Who is it for?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Child Nursing prepares you for a fulfilling and rewarding career caring for children, and their parents, at different stages of the developmental spectrum who have had injuries, suffered accidents, acquired disease or have a range of healthcare needs.

Children’s nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession. As a child nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care and compassion. You will learn the skills of clinical decision-making that is supported by knowledge and experience of providing healthcare to a diverse population.

The course combines theoretical study with clinical experience gained at London’s leading hospitals, trusts and community settings. The School's facilities feature an excellent Clinical Skills Centre, including a simulated wards, where you can prepare for your practice experience. Whilst on clinical placements you will also benefit from exposure to the capital’s diverse population.

Placements

Half of your time as a student will be spent gaining practice experience through laboratory-based simulated practice and through clinical placements in health care settings.

Simulated Practice

Simulated practice is a significant component of your practice learning experience and will provide opportunities for you to rehearse a range of practical nursing skills and enact scenarios in a realistic, but safe simulated environment in our excellent clinical laboratories.

You will be encouraged to explore, experiment and engage in nursing activities with the lecturers. The sessions will help you to understand the rationale and evidence that you will need so you feel safe when providing hands-on care. Through this experience you will develop confidence as you prepare for your practice experience and gain a sense of purpose and belonging to the nursing profession.

Clinical Placements

Clinical placements can take place in a variety of settings such as:
-General Practice (GP) surgeries
-Nurseries
-Special schools
-NHS and independent sector hospitals
-Patients' homes and in community settings.

Placements take place within City's partnership of healthcare providers in Central and North East London who provide you with clinical placements, including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and North Middlesex HNS Trust.

This allows you to become familiar with the needs of local communities and its healthcare providers. Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Facilities at City include the excellent fully equipped Clinical Skills Centre in addition to an interactive Biological Sciences Laboratory.

Many of the clinical practice placements offer the opportunity for students to experience environments where clinical diagnostic tests are performed and in addition operating theatres where surgical procedures are carried out.

Teaching and learning

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM132 Experiencing Acute Care, Diagnostics and Treatment (Theory)
-HSM201 Engaging in Practice 2 (Practice)
-HSM043 Experiencing Long Term Care, Rehabilitation and Recovery (Theory)

Part Three is 27 weeks and focuses on the development of leaders and managers of care. This part includes the following modules:

-HSM301 Engaging in Practice 3 (Practice)
Depending on the RPL Practice claim submitted by students there is a further 500 hours of clinical practice to be completed.

Holidays are not included in the above hours and all modules are compulsory.

Structure

This is a one year full time MSc course beginning with a taught section worth 120 credits. The Autumn and Spring semesters utilise taught and research project based material to enable you to progress from a typical bachelor graduate standard at entry to the master’s level. The eight taught optional modules are split between these semesters to provide eighty credits of masters level study. Two twenty credit Case Study modules form both group (semester 1) and individual (semester 2) activities. This prepares you for the third section of the course where you will use your advanced skills to complete an in-depth project and prepare a dissertation in the field of Advanced Mechanical Engineering. The project and dissertation stage of your course are worth a further 60 credits.

A 10-credit module typically represents 100 hours of study in total. This may involve 24–36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. The remaining hours are intended to be for private study, coursework, revision and assessment: all students are expected to spend a significant amount of time (typically 20 hours each week) studying independently. Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles and mechanisms will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme. You will be expected to attend lectures and participate in tutorial classes. All students must complete 120 credits in Stage 1 in order to progress to the dissertation, for which they are allocated a supervisor from among the teaching staff. Dissertation topics are normally chosen from a range of project titles proposed by academic staff, usually in areas of current research interest, although you are encouraged to put forward your own project ideas.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the classroom based modules is assessed by University examinations set in January and May/June. Predominantly examination-based assessment will be deployed in eight modules (80 credits) taken in Stage 1 of the programme. The balance between examination and coursework depends upon the modules selected, with the equivalent of up to six credits being available in coursework elements in individual modules, in addition to two double module (40-credit) case studies.

Award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the Dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher. Candidates achieving a 70% average may be awarded a Distinction. Candidates achieving a 60% average may be awarded a Merit. Candidates failing to qualify for an MSc may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Higher Education for 120 credits in Stage 1. Candidates failing to complete the 120 credits required for Stage 1 may still be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education for the achievement of at least 60 credits.

