This programme provides students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of peace and conflict theories, issues and practices, and an ability to apply theory and case studies to the practices of peacebuilding in complex situations. With opportunities to develop critically reflective peace-making practices in a friendly and supporting learning environment, the programme promotes breadth and depth of intellectual enquiry and is underpinned with a concern for integrity and courage.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Alongside the MA-route (180M credits), this programme can also be studied at Postgraduate Certificate (60M credits) and Postgraduate Diploma level (120M credits), and is offered via blended learning or distance learning. The three different qualifications on offer are sequential, and can therefore lead into one another, following the successful completion of the earlier portion.

At Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) stage, you will study three mandatory modules:
-Peace, Conflict and Security in the 21st Century
-Philosophies of Non-Violence and Reconciliation
-Peacebuilding: Theories into Practice

At Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) stage you will undertake one core module, Project Management in Practice, and two elective modules from the following list:

-Gender, Peace and Conflict.
-Migration, Displacement and Belonging
-Privatisation of International Security
-Comparative Peace Processes

At MA Stage, you will undertake a dissertation in an area of study which you would like to explore in more depth, with support from a supervisor.

Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations are pleased to offer a limited number of partial bursaries towards tuition fees, available to overseas students who wish to pursue an MA in Maritime Security or Peace and Conflict Studies.

Viewed through both international and regional lenses, the field of conflict management will be explored in its many facets, with special attention paid to the wider Middle East conflict while conceptual, practical and comparative elements of conflict management of other global conflicts are examined.

As a deeply divided society and a country in protracted conflict with other countries in the region, Israel is a unique environment for a program whose goal is to enable students to understand how conflicts unfold from the grassroots level and move up through the halls of government to the international community. What you will study

The interdisciplinary program of study includes courses in political science, international relations, psychology, sociology, communications, history and regional studies. Included in the course of study are a number of field trips throughout Israel in order to gain close familiarity with certain aspects of the local conflict. There is also a practicum component in NGOs related to aspects of peace-making and conflict management; thoughtful simulations of decision making processes, negotiations and conflict management; and guest lectures given by activists, practitioners, politicians, diplomats, academics and former military officials.

Over the course of three semesters we will study sources, types and levels of conflicts, where students will become familiar with tools to trace their development. The curriculum takes as its focus courses on conflict management and provides students with practical tools in the fostering of peace processes. The American Graduate School in Paris and Arcadia University jointly offer an accelerated Dual Masters program allowing students to earn two US-accredited Master’s degrees in three years:

Each program followed individually normally extends over two years, which would make a total of four years to earn the two degrees separately. Thanks to curricula combinations, the accelerated dual program allows students to earn both degrees in three years.

Students in this program spend three semesters in Paris, France, at the American Graduate School in Paris, and three semesters in the United States, at Arcadia University, in the greater Philadelphia area. They may choose to start the program at either of the two institutions. Each portion of the program provides a different cultural and academic experience, while both have in common a challenging and student-dedicated learning environment.

The knowledge and skills acquired during this two-fold program can be applied to a vast array of fields in government, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs): human rights, diplomacy, international law, humanitarian relief, environmental policymaking, sustainable development, and conflict management, among others. Description of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy

The curriculum of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy teaches the cornerstone theories that explain interactions between countries, and also examines current world affairs through the various lenses of international relations: political, diplomatic, economic, environmental, cultural, and social. A range of area electives supplements this global approach allowing each student to gear the program towards his or her field of interest and professional goals.

Courses take place at AGS in Paris. They are taught in English and follow the American system of higher education while taking advantage of the school’s location in France, with guest speakers and visits to embassies, international organizations headquartered in Paris and European Union institutions. No knowledge of French language is necessary to attend. Small seminar-style classrooms allow for close dialogue with professors and offer a forum for debate. The students and faculty in the program come from diverse national backgrounds, each adding a different perspective to the subjects taught.

The International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) degree offers an innovative curriculum giving students a sophisticated understanding of today’s international issues by bridging the various sub-disciplines of this emerging field: human rights, international law and organizations, mediation and conflict transformation, public health issues, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

The coursework provides strong theoretical and analytical foundations and is complemented with hands-on experiences, including travels to key sites of the history of international conflict, and an internship allowing students to gain professional practice while developing a network of useful contacts.

Courses take place at Arcadia University in the United States, in Glenside, in the greater Philadelphia area (Pennsylvania). The faculty and staff at the International Peace and Conflict Resolution Department are committed to addressing the individual needs of each student, and work closely with them to make every component of the program fit their interests and career goals.

