We have recently developed our innovative Masters in Person-Centred Practice (PcP) Framework with a suite of course routes which place the values of person-centredness at their core. These routes offer practitioners the opportunity to build upon their experience and develop an understanding of the knowledge and evidence that positively contributes to the health and wellbeing of persons, groups and populations. You can opt to study the route which best meets your professional background and future aspirations.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registered Nurses already working in, or wishing to work in, the community can undertake a specified group of modules that allows them to achieve a community qualification or registration recognised by the NMC in District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing.

There are three core modules that enable you to obtain a PgCert. You will then study modules appropriate to your desired route.

The routes in the Person-Centred Practice Framework seek to influence and enable the transformative processes of personal and professional development through engagement, facilitation and evaluation of person-centred teaching and learning approaches. It is designed to meet the professional needs of practitioners from all disciplines working in a variety of different health and social care settings.

The Framework is innovative and interactive, emphasising application of theory to your practice context. It will enable you to critically engage with, evaluate and synthesise the evidence and research to promote the development and enhancement of person centred culture and practice. This develops a pro-active, transformative and reflective approach to meeting the public health and social needs of individuals, families, groups and populations.

You can personalise your learning to your own situation eg mental health, social care, infection control, acute care and community health. International students are particularly welcome as they offer a varied and different perspective to the context in which the learning occurs.

Learning, teaching and assessment

Our teaching, learning and assessment strategy is framed by our core philosophical concepts of personhood, person-centredness, human valuing, healthful relations, human potential and development, supportive and enabling environments. Central to this strategy is the need for learners to engage in the learning experiences, a readiness to listen and explore, preparedness to be open to

experiences and a resolve to keep going. This environment will generate an ethos of engagement and criticality where students can explore and challenge theories, practices and different sources of knowledge creatively in an atmosphere of high challenge and high support. We will achieve this learning environment through a focus on three pillars of learning activity namely:

- Student-centred experiential and collaborative learning;

- Reflexivity and critical discourse;

- Sustainable and ethical evidence-based teaching.

Students will be supported to challenge their thinking, values and beliefs; through the posing of complex activities and questions, and develop resilient and sustainable approaches to their learning and practice in response to these. Critical to this process is the use of diverse knowledge, scholarly inquiry processes and evidence informed materials to engage and enliven the processes of learning.

Assessment strategies will encourage application to practice. In line with the framework’s philosophy, a wide range of sustainable strategies are used to ensure assessment diversity. This will be achieved through the use of varied strategies which draw on the student’s own areas of practice such as portfolio development, practice proposals, annotated bibliographies, simulation events, games, seminar presentations and self-determined contextual assignment topics. Tutor, peer and self-assessment, including within virtual environments (eg [email protected], Values Exchange), will be an important component of approaches to formative and summative assessment.

For students undertaking NMC recognised specialist qualification and registration (District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing), the course is 50% practice-based and requires placement in an approved practice with a Practice Teacher or Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor. Placement will be negotiated with your supporting NHS area.

Teaching hours and attendance

Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part-time.

Links with professional bodies

The routes allow you to gain the higher level knowledge and skills required for advanced practice. It does not gain accreditation with the NMC unless students are undertaking the Specialist Practitioner Qualification in District Nursing or registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)

Other entry requirements information

International: Where your degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 6.5 and no individual component score below 6.0.

Criminal records check: For students undertaking NMC approved qualifications a satisfactory criminal records check will be required. Compliance with the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and mental health legislation for clinical placement and employability in statutory services, for work with children and in other sensitive areas of employment..

About

This programme leads to the academic awards of PGCert/PGDip/MSc in Palliative Care. The Postgraduate Certificate is awarded after completing 60 credits and the Postgraduate Diploma after completing 120 credits.

For the Postgraduate Diploma there are four compulsory modules: Principles of Palliative & End of Life Care (30 credits), Loss, Grief & Bereavement (15 credits) Therapeutic Communication Skills for Health and Social Care Professionals (15 credits) and Advanced Methods in Research and Development in Health and Social Care (30 credits). Course detail

The certificate in counselling gives you the chance to develop counselling skills, so it is useful for a wide range of roles and also a first step towards full qualification as a Professional Counsellor. UWE Bristol also provides a Diploma in Professional Studies Counselling, which you can apply for when you have completed this Certificate successfully. Alternatively, if you have an undergraduate Psychology degree (with Graduate Basis for Chartership with the British Psychological Society) you can go on to apply for our Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

We introduce counselling skills through student-centred and experiential learning techniques, with the opportunity to consider a wide variety of counselling-related subjects. For example, you will investigate different models of counselling and learn what it is like to be a client. You'll come to clearly understand client-counsellor contracts, develop self-awareness and learn when counselling is appropriate. You will also be trained in the safe and ethical use of counselling skills, and develop an awareness of its limitations.

Format

The course comprises several elements to help you develop your counselling skills, along with a firm background knowledge and understanding of its approaches, theories and disciplines:

• Peer support - You will pair up with a fellow student and meet weekly for peer support. This helps you develop self-awareness and listening skills.

• Introduction to counselling - This consists of training in basic listening skills, giving and receiving feedback, the use of different types of questions and how to 'challenge' appropriately in your work. We also focus on key issues relating to boundaries and ethical practice.

• Person-centered, Psychodynamic and Gestalt approaches to counselling - In the first unit of the course, we cover the person-centered approach to give you a solid foundation in the practice of counselling skills. The second unit covers either Psychodynamic or Gestalt counselling skills, to build an understanding of another significant approach in contemporary counselling.

