Innovation has become an imperative for most private firms but increasingly also in the public sector. Therefore, competences in innovation management are emphasised as one of today's most important competences by CEO's and governments alike.

The programme provides a general background on innovation management including

- the management of innovation from invention to commercialisation
- innovation strategies, structures, and cultures
- market forces of innovation and market-oriented new product development
- the management of intellectual property rights
- Entrepreneurship

The programme creates a unique opportunity to experience the challenges throughout the new product development process and to develop a mutual understanding about the rationales on the technology as well as on the business management side. There is a broad empirical basis that such a mutual understanding is a key prerequisite for successful cooperation between R&D and marketing and ultimately for innovation success. The aim of the programme is therefore to enhance students' understandings about strategies, structures, processes, people and cultures to develop successful innovations and to enhance the innovative capability of firms.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

PREREQUISITE COURSES

Management Research Method
The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner. You learn how to formulate research questions and to identify an appropriate research plan and methodology for the given set of research questions. This includes methodologies how to define unit of analysis and sample as well as methodologies how to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Entrepreneurship: Shaping Entrepreneurial Thinking
This course will enable you to develop entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour and to start your own firm based on your business ideas. Students develop and evaluate business ideas and learn how to develop a compelling business case based on entrepreneurial market research. The course furthermore includes the decision on the appropriate legal form for their new venture and new venture financing.

Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The course enables students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Together these competencies provide students with the ability to critically evaluate and choose relevant literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

New Product Development Clinic
The learning objective is to enable you to understand and execute the crucial tasks in the new product development process from idea generation to commercialisation. The course takes a concrete development problem as point of departure. Students will generate ideas for the solution of this problem and then carry out concept testing, prototype development, market assessment and pre-launch activities. Therefore, you will experience all the challenges in the new product development process hands-on. The course will be co-taught with faculty from Aarhus BSS and Aarhus School of Engineering. The teaching method of the course is project-based.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Appropriating innovation – Managing Intellectual property rights
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of how intellectual property rights, particularly patents, can be used as tools for technology development. A short introduction to the history and theory of patents is followed by an examination of the use of patents as tools of technology development. The course will also consider the evidence in support of the theory that patents on significant inventions are used to control and block 'downstream' innovation. Furthermore, the course will consider the 'anti-trust'- patent so-called 'interface' and recent changes to policy in favour of patents in the US.

Organising for Innovation
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of the firm-internal perspective and context on innovation. This includes the formulation of and decision for innovation strategies, organisational structures and designs for innovation, creativity and performance within innovation teams, cooperation between R&D and marketing in the new product development process, champions and promotors of innovation, the management of radical innovation and the measurement of innovation performance.

Open and User-Driven Innovation
Shorter product life cycles and increased technological complexity of new products and services force firms to increasingly open their innovation processes to external sources of innovation. The learning objective of this course is therefore to enable you to understand which relevant sources of innovation exist outside the firm and how a firm can systematically use these external sources as leverage for new product development and for enhancing the innovative capability of a firm. The course includes emerging forms of open and distributed innovation. Specific focus will be given to user-driven innovation, including market orientation in the new product development process, lead user innovation, user communities and user toolkits.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

Overview

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprised of law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. The MSc in Management of Intellectual Property explores the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trade marks and the other core areas within this field.

This Masters of Science is primarily aimed at science and engineering graduates who wish to pursue a career as patent or trade mark attorneys, though it is also open to graduates from all academic backgrounds who wish to study Intellectual Property (IP) at postgraduate level.

There is continued need for expertise in intellectual property law and management in industry, commerce and the innovative and creative industries, and this MSc gives you the opportunity to study IP to a high level. The programme offers a professional stream (for science and technology graduates), and a business stream, available to graduates from all fields looking to expand their knowledge of the application and management of IP.

Professional stream
The professional stream is directed towards graduates (primarily sciences and other technical industries, but also from all other backgrounds) seeking qualification as patent and trade mark attorneys.

