You will acquire knowledge and skills in those areas of Technology and Design in which you may have had little or no experience, e.g. CAD (solid works) , Electronic Systems, PCB production, Pneumatic Control Systems, Graphics and Computer Control Systems. While practical in nature, you will draw on knowledge gained from the other areas of the course and at all times, apply these skills in the classroom. As an aspiring professional, you will be expected to be self-motivated and to take the initiative in managing your own professional development. In your school placements you will be expected to prioritize pupil learning and develop your teaching strategies accordingly. Elements of the course are taught at Masters level and you will be expected to support your development with a detailed understanding of current research and literature in teaching, learning and Technology and Design. You will be assessed through a variety of means including e-portfolio, essays, observations and tests.

“The Northern Ireland Curriculum aims to empower young people to achieve their potential and to make informed and responsible decisions throughout their lives.” The overall aim of our PGCE programme at Ulster is to support this aim and to foster the development of pedagogical competences in the following three areas: - Professional Values and Practice; Professional Knowledge and Understanding and Professional Skills and Application. To achieve these aims the PGCE post-primary programme at Ulster University prepares student teachers to be competent in the following: - the ability to plan, teach and assess worthwhile learning activities in their subject area(s) in post-primary schools in Northern Ireland for the 11-18 age group; - the acquisition of the knowledge, understanding and skills that are essential for the promotion of learning among pupils; - to assume responsibility for developing as competent reflective practitioners, able to monitor and evaluate their teaching performance; - to realise a commitment to on-going personal and professional development in pursuit of sustained pupil learning and school improvement. Student teachers on the PGCE will evidence their competence through achieving the following objectives by demonstrating:

  • a critical understanding of the Northern Ireland Curriculum and of National Curriculum requirements;
  • a knowledge of their subject and its contribution to the area of study and to the “Big Picture” of the curriculum at Key Stages 3 & 4 with its objectives of: a) developing the young person as an individual; b) developing the young person as a contributor to society and c) developing the young person as a contributor to the economy and the environment.

The successful completion of the PGCE also requires the student to:

  • recognise and take account of those factors which influence curriculum planning in a particular school context;
  • understand how children learn and appreciate the social, moral, psychological and cultural factors which affect educational attainment; plan, teach and evaluate lessons, units and schemes of work organise and manage classes effectively;
  • use a range of teaching and learning methodologies supported by resources for pupils of all ability levels, including those with special educational needs;
  • recognise the need for continuity, progression and differentiation in pupils' learning;
  • assess for learning including the recording and reporting pupil achievement;
  • adopt an assessment of learning mindset;;
  • develop pupils' language and numeracy skills through the teaching of their subject;
  • promote skills of problem solving, decision making, presentation, teamwork, leadership and independent learning;
  • develop pupils' personal and interpersonal skills;
  • promote fairness and equality of opportunity;
  • build and sustain good relationships with both pupils and staff;
  • work co-operatively with colleagues and other student teachers and contribute to school wide activities;
  • develop skills and confidence in Information Communications Technology (ICT) and emerging technologies for both personal and professional use.

Jurisdiction

The PGCE is a recognized teaching qualification in the UK. For those applicants wishing to teach in other jurisdictions we recommend that you contact the relevant authorities there to discuss their requirements for recognised teacher status.

Attendance

This is a programme of professional education and training of teachers for the teaching profession. Attendance therefore is compulsory for all activities, modules and components of the course. The main PGCE course runs from the end of August to the beginning of June. University modules normally run from Monday to Friday (9:30-4:30) and students are required to attend all classes and course activities. School placements (of which there are two, each of twelve weeks) require commitment to the school, usually 8:30-5:00 with evenings spent in lesson preparation.

The T&D PGCE course includes a six week workshop practice in Belfast, normally commencing in July each year. An additional specialised course will run on Wednesday afternoons in Belfast during September and October.

Work placement / study abroad

Students nominate three secondary schools and three grammar schools for the teaching practice placements. Every effort is made to accommodate student preferences.

Career options

The course prepares you to teach Technology & Design at post primary school level. Where appropriate students may have opportunities to teach other subjects, depending on their own degree and A-Level specialisms.

The PGCE is an internationally recognised programme for Initial Teacher Education leading directly to a career in teaching. The post primary PGCE is for those who wish to teach the 11-19 age range. Successful completion of this course qualifies the graduate to seek registration with the General Teaching Council of Northern Ireland.

The MSc in Digital Systems Engineering is a one-year full-time taught course that makes extensive use of the knowledge and expertise from our well established Intelligent Systems and Nano-Science Research Group.

