Why study International Oil & Gas Management at Dundee?

The MSc International Oil & Gas Management consists of a deliberate blend of business and management studies which has been created to run alongside a range of practical, skills-based activities and an assortment of student-centred extracurricular opportunities.

The programme uniquely contextualises the study within the petroleum industry from beginning to end, ensuring that our graduates can "hit the ground running" in management roles in the industry when they leave. Guest speaker programmes and input from practitioners also enhance the student experience.

The programme draws on the globally recognised expertise of the staff within the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

CEPMLP achieved a high research rating in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise as part of the submission from the University's Law Unit of Assessment. The Unit finished among the top four in Scotland (out of 11), and among the top 19 out of 67 in the UK. All of its research was classified as being of an international standard.

What's great about International Oil & Gas Management at Dundee?

The aim of the MSc programme is to prepare participants for managerial, advisory and academic positions in the energy sector - private sector and government. The programme aims to provide an intellectually challenging academic programme of study, which will demand of the student the ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate key theoretical concepts and practical applications in energy with an emphasis on the economic dimensions of the subject. This will prepare participants for success in the rapidly evolving and highly competitive global business climate that characterises the energy sector.

Students will be expected to apply learning in a simulated workplace environment, utilising case study method as a vehicle for knowledge acquisition, reflection and application. This will prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive global business climate, where continuous innovation is crucial to productivity and growth in all aspects of the natural resources, energy and international business industries.

The study context is positioned at the strategic level to reflect both the current and future work environment of the intended participants.
The programme is also designed to develop self-confidence and the ability to present efficient, logical answers to complex problems; to give students methodological and problem solving skills designed to assist decision making in business situations. Furthermore, the programme will facilitate discussions, debate and analysis of business issues and problems within an international environment and develop transferable skills particularly in working with groups as well as in presentation and communication skills.

How you will be taught

The MSc is made up of compulsory and elective modules with this taught component being followed by either:
A dissertation of up to 15,000 words on a topic approved by an academic supervisor

An Internship report - students who choose this option are required to source an organisation willing to offer a 3-month work placement, approved by an academic supervisor

An extended PhD Proposal - students who propose to follow up the MSc with a PhD may, with the approval of an academic supervisor, submit a 10,000 word PhD proposal

About the Course

The MSc Applied Corporate Brand Management is offered in a choice of two routes:
MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management – a one year standard master's

OR

MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) 16 months

The programme enjoys the input from a dedicated corporate advisory board made up of experts from the branding world, including senior brand executives of multi-national firms, brand consultants and design gurus. You can read more about this in the Special Features section.

The MSc in Applied Corporate Brand Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a 16 week work placement component at a company or a consultancy. This unique feature of the work placement distinguishes our programme from other similar Masters in the country.

The Applied Corporate Brand Management programme covers issues of branding in blue chip companies, the service industry, banks, petroleum companies, lifestyle organisations, corporate brand heritage, nation and place branding.

You will examine the core contents of branding at the corporate level rather than at the product level. In other words, teaching on the programme focuses on branding of the corporation rather than branding the product.

The focus on corporate branding considers the following components:
Corporate identity
Corporate image and reputation
Corporate design
Corporate culture
Corporate behaviour
Corporate brand structure and brand strategy

You will undertake a project in collaboration with branding firms as part of your consultancy-based dissertation option. Examples include projects that are concerned with measuring the corporate image and ascertaining brand success of a chosen corporation.

Aims

In addition to offering an unrivalled opportunity to study and evaluate not only contemporary theory relating to corporate branding, the programme will also offer you the chance to examine current research relating to the management of an organisation’s corporate reputation, its corporate identity and its corporate communications.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the issues related to marketing at a corporate level.

You will gain a comprehensive appreciation of how to apply corporate branding and marketing theory and practice in the context of a contemporary organisation.

Since the advent of the Health and Safety at Work Act the philosophy of managing work based hazards has changed from a reactive rule based protocol to one based on the assessment and management of risks. More recently there has been the recognition of the need to go beyond simply avoiding unwanted outcomes and developing a wider dimension of organisational resilience.

The systematic assessment and management of workplace hazards demand the development of existing knowledge and skills. Good employers now recognise that managing health and safety has not only legal and moral imperatives, but also makes good business sense.

Loughborough University has been providing training in occupational health and safety management for more than 35 years. On successful completion, participants will be able to make better informed decisions concerning the management of occupational health and safety.

See the website http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/sbe/executive-education/programmes/accredited/ohsm/

About the Programme

The programme is aimed at professional health and safety advisors and managerial, engineering and scientific staff with responsibilities for occupational health and safety. It gives them the academic knowledge and skills to evaluate operational requirements against health and safety policies which have to respond to a changing regulatory, social and economic climate.

The courses are designed and delivered for participants working within the discipline who can attend the University for a series of short courses ranging from one to four days. Such attendance promotes a much more fulfilling learning experience through direct interaction with acknowledged experts and other students and avoids the isolation of courses delivered entirely by distance learning.

The objectives of the programme are to provide:
- A comprehensive understanding of current occupational health and safety management issues;
- The academic basis for Chartered Status of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) (for holders of the Diploma/MSc); and
- Flexible training for working professionals who do not have the opportunity for full-time study.

Professional Development

‌Holders of the Diploma (and MSc) satisfy the requirements for graduate membership of IOSH and membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM), providing professional recognition for your studies.

Adding value to your employer

The course is designed to be challenging, career enhancing and geared towards real life management, developing skills you can apply to the benefit of your organisation, and assessing these through work-based assignments which provide a direct return on investment. You will also benefit from excellent opportunities to network with professionals from a range of sectors, with the following organisations represented on the programme in recent years:
- Aluminium Bahrain
- Arriva Plc
- Balfour Beatty