Business stream
Students on the business stream will gain profound knowledge of the law and its operation with a view to working in areas such as the press and media, the entertainment industry, the internet and software industries, or the luxury goods industries. Further sectors where knowledge in Intellectual Property and related areas is seen as a particular advantage include governments, international organisations, universities or non-governmental institutions.

This programme will:
◦Give you a choice of two streams to suit your background; a professional stream for science and engineering graduates, and a business stream for graduates of other disciplines.
◦Offer science and engineering graduates the opportunity to gain professional exemptions from Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA).

What is Intellectual Property (IP) law?

Intellectual Property Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprising law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. This programme teaches the foundations of this area of law with relation to patents, trademarks and the other core areas within this field.

Why study Intellectual Property law?

The MSc Management of Intellectual Property programme was developed as we recognised the increasingly important role of intellectual property in our modern economy. There is an emerging need in industry, in commerce and in those professions concerned with intellectual property law, for science and technology graduates who have studied intellectual property law to a high level. In industry, particularly in small and medium-sized firms involved in research and development, where there is no in-house lawyer or patent agent, there is often a need for an intermediary between the firms and the external lawyer or patent agent for example; or for an executive to handle the inward or outward licensing of technology, to negotiate research and development contracts (where ownership of intellectual property is usually central to the bargaining) or generally to have a basic knowledge of current developments in the field of business law (eg. contract law, product liability law) insofar as these may relate to the firm's present or future activities.

With the introduction of the new business stream we also offer a distinct avenue for graduates from all backgrounds to gain valuable knowledge of intellectual property.

Structure of the MSc in Management of Intellectual Property

Classes usually commence mid-September with examinations in May/June. Courses are taught during the day at Queen Mary University of London campuses and usually take place between 9.00am and 5.00pm.

There is an initial Basic English Law examination which takes place two weeks after the start of the programme. Students then select which stream they wish to undertake.

Compulsory modules:

◦Study project (45 credits)
◦Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice (non-credit bearing but all students must pass this module at the start of the programme)

All students require 180 credits in total.

Professional stream students have core modules plus one free choice half module of 22.5 credits. In addition to this, professional stream students also sit two additional papers to gain exemption from the foundation papers of CIPA and ITMA, both papers must be passed to gain the exemption for either institution.

Business stream students have a free choice of 135 credits (three full modules or six half modules, or a combination of the two.)

All students are required to study the core subject units: Patent law, Copyright and designs law, Law of trade marks and unfair competition, Competition law, and Basic principles of English law, evidence and practice in term one. Occasional additional second semester options may be available.

LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law deals with the global and regional regulation of international trade, structuring and managing international business transactions, and the economic foundations of trade and corporate law.

Professional Module Exemptions

The Chartered Banker Institute (CBI) has recognised masters programmes offered by the School of Economics and Finance for advanced standing for the Chartered Banker Diploma. Graduates can proceed directly to the Chartered Banker Diploma with no requirement for prior underpinning study, recognising the high level of commonality of elements within LLM programme content against the CBI’s Diploma modules.

Students on the LLM programme who take both the QLLM136 Ethics in Business and in Finance and QLLM007 Banking Law modules will be eligible for exemption from the Chartered Banker Diploma compulsory module: Professionalism Regulation and Ethics.

The Certificate in Intellectual Property Law is designed exclusively for trainee patent and trade mark attorneys. It is a one-semester (13 week) course with a high concentration on many of the practical aspects of patents, trade marks and designs and greater involvement of patent and trade mark practitioners to complement the academic treatment of the subject matter.

Overview

Intellectual Property (IP) Law has become an interdisciplinary field comprised of law, engineering, medical science, economics, and numerous other fields. The Certificate in Intellectual Property Law is designed exclusively for trainee patent and trade mark attorneys. It is a one semester (13 week) course with a high concentration on many of the practical aspects of patents, trade marks and designs, and features greater involvement of patent and trade mark practitioners to complement the academic treatment of the subject matter. This course is approved by IPReg, CIPA and ITMA and is a recognised foundation exempting programme by these organisations.

