Eight Master of Music specializations are offered, but the program is interdisciplinary, with a vocalist in a classroom beside a composer beside a musicologist, etc. Internationally renowned faculty members perform, compose, teach, conduct, publish, and present their research or music continually, from South Korea to Costa Rica to Rome. A low faculty-to-student ratio enables high-quality personalized instruction and collaboration. Instrumentalists are involved in coaching undergrads from the beginning, and graduate assistants enjoy opportunities reserved for doctoral students at other institutions. Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance offers a full range of research degrees at MPhil and PhD level.

The courses we offer are:

The Research Degree Programme includes an induction period, research skills training, seminars, and a requirement to present your research work on a regular basis. You will have one-to-one meetings with two allocated Research Supervisors.

The options in creative practice are suitable for those whose main focus is in composition, choreography, performance, or any related activity which embodies practical components, including those whose research incorporates interdisciplinary collaborations. In addition, historical research projects that utilise archive resources at Trinity Laban are also admissible under this option.

The options in science and pedagogy are available for those specialising in empirical approaches to topics in music and/or dance research and those who wish to concentrate on educational and pedagogical aspects.

Under normal circumstances, research degree candidates initially register for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme, allowing them time to develop their research methodology and refine their topic. The projects will be assessed at a midway stage, at which time transfers to the PhD programme may be considered.

Registration can be either in full-time or part-time mode, and there are two intakes for the Research Degree Programme in each academic year: January and September. We also offer options for suitably experienced Staff Candidates to pursue doctoral study, and in appropriate cases, submission by prior publication is possible.

All candidates are required to submit a detailed research proposal, which outlines the area(s) of study and a description of how these correlate with existing areas of scholarship, both theoretical and practical. You will also be asked to state how the proposed research project is represented in terms of the research interests of Trinity Laban, and, if necessary, how the resources of the institution will be utilised.

There are two deadlines for submission of applications. They are 1 June for the September intake; and 1 October for the January intake.

Your application will consist of (up to) six elements: (1) an outline research proposal, (2) a summary CV, (3) certified copies of all degree certificates, (4) a copy of English Language certification (if required), (5) for proposals engaging in practical elements, a portfolio of your creative practice, and (6) the Trinity Laban RDP application form.

What You Study

During the first year of the MA Music Therapy course, you will establish a strong theoretical basis built up from a range of disciplines, with an emphasis on psychodynamic music therapy. Your competence in clinical practice and your understanding of therapeutic relationships will then be developed in years two and three through supervised placements. These will be integrated with your university based learning.

Uniquely, you will benefit from training alongside colleagues who are trainee art psychotherapists, and you will acquire insight and a shared understanding of the other creative modality, as a basis for future professional practice in multi-disciplinary teams.

You will be assessed through a combination of essays, presentations, practicals, coursework, professional development, improvisations, performance, dissertation and viva voce assessment.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

This PGCE course, which is closely linked to the Royal Northern College of Music, will prepare you for a career in music teaching and challenge your thoughts about music education. The Specialist Instrumental Teaching route combines learning to teach music in the classroom and teaching your instrument (wind, brass, percussion, strings or voice) in different contexts.

Our award-winning Brooks building in Manchester has specialist music facilities, including practice rooms.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

Applicants should note these are two separate PGCEs within the same programme so they will need to specify which one they are applying for.

These courses are available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. Trainees on the University-led ('Core') route typically spend at least 120 days on school-based training. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements are organised by Manchester Met and will be in at least two different schools or colleges and ranging from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

School Direct trainees are attached to a specified ('lead') school within an alliance of schools and will typically spend at least 135 days on school-based training, depending on the term-times of the school(s) involved. The lead school organises placements.

All trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

The Secondary PGCE ‘Musicians in Education’ is a collaboration between Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the University of Greenwich. It combines our expertise as one of the country’s leading conservatoires with a long tradition of teacher education at the University of Greenwich. The aim of the programme is simple: to prepare flexible and creative musicians who are confident working across a range of educational contexts. Programme Content

Training is provided through collaboration between Trinity Laban (16 days) and the University of Greenwich (44 days), and is underpinned by significant placement learning opportunities within the schools sector (120 days, of which 10 are placements in alternative contexts with Trinity Laban's partners). These elements will enable you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to teach in secondary schools, and you will be formally assessed against the national statutory requirements for Qualified Teacher Status.

In addition to practical teaching experience gained in two main schools, the partnership between Trinity Laban and the University enables you to gain training and teaching experience outside of classroom settings, for example in instrumental/vocal teaching for a Music Hub, school Musical Futures or community rock/pop projects, or leading orchestral outreach projects. As part of a collaborative team you will also design, coordinate and lead a two-day immersive creative composition project in a school.

