In over 3 decades there has been a creative surge in hybrid live performance worldwide. This has been the work of solo artists, ensembles, auteurs and performer-directors across creative fields, who have redefined boundaries and stretched the artistic and social imagination into new spaces, both literally and figuratively.

Within the vibrant environment of Goldsmiths, and with all the stimulus that London offers culturally, practising or emerging practitioners develop compositional, critical, technical and management skills and strategies for forging independent and self-motivated careers. Our graduates work as practitioners, teachers and cultural leaders worldwide.

On the programme you will conceive, research, construct and deliver your ideas and articulate what motivates these. Teaching is rigorous and interdisciplinary. You study with distinguished international artists as well as scholars within a praxis ethos where theory informs creativity and vice versa. The emphasis throughout is on encouraging collaboration across disciplines and cultures, and on contextualising practice within its social, political and architectural environment.

Physical training, scenographic/environmental exploration and hands-on introduction to technologies (lighting, video and sound) support composition and artistic experimentation. You identify your own practice within the historical and contemporary field, and write critically and creatively. You archive your practice digitally, and on graduation will have developed a portfolio of projects. You are guided on professional development by the Live Art Development Agency (LADA) and the Institute for Cultural and Creative Entrepreneurship (ICCE) at Goldsmiths.

Skills

You will become conversant, confident and skilled in a range of methodological practices as well as compositional strategies for independent theatrical, dance theatre and live art creation.

Your critical and analytical skills in interpreting artistic practice will be tested in a range of verbal, written and oral ways. Your study of your own body as a creative instrument will be complemented by learning the principles of scenography and film narrative.

You will research intellectually and produce theoretically informed writing. You will learn to contextualise your own practice and interests in the contemporary field of performance both in the UK and internationally, and to articulate such practice.

Overall you will learn how to research, construct and deliver your ideas performatively and how to advocate your own projects to producers, venues, funders and other agencies.

The School of Arts offers a Masters programme in performance creation that draws upon the vast resources of London and the facilities and expertise of Brunel. This innovative MA will provide you with the space to nurture your creativity through the practical and critical exploration of contemporary multi-media performance. The programme offers a combination of critical engagement and practice-based research.

The aim of the programme is to provide a bridge between academia and the professional world, giving you the opportunities to network and engage in a variety of supervised and self-managed projects.

You will undertake a programme of study under the auspices of Drama at Brunel, which is well known for its innovative approach to contemporary performance study and practice. The learning environment encourages independent thought, creativity and craftsmanship through workshops, seminars, lectures, self-directed exercises, tutorials and practical master classes. Many of Brunel’s lecturers and guest artists have international reputations in performance and direction including Helen Paris (acclaimed performance artist and director of curious performance company) and Fiona Templeton (playwright, author and theatre company founder).

We offer specialisation in directing, solo performance and performance writing and there are opportunities for professional work placements/apprenticeships that allow you to develop your own project work under professional circumstances. Students benefit from opportunities to showcase their final pieces – including solo performances and directed projects – in professional venues such as Battersea Arts Centre. These performances help to launch their entry into the professional arena.

Brunel’s proximity to the diverse performance and theatre environment of London allows for direct contact with the work of established as well as cutting edge professionals working in the industry. The programme offers you the opportunity to develop skills, increase employment possibilities and build up a network of professional contacts.

Programme Content
The MA programme has a flexible modular structure designed to accommodate both full time (30-40 study hours per week) and part-time students (15-20 study hours per week). All students will undertake four core modules and a practical project or, if preferred, a written dissertation.

Modules
The modules available are likely to include:
·Specialist options
This module runs in term one as a practical workshop and rehearsal. Students will normally elect one of three specialist perspectives - Performance Directing, Solo Performance or Performance Writing. However, students could choose to explore more than one option, but will be required to choose one option only for their final Performance Project or Written Dissertation. Students will produce two practical pieces (10-15 minutes duration, one focusing on the performer and one on mise-en-scene) together with documentation of their work.
·Approaches to Performance/Mise-en-scene Making
This module addresses the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary performance. It will give close attention to the multiplicity and diversity of approaches to performance making used over the last 100 years at an advanced level.
·Professional Placement
This module runs in the second term. In the first five-six weeks of the module students will attend lectures and workshops on professional development with staff and guest lectures/leading experts in the field. In the second part of the module, students will undertake a placement/apprenticeship (minimum three weeks/90 hours) with an established partner organisation, such as a national or international theatre company, festival organisation, or university with whom we will sign a Learning Contract. We have MA students on placements in London, the US, Canada, Romania and France.
·Research Methodologies
The aim of the module is to enhance the development of independent student thought and an understanding of interdisciplinary research methodologies in performance studies. This will be achieved through an engagement with abstract concepts and group discussions of advanced ideas and current trends in performance. In this way students will be encouraged to discuss and analyse their own and other’s approaches. This will also serve as a platform for students to test their ideas and present a series of short papers on selected topics.
·Performance Project/Dissertation
During the summer term you will work towards your practical performance project or, if preferred, dissertation. The performance project will take the form of a final presentation-performance (lasting approximately 50 minutes and including documentation with visual material and a written commentary) either in directing, performance writing or solo-performance. In the first part of term two there will be a set of intensive workshops where students will be working within their chosen specialist area with guest artists.