It is intended to provide students with a good theoretical background and solid hands-on experience of the techniques used in modern digital systems design. Using FPGAs as a hardware platform and VHDL as a design language, the programme provides students with:
-A balanced picture of state-of-the-art digital systems design methods
-A sound theoretical and practical knowledge of digital devices, tools, data networks and operating systems
-The ability to learn new techniques to keep up-to-date with new developments in an industrial and/or research setting
-Experience of the use of industry-standard tools to make them attractive candidates for prospective employers in the field
-Experience of working within a group and of the important management skills required by industry
-Hands-on experience of the different stages of the design of a modern digital system, which will culminate in the construction of a complex device (for example, an FPGA-based MP3 player)

Course Content

The course aims to provide a broad-based introduction to state-of-the-art digital system design techniques and to provide a solid grounding in both theory and practice. It is suitable for students wishing to pursue a career in digital electronic industry and research.

The aim of this substantial group project is to immerse the students in a life-like scenario of a company developing digital systems. The project will involve the design, construction and implementation of a complete FPGA-based digital system, providing students with practical experience of project management and team skills. The system will include both software (such as human-computer interface, low-level programming) and hardware (such as FPGA, A/D converters, communication interfaces) components. The project will culminate in the design and realisation of a printed circuit board hosting a FPGA interfaced to a variety of peripherals. Communication links allowing connection to a PC will enable the creation of a diverse range of multimedia, diagnostic or communication systems. Furthermore, at the end of the project, students will keep the boards they have designed, providing them with a complete FPGA development system, allowing them to further investigate digital systems design.

The project preparation will begin towards the end of the Autumn term when groups will be given a Quality Assurance manual, that will prepare the students to establish effective company policies, procedures and roles for group members, introducing the Quality Assurance processes applied to medium to large projects in industry.

In the Autumn term, a module on 'C Programming' will hone the students' skills required to effectively carry out the software components of the project. The module will provide a practical introduction to writing and running C programs as an example of a procedural programming language.

In the Spring term, the actual project will get under way. Groups of 4-6 students will be formed, assigned a target system to design, and provided with a budget. In this term, the students will prepare an implementation plan that will be followed for the remainder of the project. Detailed system specifications will be established and the budget allocated, taking into account the cost of components and off-the-shelf IP modules.

In the Summer term, the project will continue with the pre-implementation phase. Students will design a PCB with the components (FPGA, communication interfaces, displays, memories, etc.) defined in the system specifications. The design will be sent to fabrication and returned by the end of term. Along with the PCB design, the students will develop a block-level algorithmic description of the system to be implemented, defining the role of each component within the system and beginning the development of the software components of the system.

Description:

An exciting Industrial Masters by Research opportunity has arisen out of the ongoing relationship between the University of Salford and Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd.

Highlighted by the recent flooding issues in the UK, Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd believes that there is a need for improved weather detection and is looking to design a low-cost , wireless weather sensor and transmitter to enable early warning sensing and quantitative data for analysis. Dyer believes this data can be used for many applications e.g. flood warning/defenses; agricultural irrigation control; building automation; and the data collection for future modelling.

The aim of this Industrial Masters project is to produce a trialed and tested working prototype unit which Dyer Environmental can then look to submit for commercial development.

The collaboration

The School of Built Environment at the University of Salford has a strong track record of working with industry. The placement will be with the Applied Buildings and Energy Research Group, which is home to the Salford Energy House. Over the last 5 years we have developed detailed knowledge of sensors to understand both internal and external environments that are used in both laboratory and field environments.

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd has worked closely with the University of Salford for the past 8 years, completing a 2.5 year KTP project and also sponsoring a PhD student. Dyer has also worked on various projects with the University of Salford’s Energy House. Now celebrating its 25th year, Dyer has worked within the ventilation and building automation sectors and is constantly striving for innovation. Dyer’s success is through customer relationships and flexibility – providing the most efficient and most effective solution for their customer’s needs. The KTP project succeeded in bringing a new product to market and is now sold globally.

Candidates:

The preferred candidates must have a good understanding of:
• A suitable undergraduate level award in electronics/electronics engineering
• The design/implementation and construction of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
• A good working knowledge of C & C++ for embedded microcontrollers, wireless/ mobile communications and PCB layout and design.
• Should have a working knowledge of meteorological or environmental sensors

Candidates are asked to provide a personal statement describing their background, skills, academic interests and their motivation for doing a Masters in no more than 2 sides of A4. This should include evidence of being able to work independently to a high standard, collaborate with others, and excellent writing skills.

The Successful candidate will work mainly on the premises of the University but will spend a significant amount of time at the Company Partner premises.