Graduation Requirements

In order to complete the dual degree program and graduate with the M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, students are required to successfully complete 65-68 graduate credit-hours. This programme has a strong focus on post-violence peacebuilding, which is appropriate given that it is rooted in a society emerging from decades of protracted violence. However, the geographical scope of INCORE’s work in research, policy, and practice is both local and global and this is reflected in the modules offered on the programme.

The overall approach seeks to develop the critical, theoretical and analytical skills necessary for working in conflicted societies – in ways that are grounded in real life application and case studies.

Attendance

The MSc takes one calander year. You will normally be expected to attend class for 4-5 hours on two days a week during Semester One (Sept- Jan) and Semester Two (Jan - May). Students conduct their dissertation during Semester Three (June - Sept). The programme will be supplemented with seminars and lectures by visiting academics and practitioners, as well as field visits.

Who We Are

Life is conflict. Life is cooperation. Both define the human condition. Conflict will never be eliminated, nor should it be, because conflict can foster change. But conflict can be approached in ways that do not involve mass killings, assaults on human rights, and oppressive structural violence that creates the appearance of order while people suffer. The newly created Master’s Program (and Bachelor’s/Master’s Program) in Peace and Conflict Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University-Newark offers a unique approach to the issues which will shape our future. Based in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, this program prepares students for further scholarship or employment in three areas: the social bases of peace and conflict, the causes of large-scale violence, and nonviolent social conflict and recovery from violence. Students will also have opportunities for research and practical internships associated with the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and the International Institute for Peace, whose Directors are faculty members of the Master’s Program. The Center and Institute bring scholars, policy makers, peacemakers, projects, and events to our campus, and connect us to researchers, practitioners, and peacebuilding communities around the world.

What Makes Us Unique

There are many good programs covering peace and conflict issues, but ours is different in two ways. First, the Master’s is based in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and is oriented to the social bases of conflict and cooperation, of war and peace. Social dimensions include topics of migration, economic development, environmental degradation, inequality, education, race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Beyond the Sociology/Anthropology Core Faculty and courses, the program is very interdisciplinary. Associate faculty, including both Newark and New Brunswick campuses, come from programs and departments of Political Science, Global Affairs, History, English, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Economics, and Religion.

Second, we expect graduates to have dual competence in understanding violent conflict, such as war, genocide, ethnic violence, and terrorism; and in nonviolence, including both nonviolent prosecution of conflict as through social movements and civil resistance, and in moving away from violent struggle toward reconciliation, justice, and sustainable peace.

Our students will be prepared to continue toward a higher degree in the most demanding PhD programs. They also will attain a most valuable competence for employment by any governmental agency, NGO, or business working in areas of high social conflict—the ability to analyze and communicate about complex situations, understanding the interacting factors that lead to nonviolent social movements or to large scale violence, ways to mitigate destructive conflict, and move forward toward sustainable peace.

MA Program Description

Students may be full or part-time. Master’s students will complete 36 credits, and pass a final examination. A full-time student may complete the program in three semesters. Part-time students should complete it within three years, with extension beyond that requiring program approval.

Nine credits of foundations include

  • An introductory seminar from the program’s Core Faculty.
  • Qualitative or quantitative methods.
  • A course in classical or contemporary social theory.

Distribution requirements include

  • One course each from Core Courses (below) in Social Bases of Conflict and Cooperation, Violent Conflict, and Nonviolent Movements and Recovery from Violence.
  • Electives comprise six to fifteen credits, depending on whether the student accrues credit from experiential education in applied contexts, internships, or faculty-supervised independent study. Electives may be filled by approved courses throughout Rutgers University.

Final Graduation Requirements

It is a unique programme which is jointly offered by the University of Kent and the Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany and is taught in English.

You gain advanced knowledge in peace and conflict research, designed to help you understand the causes of violent conflict and to explain its effects and dynamics. As befits the complexity of violent conflict, the programme is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on insights from politics and international relations, sociology and psychology. It examines the major theories and leading practices of conflict and conflict resolution, supplementing theory with detailed case studies. This interdisciplinary MA explores the processes through which actors have attempted to define and build peace in areas affected by war and violence, particularly since the end of the Cold War. Drawing on expertise from the fields of history, politics, anthropology and the arts, this newly revamped course will offer students the opportunity to engage with conflict management, conflict resolution, conflict transformation, peacebuilding and statebuilding theories and practices.