There are 2 x £1,500 bursaries/scholarships available for the next 2 years

Your application for a scholarship will be judged on your your written sample and your Statement of Need. If you do not have an appropriate written sample please answer the following question in 1,500 words "How do you see contemporary performance?".

You will be put forward for a scholarship once you have paid your deposit.

As a professional masters’ programme, our MFA offers you an unparalleled opportunity to become an established theatre maker right at the heart of one of the world’s most popular cities. You will work with our specialist academics - many of who are already established performing artists – in high-quality theatres both in San Francisco and the UK, with some opportunities to work in other parts of Europe. Our aim is to develop you and your talents through intensive mentoring and a wide-range of showcasing opportunities. Our programme explores innovative devising techniques which places you at the centre of the contemporary art in San Francisco’s Bay Area, and gives you a platform to perform to large audiences throughout the 22-month course.

Format and assessment

- Study -

- There will be four intensive residencies taught by Chichester faculty, with direct support from SF staff and professional mentors). Three of these are delivered in San Francisco, while one is taught on exchange in Chichester.
- The programme also includes weekly distance-learning (video conferencing) classes, taught by Chichester Faculty alongside UK MA students.
- There will also be weekly workshop classes and critical sharing, led by San Francisco-based faculty.
In addition to taught classes, students learn through residencies at our professional partner organisations and through peer-driven sharing-sessions and making sessions.

- Performance -

- You will have extensive opportunities to showcase their work in San Francisco and in the UK. Working closely with our professional partners: Z Space and CounterPULSE in San Francisco, you will be able to showcase your work within the vibrant Bay Area performance community.
- A five-week exchange trip to the UK will also allow you to perform in Chichester and, potentially, over parts of the UK and Europe.
- You will be mentored by leading Bay Area artists. A final professional/community project will allow you to launch your practice in a defined and energized manner.

This MFA will be run jointly by performance artists and lecturers from both the University of Chichester’s Department of Theatre and the California Institute of Integral Studies’ Department of Writing, Consciousness and Creative Inquiry. As a Department we have been working in San Francisco for several years and feel, with your help, we can make a crucial contribution to one of the United States’ biggest theatre-making communities. The MFA will provide you with an unparalleled opportunity to make high-quality theatre work and establish or refine their creative and professional identity.

Work placements

We invite you to join us for performances, workshops, and symposia across San Francisco and, furthermore, a chance to participate in a five-week exchange programme at leading theatres and festivals in the UK – including the Edinburgh Fringe. Here you will work with our London-based creative partners Forest Fringe to create bold new work for experimental performances in San Francisco.

Our goal is to create - with your help - an international community of performance artists committed to breaking down old hierarchies and create flexible artwork, applicable to anyone and everyone. We will also encourage you to build the appetite for experimental shows in San Francisco and seize upon other opportunities to perform in the UK and other leading locations.

Facilities

Our programme is run in the famed San Francisco Bay Area, because Theatre at Chichester has made considerable commitment to working across cultures and in contexts that allow cultural exchanges. However, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn and work at Chichester and, during the last two years, we have developed our campuses. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

The refurbishments include a purpose-built Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance. We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus. There are also several dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre, and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Our new award-winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus, and we offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. Also situated in our LRC is Costa Coffee and nearly 100 open-access work stations. An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

The MA Making Performance is an exciting opportunity to discuss, explore and create performance in high standard professional facilities. The course examines practice as research, the development of creative projects, the creation of major work and the ways in which evaluation and analysis of performance can be undertaken.

The programme is ideal for graduates, teachers, professional and semi-professional artists and individuals with suitable levels of performance experience and academic skill.

What will I study?

