.

You will be supported by tutors while in the university, and by professional and subject mentors while in schools, encouraging the development of teaching skills specifically for the secondary sector and blending work-based learning experience and supervised teaching practice.

The programme offers trainees a choice between the Professional and the Postgraduate route, with the latter allowing trainees to graduate with 60 M-level credits.

The assessment procedures adopted throughout the course are mainly formative in nature and designed to ensure that trainees meet the Standards for Qualifying to Teach.

In each term you will be assessed on:

The development of your teaching skills
A formal assignment
An interview in which you will demonstrate the evidence collected towards the standards including your subject knowledge
Throughout the course you will collate a portfolio of evidence based on schoolwork, observations of teaching, tasks and assignments.

Student Destinations

Career opportunities within teaching are now far wider and more diverse than ever before. After a few years of teaching, relatively recently qualified teachers are able to gain promotion (responsibility) points for leadership within their subject. Alternatively some teachers prefer to pursue a pastoral route and may gain promotion to Year Head or other pastoral roles. There are also opportunities to become a Subject Leader, which allows effective classroom teachers to gain recognition for their excellence in the classroom without needing to move to more administrative positions. After some experience of middle management successful teachers may progress to senior management as Senior Teacher, Deputy Head or Head.

At the end of the training period, more than 90% of the trainees went into full-time employment in schools within the Portsmouth University Partnership.

Course Overview

The PGCE English course provides real opportunities for students to build and develop the skills and knowledge required to become a successful teacher of English. Working closely with our partner schools, the programme has been devised so as to support and extend our trainees in their university work and their school practice.

If you are a successful applicant, you will explore key aspects of and approaches to the teaching of English. Support will be provided in developing key aspects of subject knowledge, as well as trainees’ understanding of how to construct, prepare and assess purposeful English lessons. Provision is built in so as to ground trainees’ practice in theoretical, pedagogical and professional approaches and expectations.

The course also provides several enhancement opportunities. These include our Literacy Day event, which gives trainees the chance to present their work alongside school colleagues, advisors and literacy experts such as David Crystal, who was our keynote speaker for 2013. Other opportunities come by way of, for example, writing columns for local papers, providing peer support for students across all PGCE subjects in literacy and receiving specific training in key approaches.

Providing our trainees with the confidence and knowledge with which to explore their own practice and make informed decisions about teaching and learning is central to our approach. We encourage and support our trainees in developing their exploration of their own practice as teachers of English.

Key Features

The PGCE course is challenging, but motivating and invigorating, combining practical strategies and skills with academic enquiry and theory. The course is split between university and professional teaching practice, with approximately 12 weeks and occasional days and 24 weeks split between two placements.

The weeks at University are designed in such a way that you experience lead lectures both with your own subject area and with students from different subject areas in order to have an insight about how a particular issue relates to different specialist subjects. These may be given by University Staff or by guest lecturers with specialist expertise.

The PGCE English course has a long established record of close partnership working with a wide range of schools across South Wales. The employment rate of our students is excellent and many of our students continue to be involved in the course by way of mentoring, delivering sessions or continuing their study through our CPD programmes.

Our programme is the largest provider of Secondary PGCE training in Wales and we have long-standing relationships with our partner schools. Many of our partnership mentors teach sessions on our course, providing our trainees with a clear insight into current initiatives and approaches.

The breadth and depth of experience within the English team also gives trainees opportunities to develop their expertise in key aspects of English teaching. Our trainees have opportunities to explore areas of specialist interest, which are built into the course.

Within the newly designed course, if you are achieving your QTS early it is envisaged that, should you wish to take the opportunity, you can arrange a fortnight placement at an establishment of your choice within the Secondary or 14-19 sector.

This will enable you to gain some experience in a specialist area that you may wish to pursue. It could include special needs schools, independent schools and training establishments. This opportunity is likely to increase your experience and employability.

Content

This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach your specialist subject to all age groups of secondary school children.

You will select a subject that you would like to specialise in and over the course of the year complete two modules in this subject. You will be introduced to a range of theories, practice, pedagogy, current research and literature relevant to that subject. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice.