 Moreover, the programme will critically address the conceptualization of peace and the implementation of peacebuilding projects by global, regional, national and local actors, including the UN, the International Financial Institutions, development agencies and donors, INGOs, and local organisations in conflict-affected environments. In particular, it will focus on social agency for peace, the question of the nature of the `peaceful state', and the ever-fraught question of the reform of the international system. The dynamics of these various contributions to peace will be the focus of a guided engagement, via local partner organisations, with the range of peace and conflict management actors present in either Bosnia Herzegovina or Cyprus (in Semester II).

Aims

Students will be able to show a critical understanding of:

1. Key issues and debates related to the theories of peace and practices of peacebuilding, statebuilding, conflict management, resolution, and transformation. They will become familiar with the range of international actors and organisations, their policies and practices, and their pros and cons.

2. The range of social science topics that influence peacebuilding, statebuilding, conflict management, etc., (including political, historical, anthropological understandings of peace and related programming strategies). Students will become familiar with the methodological and normative underpinnings of these disciplines.

3. The analytical and policy literature concerning peacebuilding, international governance structures, statebuilding, and the role of key actors and institutions including NGOs and military and other security actors. Concurrently, students will be able to evaluate the theory and policy tools in the context of the recent history of peacebuilding and statebuilding since the end of the Cold War, in a range of examples, including across the Balkans, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, the recent and various Arab Revolts, and others.

4. An understanding of local approaches to peacebuilding, including an awareness of the problems and critiques associated with `bottom up' approaches. Students will examine current debates on the nature of everyday peace and hybrid forms of peace, related questions about `local agency' and forms of resistance, activism, and social mobilisation.

5. Students will experience the on-the-ground realities of peacebuilding and statebuilding through a guided research visit to the range of actors involved in Bosnia-Herzegovina or Cyprus. This will form a key part of one of the core modules of the programme and will be run in association with local partners.

6. The development of a range of academic and professional/transferrable skills through both independent and group-based work.

7. A detailed understanding of a specific conceptual and/or policy-related area of peacebuilding along with the implications and limitations of research findings on this subject, and of how to produce an original piece of academic research. This will be delivered via the dissertation.

Special features

The Institute is developing a novel configuration for research and teaching which will uniquely associate practitioners, non-governmental organisation (NGO) partners, theoreticians, policy makers and analysts in sustained intellectual engagement. Combining a targeted programme of research with the provision of timely analysis on current emergencies and conflicts, the institute will seek to develop new methodologies in the emerging field of humanitarian and conflict response research.

Background

The University of Winnipeg and The University of Manitoba established four joint masters programs. The resources of both universities were thus made available for graduate work to the Masters level in these disciplines. Students enrolling in a Joint Masters Program enjoy at both universities all the rights and privileges normally accorded to graduate students; two months before their expected date of graduation they shall declare in writing the university from which they wish to receive their degree.

As part of the agreement establishing these Joint Masters Programs, it was arranged that administrative aspects, e.g. admission, registration, etc. would be entirely in the hands of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at The University of Manitoba. Peace & Conflict Studies

This joint Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies is offered by the Conflict Resolution Studies Program at the University of Winnipeg in cooperation with the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice at St. Paul’s College at the University of Manitoba - encompasses analysis of social conflicts including the structural roots of social divisions and inequalities, as well as strategies for transforming conflict and promoting social justice. The program uses holistic and interdisciplinary approaches to prepare students to pursue independent research and practice in local, national and global and conflict dynamics and issues. The degree is offered with either a thesis option or a comprehensive examination. The programme reflects the international debates about the nature of peace and conflict in the developing world and the approaches of the international community to support and create peaceful governance in areas of conflict.

The programme makes a direct link between academic and practical policy approaches to analysing and recovering from conflicts, with an emphasis on developing countries, and will provide an extensive menu of choices for masters level students. This is an innovative programme taught by one of the leading centres of excellence in this field internationally. IDD hosts the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding and the Journal of Civil Wars and has produced the leading textbook in this area, Conflict, Security and Development. IDD staff also edit two book series in Statebuilding and Conflict and Development for Routledge. As such the programme draws on our world-leading research to provide an offering that is research-led but also strongly informed by our regular involvement in policy in this area. We are a development department that is looking at peace and conflict. This gives us a particular range of modules and an approach that is unique amongst our competitors, most of which are delivered from an international security perspective. We are currently one of the market leaders in security and development and that particular relationship is in demand with increasing concerns about development aid, refugees, civil wars and the implications for post conflict reconstruction.