In support of this work, you will be able to undertake instrumental/vocal lessons with Trinity Laban's outstanding teachers and will also be mentored by subject specialist teachers from whom you will receive daily feedback and guidance.

Progression Routes

By gaining Qualified Teacher Status you become a qualified teacher for both the maintained and independent sectors. The majority of our graduates become secondary music teachers. However, there are other opportunities, such as working for local authority music services in instrumental teaching or curriculum support. Some students use the skills they have developed to pursue a career as freelance workshop musicians.

The Master of Music in Performance is designed to develop student musicianship and technical expertise through individual study, and through solo, ensemble, and chamber performance opportunities, all under the direction of faculty artists. Music Perfor- mance students can complete their program in three or more semesters during the academic year. Course detail

Building on our reputation for excellent undergraduate education in performance, composition, and digital audio arts, the Master of Music offers students the opportunity to join a dynamic community of experienced and active professional musicians and scholars. The MMus program combines advanced Studio or Digital Audio Arts instruction with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in areas that include:

Although grounded in classical music, students are encouraged to study broadly and synthesize their work into a personalized artistic expression. The MMus degree is a two-year, full-time program of applied and academic study. The University provides substantial financial support to all full-time graduate students. Additional scholarships are also available once entered into the program.

The flexible modular structure of our taught MA programme allows students to focus on a chosen area of specialism but simultaneously facilitates exploration of a wide range of research areas relating to music. It will provide an excellent foundation for undertaking postgraduate research at doctoral level, but will also benefit the professional development of musicians intending to pursue careers in teaching, arts administration, broadcasting, and other domains.

Students on the Taught MA programme join a vibrant international postgraduate community and study with scholars, composers, and performers who have achieved international recognition in their fields. The Music Department has been ranked in the top three music departments nationally in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and the Complete University Guide 2016.

The MA Music programme will normally facilitate study of the following areas of specialism:

Learning and Teaching

The programme is delivered through a mixture of seminars, practical sessions and one to one supervision. Seminars provide opportunities for students to discuss and debate particular issues, and to present their own original work, informed by the knowledge that they have gained through independent study outside the programme’s formal contact hours. Practical sessions in areas such as studio or field recording techniques help to prepare students for their own independent work.

All students must undertake an independent project (dissertation,composition portfolio, or performance), which is developed with the help of one-to-one expert supervision. Finally, optional modules can be drawn from the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of Music or of other departments –these free-choice modules may involve other forms of staff-student contact, depending on the subject area. The Department actively promotes interdisciplinary approaches to the study of music and students are encouraged to engage with other disciplines in the humanities and sciences.

The contact hours experienced by each individual student will vary considerably, given a high degree of flexibility in the programme. Students will typically attend between 2 and 4 hours of seminars per week in term time, as well as additional practical sessions as appropriate. Individual supervision of dissertations, performance projects and composition portfolios amounts to an average of 6 hours spread over over the second and third terms.

Outside timetabled contact hours, students are also expected to attend research seminars, both student-led and those involving staff or guest academic speakers (typically 1-2 hrs each week). They must also undertake their own independent study to prepare for their classes and assessments, to broaden their subject knowledge and to prepare their dissertations or portfolios. Students are encouraged, as an integral part of their studies, to take advantage of other opportunities including participating in performance opportunities (including staff-led ensembles) and attending research and composition seminars, some of which are organised in conjunction with university research institutes.

There is a busy programme of musical performance, both within and outside the music department, which complements students’ academic programme by providing opportunities both to listen to and to perform a wide variety of music. The many musical ensembles to which students can contribute includes both independent societies (including orchestras, choirs, opera and musical theatre as well as a Javanese gamelan) and department-run ensembles such as the New Music Ensemble and Korean percussion group.

The Professional Studies module will be at the core of your learning experience. You will work with your instrumental, vocal or composition teacher and Head of Department to create a personalised route through the module, combining individual and small group tuition with major performance opportunities in both chamber and large ensemble contexts.

All students benefit from intensive individualised tuition in their Principal Study discipline. Each instrumental and vocal student receives one hour of one to one tuition each week enhanced by regular small group lessons/classes.

Individual Principal Study Enhancement lessons on a related, complementary or doubling instrument. Vocal students typically dedicate their Principal Study enhancement time to vocal coaching. Composition students receive a balanced combination of individual and small group lessons, and are encouraged to dedicate their Principal Study enhancement lessons to instrumental or vocal training, or pursuit of a complementary discipline such as music technology or conducting.
