Civil and structural engineering encompasses a range of disciplines, including road, rail and drainage systems, dams, harbours, bridges, buildings and other structures. Civil and structural designers and drafters plan, design, develop and manage construction and repair projects.
This qualification develops your skills and knowledge in the design and drafting of engineering plans to recognised standards. You will learn about different areas of civil engineering, including construction, project management, design and testing. You will also learn about the design and drafting of concrete, steelwork, roads and pipes, as well as hydrology, stormwater drainage and foundations.
While it is essential that those who work in the supervisory or management levels of this discipline have a firm understanding of drafting and planning principles, this qualification goes much further. To be effective on the job, you will need to know how to apply knowledge of fundamental civil and structural engineering concepts, including geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, engineering maths, and properties of materials. Throughout the program this subject matter will be placed into the context of engineering management. Our aim is to ensure that you are an effective, knowledgeable and skilled supervisor or manager, someone who can work beyond a “plan and design” brief to ensure that a project is delivered effectively.
This qualification aims to provide theoretical and practical education and training such that graduates may gain employment at the engineering associate (“paraprofessional”) level within the building and construction industry.

The Road Management and Engineering programme is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge of management procedures for the planning, appraisal, design, construction and maintenance of road networks.
The programme is relevant to conditions found in both developed and developing countries and are suitable for road engineers and civil engineering graduates who want to pursue a career in road management.
The course has been devised to meet the demands of both the UK and overseas road industry. It offers advanced training to engineers aspiring to higher or middles management in public and private sector road management.
Management-focused modules complement the range of subjects taught in the engineering oriented modules and include state-of-the-art principles and practices associated with road asset management, economics and financing, HDM-4 (the World Bank’s de facto standard for road investment appraisal) and planning.
The programme consists of taught modules and a research project. Student development is through a combination of lectures, tutorials, site visits and major and minor projects. The programme is also designed with part-time students in mind, and is formulated specifically to facilitate the career development of individuals working in the roads sector and meet the demands of both the UK and overseas road industry. Part-time students take the same modules as full-time students, but can opt to take the programme over a two or three-year period. To facilitate this, each module is delivered two separate one-week blocks over the course of a semester.
The primary teaching interest is to provide postgraduate taught programmes (MSc, Diploma and Certificate) for both practising road engineers and Civil Engineering graduates that want to pursue a career in road management.
The programmes are designed to provide current knowledge in management procedures for the planning, appraisal, design, construction and maintenance of road networks. The programmes will be relevant to conditions found in both the developed and the developing countries. A key feature of the programmes delivery is flexibility that allows primarily UK-based practicing road engineers to attend the programmes on a part-time basis.

The Master of Engineering Studies in Transportation Engineering is a specialised masters degree programme developed in consultation with the land transport industry professionals and support from the NZ Transport Agency.
Industry leaders are directly involved through national and regional liaison committees as well as making contributions to lecture content, assignments and research projects.
Transportation is specifically concerned with transportation engineering - traffic engineering, transport and land use planning, highway engineering, pavement materials and management systems, road safety and crash investigation. This programme is focused on developing a sound understanding of fundamental concepts, techniques and issues.
The research component for this degree must be undertaken in a relevant area of Transportation Engineering. However, this can include a topic outside the areas covered on the programme. This research will be supervised by an academic staff member and will normally require some mentoring input or assistance from industry.
This specialisation aims to address the major shortage of suitably trained transportation engineering professionals.
It is anticipated the programme will enable graduates to take leading roles in planning, evaluating, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating the transport infrastructure.
The programme will also provide valuable background expertise for those wishing to enter into the management of the transport infrastructure or to begin to pursue a career in research and development.
