You have the opportunity to engage with a range of different musical styles, and to develop those practical and intellectual skills that can make you a better informed and more accomplished performer.

You receive significant amounts of one-to-one instrumental or vocal tuition from expert performers, and participate in yearly masterclasses with distinguished international performers and teachers.

You develop your individual specialist skills to a high technical and artistic standard, while also developing intellectual and team-working skills, and you have the opportunity to perform with a variety of departmental ensembles, including Goldsmiths’ Sinfonia.

The programme offers an extensive list of elective modules that encompass historical study and the latest performance-based technologies.

The pathway is particularly suitable for those hoping to develop a career as a professional solo or chamber musician, or to develop performance skills before entering teaching, or as preparation for PhD research in performance practice.

Theis distance learning course combines annual residential weeks in Sheffield with longer periods of internet-supported study which means students can be anywhere in the world. Traditional and world musics and their associated cultures are studied through practical methods such as fieldwork and direct participation in music-making as well as library research and theoretical interpretation. Students gain both a deeper knowledge of the music and a set of skills for discovering and communicating new knowledge about music. The courses are intended for musicians, educators and enthusiasts who want to know more about traditional and world musics and about ways of studying and understanding music in its social and cultural context.

The course shares various modules with the Traditional Music of the British Isles MA, while allowing students to specialise in an area of their choice. World Music Studies is interpreted quite literally as encompassing, in principle, the study of any and all musical activity in the world: Western as well as ‘exotic’, popular as well as classical, amateur as well as professional.

This course is the longest established masters in music psychology in the UK, and a collaboration with the Department of Psychology. Our tutors – Nikki Dibben, Stephanie Pitts, Vicki Rowe, Renee Timmers and Victoria Williamson – have been published widely in music psychology and education. This course allows you to use psychological methods and theory to interpret and understand musical behaviours, sounds and ideas. You will be introduced to a range of areas including music cognition and neuroscience, musical development, music in everyday life, and musical performance.

You may specialise within an area through a written dissertation, and the pursuit of original research, generally including experimental or observational empirical investigation. Students may also take cognitive neuroscience modules within the Department of Psychology.

In over 3 decades there has been a creative surge in hybrid live performance worldwide. This has been the work of solo artists, ensembles, auteurs and performer-directors across creative fields, who have redefined boundaries and stretched the artistic and social imagination into new spaces, both literally and figuratively.

Within the vibrant environment of Goldsmiths, and with all the stimulus that London offers culturally, practising or emerging practitioners develop compositional, critical, technical and management skills and strategies for forging independent and self-motivated careers. Our graduates work as practitioners, teachers and cultural leaders worldwide.

On the programme you will conceive, research, construct and deliver your ideas and articulate what motivates these. Teaching is rigorous and interdisciplinary. You study with distinguished international artists as well as scholars within a praxis ethos where theory informs creativity and vice versa. The emphasis throughout is on encouraging collaboration across disciplines and cultures, and on contextualising practice within its social, political and architectural environment.

Physical training, scenographic/environmental exploration and hands-on introduction to technologies (lighting, video and sound) support composition and artistic experimentation. You identify your own practice within the historical and contemporary field, and write critically and creatively. You archive your practice digitally, and on graduation will have developed a portfolio of projects. You are guided on professional development by the Live Art Development Agency (LADA) and the Institute for Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship (ICCE) at Goldsmiths.

Skills

You will become conversant, confident and skilled in a range of methodological practices as well as compositional strategies for independent theatrical, dance theatre and live art creation.

Your critical and analytical skills in interpreting artistic practice will be tested in a range of verbal, written and oral ways. Your study of your own body as a creative instrument will be complemented by learning the principles of scenography and film narrative.

You will research intellectually and produce theoretically informed writing. You will learn to contextualise your own practice and interests in the contemporary field of performance both in the UK and internationally, and to articulate such practice.

Overall you will learn how to research, construct and deliver your ideas performatively and how to advocate your own projects to producers, venues, funders and other agencies.

Programme Information

Transitions Dance Company has gained an international reputation for the technical excellence of its dancers and the originality of the work it performs. This programme will give you the opportunity to work with outstanding international choreographers, culminating in an international tour. In the past, choreographers have included Rui Horta, Liz Aggis, Della Davidson, Yolande Snaith, Lea Anderson, Mark Murphy, Jamie Watton, Jasmin Vardimon and Jan De Schynkel.

As a member of Transitions Dance Company, you will work within a professional company environment, taking daily advanced level classes in both contemporary dance and classical ballet. These will be supported by classes in fitness and somatic techniques. You will work with professional performers and dance educators, rehearse repertory pieces, and actively engage with professional choreographers in the creation of new works. The company tours nationally and internationally, giving you a professional performance experience in a diverse and challenging repertory.

Programme Content

This challenging experience will help you grow into a performer who will contribute effectively and creatively to the profession, not only as a practitioner but as an articulate advocate for performance and performance practice. By advancing your skills, you'll have the opportunity to formulate a deeper understanding of the technical and artistic complexities inherent in performance. You'll be encouraged to critically reflect on your development in the studio and in wider theoretical contexts.

Transitions is constantly evolving to reflect changes in the dance scene, ensuring alumni are quickly employed. Recent MAP graduates have performed with Lost Dog, Michael Clark Company, Ballet Boyz, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre amongst others, as well as making and performing in their own work.

