The Chemistry PGCE prepares chemistry student teachers to teach the 11-16 age range. We are committed to creative and interactive approaches to teaching science to promote engagement and learning.

About this programme

Students will acquire a critical understanding of current debates and issues relating to science education, and will be guided and supported in developing their subject knowledge. We expect students to engage with reading and research into science education and to regularly reflect upon their own progress, towards meeting the teaching standards across the 11–16 age range.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE).

Placement

Student teachers undertake at least two placements (totaling 120 days) at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

Key Stage 3: science (including elements of physics, chemistry, biology) 

Key Stage 4: science (all areas) or chemistry (depending on school placement) 

Key Stage 5: AS/A2 level chemistry

Teaching and learning

The Secondary PGCE full-time route is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the Institute of Education as well as time spent in placement schools or colleges. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of a portfolio that links into the induction year (the first year of teaching) and a student's continuing professional development.

The course covers training in a wide variety of teaching techniques with opportunities to try ideas out in the partner schools. This course will equip trainees to teach Chemistry within the 11-18 age range in a variety of schools and colleges (including Welsh medium if requested). The course provides you with training to teach Chemistry up to the A and AS examinations and all the sciences up to at least Year 9 of the secondary school.

The fundamental aims of the PGCE Chemistry programme are to develop the skills of a trainee Chemistry/Science teacher who is able to reflect on practice gained through teaching experience in school; who can analyse that experience in the light of discussion with mentors and others and also in the light of their reading; and evaluate their practice effectively to demonstrate gradual improvement in the standards of their own teaching and pupils' learning.

About this programme

This programme has been designed to enable all candidates to demonstrate that they have met the standards across Key Stages 3 and 4 (11–16 age range).

Students will acquire a critical understanding of current debates and issues relating to science education, and we will guide and support them in developing their subject knowledge. This programme will cover health and safety, management of teaching and learning in laboratories and outdoors, the use of ICT, facilitating small group discussion, meeting pupils' special needs, and assessment. Our facilities include a suite of laboratories and a micro-computing laboratory.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach your specialist subject to all age groups of secondary school children.

You will select a subject that you would like to specialise in and over the course of the year complete two modules in this subject. You will be introduced to a range of theories, practice, pedagogy, current research and literature relevant to that subject. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice.

You will undertake two blocks of school experience, two blocks of school experience, Foundation for 6 weeks in one school, and 12 weeks Development and Consolidation in another.

Classrooms are complex and dynamic places. Becoming an effective teacher is more than just ‘transmitting knowledge’ or `telling pupils how to do it' or about numerical outcomes. Education encompasses a whole range of attributes and requires teachers to be at the cutting edge of their practice. Through dynamic and innovative teaching, we will support and encourage you on your journey to becoming an effective science teacher to inspire a new generation of world-changers.

Our secondary science PGCE programme is grounded in the view that the process of gaining qualified teacher status with a PGCE must essentially be an educational one. We encourage you to form your own opinions on education through first-hand experience and reflective thinking. We anticipate that you will develop qualities that will enable you to become teachers who will not only be outstanding classroom practitioners, but will also be in a position to participate in and influence the development of science education for the future.

At University 

The pedagogy within a science classroom is perhaps somewhat different to what you might see within an English or maths lesson. Our programme focuses on modelling the science classroom in workshops; we will raise lots of questions and encourage you to think critically about what you see and experience in our workshops. We will encourage you to reflect on “what works for you” and incorporate some of these ‘active’ teaching and learning strategies into your own practice. Once in school we hope you will try them out, evaluate and reflect on them to develop your own teacher identity.

As teachers you will help to shape future education policy and practice. We will set out to enable you to make informed decisions. To this end we will promote discussion and get you to question your thoughts on a range of issues central to science teaching; what is science, what is subject knowledge, what knowledge do we need to teach a scientific idea well, do theories link with our own personal viewpoints? These are questions to which there are no set answers. Through our sessions we aim to encourage students to search for their own order and understanding from within. Secure, reflective and questioning science teachers are those who are likely to become true educators of young people – teachers who encourage pupils to think, question and understand.

During the science subject studies sessions, we will focus on the ideas and principles underlying effective teaching. Two broad themes are identifiable through our subject sessions; learning and practical work. Each of these has a key place within the science classroom but what does rigorous learning and effective practical work look like? We will revisit these key areas throughout the programme both at University and in school; taking into account that lessons should be engaging and relevant to every pupils’ needs.

Our programme is an 11-18 programme (science teachers need to be able to teach at least two sciences up to and including GCSE level), so our subject sessions cover pedagogical subject knowledge in aspects of chemistry, biology and physics.