You will study how performance can examine ideas and advance understanding whilst considering examples of contemporary performance and the major critical ideas and perspectives. You will have the chance to develop a chosen performance skill, and stage a major piece of work. The programme will be organised around the sharing of ideas and practice, and collaborative approaches.

The course comprises five modules. Three 20 credit modules are studied in the spring term. These are in the area of practice as research, an examination of contemporary performance through the development of a creative proposal, and development of a performance and practice portfolio. In the summer (May to September) you will use the departmental facilities for the development and presentation of a major piece of performance. This fourth module is followed in the autumn by a final module which is a dissertation analysing the summer practice project.

How will I study?

The course starts with seminars, workshops and master classes in the spring with a weekly performance laboratory where peer led experimentation and performance development is encouraged. In the summer you will move onto intensive rehearsal and performance development supported with tutorials. In the autumn the focus is upon one- to-one tutorials for the development of the dissertation. The whole programme is designed around a series of practitioner seminars where you are encouraged to discuss and share your approaches and ideas on performance.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through essay writing, creation of performance, and oral examination. You will also be encouraged to consider ways of presenting academic argument and analysis through media suitable for performance analysis including video, drawing and live events.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by staff in the department in the area of their professional or research expertise. The programme is also designed to include master classes and lectures from a wide range of professional artists.

What are my career prospects?

Performance Matters 1
At a weekly evening seminar, address the issues of what we know, what we should know and how we can learn more about performance. You'll look at performance research, developing different writing registers, epistemic and expert practices, and consider what really matters in performance.

Performance Matters 2
Examine specific research areas proposed by yourself and your course mates,leading to the creation and presentation of a conference paper or presentation in a professional context.

Artist Project Major
Undertake a project in a specific area of performance, such as dance, theatre, live art, or stand up comedy. You will work under the supervision of one or more members of our performing arts staff who will arrange regular observation of your work throughout the rehearsal/making/conceptual process.

Artist Project Minor
Immerse yourself in a project which will result in the creation of one or a series of new performance works. You will have the option to work independently or collaboratively.

Option Modules

The Festival Project
Visit a national or international performance festival with and take the opportunity to collaborate in talk-back sessions with artists, directors, critics and academics. You will submit a written report on your experience.

Embodied Knowledges
We will lead you through a series of classes in voice and body-based training including Feldenkrais, Yoga, Tai Chi, Clean Language, Kalaripyatthu, Hart and Polyphonic singing.

The Artist Mentor
Develop your artistic practice under the mentorship and guidance of an established professional artist who operates in your area of interest. You will be encouraged to critically reflect on your work and identify areas where you can enhance your skills.

Choreographing in Wider Contexts
Explore contemporary global choreographic practices. We will provide you with the space to reconsider and develop your own making practices as a process of choreographing performance.

The Placement Project
Gain hands-on experience with a placement opportunity linked to your career aspirations. Shaped around a series of thematic investigations of the city’s unparalleled theatrical and cultural resources, you will be able to pursue a range of projects matched to your professional aspirations.

The programme engages with three basic approaches to study: viewing, making and writing, with students given the freedom to interpret key assessment tasks in line with their developing research and professional interests.

This is a flexible MA with full-time and part-time attendance options and which provides a sound practical and theoretical basis from which to move on to professional practice and training or further study at MPhil/PhD level.

You will join a welcoming and diverse postgraduate community in a well-established UK department of drama, theatre and performance which offers a range of opportunities to work on staff and student-led projects in addition to your own studies.

Content

'Viewing' is at the heart of the programme, with regular collective attendance at a curated programme of events in London, during the Autumn and Spring terms, selected by the tutor team and provided without charge to students. Making connections between these events, you will explore a range of themes, genres and contexts that shape the performing arts in the city. This experience is supported by a programme of guided reading and discussion-based seminar sessions.

'Making' and 'Writing' are the strands of the programme where you develop your own responses to these themed investigations, which act as the springboard for your own projects. You will have the freedom to choose from a variety of formats for your assessed work, which might include live performance, theatre criticism, photographic, video or sound-based work. You can choose to explore a variety of formats and approaches or focus your work on a particular type of practice. In the first term, you will be introduced to a range of creative and analytical research methods that are designed to support the development of your own interests, leading on to a proposal for a major project that you undertake during the second half of the year. 'Writing' offers a pathway for students to explore forms of textual practice, including writing for performance, theatre criticism, performative writing, dramaturgical research and response. This approach also offers the possibility of developing new kinds of conversations between audiences, artists, producers and other constituencies in the performance cultures of the city.

