Course Details

This Sustainable and Efficient Food Production postgraduate course centres on increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact within the extensive pasture-based production sector. The programme provides flexible, accessible, postgraduate level training for people employed in the agri-food sector. Training comprises distance learning modules and work-based research projects. Taught by experts at both Aberystwyth University (AU) and Bangor University (BU) through the Advanced Training Partnership (ATP), the Sustainable and Efficient Food Production course offers you a highly vocational option. In the most recent joint submission to the Research Excellence Framework assessment (2014), the department was placed in the top 10 universities in the UK for research intensity and 78% of our research was world-leading or internationally excellent.

To achieve an MSc students must complete five optional modules (including up to three from BU) plus Research Methodology and Advances in Biosciences and a Dissertation.

Optional modules include: Ruminant Nutrition, Improved Silage, Improving Ruminant Production, Sustainable Home-grown Feed, Ruminant Gut Microbiology, Low Input Ruminant Production, Ruminant Health and Welfare, Upland Farming Systems, Soil Management, Sustainable Grassland Systems, Carbon Footprinting and Lifecycle Analysis, Ruminant Health and Welfare, Agricultural Genetics and Genomics, Resource Efficient Farming, Anaerobic Digestion*, and Ecosystem Services

Format

Key information:

- Two to five years to complete a full MSc.
- 14 weeks for one module by distance learning.
- Three intakes per year (January, May, September).

Our distance learning modules are designed to be flexible so that you can fit studying around your work and other commitments. A typical Masters student is expected to study for 200 hours when taking a 20 credit module. As a rule of thumb you should anticipate spending approximately 2-3 hours a week on online lectures, presentations and podcasts, and the remaining time on readings and assignments; the more time and effort you can put in, the more you'll benefit from studying the module and the better your grades are likely to be.

We have designed our training to be as accessible as possible, particularly for those in full time employment. Each topic comprises a 12-14 week distance learning module worth 20 credits which can be taken for your own continuing professional development or interest; or built towards a postgraduate qualification. The research elements of our qualifications are carried out in your work place with regular academic supervision. The training is web-based which means that as long as you have access to a reasonable broadband connection (i.e. are able to stream videos such as on YouTube), you can study where and when best suits you. Learning material includes podcast lectures, e-group projects, guided reading, interactive workbooks and discussion forums, as well as assignments and e-tutorials. By signing a re-registration form each year you will have access to e-journals and library resources for the full five years.

World populations and economies are rapidly increasing their demands for food and fibre. At the same time, agricultural systems are being placed under pressure to meet environmental, social and economic goals. To meet these goals and to maintain or increase production levels, an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems is required.

Course description, features and facilities

Australian agriculture is a key part of the world's food supply system. The challenges of a rapidly growing population, climate change, and the limitations of land and fresh water all impact on the ability of agriculture to meet the demand for food, fibre and fuel. To address this demand, an understanding of the complex factors that shape agricultural systems is necessary.


Agricultural Science provides the research, technology and information for the sustainable, profitable and ethical development of the agricultural industry. Studies in agriculture include soil science, genetics, cropping and pasture systems, soil-plant interaction, livestock production, agricultural economics and agribusiness.


UWA is well equipped for teaching and research in agricultural science, with a field station at Shenton Park and the University's new research farm near Pingelly, which aims to be self-supporting, sustainable, carbon-neutral, clean, green and ethical – a best practice farm.

Teaching in agricultural science is also supported by the outstanding research and outreach activities of the Institute of Agriculture, the Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA), the International Centre for Plant Breeding Education and Research (ICPBER) and the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative (AHRI).

Structure

The Master of Agricultural Science is offered by coursework or coursework and dissertation.

While the standard timeframe for completion of this degree is two years' (full time), if you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate (related) area it may be possible to complete within 1.5 years'.

The course offers a focused, advanced learning experience that will enhance career choices. You must complete all core units and specialisation core units. This degree also provides the flexibility to choose from a range of units to complement your specific interests.

Course structures for the master's degrees with the new 1.5 to 2 years' structure (72 to 96 points) are now available via the UWA Handbook.

Career opportunities

This course prepares students with the knowledge and skills they need for a future in the rapidly evolving field of agricultural science. There is a shortage of agricultural science graduates and career opportunities range from the laboratory to the field, from the city to rural areas, as breeders, agronomists, farm managers, market development officers, journalists and bankers.

Graduates are employed as consultants, managers or researchers, by government agencies, universities, consulting firms, food industries, fertiliser companies, and international agencies.

This course will provide you with the skills to pursue a career in agricultural research and development. Graduates may also find work as consultants and advisers to the livestock and cropping industries in Mediterranean environments around the world.

You will cover science and technology for crop, pasture and livestock production (including the roles of genetics and management in achieving optimum production against environmental constraints), and their integration into viable farming systems.

You will place special emphasis on emerging technologies for precise management of crops and livestock, and their role in ensuring safe, sustainable production systems. In your second year, you will undertake supervised research into a current and emerging industry problem. Intensive study periods may also be available over the summer or vacation periods.