The teaching term runs from 12 September or the first Monday following this date annually and finishes in mid-December. Exams run over two weeks in January annually.

This programme will:
◦Feature the involvement of patent and trade mark practitioners.
◦Offer you exemption from some professional exams. If you complete your examinations successfully, you will be exempt from the foundation level papers of the Joint Examination Board of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and three out of four of the foundation exams for the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys.

The Certificate in Intellectual Property Law is available to study over one semester (13 weeks).
Compulsory modules:

You must obtain 60 credits in total.
◦Copyright and designs (15 credits) examined by one 3hr 15 min exam.
◦Law of trade marks and unfair competition (15 credits) examined by one 2hr 30 min and one 3hr 15 min exam.

This programme is designed to equip students with a comprehensive and specialist education in a range of areas within International Intellectual Property Law. The course will enable students to master the basic principles of the four main ‘pillars’ of IP Law, namely, Copyright, Patents, Trade marks and Industrial Designs. The four main components of IP Law will be examined from three distinct perspectives: domestic (UK), EU and International (global treaties/conventions) and will encompass analysis of legislation, case law (common law and civil law) and specific legal concepts. Where possible, comparative analysis will be carried out as between for example, specific EU IP Law developments and those of third country States e.g. India, Pakistan and China. In addition, certain third countries with well-developed, mature IP systems (e.g. the U.S., Canada and Australia) will be examined for a comparative assessment. The distinct themes of how the Internet has brought about new thinking in the IP world and, possible overlapping forms of IP protection (e.g. copyright and patent protection of computer software) will be examined.

Through carefully designed course work and varied teaching approaches, students from both a common law and civil law background will acquire the intellectual open-ness, technical expertise and critical thinking abilities that are necessary for effectiveness in a globalising world. The programme will equip students to respond effectively to the wide range of intellectual and professional challenges facing contemporary intellectual property lawyers. The LLM in International Intellectual Property Law will equip them to deal with both case work and policy making.

Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities for graduates of the programme will include work with international law firms, patent and trade mark attorneys, local Intellectual Property Offices (e.g. the UK Intellectual Property Office, Chinese Patent and Trade Mark Office and the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks in India),international organisations such as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations and specialist bodies within the EU e.g. the Office for the Harmonisation of the Internal Market (OHIM) and the European Patent Office (EPO). for participants to acquire the skills needed to play a leading role in intellectual property rights (IPR) practice and teaching through exposure to an international and comparative approach.
The curriculum aims to provide an in-depth examination of the classical topics of IP law, as well as specialized analysis of the latest developments in the fields of patents, industrial design, integrated circuits, trademarks, domain names, copyright and related rights, biotechnological patents and plant varieties as well as the internet, software, databases and e-commerce.

The LL.M. is structured in three different phases stretching over 9 months, from June 2013 to February 2014.

The first phase - Distant learning

This initial stage provides the participants with a preliminary and homogeneous background. Three distance learning modules are offered from the beginning of June to the end of August. They are based on the successfully tested WIPO Academy “General Course on Intellectual Property” (DL-101), “IP and Electronic Commerce” (DL-202) and “Copyright and Related Rights”
(DL-203). The DL-101 has an online examination while the advanced courses will require of a written exam.

The second phase - residential part

It offers face-to-face classroom teaching, held at the International Training Centre of the ILO, in Torino from September to December.
Building on an introductory review of economic analysis of law, this phase analyzes IP protection both at a national and international level. Lectures will be offered by professors and tutors as well as IP experts. Participants will be required to make seminar-presentations. This provides for active interaction and participation among the students, tutors and the professors. Class teaching will be complemented by case-study sessions, experiments in legal drafting and submission of a first draft of a research paper. Three intermediate exams will be held during this phase of the program. The exam at the beginning of the second phase is intended to assess the level of knowledge attained by students during the first phase.

