Approximately 50% of the programme is delivered online in the Oxford Brookes virtual learning environment through which you can discuss, debate and support each other in your studies. You are encouraged to communicate electronically with your supervisor and tutors (eg by email, Skype, etc).

All teaching, learning and assessment activities draw on the professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of all participants and encourage critical reflection. Teaching staff have research interests and expertise in coaching and mentoring and related fields. Visiting speakers from business and industry provide further input. You can attend events from the Oxford Brookes Coaching and Mentoring Society (OBCAMS), which meets monthly, and attracts outside speakers and presenters from all areas of coaching and mentoring.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is based on coursework assignments and a dissertation - there are no exams.

Course benefits

The postgraduate certificate stage is accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level. We are the only UK university to offer this.
The course is unique in the market in that it examines how a coach or mentor can best work with an individual in the context of their organisational system. We draw on theories and case studies, and examine individual and organisational psychology. We help you develop your own practice as a coach or mentor. This involves examining our presence and approaches as well as commercial matters such as business development and networking.

The course is delivered by a team of nationally renowned tutors who are specialists in the field. You have the opportunity to study emerging areas such as team coaching and applied practice. We also provide one-to-one coaching supervision throughout the programme to help you reflect on your own personal development and gauge the effectiveness and ethics of your work.

Learning and assessment

During the course you examine and critically analyse coaching and mentoring theories and concepts. We adopt coaching as a learning style, which enhances learning and allows us to examine and reflect on different coaching approaches. You benefit from:
-Facilitated group discussions and experiential activity.
-Feedback on your skills practice.
-Case studies and experiences from tutors.
-Supervision groups for further practice and reflection, supported by a member of the tutor team.
-One-to-one coaching/mentoring supervision support.
-One-to-one supervision for the advanced practitioner inquiry module and MSc dissertation stage.
-Membership of the coaching and mentoring research group (CMRU) which meets regularly to discuss research projects.
-Support you to develop your own network of coachees/mentees.

Professional recognition

The Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring level is primarily focused on developing students' professional practice to meet the professional expectations of the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) at Senior Practitioner level. Students successfully completing the Postgraduate Certificate will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have completed a programme of training accredited by the EMCC at Senior Practitioner level.

Course structure

Part time – typically 8 months for the Postgraduate Certificate and 2 years for the MSc.
Modules are taught in 4 day blocks, with approximately 8 weeks between each one. Starts February 2017.

This course consists of three separate stages, the Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master’s, each taking a year to complete. Teaching is delivered through five workshops over ten days covering a range of specific coaching topics, including 30 hours of coaching practise.

The Ashridge Masters in Executive Coaching is a two-year, part-time, modular, self-directed programme. It is an opportunity to review and re-launch your practice, make the best of your natural skills, learn about yourself as a coach through supervision and co-coaching, and meet some of the most experienced practitioners in the field.

You will develop your coaching and mentoring skills, either to integrate into your existing consultancy and coaching work or to create a solid foundation for a new coaching and consulting practice.

The programme takes a relational psychological perspective, which will deepen your clients’ self-awareness and their understanding of the web of key relationships in their organisation. The aim is to develop your ability to respond to, initiate and enable change through the coaching process.

This programme has been developed by experienced coaching practitioners who have a combination of research, psychological and organisational development experience. Two of the programme modules have been awarded the EMCC European Quality Award (EQA) at Senior Practitioner level.

There are five modules altogether but you do not have to commit to the full degree programme until the end of module 3. As both of these modules are Open Programmes, you may choose just to start with one of these and then sign up for the degree if you would like to go further.

Delivery and assessment

A flexible approach to learning and assessment will characterise this degree. Knowledge and understanding are acquired and enhanced through lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, staff/student tutorials, guided independent study, professional practice experiences and through the University’s virtual learning environment – Succeed. Accessibility of the curriculum is in line with institutional policies and it is anticipated coaches with disabilities, as well as coaches of athletes with disabilities, will form part of the cohort on a regular basis.
Students receive a School handbook describing the course outline, module details, procedures and assessment criteria. In addition, module outlines include details of timetable, content, and assessments. The assessment procedures are in line with institutional policies and will be conducted in such a way as to adhere to adult learning principles. This means that content and learning demonstrate relevance, problem solving, learning by doing and a strong element of self-direction and ownership. The MSc Sports Coaching is an advanced programme that considers the scientific dimensions of sport coaching. Integration of technology is a key aspect of the programme and will be used to support the development of research and practice in coaching and coach education.