Career opportunities

This qualification will provide you with the skills to pursue a career in agricultural research and development, and as consultants/advisors to the livestock and cropping industries in Mediterranean environments around the world. Employers are likely to include Government and private research organisations, agricultural consultancy groups, and individual growers and grower groups.

The Master of Agricultural Science with a specialisation in Agricultural Systems will provide students with an in-depth understanding of agricultural systems designed for crop, pasture and animal production in a profitable and sustainable way by applying biological and other scientific knowledge.Integration and planning within and across years is considered within an integrated systems approach to resource management. In the first academic year of the MSc. Program the students of the 3 main subjects have several courses in common, aiming in giving them all an in-depth knowledge and know-how related to nutrition and rural development related topics, creating a common academic level between all program students of diverse backgrounds. The common part of the programme consists on the one hand of basic knowledge, insights and skills in the areas of production, transformation, preservation, marketing and consumption of food products. On the other hand, it contains a practically oriented component that enables the alumni to identify problems by means of quantitative and qualitative research methods and analytical techniques, to assess and rank causes, and to plan, to execute and to evaluate appropriate interventions.

The other part of courses given during the first year are main subject specific courses. The academic second year provides a more in depth understanding of the specific problems and their solutions for the main subject and major chosen and consists of main subject and major specific courses, elective (optional) courses and Master Dissertation research (30 ECTS).

The specific expertise the students receive depends on the main subject, major and optional courses chosen.

Tropical Agriculture

Delivers technical knowledge related to agriculture focussing on developing countries. The students can specialize in animal production or plant production by choosing the specific option. The major on Animal Production delivers in depth knowledge on production biology, animal nutrition, pasture management, animal genetics. The major on Plant Production focuses on themes like ethno-botany, crop protection, plant breeding, plant biotechnology. The courses are applicative and aim at presenting solutions for production problems in developing countries in an interdisciplinary way.

-Fundamental, in depth and high level knowledge.
Semester 2 (Febr-June)

Have thorough knowledge and comprehension (theory and practice) l in the interdisciplinary domains: food and feed production, socio-economic, (public health) nutrition and management concepts, theories and skills, and in the main subject specific domains and the chosen major domains. Apply theories and methodological approaches to characterize and analyse specific problems: food, nutrition and agricultural chains, food sovereignty /safety and security, natural resource management, sustainable production, economic and social problems of rural areas, national and international agriculture.

Design and implement adequate instruments, methods, models and innovative tools to analyse, evaluate and solve interdisciplinary related problems in the context of sustainable development.

Apply the interdisciplinary tools to design, implement, monitor and evaluate national and international agro-nutrition policies and programs. More specifically:
-For Human Nutrition: construct innovative tools and instruments for the development of a better nutritional health status of a country/region/area and its inhabitants/households.
-For Tropical agriculture: a more efficient and economic feasible agricultural balanced, food production guaranteeing a better food security situation per country respecting local environment.

Assess the importance and magnitude of a problem, define strategies for intervention and/or identify knowledge gaps. Develop a research protocol based on the analysis of existing evidence and set up a research plan, analyse and interpret the data and present the findings.

Identify, select and apply appropriate research methods and techniques to collect, analyses and critically interpret data.

Critically reflect on program specific issues, and on ethical and value driven aspects of research and intervention strategies.

Take up a trans-disciplinary role in an interdisciplinary ((inter)national) team dealing with global challenges, and develop a global perspective.

The Master of Science in Horse Science at MTSU centers on a curriculum designed to prepare graduates for the multi-faceted equine industry. Programs are tailored to students’ interests and produce graduates able to adapt to and thrive in this dynamic field. Students may choose from Equine Education, Equine Physiology or Industry Management concentrations. Only the top qualified applicants are invited for an interview at the applicant’s expense, prior to final acceptance into the program. Faculty members mentor students in curriculum development and provide training in scientific methods, principles of equine student education and instruction, and general industry practices. All M.S. degree candidates share a common core of coursework in statistics, research methods, and multiple disciplines in horse science and animal science. A significant number of elective credit hours are available, permitting each student to customize the program with courses in other departments. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships are available.

Degrees

The Master of Science in Horse Science is offered with three concentrations:

Equine Education includes interdisciplinary courses in coaching and sports management to strengthen knowledge for careers as collegiate riding instructors, equestrian team coaches, horse judging team coaches, or agents for the Cooperative Extension Service.

Equine Physiology emphasizes an interdisciplinary, science-based curriculum structured to build knowledge of scientific principles and apply these principles to a thesis research project related to equine science. Students successfully completing the concentration are prepared for admission into an animal science or equine science Ph.D. program. Students entering this concentration must have a strong foundation in undergraduate biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry.

Industry Management allows students to complete interdisciplinary courses in business management, marketing, and/or sports management to tailor their curriculum for specific industry-related careers.

Equine Education or Industry Management students may choose a research-based thesis or a non-thesis equine experiential learning option. Equine Physiology students must complete a research-based thesis.

The selection procedure is a two-phase process. Based on a review of applications to the M.S. Horse Science program, qualified students are invited for an interview at their expense. Not all applicants are invited for the personal interview.
