Assessment

Assessment is primarily performance based, in addition you must submit a portfolio of work, which will include a written diary/report to demonstrate your research inquiry, plan, video documentation of and ability to analyse your performance processes.

For your assessment you will also produce an individual performance show-reel in a specified genre (i.e. interview, acting or presenting) and a screen-based final project that will culminate your acquired performance skills from the course. The latter will be accompanied by a contextual study, which will document your research-based insights.

At all stages you will receive detailed relevant feedback on your work, both as an individual and on the role you perform within the group, which enables you to incorporate the elements of this into your work as you progress through their course. This is crucial to your academic and professional progression. Individual lecturers offer the opportunity to discuss any feedback in more detail.

Studying at the IoPPN, this course provides the opportunity to learn about psychiatric research from academics and clinicians working in the leading centre for mental health research in Europe.

Our optional, clinical placements provide opportunity to gain experience of working within clinical teams under expert supervision. Placements are provided through our close relationship with South London and the Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust, which provides the widest range of mental health services in the UK. The MSc in Psychiatric Research develops knowledge and practical skills in cutting-edge research into the biological (eg brain neurotransmission, genetics), and environmental underpinnings (eg stress, drug use) of psychiatric disorders and on how this research can be applied to develop new therapeutic interventions (eg pharmacological and psychological interventions) through translation to clinical practice.

Students will learn about a comprehensive range of research methodologies, including epidemiological and cohort studies, clinical trials, neuroimaging and genetics. Rigorous training in statistical skills and theoretical knowledge is provided which is necessary for performing, interpreting and applying research.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, practical sessions, workshops and small group tutorials. The relatively small size of this MSc facilitates student participation, interactive learning, group work and personalised support. Our assessments are designed to support learning as well as the development of transferrable skills, such as academic writing and presentation. Assessments include exams, written coursework and oral presentation. These involve data analysis and interpretation, and writing information for patients, grants proposals and scientific articles for publication in academic journals.

Due to the emphasis on developing high-calibre academic skills, the MSc in Psychiatric Research is particularly well suited for students who wish to pursue a research PhD or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. You will work with our specialist academics - many of who are already established performing artists – in high-quality theatres both in San Francisco and the UK, with some opportunities to work in other parts of Europe. Our aim is to develop you and your talents through intensive mentoring and a wide-range of showcasing opportunities. Our programme explores innovative devising techniques which places you at the centre of the contemporary art in San Francisco’s Bay Area, and gives you a platform to perform to large audiences throughout the 22-month course.

Format and assessment

- Study -

- There will be four intensive residencies taught by Chichester faculty, with direct support from SF staff and professional mentors). Three of these are delivered in San Francisco, while one is taught on exchange in Chichester.
- The programme also includes weekly distance-learning (video conferencing) classes, taught by Chichester Faculty alongside UK MA students.
- There will also be weekly workshop classes and critical sharing, led by San Francisco-based faculty.
In addition to taught classes, students learn through residencies at our professional partner organisations and through peer-driven sharing-sessions and making sessions.

- Performance -

- You will have extensive opportunities to showcase their work in San Francisco and in the UK. Working closely with our professional partners: Z Space and CounterPULSE in San Francisco, you will be able to showcase your work within the vibrant Bay Area performance community.

Our programme is run in the famed San Francisco Bay Area, because Theatre at Chichester has made considerable commitment to working across cultures and in contexts that allow cultural exchanges. However, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn and work at Chichester and, during the last two years, we have developed our campuses. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

The refurbishments include a purpose-built Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance. We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus. There are also several dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre, and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Our new award-winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus, and we offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. Pathologists’ Assistants (PAs) are “physician extenders” for anatomic pathologists. PAs perform delegated medical tasks under the supervision of a medically qualified pathologist. They perform initial examination, dissection, and gross description of surgically removed tissues, assist in dissection of bodies during autopsies, and perform intraoperative frozen sections. They possess highly standardized skills related to each of these procedures which allow pathologists to spend more of their time looking at slides.

The Master of Pathologists' Assistant (MDPA) program is a two year continuous course-based masters program that will include both in class work along side practicum components.

All students are considered full-time. Part-time status may be considered and must be approved by the Graduate Program Director.

History

The University of Calgary has launched a new Pathologists' Assistant (PA) M.Sc. training program as a specialization within the Medical Sciences Graduate Program starting July 2012. In 2015 the Master of Pathologists' Assistant program was fully approved through the University of Calgary and Alberta Government to start taking students in September 2016.

Career Prospects

After graduation, students are eligible to sit the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) PA board-certification examination.

This challenging programme will allow you to expand your repertoire and hone your skills as a performer, while giving you the confidence to apply critical approaches to the study of music and its performance.