Our programmes explore interdisciplinary elements of dance science, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning and somatics. They explore the scientific issues underlying dance performance, technical training, and dancer health and injury prevention, looking at ways to optimise the body's performance, improve training techniques and enhance performer potential.

Format

Our carefully devised programmes examine qualitative and quantitative aspects of dance practice through a range of scientific disciplines. Application of theory to dance practice is essential at Trinity Laban, and Dance Science is no exception. Sessions frequently take place in the dance studio or involve practical and hands-on experience with testing equipment in the lab.

Dance Science can be undertaken as an MSc (one year) or, in a programme new this year, as an MFA (two years), with the second year dedicated to research. NB: Participants on the MSc programme can transfer to the MFA programme subject to application, and this should be discussed with the Programme Leader before completion of the 4 taught modules.

Year One (MSc and MFA)

Our programmes explore interdisciplinary elements of dance science, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning and somatics. The second year of MFA Dance Science consists of the Extended Project module, and is characterised by self-directed research, experimentation, and reflection in the creation of a substantial and thoroughly researched piece of work. The MFA programme may only be taken full-time.

Year on year, graduates are successful at obtaining employment within the field as researchers, lecturers, consultants and dance science advocates, with several graduates now leading similar postgraduate programmes at other HE institutions.

The course focuses upon the relationship between technology and creative practice, training musical students to use software tools and enabling students with a solid music technology background to investigate creative opportunities. Initial intensive training in the knowledge and methods of the field at the start of the course is followed by opportunities for increasingly independent research and exploration.

We take a broad and inclusive view of the sonic arts; embracing anything from sound installations to free-improvised performances, computer programming through to fine art practice, art in which sound is the medium through to that in which sound plays a supporting role.

Traditional and world musics and their associated cultures are studied through practical methods such as fieldwork, direct participation in music-making as well as library research and theoretical interpretation. Students gain both a deeper knowledge of the music and a set of skills for discovering and communicating new knowledge about music. The course attracts students from across the world and is ideal for musicians, educators and enthusiasts who want to know more about traditional and world musics, and about ways of studying and understanding music in its social and cultural context.

This course will enable you to enhance your expertise in physical theatre through working with professional performers (this year from the Jasmin Vardimon Company) within the university context.

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to participate in independent and group-based practical projects, and to experientially and critically explore the methodological, historical and theoretical parameters of physical theatre. You will have the opportunity to produce solo and small group performances with an emphasis on integrating dance and theatre practice.

This is a stand alone continuing professional development course. On successful completion, suitably qualified students may apply to undertake two further modules from the MA Theatre (Physical Theatre and Performance) to complete a Master’s degree.

Course content and structure

The course will consist of eight intensive weekend workshops and a full-time week in June and will cover the following:
- the practice of physical theatre in relation to the techniques utilised by a chosen performance company
- practical methods and skills of creating physical theatre work as a creator, a performer or a creative viewer
- how to move into a new area of work, namely dance theatre, by introducing new techniques that combine vocal, kinaesthetic and visual skills and responses.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- developed insight into the practice of a chosen physical theatre company

- understood how a performer might use dance and voice skills to develop an independent creative response

- participated in research into new ways of creating physical dance theatre work

- evaluated and reflected on dance theatre performance and practice

- worked with video, set or props to understand how visual language can bring another dimension to dance theatre work.

Assessment

Assessment is primarily through practice, including a short solo piece and a longer final group project (70%). Constructive critical reflection and analysis of each practical project will be examined through a short viva for the solo and a written portfolio and performance critique for the final project (3,000 – 3,500 words).

Employability & career opportunities

This taught postgraduate certificate is designed as a stand alone qualification to enhance professional level performance skills and is the equivalent of the two practical modules in the MA Theatre (Physical Theatre and Performance). Suitably qualified candidates may apply to continue their studies by undertaking the two other modules on the MA.

Core Modules

Performance Matters 1
At a weekly evening seminar, address the issues of what we know, what we should know and how we can learn more about performance. You'll look at performance research, developing different writing registers, epistemic and expert practices, and consider what really matters in performance.

Performance Matters 2
Examine specific research areas proposed by yourself and your course mates,leading to the creation and presentation of a conference paper or presentation in a professional context.

Artist Project Major
Undertake a project in a specific area of performance, such as dance, theatre, live art, or stand up comedy. You will work under the supervision of one or more members of our performing arts staff who will arrange regular observation of your work throughout the rehearsal/making/conceptual process.

Artist Project Minor
Immerse yourself in a project which will result in the creation of one or a series of new performance works. You will have the option to work independently or collaboratively.

Option Modules

The Festival Project
Visit a national or international performance festival with and take the opportunity to collaborate in talk-back sessions with artists, directors, critics and academics. You will submit a written report on your experience.

Embodied Knowledges
We will lead you through a series of classes in voice and body-based training including Feldenkrais, Yoga, Tai Chi, Clean Language, Kalaripyatthu, Hart and Polyphonic singing.

The Artist Mentor
Develop your artistic practice under the mentorship and guidance of an established professional artist who operates in your area of interest. You will be encouraged to critically reflect on your work and identify areas where you can enhance your skills.

Choreographing in Wider Contexts
Explore contemporary global choreographic practices. We will provide you with the space to reconsider and develop your own making practices as a process of choreographing performance.

The Placement Project
Gain hands-on experience with a placement opportunity linked to your career aspirations.