This new programme, starting in 2013, combines diverse approaches to making and documenting performance. It draws on devising, physical theatre, directing, choreography, solo work and live art. The course is intended for graduate reflective performance practitioners to enhance knowledge and experience of a range of processes and forms in the areas of collaboration, composition, performance, directing and documentation. Practical sessions will include extensive contact with innovative performance practitioners, sharing a range of models of practice. You will be assessed on creative and critical responses to course content, and these could take diverse forms. The course addresses the centrality of different approaches to contexts in the world of work through the development of a portfolio of skills and increased capacities in documentation, as part of a means of self-representation for professional practice.

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to participate in independent and group-based practical projects, and to explore critically the methods, history and theory of theatre studies. While developing your projects, you will also benefit from access to a range of distinctive performance spaces on the campus.

All students complete an independently researched dissertation, which allows them to further develop their own areas of specialist interest.

Many research staff in the Department are highly respected as theatre makers and for their practice-based research. Workshops and lectures are regularly offered to postgraduates by leading playwrights, directors, choreographers and practitioners, including Katie Mitchell, Rebecca Prichard and Jonathan Burrows.

Course content and structure

You will study three core course units and complete a dissertation. This is a new course for 2013 designed to respond to the growing interest in how performance practices inform and interweave with each other. The details of the course form are undergoing validation and will be placed on the departmental website as soon as available.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- enhanced and applied their skills as reflective theatre practitioners
- explored the scope of theatre studies and its critical and research methodologies
- developed their understanding of contemporary performance practices and its contexts
- experienced a range of ways of documenting practice to best represent their artistic concerns and focus
- developed their ability to undertake independent research and analysis.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of means including essays and performance analyses, practical projects as well as a final dissertation of 10-14,000 words. Practical projects are sometimes carried out in a group and may include an element of assessment for an individual's contribution to group working and direction. All students undertake a summer term practical project.

Our graduates are highly employable and, in recent years, have entered many different drama and theatre related areas, including careers in professional theatre, training and education. This course also equips you with a solid foundation for continued PhD studies and many of our students go on to advanced research.

This course brings together artists, directors, writers, researchers and designers to set the agendas that will drive performance practice in the 21st century. Graduates go on to professional practice, working as influential directors, writers and producers in theatre, TV, film, opera or dance, or progress to research degree study.

Content

MA Performance Design and Practice responds to and engages with tradition and change in the arena of contemporary performance and experimental theatre practice. The postgraduate course contributes to the debates surrounding the core territories of performance making, design and time-based practices.

MA Performance Design and Practice also acknowledges the hybrid nature of contemporary performance work and promotes a critical exploration of conventional fixed boundaries between fine art performance and theatre.

Central to the MA Performance Design and Practice ethos is a recognition of international models of performance design and practice - models that have shaped the debates challenging many of the established definitions, functions and roles identified with performance making. From these debates key practitioners, organisations, events and texts have emerged. It remains a core aspect of the postgraduate course ethos to give you direct experience of these models and materials through an inspirational learning placement outside the UK.

Focusing on the sphere of performance culture where ideas and orthodoxies are in flux, the postgraduate programme brings together fine artists, directors, writers, researchers and designers to set the agendas that will drive performance practice in the 21st century.

Structure

MA Performance Design and Practice lasts 60 weeks structured as two consecutive periods of 30 weeks each, (ie, two academic years) in its 'extended full time mode.'

MA Performance Design and Practice is credit rated at 180 credits, and comprises 3 units:

Unit 1, (40 credits) and Unit 2, (20 credits) run concurrently and last 15 weeks.
Unit 3 (120 credits) follows after the completion of Units 1 and 2 and runs for 45 weeks.

Students successfully achieving Units 1 and 2 may exit at this point with the award of Postgraduate Certificate.

All three units must be passed in order to achieve the MA but the classification of the award of MA is derived from the mark for unit 3 only.

The course aims to foster creative and performance skills, theoretical knowledge and research skills appropriate to contemporary performance practices, and is designed for those wishing to develop themselves as independent artists, practitioner researchers, scholarly researchers and reflective practitioners. It is also suitable for professional artists and educators who wish to reinvigorate their practices and deepen their engagement in performance-making.

You will study topics including the body in performance; audiences; spaces; narrative; memory; digital technologies and collaboration; and these are addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective. You may also gain real life experience through a range of opportunities offered by the industry through our links with local and national organisations.