At School

During the first term, you observe, participate in and take responsibility for lessons in one of our partnership schools. You will be allocated a school mentor who will be your “go to” person on a daily basis to facilitate your learning and progress within the classroom. Following an induction period, during which you find out about the school, its pupils and surrounding area, you will take increasing responsibility for the teaching and learning work of particular classes under the supervision of the regular class teacher. Your University tutor will monitor your progress using our virtual learning environment (learn.gold) and visit you during your first school placement.

A professional network of school and University based colleagues will support you throughout the entire programme at University and on your school placements.

We might sum up our programme as having its feet firmly rooted in school science, with its head in theory and with a strong body connecting the two, combined with the realisation that there are many places in which the figure can stand.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) offers scholarships for students studying for a PGCE in physics. To be an IOP Scholar you will need to have outstanding knowledge of school-level physics and the potential to become an inspirational physics teacher. Each scholarship also includes a package of benefits including membership and early career mentoring. 

Royal Society of Chemistry Scholarships

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) offers scholarships for students studying for a PGCE in chemistry. Applicants are expected to have an excellent understanding of chemistry at school level, a passion for chemistry and teaching as well as an excellent ability to explain complex chemistry ideas at school level. The scholarship package includes mentoring by a chemistry expert, meetings with other scholars, free online CPD and opportunities to represent the Royal Society of Chemistry at meetings and conferences on chemistry and chemistry education.

Schools and NQTs testify that the course provides trainees with a solid pedagogical understanding of teaching in their subject area. They rightly believe this is due to an effective balance between practice and pedagogy. We produce reading packs electronically and in hard copy format. There’s a small charge for the hard copy reading packs. You may also be asked to contribute towards trips and some materials for your modules.

Structure

Autumn Term

The first four weeks of the Autumn Term are usually College-based, although you may begin regular visits to your first teaching experience school from the fourth week onwards.

In College, you spend most of your time in a subject group with your subject tutor, who has overall responsibility for your professional development. These sessions introduce you to the basic principles and approaches to teaching and learning in your subject.

There is also a block lecture programme, General Professional Studies (GPS), which explores issues common to all teachers. Within GPS you have an opportunity to study an option in more depth.

From around the fifth or sixth week until the end of the term, you are based for four days a week in a school, working largely within your specialist subject department.

Your school-based tutor is responsible for a programme in school that enables you to relate what you have learned in College to the context of the particular school, and to gradually build up your confidence and expertise in teaching.

Throughout the term, you continue to come into College on Fridays to work with your subject tutor and group to reflect on your experience in school and develop particular areas of expertise.

Spring and Summer terms

The first two weeks of the Spring Term are usually based in College, where you build on the experiences of the Autumn Term to develop your expertise further so that you will be ready to undertake an extended block of teaching.

From around the third week of term until the spring half-term holiday, you spend four days a week in your second school, coming into College on Fridays to reflect on your experiences and develop your expertise with your subject tutor and fellow students. Between the spring and summer half-term holidays you are based full-time in the school.

In effect you work as a full member of a school team, with responsibility for all aspects of planning, teaching and assessing the learning of a number of classes. During this period, you have the opportunity to investigate in greater depth one of the areas introduced in the Autumn Term lecture programme, and to relate it to the specific context of the school in which you are based.

The three or four weeks at the end of the Summer Term are used flexibly for both school and College activities to ensure that all aspects of your professional development have been addressed.

The PGCE Chemistry provides a clear, thoughtful and critical introduction to teaching Chemistry, drawing on leading education research carried out at King’s. We work in close partnership with schools in designing, delivering and assessing our course in order to develop excellent, reflective classroom practitioners.

Description

During the year you will spend over 50 days at King’s and 120 days in schools. You will work with other trainees and tutors in your subject area to consider the principles and practice of teaching your subject including curriculum design, the development of materials, classroom management and lesson planning. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and seminar groups to examine a broad range of educational issues. During both secondary school placements there are occasional days in college for tutorials to support and monitor progress towards the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are crosscurricular research tasks and assignments.

There are two blocks of school experience, one starting in the autumn and the other in the spring. You will spend time observing other teachers and their classes before beginning to teach yourself. You will teach more during the second school experience than you will in the first one. During the year you will also spend time in a primary school so that you can see what pupils experience before they arrive in secondary schools.

The course includes residential fieldwork based at the Field Studies Council centre in Surrey. There are many other opportunities for you to develop your abilities to teach beyond the classroom, in the school grounds and beyond.

Course purpose

The aim of our course is to make you an effective teacher of science and to help you develop high professional standards. The course is designed to prepare science teachers to work in secondary schools as part of a team that teaches science up to Year 11 and chemistry to Years 12 and 13 (post-16).

