Electrical power systems are playing a pivotal role in the development of a sustainable energy supply, enabling renewable energy generation. Globally there is a big shortage of skilled engineers for designing, operating, controlling and the economic analysis of future electricity networks – smart grids

The new 2-year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will give you the timely advanced skills and specialist experience required to significantly enhance your career in the electrical power industry. The programme builds on a very close involvement with the power industry, the education of power engineers and extensive research work and expertise as well as the successful experience on the 1-year MSc Electrical Power Systems at the University of Birmingham. The 2-year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will be able to fill in the gap of skills between the 1-year MSc and PhD research.

Some modules will be taught by leading industry experts, which will give you the exciting opportunity to understand the real challenges that power industry is facing, hence propose innovative solutions. In addition, students working on relevant MSc projects may have the opportunity to work with leading industry experts directly. 

The new 2-Year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will run in parallel with the existing 1-Year MSc Electrical Power Systems. The taught credits in the 1st year of the 2 Year MSc are identical to that of the 1-Year MSc while the 2nd Year is mainly focused on a research project. 

This programme also aims to provide graduates with the ability to critically evaluate methodologies, analytical procedures and advanced research methods. Year 1 of the programme is focussed on the taught modules covering:

  • Control concepts and methods
  • Advanced energy conversion systems and power electronic applications
  • Advanced power electronic technologies for electrical power networks – HVDC and FACTS
  • Electrical power system engineering - using state-of-the-art computational tools and methods, and design of sustainable electrical power systems and networks
  • Economic analysis of electrical power systems and electricity markets. 

While Year 2 of the programme will give you the opportunity to work on an advanced research project. For some suitable projects, in conjunction with joint industry supervisions, industry placement may be available.

It is envisaged there will be the opportunity for students to transfer between the two programmes using the University’s procedures for transfers between programmes, subject to programme requirements. This opportunity would take place at the end of the taught part of the programme.

Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research Masters/MSc (Two Year): 

This 2-year MSc programme meets the industrial demand for the training and education of both existing and future engineers in the advanced concepts of electrical power systems and renewable energy as well as advanced research skills. It aims to produce graduates of the highest calibre with the right advanced skills and knowledge who will be capable of leading in teams involved in the operation, control, design, and economic analysis of the electrical power systems and networks of the future – smart grids as well as developing and managing R&D programmes.

It will meet the demand for the research and development of sustainable electrical power systems and the demand for training and education of existing and future power engineers in the advanced concepts and designing of sustainable electrical power systems and renewable energy with significant research training.

Patterns of study 

The majority of students study our Masters programmes full time. Our programmes are also suitable for practising engineers who wish to study part-time or take a single module to earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Many modules are completed in three-day sessions allowing you to focus on one topic at a time. Following each session of lectures there is an opportunity for you to deepen your understanding through private study and in most cases there is also an assessed assignment. 

Core modules 

These modules cover the advanced specialist topics required for your specific degree programme, such as Power System Operation and Control, HVDC and FACTS and Power System Economics. These technologies are at the heart of many current developments in electrical power systems. 

Cross-programme option modules 

These options specialize in topics relevant to each degree programme and give you the opportunity to adapt the programme that you have chosen to study. The prior knowledge needed for each module is specified in the student handbook to help you make the most appropriate choice. This allows you the greatest possible freedom to customise your study package appropriately. 

Individual project 

In Year 2, you will have 12-months to work on a dedicated research project to develop your comprehensive research skills, which would be helpful to fill in the gap between the 1-year MSc and PhD. This is an opportunity for you to develop advanced specialist knowledge. Some projects are undertaken in collaboration with companies and, in some cases, you may work on company premises investigating issues of direct concern to future product development. 

Assessment and awards 

Assessment is by a combination of written examination and course work. There is a strong emphasis on course work to deepen understanding. The pass mark is 50%. A merit is awarded to students with an average of 60% or more and a distinction is awarded to students with an average of 70% or more, in both taught and project modules. There are prizes for students who perform especially well overall and for those who complete exceptionally good individual projects.

Stream overview

This course is a stream within the broader MRes in Biomedical Research.

The Data Science stream provides an interdisciplinary training in analysis of ‘big data’ from modern high throughput biomolecular studies. This is achieved through a core training in multivariate statistics, chemometrics and machine learning methods, along with research experience in the development and application of these methods to real world biomedical studies. There is an emphasis on handling large-scale data from molecular phenotyping techniques such as metabolic profiling and related genomics approaches. Like the other MRes streams, this course exposes students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects of 20 weeks each, supplemented by lectures, workshops and journal clubs. The stream is based in the Division of Computational and Systems Medicine and benefits from close links with large facilities such as the MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre, the MRC Clinical Phenotyping Centre and the Centre for Systems Oncology. The Data Science stream is developed in collaboration with Imperial’s Data Science Institute.

Who is this course for?

Students with a degree in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics computer science (or related area) who wish to apply their numeric skills to solve biomedical problems with big data.

Stream Objectives

Students will gain experience in analysing and modelling big data from technologically advanced techniques applied to biomedical questions. Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Perform novel computational informatics research and exercise critical scientific thought in the interpretation of results.