• Group work - Sessions that involve focusing on the theory of group work and the processes of the group.

• Practical work - Spread throughout the course, this will include an opportunity to develop your counselling skills with feedback from tutors, as well as developing your assessment and self-assessment skills.

• Reading - You will be given a reading list which suggests key texts, and undertake other reading set by course tutors.

Careers / Further study

This qualification is invaluable to develop your counselling skills and enhance your career prospects if you're in existing employment in education, the NHS, voluntary agencies, social services, government schemes on in the private sector. It can also help those wishing to become professional counsellors to progress onto further study, and is a prerequisite to studying the Diploma level.

MISSION

The mission of the UWS master’s in human nutrition and functional medicine (HNFM) program is to prepare learners to serve as outstanding health care clinicians, consultants, educators, administrators and researchers in the field of human nutrition and functional medicine.

PROGRAM

Our clinically-oriented human nutrition and functional medicine program is the only fully accredited master’s degree in functional medicine, having been granted regional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the highest level of academic accreditation available in the U.S. This program is 100 percent online as offered as a collaborative endeavor between UWS and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), the organization which founded and developed the key functional medicine concepts used today.

Functional medicine is a science-based, patient-centered and systems-oriented approach to helping people achieve and maintain excellent health. This is accomplished primarily through natural methods, with diet and nutrition as a central focus. It is a forefront model for health care practice that seeks to address the causes of disease and dysfunction rather than suppressing symptoms. Founded on a holistic view of health, functional medicine delves deep into the biochemical and genetic individuality of each patient.

Why choose UWS for a master’s in nutrition?

This program includes advanced instruction in clinical nutrition, similar to other master’s level nutrition programs, but it goes far beyond by also presenting extensive educational content on functional medicine principles and practices derived from the Institute for Functional Medicine. These include important interdisciplinary and evidence-based perspectives, patient assessments and clinical interventions designed to enhance the function of the whole person.

It is primarily a clinically focused degree, with emphasis on treating individual or multiple conditions and their risk factors using dietary and nutritional interventions. Every course contains elements of clinical assessment and diagnosis. There is also a strong focus on wellness promotion and general health in order to meet the clinician’s primary goal of preventing disease and metabolic dysfunction before they occur.

SCHEDULE

The program consists of 50 quarter-credits of graduate coursework (33 semester credits) and can be completed in seven quarters (under two years) if taken at the recommended pace of 7-8 credits (usually two courses) per quarter, though students may move more quickly or more slowly through the program. We recognize that the life situations of our students vary considerably in terms of their family, employment and community commitments, thus we are flexible with regard to speed and prefer that students take the time they need in order to learn the material well.

Additionally, it is possible to take a leave of absence for a quarter or more if needed. As long as the intended schedule is communicated with the registrar, it is possible to extend the program to better suit a student’s individual needs.

Classes are admitted twice per year, with Fall (October) and Spring (April) starts.

The programme is informed by recent work to clarify professional career pathway stages and competencies for advanced practice in primary care. The programme covers core competencies relating to advanced practice including: direct clinical competence as a generalist, leadership and collaborative practice, improving quality and developing practice, and developing self and others.

The programme aims to develop expert generalists who are able to provide accessible, first contact preventive care, and diagnosis and management of acute and long term conditions. It produces practitioners who are able to work well within a skill-mix team to develop a responsive and effective person-centred primary care. The programme facilitates the development of a portfolio of competencies across clinical areas.

People who experience a psychotic illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and psychotic depression, can and do recover. However, long-term recovery is dependent on the timely delivery of effective treatment.

The MSc Early Intervention in Psychosis develops your academic and clinical skills in the identification and treatment of psychosis. Early intervention is an evidence-based, holistic and person-centered approach that is highly effective in reducing the long-term impact of psychotic illness on the individual and their families. It has now become an integral part of mental health services in the UK and worldwide. The course combines biological, psychological and social perspectives, reflecting the multi-faceted nature of the illness. You will learn through classroom teaching and a clinical placement in an early intervention service within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The knowledge and experience acquired on this course are relevant and applicable to all areas of mental health.

Our course is designed for students who want to develop their academic and clinical expertise and experience before applying for clinical psychology training. It is also ideal for mental health professionals (eg doctors, clinical psychologists, nurses) aiming to enhance their career prospects. Furthermore, it provides a robust foundation for students who aim to conduct further research at PhD level in the future.

You will be taught by mental health professionals with extensive experience in delivering early intervention in psychosis and academics who have carried out pioneering research in this area.

This programme is designed to train aspiring research scientists and budding IT professionals who wish to rely on numerical proficiency to further their career goals. The programme consists of a training aspect of taught components (3 modules approximately during the first 3 months) and a significant interdisciplinary research project centered towards computational mathematics (9 months)

Research topics are chosen by students from a list of topics mirroring the computational expertise of the Mathematics group and the newly founded Systems Analytics Research Institute at Aston, with Computationally oriented projects in for example, biology, optimization, pattern analysis and physics as well as finance. The projects are supervised by academics from the Mathematics group and the Systems Analytics Research Institute at Aston.

The MSc integrates a taught component of three modules over approximately three months (30 credits) with a substantial individual research project lasting nine months (150 credits)

Core modules:
-Computational Mathematics (10 Credits)
-Research skills and Professional Development (10 Credits)
-Specialist/Technical Research Skills (10 Credits)

Exemption from these modules may be arranged through APL or APEL, provided this is done prior to enrolment.

Personal Development

Students will have the opportunity to carry out a research project in collaboration with industry and through this learn about the application context of technology and the interaction between research and business.