You will undertake two blocks of school experience, two blocks of school experience, Foundation for 6 weeks in one school, and 12 weeks Development and Consolidation in another.

Degree information

You will develop an understanding of classroom practice and the theories underpinning teaching and learning in English, media and drama. You will work with others to produce assessed theatre in education (TiE) presentations for children in partnership schools. This will develop your understanding of how drama and theatre can be applied to teaching and learning.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Placement
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with English and drama mentors who support you through your school placements. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placement at the host school or alliance. Assessment is by the observation of practical teaching, assignments and a portfolio (which links into continuing professional development in the induction year).

Teaching and learning

The structure of our PGCEs includes both school-based and University-based learning. On our secondary PGCEs, around two thirds of your time will be spent in secondary schools, academies or colleges on placements. You will also need to undertake self-directed study in the evenings and weekends, such as background reading, creating lesson plans and completing written assignments.
The University-based elements of the course are taught by tutors with expertise in teaching in schools and colleges and examining KS4/GCSE and AS/A level English. Your tutors have been outstanding teachers in a wide range of schools and colleges and their expertise is complemented by the experience of current outstanding teachers who contribute to teaching on the course.

School-based mentors actively contribute to the course, focusing on aspects of pedagogy and practice in the English classroom. These practical sessions include: teaching language and literature at A level; catering for Special Educational Needs; catering for students for whom English is an additional language; using technology in the classroom; and using drama as an effective teaching tool.

On placement in schools and colleges, you will observe and teach classes under the guidance of an experienced English teacher, who will also act as your mentor. We will endeavour to allocate you to placements which will secure the optimum educational benefit for your professional development needs. Teaching hours are established to reflect the time that is required to spend on planning and assessment, particularly in the early stages of your placements. Your mentors will help you to plan lessons, deal with marking and assessment and improve your teaching skills.

On completion of your PGCE and being granted qualified teaching status (QTS), you will work for a year as a newly qualified teacher (NQT). We keep in touch with our former students and continue to support them throughout their NQT year.

In the Autumn Term, two days of most weeks are devoted to the College-based English Method programme. These subject sessions have a seminar/workshop format.

Teaching practice is in two main blocks, each in a separate school. During the school-based weeks of the Autumn Term, there are opportunities to observe teachers, to ask questions, and to speak with your school-based mentor – either the head of the English department in the school or another experienced member of staff.

Much of the Spring and Summer Terms are devoted to school-based work. Normally, two English students are located at each school so that, as well as teaching classes on your own, you may also be able to undertake joint teaching, including joint preparation and marking.

We run this course in collaboration with the English and Media Centre (EMC), an award-winning educational charity. EMC tutors will provide you with support throughout the course, drawing on their extensive experience of consultancy for schools and running Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers. This PGCE course benefits from our London location and will broaden your understanding of teaching in multicultural and diverse urban environments. Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

PGCE School Direct

The School Direct school placements work around the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we can only offer places in Early Years / Primary and in Secondary teaching Maths, Modern Languages and Science with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

You will attend the training workshops at the university with other regular PGCE students and carry out placements of 120 days in a school or consortium of schools with a School Direct allocation. This time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Structure

Autumn Term

The first four weeks of the Autumn Term are usually College-based, although you may begin regular visits to your first teaching experience school from the fourth week onwards.

In College, you spend most of your time in a subject group with your subject tutor, who has overall responsibility for your professional development. These sessions introduce you to the basic principles and approaches to teaching and learning in your subject.

There is also a block lecture programme, General Professional Studies (GPS), which explores issues common to all teachers. Within GPS you have an opportunity to study an option in more depth.

From around the fifth or sixth week until the end of the term, you are based for four days a week in a school, working largely within your specialist subject department.

Your school-based tutor is responsible for a programme in school that enables you to relate what you have learned in College to the context of the particular school, and to gradually build up your confidence and expertise in teaching.

Throughout the term, you continue to come into College on Fridays to work with your subject tutor and group to reflect on your experience in school and develop particular areas of expertise.