The third phase - submission of the thesis

This section stretches from December to February. Each participant will be required to submit the final version of the research paper initially presented during the second phase. Submission and grading of the final research will conclude the program.

A Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Intellectual Property will be awarded upon successful completion and fulfilment of the requirements of the program.
Study visits to IP offices in Torino and to other institutions, such as WIPO in Geneva (5 days) will be organized during the residentialphase of the Program. A number of participants, selected by the Scientific Committee of the Master's Program, will take part in an internship program at WIPO and in/or other public and private organizations, such as law firms and corporations active in the field of IP.

Coursework and assessment

This LLM has a compulsory research component, in which students have the option of choosing either to submit two research papers of 7,000-8,000 words each (and each of the value of 30 credits) or writing a 14,000 to 15,000 words dissertation (60 credits). If students choose the option of submitting two research papers, the first research paper must be within the area of a semester one course unit that you have chosen, and the second research paper must be within the area of a semester two course unit that you have chosen. The research element of the course is supported by weekly research methodology lectures delivered throughout semesters one and two designed to improve students' legal writing and research skills. Engineering courses within the Department are underpinned by research activities in aerospace engineering, automotive/motorsport engineering, solid and fluid mechanics, and energy and the environment. Staff generate numerous publications, conference presentations and patents, and have links with a wide range of institutions both within and outside the UK.

Mechanical engineers apply their scientific knowledge to solve problems and design machines that help us enjoy a better lifestyle. They have an enviable choice of industries open to them and this advanced course helps you develop the versatility to deal with complex challenges faced by senior engineers.

On this course you will:

Continue your professional development to Chartered Engineer status with confidence and acquire new skills at the highest level.

Brunel offer a number of mechanical engineering MSc courses, all accredited by professional institutes as appropriate additional academic study (further learning) for thos seeking to become qualified to register as Chartered Engineers (CEng).

Our collaborative research with numerous outside organisations includes major oil companies, vehicle manufacturers, and other leading industrial firms and governmental laboratories. We have links with at least six teaching hospitals and work with universities in China, Poland, Egypt, Turkey, Denmark, Japan, Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Italy and the US.

Accrediting professional institutes vary by course and include The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE),The Energy Institute (EI) and The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Course Content

During the first two terms (September - March) you will take eight modules, out of which:
Four are the same for both streams (compulsory modules - 15 credits each)
The other four (15 credits each) are different for the two streams.

In May the final examinations for the taught modules will take place and in their third term (June - September) students will complete the final dissertation.

You have the option to choose one of two specialisations, or ‘streams,’ for your dissertation:
Thermofluids, or
Solid Body Mechanics.

Excellent facilities
We have extensive and well-equipped laboratories, particular areas of strength being in fluid and biofluid mechanics, IC engines, vibrations, building service engineering, and structural testing. Our computing facilities are diverse and are readily available to all students

The University is fully networked with both Sun workstations and PCs. Advanced software is available for finite and boundary element modelling of structures, finite volume modelling of flows, and for the simulation of varied control systems, flow machines, combustion engines, suspensions, built environment, and other systems of interest to the research groups.

Accreditation

Advanced Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE). This will provide a route to Chartered Engineer status in the UK.

It provides international and comparative perspectives that cover not only traditional intellectual property issues like industrial property, artistic works and brands, but emerging areas of policy including the digital economy and biotechnology.

This programme reflects the growing importance of international developments in intellectual property, and confronts growing controversies such as the relationships between intellectual property and human rights norms, access to knowledge, new technologies and economic development.

You’ll explore the international norms and institutions relating to intellectual property such as the World Trade Organisation’s TRIPS Agreement, and consider the wider social and economic implications of intellectual property for health, culture, education, technology, innovation and economic development.