Career prospects

The course provides master’s level training to the standard necessary to practice as a chartered professional mechanical engineer. When you graduate you will be equipped to apply for management level roles across a broad spectrum of mechanical and related engineering fields. The course focuses on various aspects of maritime law, from the different contracts for the carriage of goods to marine insurance, international trade and law of the sea.

The International Careers Adviser at Swansea runs weekly workshops for international students for example, on how to improve career prospects and improve interview techniques. The Postgraduate Department also employs two dedicated LLM employability officers who run a series of talks to develop the skills of LLM students and inform their career plans.

The Department also enjoys close links with many City law firms. For example, one of our professors on the LLM programme was a senior partner, and is now a consultant with, Ince & Co, a leading London law firm, specialising in international trade, insurance and shipping law. The ISTLprovides training programmes for London City solicitors, P & I Clubs and shipping organisations. The Swansea LLM is well known internationally. Many of our graduates secure employment shortly after completing their degrees. Several international firms keep a close relationship with the Department of Shipping and Trade Law and regularly send representatives for guest lectures and graduate recruitment purposes. - Students with a background in psychology seeking to gain knowledge of meditation and mindfulness for their clinical work.

- Students planning to pursue further research which may involve, at a subsequent stage, the acquisition of a doctoral degree and a career in higher education.

- Students seeking to pursue a career or professional activity for which advanced knowledge of the yoga and meditation traditions of Asia is required.

- Students who wish to pursue the academic study of these traditions as a complement to their personal experience.

This MA offers an in-depth introduction to the yogic and meditational techniques and doctrines of India, Tibet, China and Japan within the historical and cultural context of their formation. Furthermore, it explores the nature of spiritual experience that arises from yoga and meditation through a cross-cultural, inter-regional perspective.

Classes are held three evenings per week with Full-time and Part-time Study Available.

The thematic, but inter-regional, focus of this MA programme promotes the academic study of the different traditions through the deployment of a wide range of regional perspectives. Its core unit explores the methodological foundations at the heart of yoga/meditation practice. The specialist components integrated within this MA are organised to serve as platform for further (MPhil/PhD) graduate research; the more general components of the programme provides those students who do not intend to pursue doctoral research with an advanced introduction to the physiological dynamics, doctrinal foundations, history, regional context and theoretical presuppositions that shaped the traditions of yoga and meditation. The programme thus offers students (a) advanced knowledge of the background to, and understanding of, yoga and meditation, from their origin in ancient India to their apex in mediaeval Japan; (b) advanced skills in research and writing on topics that pertain to yoga/meditation, drawing on both primary sources (in translation) and secondary sources; (c) advanced skills in presentation and communication of their knowledge of the topics covered in the lectures.

This MA is taught through evening classes, typically running between 18.00h and 20.00h on weekdays, at the SOAS Russell Square Campus in Central London.

Students are required to follow taught units to the equivalent of three full courses and to submit a dissertation of 10,000 words. All courses in this MA are assessed through a combination of short and long essays. An overall percentage mark is awarded for each course, based on the marks awarded for individual assessment items within the course. The MA may be awarded at Distinction, Merit or Pass level in accordance with the common regulations for MA/MSc at SOAS.

The MA ‘Traditions of Yoga and Meditation’ is designed both as an end qualification in itself and as a platform preparing students for more advanced graduate work.

Assessment

On a weekly basis, you will receive feedback via the discussion board per each discussion thread. Participation on taught modules is a pre-requisite for sitting the final assessment. Participation is mandatory and is therefore assessed as a pass/fail summative assessment. The activity requiring participation may vary from module to module, however, a standard will be maintained across all modules. For instance, if a module requires participation vis-à-vis posting messages/responses on a module discussion board and there are eight weekly opportunities to do so, you will be required to submit four posts (50%) for assessment. Each post must be sufficient in length (i.e. approximately 500 words). You are expected to participate in all online activities.

Summative assessment of the taught modules that comprise the degree will be by coursework only (3,500 words). Modules

The distance learning LLM in International Business Law programme consists of taught modules of 150 credits (five modules at 30 credits each) and a compulsory Dissertation module of 30 credits.

In the first academic term, all students are required to take the Core module, Foundations of Law in International Business (30 credits). Upon successful completion of the Core module, you will select any further four taught modules from the range of available subjects. Students are free to take one or two modules each academic term.