Spring and Summer terms

The first two weeks of the Spring Term are usually based in College, where you build on the experiences of the Autumn Term to develop your expertise further so that you will be ready to undertake an extended block of teaching.

From around the third week of term until the spring half-term holiday, you spend four days a week in your second school, coming into College on Fridays to reflect on your experiences and develop your expertise with your subject tutor and fellow students. Between the spring and summer half-term holidays you are based full-time in the school.

In effect you work as a full member of a school team, with responsibility for all aspects of planning, teaching and assessing the learning of a number of classes. St Mary's University has a long tradition of teacher training since 1850 and about a third of our students are involved in some form of teacher education. The high quality of the St Mary’s Secondary initial teacher training (ITT) provision has been graded as 'outstanding' by Ofsted and we work in close partnership with a wide range of schools in the London area.

In particular, we pride ourselves on the level of care to support trainee teachers at the start of their professional journey. Our tutors are experienced teachers, who have worked in a range of schools before specialising in ITT. They are actively involved in research to inform practice and they hold a number of important external roles which enhance the provision.

The Secondary PGCE course at St Mary’s integrates core PGCE trainee teachers with School Direct (non-salaried) trainees to lead to the award of a Master's level qualification and recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Why St Mary's

Our experienced science tutors work in close partnership with trainees and the placement schools. We offer an extensive range of government funded subject knowledge enhancement courses that will enable applicants to develop their specialism further or ‘top up’ existing knowledge in preparation for the PGCE course.

If you wish to study for the Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies you will be able to complete several of the modules during your PGCE year. This certificate is often a requirement for teaching in a Catholic school.

Cutting Edge

St Mary's University is fully committed to supporting applicants in shortage specialist subjects and we offer pre-PGCE Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses in mathematics, modern languages and science.

In addition to our core PGCE provision, we offer a range of enrichment activities (e.g. First Aid and IT sessions). This also includes an Academic Reading Club for trainees who wish to explore key issues in greater depth.

At the end of the PGCE course, all trainees have the opportunity to complete a three-week placement in a special education setting. This is highly valued by trainee teachers to broaden their understanding of specific learning needs for some learners.

Tutors are involved in a range of research activity, including teacher resilience and wellbeing, and this informs the provision throughout. There is also a strong focus on digital literacy throughout the course.

School Placements

Trainee teachers are prepared for teaching in partnership with schools that are formally linked to St Mary's and this provides an excellent framework to develop teaching skills.

Trainee teachers are allocated two school placements during the 36-week course. In total, 24 weeks is spent in school to ensure close links between theory and practice throughout.

In line with the University Mission Statement, the programme seeks to prepare teachers for both religious and secular schools at home and abroad with special provision for those intending to teach in Roman Catholic and other Christian schools.

The PGCE Secondary course provision is enhanced by frequent and valued input from practising classroom teachers and colleagues from the senior leadership teams in our partnership schools.

Course Content

The PGCE course aims to produce teachers of the highest quality. This quality is achieved when you match the commitment and dedication of teachers and tutors throughout the programme. As one trainee commented in the end of course evaluation: 'The support from dedicated university tutors and school-based mentors has been unbelievable.'

The PGCE course enables you to gain experience at Key Stages 3 and 4 and also at post-16, though formal assessment is normally only for two of these phases.

University-based Sessions

The stimulating content of St Mary's-based professional studies programme aims to equip you with an understanding of general issues in education, such as the use of data to inform pupil progress and strategies for managing behaviour for learning. The subject-specific sessions include teaching methods, lesson preparation, monitoring and assessing pupils' work and classroom management.

A variety of methods and approaches are considered. Trainees are encouraged to follow up taught sessions through practical work in schools. Trainees must be prepared to take an active part in group work and presentations, and to carry out preparatory and follow-up work outside of taught sessions.

Teaching and Learning

The course tutors use a variety of teaching and learning approaches, including lectures, workshop sessions, collaborative and small-group work, paired work, practical activities, with positive use of technology, individual and group student presentations and some self-supported study.

A number of external cross-curricular visits (e.g. field trips and visits to museums) also take place.

This range of strategies both caters for a range of preferred learning styles and provides good teaching role models for trainees.