The programme looks at the dynamics of conflict and post-conflict politics, including the linkages between good governance, state-building, state resilience, fragility or collapse and approaches to reconstructing peace following violence. It draws on relevant debates, theories and approaches to development, innovations in theories and practices of good governance and state-building in application to developing and transitional countries. All students have access to significant knowledge of the design and implementation of post-conflict peacebuilding and development strategies, including contemporary debates related to international intervention, local political systems, hybridity and the politics of peacebuilding.

Course Structure

The MSc will provide students with advanced knowledge of the complex and specialised areas of peacebuilding, among it conflict analysis, conflict prevention, conflict resolution and conflict transformation, community driven reconstruction, peace processes within the context of contemporary conflicts and in the context of broader international (humanitarian) interventions. Integrated into the MSc structure are opportunities to develop operational and vocational skills for example in negotiations, conflict mediation, conflict sensitive programme design and programme management, or urban peacebuilding. Students are provided with theoretical and empirical knowledge and with practical skills that are helpful for current and future employment opportunities. The courses are thus attractive to both graduates and mid-career practitioners. Whilst the academic and applied focus of the MSc comes through a peace and conflict studies analytic lens, course material will also draw from traditional strategic/security and development studies, enabling cross fertilisation between different perspectives. It allows the exploration of unique and new paradigms and practices in the fields of conflict, peace, security, defence, diplomacy, development and humanitarian intervention.

Course Learning and Teaching

At the beginning of the academic year, as well as the general induction programme offered by the School and the university, Durham Global Security Institute (DGSi) students are invited to a programme specific induction. This induction provides an overview of the programme an opportunity to meet members of the team and an opportunity to discuss optional module choices.

 The 180 credits one-year MSc degree programme is divided into five core and three optional modules of 15 credits each. Students also have to submit a dissertation (60 credits) of not more than15,000 words. Practitioners have the option of writing an in-depth policy document as their dissertation.

Most of the modules are delivered during the first two terms and students spend the remaining time to write the dissertation. Assessment methods include: an examination, essays, presentations, reflective journal, reports, article reviews and policy briefs. 

Although all modules have 18/19 contact hours, the core modules are spread over 9/10 weeks and 132 hours of self-directed learning. The modules are mainly delivered through weekly 2-hour sessions which take the form of a one hour lecture and a one hour tutorial. The form in which seminars are conducted can differ from one module to another. Typically modules would have elements of lectures, discussions, and presentations from students—the extent of each of these components would differ from one module to another. The optional modules of the programme are either delivered over two full days, through a mixture of lectures, Q&A sessions, seminar discussions, and role plays or over a single term in 2-hour seminar sessions. There is also the opportunity to participate in a study visit which provides an opportunity to investigate issues ‘in the field’ concerned with conflict prevention, conflict resolution, state and peace-building. Of particular interest is the theory-practice linkage

Students can also meet their module coordinators or programme coordinator during their weekly contact hours or by making an appointment. When students are working on their dissertations during the latter half of the year, they are required to attend two 4-hour workshops. In addition, they have the opportunity to meet their assigned supervisors for an average of 6 meetings. Students also have access to the MSc Programme Director and the School’s Director of Taught Post Graduate Studies whenever there is a need.

The School hosts events throughout the year which all postgraduate students are invited to attend. Students are also fully integrated into the Durham Global Security Institute which also hosts guest lectures and seminars throughout the year. These events provide students with the opportunity to engage with, and debate, the most important issues in current political and international studies, and in conflict, peace and security studies.

Towards the end of the programme students can contact the Careers Office of the University to get advice on available job prospects and get assistance on applying for these.

This MA programme is designed to critically examine the theoretical and methodological issues surrounding the dynamics of peace and conflict in the contemporary world. The programme engages with the work of leading peace and conflict studies scholars, at both conceptual and empirical levels, and draws on evidence from a range of recent armed conflicts.

The programme also addresses techniques in conflict resolution, such as mediation, in order to deepen your understanding, and to develop practical skills in conflict analysis. The programme also uses optional modules from Politics to support the core programme.

You will take five taught modules each assessed by a 5,000 word essay. The programme culminates in the writing of a 20,000-word dissertation in a subject area of your own choosing.

The course combines perspectives from international relations, ethics and conflict resolution to reflect critically upon the wide range of social, political and economic issues associated with peace and political violence. A week-long Mediation Summer School provides an opportunity to develop practical skills in the area of conflict resolution and mediation. There is also the option to participate in various field trips in Ireland and abroad. Students are required to take the two core modules as well as four modules from the list of modules.