All modules run over a period of 10 weeks (10 units). Each module requires approximately 300 hours of study and students will normally spend between 25 and 30 hours a week on each module, comprised mainly of self-directed and on-line hours. Typically, once all taught modules have been successfully completed, students proceed to the Dissertation (30 credits).

Elective modules - the elective modules will draw from a variety of sources of law, including laws from different systems of law (European Union Law, international law and the English common law) to make your learning experience more rewarding. Stream overview

This course is a stream within the broader MRes in Biomedical Research.

The Data Science stream provides an interdisciplinary training in analysis of ‘big data’ from modern high throughput biomolecular studies. This is achieved through a core training in multivariate statistics, chemometrics and machine learning methods, along with research experience in the development and application of these methods to real world biomedical studies. There is an emphasis on handling large-scale data from molecular phenotyping techniques such as metabolic profiling and related genomics approaches. Like the other MRes streams, this course exposes students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects of 20 weeks each, supplemented by lectures, workshops and journal clubs. The stream is based in the Division of Computational and Systems Medicine and benefits from close links with large facilities such as the MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre, the MRC Clinical Phenotyping Centre and the Centre for Systems Oncology. The Data Science stream is developed in collaboration with Imperial’s Data Science Institute.

Who is this course for?

Students with a degree in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics computer science (or related area) who wish to apply their numeric skills to solve biomedical problems with big data.

Stream Objectives

Students will gain experience in analysing and modelling big data from technologically advanced techniques applied to biomedical questions. Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Perform novel computational informatics research and exercise critical scientific thought in the interpretation of results.

• Implement and apply sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques in the interrogation of large and complex

biomedical data sets.

• Understand the cutting edge technologies used to conduct molecular phenotyping studies on a large scale.

• Interpret and present complex scientific data from multiple sources.

• Mine the scientific literature for relevant information and develop research plans.

• Write a grant application, through the taught grant-writing exercise common to all MRes streams.

• Write and defend research reports through writing, poster presentations and seminars.

• Exercise a range of transferable skills by taking short courses taught through the Graduate School and the core programme of the

MRes Biomedical Research degree.

A wide range of research projects is made available to students twice a year. The projects available to each student are determined by their stream. Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles are used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme. You will be required to attend lecture-, lab- and tutorial-based study during the semesters, and later undertake an individual research project.

While a 10-credit module represents 100 hours of study in total, typically this will involve 24–36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. The remaining hours are intended to be for private study, coursework, revision and assessment. Therefore all students are expected to spend a significant amount of time (typically 20 hours each week) studying independently.

At the beginning of Stage 2, you will be allocated a project supervisor. Dissertation topics are normally chosen from a range of project titles proposed by academic staff in consultation with industrial partners, usually in areas of current research or industrial interest. You are also encouraged to put forward your own project ideas.

Learning Central, the Cardiff University virtual learning environment (VLE), will be used extensively to communicate with students, support lectures and provide general programme materials such as reading lists and module descriptions. It may also be used to provide self-testing assessment and give feedback.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the majority of modules is assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, plus University examinations set in January or May. Examinations count for a third to a half of assessment in Stage 1 of the programme, depending on the options chosen, the remainder being largely project work and pieces of coursework.

Award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the Dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher. Candidates achieving 60% may be awarded a Merit and for those achieving a 70% average a Distinction may be awarded. Candidates failing to qualify for an MSc may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Higher Education for 120 credits in Stage 1. Candidates failing to complete the 120 credits required for Stage 1 may still be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Higher Education for the achievement of at least 60 credits.

Career prospects

Graduates typically gain employment in large energy-focussed companies, the public sector, consultancies, research and development, or set up their own companies. A number also go on to undertake PhD study.

Teaching and learning

Diverse teaching methods (predominantly two hour lectures and one-and-a-half hour workshops) are employed throughout the GDL programme in order to give you the best opportunity to acquire legal knowledge and skills.

Practical skills

- Mooting
Mooting is a must on the CV of any aspiring barrister, and for many aspiring solicitors. Mooting gives you the chance to test your advocacy skills in a safe but exciting environment, and the opportunity to hear other students argue and learn from the questioning of the judges.
The School of Law runs a mooting competition each year and enters its champion mooting team into the English Speaking Union/Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition. In 2012 the Oxford Brookes GDL Mooting Team won the national final of the English Speaking Union/Essex Court National Mooting Competition, and went on to win the Commonwealth Mooting Championship in Cape Town in April 2013.