The teaching team have significant applied expertise in the subject and have developed innovative, technology enhanced approaches to learning and teaching in coaching. There will also be the opportunity to undertake relevant vocational qualifications and work placement while on the programme. This will be tailored to your needs through working with a tutor and be aligned with the SportCoach UK Level 4 competencies.

Course detail

The Sport Coaching will utilise and evaluate concepts from a range of disciplines including sport psychology, athlete development and movement analysis. This aims to challenge your approach to coaching and provide a broader perspective to support children and talented performers. The programme is for individuals holding a sport coaching related undergraduate degree or those with significant practical coaching experience and qualifications who want to consider the application of scientific principles to their work as a coach.

The learning activities and assessments on the programme are highly applied and focussed upon developing students’ ability to evaluate critically the quality and impact of their own work. A key aspect is the engagement with existing academic
literature and the production of research to provide evidence that can be used to inform coaching practice.

There is scope for negotiation in terms of practical work and focus of assessment on modules depending upon individual experience or areas of interest. For example, on the Psychological Dimensions of Coaching module this could mean development of an individualised psychological skills intervention for a high level athlete or an educational workshop for a youth team with a range of needs and abilities.

Modules

• Performance analysis – using advanced performance analysis techniques to collect data in specific settings to inform athletic needs.

• Research Methods – become informed consumers and producers of research in a range of paradigms and using a variety of approaches.

• Psychological Dimensions of coaching – appreciate existing psychological concepts and how they can be used to promote behaviour change in sport performance and coaching setting with diverse audiences.

• Athlete Development – appreciate the inter-play between growth and maturation and use physiological and psychological markers to develop performance during growth.

• Produce a written manuscript of publishable quality that addresses a research question relevant to strength and conditioning.

Placements

Work-related learning is a key part of the activities and assessments on modules. In order to effectively undertake these tasks students will need to draw upon experiences from employment, continuous personal development (CPD) or a work placement. There are opportunities to undertake relevant CPD and work placement while on the programme.

Completion of a Personal and Academic Development Profile (PADP), through the academic tutor system, will help to identify which opportunities individuals could access to support their working towards the UKCC Level 4 generic competencies.

An example of the types of opportunities available through our partnerships would be a movement coaching experience with North Yorkshire FA Girls Centre of Excellence or a Level 3 coaching qualification facilitated by YSJ Active. Such experiences and skills will support the programme of academic study by offering tangible examples for application of theory, critical analysis and reflective practice.

The Professional Development (Coaching Science) programme is designed to allow coaches from all sporting environments to develop their practice and professional network by completing a range of portfolio projects negotiated in partnership with personal tutors from Hartpury College’s HE Sport department. Portfolio projects can be completed by individuals or may form a component of a group effort with coaches working together to investigate an aspect of personal practice before creating an output, such as a report or presentation, that can be published to the wider coaching community. These portfolios can therefore focus on part of the learner’s current workplace responsibilities or be used to plan future ventures directly linked to the coach’s environment and career progression plans.

This innovative approach to postgraduate study allows coaches to focus their research on a number of possible coaching contexts including teaching, coach education and supporting high performance athletes, and therefore to design their own powerful professional development experiences. Core coaching modules are studied alongside students completing the MSc Coaching Science programme, allowing valuable sharing of perspectives and resources across and amongst two related courses that each have individual development needs and group collaboration as their key concern.

All students complete three core modules that focus on the craft of coaching practice, and related areas of concern such as coach philosophy, language, behaviour and planning. Whilst involved in these key debates coaches will also be developing a personal learning plan via an appreciation of reflective practice. These experiences are collated in a Professional Development Portfolio with discussions amongst learning peers and with personal tutors central to this course component. Upon completion of the programme’s core modules students qualify for a Postgraduate Certificate and may choose to continue their studies via focused research into a single coaching context (perhaps due to it mirroring their current workplace or career aspirations) or through study of a broader range of topics, each negotiated by themselves and their tutor. Completion of this phase of the programme sees students eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma and able to carry out an extended final project that once successfully completed results in the award of a Master’s degree.