You’ll work with our experienced and talented specialist teachers to develop your repertoire. You’ll learn to interpret music sensitively, injecting your own personality without neglecting the historical style of each work. Not only will you perform regularly throughout the year, but you’ll work towards your own recitals and work on your own solo or ensemble project.

To put your performance into context, you’ll also have a choice of optional modules offered across the School of Music. You could study composition, musicology, aesthetics, psychology of music and more to explore how performance can shape and be shaped by other forms of musical research and practice.

We have a variety of excellent facilities to support your learning, including rehearsal, performance and practice spaces, a lab for studying the psychology of music and studios for sound recording, software development and computer music composition. We also have good working relationships with a range of prestigious arts organisations: we host BBC Radio 3 concerts, Leeds Lieder and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, as well as enjoying a close partnership with Opera North and many others in a city with a thriving music and cultural scene.

You could also choose to study for a Postgraduate Diploma qualification over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time.

Course content

Core modules that run throughout the year will allow you to develop your performance skills in different contexts. Supported by instrumental or vocal lessons with a specialist teacher, you’ll take part in regular performance classes to develop your repertoire.

As well as focusing on a single concerto, song-cycle or extended work of 20-30 minutes, you’ll prepare for a final recital of 40-50 minutes that you’ll perform near the end of the programme. In addition, you’ll prepare for a solo or ensemble project and reflect on the process of preparing and then giving a performance.

You’ll also have the chance to expand your studies. The core Professional Studies module will build your understanding of research methods in music to equip you with a broader range of skills. Then you’ll choose from the optional modules offered across the School of Music, allowing you to explore musicology, composition, psychology of music, aesthetics and more.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

If you opt for the PGDip qualification, you’ll take fewer modules overall.

You’ll take instrumental and vocal lessons with our specialist teachers. However, lessons can be organised with teachers from the surrounding area such as Opera North and the Royal Northern College of Music by individual arrangement.

Assessment

Your performance will largely be assessed through your recitals, and you’ll also submit programme notes for each recital you complete. Other modules may also assess you on project work, bibliographical exercises, essays and presentations. Optional modules may use specialist tasks such as compositions or critical editions.

This programme will explore the key debates in national and international education policy. You will engage with a critical analysis of the different concepts underlying the evolving landscape of educational policy globally, such as new forms of funding and delivery, privatisation, evaluation and inspection.

Students will examine key education policies in the UK and other countries, with a particular focus on social justice, and consider the possibilities for more socially fair and democratic policy enactments. You will also explore a range of identities including, but not limited to, social class, gender and ‘race’/ethnicity, and how these aspects of identity shape the policy formation and enactment process in the UK and internationally.

This course has a particular focus on social justice within education, and allows participants to reflect on the varied and linked aspects of education in a contemporary domestic, and globalised, world. You will benefit from our relationships with international organisations and contacts such as UNESCO, which open up educational study and employment opportunities.

While providing an introduction to the key theories and concepts in the fields of education policy and social justice, this course will offer students an understanding of the established techniques of research and enquiry, and how these are used to create and interpret knowledge. With these skills, you will be well placed to be able to critically evaluate research and advanced scholarship, in order to understand the basis of educational policy nationally and internationally. 

You will develop the confidence and knowledge to become a professional practitioner, researcher or developer in the field of education policy. With the necessary skills and understanding for reflecting on your own and others’ practice, you will be able contribute to improving educational processes and outcomes. As such, the course is well-suited to current teachers and school leaders, professionals working in policy related areas, and national and international recent graduates.

Content

Students will undertake a study of the recent history of Education policy, studying the key parliamentary acts from 1988 to the present time. Students will evaluate these policies in relation to social justice, looking critically at how inclusive or exclusive they have been, and from there consider the possibilities for more socially just policy enactment. Other modules will broaden this understanding, as students investigate global theoretical perspectives on education policy, and the different models and policy schemes in use, and the outcomes and implications of these policy choices in different contexts. Further, students will explore how discourses on teaching vary over time and across national contexts, and analyse the effects of education policies on the teaching profession, including looking at teachers’ contribution to social change.

Students can also explore the way in which policy is enacted and governance undertaken across the world. Particular modules will look at the new actors (philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, edu-businesses, community organisations, etc.) that have served as the driving force for recent political change, and study four conceptual principles underlying the concept of ‘network governance’.

Other modules will focus on developing your critical perspective on the political nature of education as well as offering chances to engage with new methods and tools to perform policy analysis. Especially, you will strengthen your ability to undertake and evaluate research, and you will be able to study a variety of theoretical concepts underlying social and educational research, carrying out a research project of your own.

This is a unique professional course that has been designed specifically for overseas students. MA Acting (International) offers the full spectrum of acting skills, including voice, movement and singing and approaches to rehearsal and public performances. The course focuses on advanced practical acting skills and also takes in the study of Shakespeare and other classical traditions.