- Client Interviewing
Client interviewing is one of the key skills which every lawyer needs. GDL students, coached by members of staff, have the opportunity to take part in an annual internal Client Interviewing Competition here at Oxford Brookes.

The winners of the internal competition go on to take part in the regional and national finals of the Client Interviewing Competition of England and Wales. The winning team from the national finals has the opportunity to go forward to the International Client Consultation Competition which is hosted internationally and which includes students from around the world.

In recent years Brookes GDL students have had great success in the National Client Interviewing Competition. They achieved third place in the National Final in both 2009 and 2011, and won the National Final in 2010, going on to be overall runners-up in the International Client Consultation Competition 2010 in Hong Kong. In 2012 the Brookes student team were overall runners-up in the national final and won the trophy for best GDL team.

- Pro Bono Activity
Pro Bono offers students a valuable introduction to the world of legal practice, and involvement in pro bono work helps to demonstrate to potential employers a student's commitment to the law.

Students wishing to be involved in pro bono work can do so through our established pro bono scheme, winner of the Solicitors Pro Bono group national award.

In 2010 and 2013, GDL students were shortlisted for the Attorney General's National Student Pro Bono Awards for 'Best Contribution by an Individual Student' and attended the awards ceremonies at the houses of parliament.

Research highlights

There is a wide range of research interests among staff, with particular strengths in the areas of public law, international law and human rights, employment, religion and the law, criminal justice, and IT and the law. In the latest government research rating exercise, the 2014 REF, 85% of staff research output is internationally recognised.

Professor Peter Edge researches in the interaction of religion and law, and the law of small jurisdictions including International Finance Centres. Recent projects exploring these at the transnational level have included a study of foreign lawyers working in small jurisdictions, and a comparative study of the status of ministers of religion in employment law. Past PhD students have worked on projects such as a comparison of the European Convention on Human Rights and Shariah, and a comparative study of how criminal law treats religion.

Professor Lucy Vickers’ research into the religious discrimination at work has led to consultancy work for Equality and Human Rights Commission, as well invitations to speak at United Nations with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief.

Sonia Morano-Foadi, interviewed and quoted in The Economist, secured £12,000 from the European Science Foundation to fund exploratory work into the effects of EU directives on migration and asylum.

Professor Ilona Cheyne has been invited to participate in the EU COST group on 'Fragmentation, Politicisation and Constitutionalisation of International Law', working on standards of review in international courts and tribunals.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Teaching involves a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and integration of consultancy with industry, and assessment is continuous. Theory underpinning practice is developed simultaneously throughout each semester and Negotiated Agreements Parts I and II allow students to acquire the ability to develop and refine proposals, which underpin their major projects, and reflect on personal progress. Students are expected to contextualize their work within a current framework, and develop evaluative skills in order to articulate their point of view. Research Methods and Application introduces students to a range of analytical research tools, forming the basis for all in-depth self-directed projects on the programme.

The course is available in two modes: Full and part-time. Full-time is delivered over a three semester block; part-time is delivered over a five-semester block and is subject to student numbers. It is expected that students will call upon a range of opportunities and influences to inform their own study and their personal proposals. Students are given the opportunity of selecting to opt for a discrete dissertation together with a separately identified major project or to combine their practical conclusions with a substantial body of theoretical underpinning.

The course aims to develop students’ intellectual and imaginative power through a programme of study that is formed from cohesion between theory and practice. It provides graduates with a stimulating environment in which ideas can be exchanged and supported through factual creative research, developed and contextualised. Careers & Employability

The International Careers Adviser at Swansea runs weekly workshops for international students, for example, on how to improve career prospects and improve interview techniques. The Postgraduate Department also employs two dedicated LLM employability officers who run a series of talks to develop the skills of LLM students and inform their career plans.

The Department also enjoys close links with many City law firms. For example, one of our professors on the LLM programme was a senior partner, and is now a consultant with, Ince & Co, a leading London law firm, specialising in international trade, insurance and shipping law. The IISTL provides training programmes for London City solicitors, P&I Clubs and shipping organisations. Many of our graduates secure employment shortly after completing their degrees. Several international firms keep a close relationship with the Shipping and Trade Law Department and regularly send representatives for guest lectures and graduate recruitment purposes. Also every year the Department hosts the LLM Careers Fair which is attended by representatives from a wide range of local and international organisations.