Module delivery will be supported by a range of student-centred approaches (e.g. distance learning and practice-based activities) and will include peer learning sets which could be face-to-face and/or supported electronically. The programme design team is committed to adult learning approaches that include the development of learning contracts and critical and independent enquiry for the coaching practice-based elements. Assessment methods reflect adult learning principles also, allowing students to shape and develop academic work that focuses on current coaching practice and personal development. Students will benefit from an enhanced learning experience by engaging in a variety of creative teaching mediums such as mentorship, peer modelling, reflective discussion, video observation feedback and experiments in practice.

The programme can be completed full time in one year; part time routes are available and should be planned with the Programme Manager.

This MA is aimed at experienced internal and independent coaches, and will develop your skills, knowledge and professional standing. The course takes an action-learning approach to explore issues in coaching practice.

Supervisors will work with you to deepen your research and practical skills, while peer-based learning enables you to share your own professional practice. The course structure gives you scope to focus on the coaching priorities and interests most relevant to your own working contexts. Modules cover ethical, organisational and personal perspectives, with separate research project and dissertation components. All our postgraduates benefit from a blended learning approach, which includes at least 72 hours of applied coaching with actual or practice clients.

You should have an appropriate level of coaching experience to engage in supportive and challenging conversations with other participants. Although our standard entrance requirement is a 2:ii undergraduate degree, you’ll still be considered if you can offer considerable coaching experience.

The MSc Career Coaching programme has been designed to reflect the growing interest in career coaching by individuals seeking to manage their career development more effectively; and by organisations who want to develop the talent and resilience of their staff. This level of interest is reflected in the progression pathway for talent management that features in the National Occupation Standards (NOS) for Career Development set by the Career Development Institute (CDI). The course will therefore appeal to UK and international students who are existing human service professionals who want to develop their career coaching skills; those who are considering entering the role; and existing career coaches who are seeking a course that is professionally accredited by the CDI (subject to approval).

The MSc Career Coaching with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University. Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

To prepare students for the challenges of the global employment market and to strengthen and develop their broader personal and professional skills Coventry University has developed a unique Global Leaders Programme.

The objectives of the programme, in which postgraduate and eligible undergraduate students can participate, is to provide practical career workshops and enable participants to experience different business cultures.

If you wish to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding in the rapidly developing field of coaching without giving up employment, then this course is ideal.

This course consists of three separate stages, the Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master’s, each taking a year to complete. You can enter the programme at any stage relevant to your qualifications and experience. Completion of each stage enables you to continue to the next, with or without a break between each stage, but there is no obligation to do so. These part-time, work-based courses allow you to fit in studying easily around work and other commitments.

This programme is aimed at leaders, managers and training professionals who want to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in this rapidly developing field. Students may be seeking to use a coaching approach in a line management role, looking to build a coaching culture within their organisation to enhance performance or even embark on a second career as a professional freelance coach. This course is provided by the University of Portsmouth in conjunction with The Performance Coach, a well-respected company which provides coaching, training and consultancy services.

Module Details

This final Master’s stage of the programme includes two days of research methods training held at the University of Portsmouth to enable you to develop a research proposal as the basis for completing your final research-based investigative project/dissertation. The unit in research methods will specifically cover the theory and application of research methodologies and consider concepts and qualitative methods and their use in research.

Programme Assessment

The course takes a work-based learning approach which allows you to apply this knowledge and theory to your workplace. This approach means you produce current and applied work-based assignments for assessment.

This programme is assessed, quality assured and awarded by the University of Portsmouth whilst TPC's world-class trainers and facilitators deliver course content and work with you to develop your knowledge and understanding of coaching.

Assessment consists of a 3,000 word research proposal leading to a 12,000 word Investigative Project/Dissertation allowing you to pursue a topic of personal interest which may directly relate to future employment, your organisation or to opportunities for future employment.