You will learn through a range of classroom and studio based activities, with assessments including written assignments, group and individual presentations, viva voces and practice based work. Teaching and learning will take place in studios and performance spaces, including the Performance Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE) Building, housing state-of-the-art, dedicated and flexible teaching spaces as well as a social area. Studio space, edit suites, mini dv/sd card cameras and other technical items can be booked. You will have access to an extensive stock of specialist books, videos, electronic resources and facilities housed in the Kimberlin Library.

The programme offers some flexibility in module choice, so that you may broaden existing skills and/or develop new skills that complement your programme specific studies. Assessment

Assessment is primarily performance based, in addition you must submit a portfolio of work, which will include a written diary/report to demonstrate your research inquiry, plan, video documentation of and ability to analyse your performance processes.

For your assessment you will also produce an individual performance show-reel in a specified genre (i.e. interview, acting or presenting) and a screen-based final project that will culminate your acquired performance skills from the course. The latter will be accompanied by a contextual study, which will document your research-based insights.

At all stages you will receive detailed relevant feedback on your work, both as an individual and on the role you perform within the group, which enables you to incorporate the elements of this into your work as you progress through their course. This is crucial to your academic and professional progression. Individual lecturers offer the opportunity to discuss any feedback in more detail.

Course Content:
This programme is designed to be extremely flexible, reflecting the diversity of approaches to making artwork. It can be studied full-time or part-time. Students are expected to develop two parallel projects: a work-in-progress piece informed by an extensive critical agenda and a major performance event. These projects are underpinned by extensive (written) critical study and the development of a ‘professional (business) portfolio’ that helps define the nature and purpose of the creative projects in an external context.

“Groups" and “Individuals"
A key feature of the programme is the ‘Theatre Collective’ strand: we welcome block-applications from groups of artists, who are keen to develop their creative identity as part of a shared collective. Individuals are, of course, welcome, either as solo performers or as individuals looking to share practice in new contexts.

Chichester: Working Environment
Students will be entering into one of the most vibrant and connected environments and communities for making contemporary theatre and performance. The Department of Theatre at Chichester has an established reputation for working with a wide range of established performance artists who recognise the opportunities of creative research and development within an applied university context. Much of the work developed by students Department is presented in our ShowRoom Theatre, a key venue in the national touring network, with a reputation for programming innovative and radical work, but we also have firm links with venues and festivals in Brighton, London, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Our Facilities
During the last two years we have considerable refurbishments to both our Chichester and Bognor Regis campuses. These renovations include a purpose-built Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance. We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus. There are also several dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre, and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Our new award-winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus, and we offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. Also situated in our LRC is Costa Coffee and nearly 100 open-access work stations. An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

You will be encouraged to think about your own future within theatre along with the help of our academic lecturers, many of who are professional artists with links to hundreds of theatres across the UK. Your own new work will be stimulated by a continuous programme of professional performances from a wide range of international artists, many of whom support the work of the department through teaching and mentoring.

Work Placements
Every year we offer students the chance to work with the technical, marketing, or outreach departments of our local theatres in art centres and other venues, theatre companies, independent producers, schools/colleges and various other related contexts. These programmes are designed to help get your foot on the ladder on graduating within an established organisation or professional context.

Indicative modules:
This programme constitutes 180 Credits and is broken into five compulsory modules:

Taking the dramatic text as a critical starting point, our course encompasses drama from the early modern period to the contemporary.
In the rehearsal room, you will create new theatre and performance work responding to set texts and themes. You will also engage with performance techniques to develop your skills as a playwright, director and dramaturg.
In academic lectures and seminars, you will encounter theoretical, historical, critical and philosophical writings. You will theorise live performance and write about the ways in which new performance work is informed by both contemporary concerns and older theatrical traditions and legacies.
In the final dissertation project, you will exercise your own creative voice as a director, dramaturg, playwright or scholar.

We also offer informal, unassessed creative enhancement opportunities: RADA’s TheatreVision initiative, which brings together students from the MA Text and Performance and the MA Theatre Lab to explore writing for theatre; Birkbeck’s Centre for Contemporary Theatre runs a postgraduate reading group and offers opportunities to show work in progress as part of the School of Arts summer festival Arts Week.
RADA and Birkbeck are just 3 minutes' walk apart so you will study in a campus-style environment. Our close proximity also allows us to draw on the rich range of resources available across both institutions, including: studio space; technical support for group and individual presentations; RADA’s excellent library of playtexts and theatre and performance literature; and Birkbeck’s world-class research resources in the arts and humanities.
