Course detail

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
• Develop a historical perspective with regard to the development and impact of artistic activity in Canada.
• Design and implement efficient box office eservices (including reservations and refund policies, ticket sales, staffing and customer services and inventory seat control), contract with touring companies for performances.
• Design and produce exhibitions for galleries and museums including labelling, display and public education.
• Plan, implement and manage fundraising activities to secure grant support from private foundations, corporations and government agencies.
• Plan, implement and manage fundraising activities and practices of public relations and communications, particularly as applied to the field of the arts.
• Develop a basic understanding of the negotiation and administration of arts contracts.
• Design and implement effective marketing and promotion strategies.
• Develop a wide range of basic administrative skills pertaining to human resources management, facilities management, organizational structure and internal relations and financial management.

Work Placement

Two guided field placements are highlights of the program, offering students relevant experience and the development of mentoring relationships. Students have participated in placements with more than 100 regional, national and international arts and culture organizations including The National Ballet; The Royal Conservatory of Music; The Stratford Festival; the Hockey Hall of Fame; and numerous galleries, theatres, concert halls, museums and festivals. Students are responsible, with assistance, for arranging their own field placement locations and terms, and for the completion of the required 420 hours.

The Performing Arts Medicine MSc at UCL is a unique programme providing specialised training to those interested or already involved in offering health services to this very special sector of instrumental musicians, singers, dancers, actors and other performing artists.

Degree information

The MSc and diploma cover musculoskeletal injury, performance psychology, pain management, assessment and rehabilitation, disability, travelling and touring, dance and music performance science, management of the professional voice and research methodology. MSc students also engage in a research project and dissertation. The certificate is a limited curriculum version for non-clinicians or clinicians who wish to upgrade at a later time.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The MSc programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and the research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (eight core modules, 120 credits) A Postgraduate Certificate (four core modules, 60 credits). There are no optional modules for this degree.

Dissertation/research project
All MSc students undertake a research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 6,000–7,000 words, a presentation and a viva.

Teaching and learning
The delivery of the programme is through lectures, tutorials or workshops. Performing arts clinics and performance settings when possible are also included in the programme. Details about the lecturers and tutors can be found here.

Assessment is through coursework, written examinations and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Graduates gain in-depth knowledge of the diverse field of performing arts medicine. Their specialised skills can be incorporated in their own professional practice or they can participate in performing arts clinics in various settings e.g. conservatoires, orchestras, music or dance colleges.

The Shared Modules will allow you to continue to develop your understanding of a creative practice, or a specialist area of management. This module, therefore, comprises studies in one area of creative practice eg. Music, Theatre and Performance, Visual Arts, Entrepreneurship, or Cultural Diplomacy. (For some modules it will be necessary for a student to have a background in the area they wish to study as they are primarily concerned with the discipline rather than its administration/management – for example in music).

Summer term

Taught one day a week, you will have lectures and seminars that cover contemporary arts management issues such as: copyright and performing rights; touring; cultural leadership and diplomacy; and further develops some areas introduced earlier in the year, such as arts and tourism. Whether your project is focussed on the history and theory of art and design, film and television, fine art or performance practice, or wider aspects of visual and material culture, you will be supported by a supervisory team with expertise in your subject.

Your supervisors will be academic specialists with in-depth knowledge of the critical issues relating to your topic, hands-on experience in appropriate research methodologies, and a highly regarded reputation of publishing scholarly materials, or exhibiting or performing works.Arts staff have specialist knowledge in Fine Art and Performance practice, art and design theory, film and television studies, curating, landscape, architecture, fashion, socially engaged arts, and digital arts practices.

Furthermore, if your project spans disciplines, your supervisory team may include staff members from different departments. Whatever your interests, you will be supported by the expertise of highly research-active staff whose work is of recognised excellence.

Teaching And Assessment

The Arts MRes is based around self-directed study, but you are supported by a framework of three modules. Research Methods and Critical Contexts in semester one are based around a series of seminars, and encourage the discussion and exchange of ideas between students with focussed research interests, but shared intellectual investment in the themes, concepts, practices and methods of visual and material culture. Assessment is through written assignments totalling 6000 words, or a smaller written element supported by materials for practice-based students (30 credits per module).

The semester two Research Development module is shared with students from MRes Humanities courses, to collaborate in all elements of organising (structuring, fundraising, marketing and publicity) and staging a cross-disciplinary symposium. You are assessed on a written paper, and a presentation at the symposium (totalling 30 credits). The culmination of your Arts MRes project is a final 20,000 word dissertation, or 10,000 word dissertation and body of work for practice-based students (90 credits).

Learning Environment

The Arts MRes will embed you in a vibrant postgraduate research culture, in which the formal framework of academic learning is enhanced by a multitude of opportunities to develop your specific research interests and skills, and widen the scope of your scholarly development. The modules themselves are based around seminars which encourage discussion and the exchange of ideas between researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

In addition you have access to specialist postgraduate training workshops, and events both on and beyond the campus. Fine Art practice-based students have access to studio space at the Baltic 39 studios, and all students are continually informed of events and opportunities of special interest to their research through the electronic learning portal, while regular individual tutorials with project supervisors will enable you to develop your project effectively.

The course is enhanced by strong partnerships and links with leading cultural organisations and practices in the North East of England and beyond - many of which are now employing our previous graduates.

An eight-week placement in a creative or heritage organisation of your choice can also enhance your degree of specialism and employability whilst providing an opportunity to experience real-time working in a cultural organisation.