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You can typically expect:

  • the equivalent of over 50 days of academic sessions at King’s (typically three hours in the morning and/or afternoon spread throughout the academic year)
  • approximately 120 days of teaching placement.* This includes a short period of placement in primary schools (typically between five to nine days in length)
  • five to seven tutorials across the year
  • two visits from a tutor whilst on placement to observe lessons and monitor progress
  • regular** meetings with a mentor, who will be a member of staff at your placement school, whilst on placement
  • written feedback on all credit-bearing assignments within four weeks of the deadline.

*This 120 day figure represents the standard number of placement days. In certain cases, following assessment by course tutors and mentors, students may be required to undertake a greater number of placement days to demonstrate their ability to meet the Teacher Standards.

**Typically each trainee will have a meeting with their mentor during each week they are on placement. In certain circumstances the frequency may vary.

The types of learning commitment encompassed within the course vary depending on modules. For this course one credit represents the equivalent of 10 hours of learning and engagement.

Assessment

  • The 45-credit honours-level module will be assessed by a combination of a written portfolio (equivalent to 8,000 words) and assessment of your teaching practice against the Teaching Standards as set out by the government’s Department for Education. Progress in meeting the teaching standards will be monitored through three progress reports that will be completed by staff at the placement school.
  • The 30-credit master’s-level modules will each be assessed by a 6,000 word written assignment heavily based on in-school research that trainees undertakes.
  • The 15-credit honours-level module will be assessed by an assignment focusing on data collection methods in the school environment.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect.

Location

Students undertake placements in secondary schools that work in partnership with King’s College London. Partnership schools are located across central London and the Greater London area. Whilst every effort is made to place PGCE trainees in local schools, due to the changing nature of initial teacher education and limited availability of placements in certain subject areas, trainees should be prepared to travel to their placement schools throughout the Greater London area and beyond.

Students also organise their own short placement at a state primary school. Further information on this short placement is provided in the offer holder pack and during the course.

Career prospects

The majority of trainees go into teaching or other areas of education; many become heads of departments or members of senior management teams; some take up careers in educational administration in the advisory or inspection services.

Learning and Teaching in Science

You will explore the science curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 through practical work in chemistry, physics and biology that leads to the development of subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. These sessions will take place in newly built laboratories equipped to model modern school science facilities. Several learning and teaching themes are developed throughout the year including safe management of laboratory practical work, teaching outside the classroom, how science works, contemporary issues in science teaching, using models and analogies, literacy, differentiation, use of games, pupil misconceptions, using ICT, inclusion, questioning techniques and citizenship. At all times you are supported by well qualified and experienced tutors.

School Experience

You will spend the majority of your time on the course in schools, developing your teaching skills. You will complete two main teaching placements at different secondary schools; one of 8 weeks and a second longer placement of 12 weeks. During both placements you are likely to have the opportunity teach science across Key Stages 3 and 4 and teach your specialism (biology, physics or chemistry) at Key Stage 4. During your placements your professional development will be supported by both the school and Newman tutors. Newman has an excellent reputation with local schools for providing a strong partnership with schools that support students during their placements. Successfully complete this NCTL-accredited PGCE Secondary Science with Chemistry course to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and become a science teacher for students up to 14 years old and chemistry teacher for 15 to 16-year-olds. After the course

On successful completion of the course you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for teaching science at Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14 years old) and Key Stage 4 (ages 14 to 16 years old), and your chemistry specialism at Key Stage 4. London Metropolitan's students have an excellent rate of gaining Qualified Teacher Status and finding teaching positions within six months of graduating. Our trainees have gone on to become chemistry teachers at schools including Cardinal Pole Catholic School, South Hampstead High School, Platanos College and more.

Funding

Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

Entry requirements

You must have a good degree (minimum 2:2 but 2:1 or 1st preferred) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent, with a significant chemistry or chemistry-related content, for example from biochemistry or materials science. You must have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in both English language and mathematics prior to application and if you are offered an interview you will take a written test to assess your standard of English.

For entry onto a teaching course you will also be required to pass the Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy. Please visit the Department for Education website for further information.

There is an expectation that you will have had some general experience of working with secondary age students in a school setting. In preparation for the selection interview stage of the recruitment process you are required to engage in a teaching episode, observed by an experienced qualified teacher.

As part of the selection procedure, the interview panel will expect you to demonstrate your knowledge of chemical sciences and will assess personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for initial teacher training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

All of our programmes are modular and you can use IOE PGCE credits to contribute towards a Masters qualification in education. The IOE was recognised by Ofsted as outstanding or good with some outstanding features following their latest visit for its “high quality” teacher training that inspire its students “to want to be outstanding teachers”. In the Training and Development Agency for Schools Newly Qualified Teacher Survey (2010), 83 per cent of our NQTs rated the overall
quality of their training as good or very good.