Example structure

We offer dynamic and unique course for actors, directors, technical theatre specialists and students of theatre practice. Training at East 15 draws upon 50 years of tradition combined with a keen sense of the world of stage and screen today.

First Term
The first term includes the module Acting Technique based on the Stanislavsky approach, which addresses the key physical and vocal skills for acting, enabling students who are coming from a variety of training traditions to identify and achieve the required level of preparation for the subsequent modules.

It also allows tutors to make a diagnostic assessment of your skills and potential, and identify and implement any additional work in these core areas.

The module on Shakespeare enables you to develop your understanding of the meaning and mechanics of Shakespeare’s text. It introduces you to specific vocal techniques for the performance of Renaissance text and allow you to consider how a range of archaic and contemporary performance settings influence the actor’s and director’s approaches to Shakespeare in performance.

In addition, you study a range of analytical and experimental approaches to script that are useful to the actor and there are opportunities to develop your clarity, accuracy, and expressiveness in speaking Renaissance text. The Shakespeare module normally includes a two-week workshop at Shakespeare’s Globe, where you have an opportunity to perform on the Globe stage.

Second Term
The second term includes the Character and Scene Study module which extends the work begun in Acting Technique. It uses a Realist approach to acting as its base, allowing you to pursue longer and more challenging acting explorations. Scene work is undertaken on scripts by, for example, Ibsen, Strindberg, and Realist texts from the last 50 years. The module extends and applies Realist acting techniques, and includes a study of theories and assumptions underlying Realism.

A module on Contemporary UK Texts introduces you to key contemporary texts from the UK theatre, and to scripts from the twentieth-century that continue to have a place in and to influence contemporary UK theatre. It allows you to extend your vocal, physical, and analytical skills in the creation of roles that reflect a current cultural context and offers an opportunity to create and perform a complete role in the context of a fully staged play.

Third Term
You work on a written dissertation or a practical project. The year usually culminates in a full length production in a London venue.

COURSE DETAILS

Learn how to:

  • Conduct and communicate legal analysis with confidence and accuracy in relation to any aspect of mainstream professional construction practice

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course is studied part-time by distance learning.  Admission onto the course is in September.

The Masters award consists of four core modules.  The PgDip requires the completion of all four core modules.  The PgCert requires completion of two core taught modules.  All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed entirely through coursework.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY

A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first sixteen months.  Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.  Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.  In the final two semesters you undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits which is also delivered online and incorporates extensive tutor engagement and support.

TEACHING

To help you fit your studies around your work, the course is taught via distance learning. This takes the form of an online learning environment supplemented by constant support from experienced tutors.

During your studies, you’ll log on for weekly online tutorials, which will be led by tutors and provide the opportunity for interaction with your fellow students. Sessions are usually delivered at UK evening times, and these tutorials are archived in case you miss one. Learning is designed to equip you for the real-world problems that you are likely to meet in your job.

MRes in Experimental Physiology and Drug Discovery (Bio-Imaging) is a unique 12 month full-time multi-disciplinary course which aims to give all participants an introduction to the different aspects of biomedical imaging (including hardware and probe development, in vivo and in vitro experimental application, software development and data analysis). In addition, participants will be given training in comparative anatomy, physiology and pharmacology of laboratory animals, they will also obtain a Home Office Personal licence and hands-on experience of a range of in-vivo techniques used in research.


Students will follow already taught courses in Biomedical Imaging, and Experimental Physiology and Drug Discovery. Students will also be taught transferrable skills subjects, such as safety awareness, intellectual property management, time and project management and presentation and communication skills. In addition, students will undertake an individual research project throughout the course and submit a research thesis.


Aims and Objectives

Provide science graduates with:

- an introduction to the different aspects of biomedical imaging
- the ability to perform biomedical imaging, such as probe development or the experimental applicatoin of imaging in vivo
- intensive hands-on in vivo functional biology research training
- the ability to perform the physiological and pharmacological studies in drug development

Part A: Bio-imaging, animal handling, Home Office training course, comparative anatomy and physiology and drug discovery.

Part B: Six practical modules focused on in vivo research skills (problem solving, e-learning, journal club and lectures).

Part C: 21 week in vivo research project

Career opportunities

The course will provide students with an insight into the principles of drug discovery and translational medical science. Importantly, those students wanting to undertake a PhD in in-vivo science will have gained a Home Office personal licence and be confident in animal handling and techniques. The students will thus be well equipped to make rapid progress in research. Furthermore, having learnt about biomedical imaging from development to application, they will also be better equipped to develop a fully integrative approach to their research problem. The multidisciplinary nature of the course will give students the ability to appreciate the importance of translating the results of scientific and cliical discoveries into potential benefits to healthcare.