Throughout this course you will explore and consider the tensions and challenges inherent in the bringing together of cultural activity and management practice, helping find ways to bring creative talent to a marketplace without impairing the creative process on the way.

The ability to spot opportunities and to be entrepreneurial are skills that the course seeks to nurture and develop at each level, to best equip you to enter the professional world of work – whether it be creating your own cultural enterprise or working with existing ones.

Assessment methods include written essays and reports, as well as presentations, ‘live briefs’ and project work. The final dissertation is a student led piece of work that provides the opportunity to establish yourself as an expert in the field you have selected to specialise in.

Although professional management practice is a major element of the programme, the 'creative arts event' is the starting point for all teaching.

A music pathway has been added to the MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy, which is run by the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths.

Instead of specialist theatre modules you take one 30 credit module from the MA Music or MMus programmes, and your dissertation/placement/business-plan will be directed towards musical organisations.

The MA introduces the key issues that concern the management of culture and in particular those within the performing arts.

Through both analysis of contemporary and recent practice, and practical work in a range of areas, you will develop a critical approach to the discipline.

Within a rapidly changing domestic and international environment, the work of arts and cultural managers is becoming more complex and significant. The creative industries are growing rapidly and patterns of cultural work are changing. Cultural organisations and festivals are in a period of fundamental, pervasive and long-term change; managers must deal with a host of dramatic, often contradictory demands and challenges. This leads to a situation where there is a need for graduates with more holistic and integrated perspectives regarding the management of cultural organisations and the political, economic, social and environmental conditions in which they function. This course has been developed in response to this need and is rooted in a belief that great leaders in the acknowledging that approaches may need to be adapted to meet the particularities of cultural organisations and festivals. Through encouraging you to become critically reflective, the course will develop your knowledge of the contemporary issues affecting the management of arts organisations and festivals while equipping you with the practical management skills that are essential for developing a career in the field. Mindful of the need for students to develop vocational skills, a number of assignments are orientated towards developing the knowledge and skills required to become an effective practitioner in the field. In addition, students are encouraged to arrange and undertake practical experience within cultural organisations to complement their studies.

This MA is designed as a conversion degree and we welcome applicants from non-business related subjects. It is suitable for both graduates who wish to add a vocational management emphasis to their first degree and those with equivalent professional qualifications or experience. It is likely to be of interest to those who studied the arts and humanities at undergraduate level or those with significant workplace experience who would like to gain a formal qualification in a flexible manner.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching comprises a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises, field trips and projects. You will also be required to arrange a period of industry based learning. Your performance on the course will be assessed by essays, reports, exams, presentations and a dissertation or project (MA only). Normally, there are around 30 to 35 students undertaking the course each year.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Most modules consist of two to three hours of class time each week of the semester. Where possible, all teaching takes place over two days per week. Your specific timetable will depend on whether you study full or part time. Flexible study options and a diverse curriculum mean that this course is suited to both those already working in the arts and those who are looking to start a career in the sector.

Links with industry/professional bodies

Part of our strength comes from our location; being based in Edinburgh means that the course has been developed over time in co-operation with key national cultural agencies and other bodies with a strategic interest in the development of arts organisations and festivals. Our location in the ‘festival city’ also allows for strong practical links between the course and the many arts, festival and cultural organisations based in and around Edinburgh, across Scotland and the UK.

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH

A 10-day campus abroad in a fourth country, in South America or Asia, will eventually be added if warranted by the number of students.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Your learning will be assessed by means of a combination of exams, team exercises, group projects, syntheses and/or participation in class. This last element is essential and will be an important component of your evaluation, as your professional and personal experience can greatly enrich the learning of your peers. Accordingly, you will be required to attend every class and to make the necessary personal arrangements to do so. At the beginning of each course, you will be informed of the type and conditions of evaluation (evaluation criteria, relative weight of the different elements of the evaluation).

Only the instructor may determine a student’s grade in a course. A student may not take a course on a Pass/Fail basis. A student’s grade-point average (“G.P.A.”) is computed by multiplying the term hours of each graded course taken by the grade points earned in the course and then dividing the total number of grade points by the total number of graded hours.

This exciting programme is specifically designed to help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of business and management and be able to implement this effectively across a wide range of complex business-based scenarios as well as in an international context.

You will engage in the advanced study of a diverse range of organisations and the rapidly changing environments in which they operate both nationally and internationally. COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The programme is offered in a modular format offering you the greatest choice in tailoring your final degree content to match your academic interest and future career development. You will take a mix of taught modules in the first two trimesters (120 credits) and complete a dissertation/research project (15,000–20,000 words) in the third trimester (60 credits). To achieve the MA you will need to complete 180 credits in total.

Trimester 3
In Trimester 3 you will work on your consultancy project or dissertation (60 credits). This is supported by a nominated supervisor. The teaching commences with a series of taught interventions designed to promote scholarly endeavour in the research context - resulting in the formulation of a clearly articulated research proposal outlining your research questions and the framing of the detailed work to be undertaken.

The consultancy project or dissertation gives you the opportunity to explain to yourself what you have learned about business and management and to demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge. Writing the consultancy project or dissertation provides you with a unique opportunity to consolidate the evidence you have assembled during the course and to subject it to rigorous academic analysis and practical application. As a guide the consultancy project or dissertation will be between 15,000 and 20,000 words.