• Implement and apply sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques in the interrogation of large and complex

biomedical data sets.

• Understand the cutting edge technologies used to conduct molecular phenotyping studies on a large scale.

• Interpret and present complex scientific data from multiple sources.

• Mine the scientific literature for relevant information and develop research plans.

• Write a grant application, through the taught grant-writing exercise common to all MRes streams.

• Write and defend research reports through writing, poster presentations and seminars.

• Exercise a range of transferable skills by taking short courses taught through the Graduate School and the core programme of the

A wide range of research projects is made available to students twice a year. The projects available to each student are determined by their stream. The Psychosexual Therapy course will be delivered by practitioners who have a wealth of psychosexual experience between them. This is currently the most northerly psychosexual course available within the UK.

You’ll be required to take three theoretical modules in year 1, that will prepare you for the practitioner module and you will also need to complete a minimum of 120 hours client work across one academic year. In years 3 & 4 you will undertake a robust piece of empirical research and potentially complete the requisite number of hours for COSRT Psychotherapist Accreditation.

The course takes a Psycho-Bio-Medical Approach to the field of Psychosexual Medicine You will be introduced to the course and basic sexual and relationship theory. You will then study Relationships: Models and Interventions; and Diversity of Psychosexual Needs before taking the Psychosexual Practitioner module that is delivered over one academic year. You’ll also be required to complete an Introduction to Postgraduate Research module. The second year is closely linked to the practice of psychosexual therapy for which you will take a year-long placement in a psychosexual therapy clinic close to your area of employment.

For students who complete the MSc, are successful in completing COSRT accreditation, and who meet UKCP’s further requirements, may be eligible for UKCP registration.

FURTHER INFORMATION

As part of this course you will be required to become student members of COSRT and will therefore receive regular updates with regards to possible employment psychosexual opportunities throughout the UK. In addition, your placement will give you the opportunity to experience a working NHS psychosexual clinic.

Previous graduates of this type of course have advanced to become medical consultants within the NHS, or General Practitioners; within nursing to advance to become specialist nurse practitioners and nurse consultants; within Counselling & Psychotherapy to become consultant psychosexual therapists and to then move into teaching.

To progress onto the MSc from the PGCert students must pass an interview and receive a satisfactory status with a DBS Check. The placement in the second year will give students a wonderful opportunity to experience psychosexual therapy in practice and will also have the opportunity to learn from the required supervision which currently stands at 1.5 hours supervision for every 6 hours client work.

All immediate teaching staff involved with this course were trained on the fore-runner to this programme when it ran at UCLan until 2006 and each achieved a minimum of a pass with Merit. Peter Cardew currently works as a consultant psychosexual therapist in Manchester; Dr Karl Hollows is a Clinical Specialist in Stafford; Janice Lamb now works as a Psychosexual Therapist for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Carole Roberts is now Principal Psychosexual Therapist and Service Lead Psychosexual Service - SHARE – (Sexual Help & Relationship Enhancement) Community Health Services Division, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

OPPORTUNITIES

Students will have the opportunity to undertake a psychosexual placement within an existing NHS Psychosexual Therapy service although students (mainly doctors) who choose to undertake their practice within an existing service will have on going support provided by the university via placement audits and personal tutor support. Within the psychosexual placement you will receive on-going supervisory support in the ration of 1.5 hours supervision/6 hours of client therapy.

In terms of possible career paths, successful graduates will be eligible to apply for positions as a qualified Psychosexual Therapist and to work towards the completion of COSRT/UKCP Accreditation.

Graduates of this programme may wish to progress further onto research-based academic qualifications (e.g. MPhil/PhD).

Structure

This is a one year full time MSc course beginning with a taught section worth 120 credits. The Autumn and Spring semesters utilise taught and research project based material to enable you to progress from a typical bachelor graduate standard at entry to the master’s level. The eight taught optional modules are split between these semesters to provide eighty credits of masters level study. Two twenty credit Case Study modules form both group (semester 1) and individual (semester 2) activities. This prepares you for the third section of the course where you will use your advanced skills to complete an in-depth project and prepare a dissertation in the field of Advanced Mechanical Engineering. The project and dissertation stage of your course are worth a further 60 credits.

A 10-credit module typically represents 100 hours of study in total. This may involve 24–36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. The remaining hours are intended to be for private study, coursework, revision and assessment: all students are expected to spend a significant amount of time (typically 20 hours each week) studying independently. Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles and mechanisms will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme. You will be expected to attend lectures and participate in tutorial classes. All students must complete 120 credits in Stage 1 in order to progress to the dissertation, for which they are allocated a supervisor from among the teaching staff. Dissertation topics are normally chosen from a range of project titles proposed by academic staff, usually in areas of current research interest, although you are encouraged to put forward your own project ideas.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the classroom based modules is assessed by University examinations set in January and May/June. Predominantly examination-based assessment will be deployed in eight modules (80 credits) taken in Stage 1 of the programme. Award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the Dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher. Candidates achieving a 70% average may be awarded a Distinction. Candidates achieving a 60% average may be awarded a Merit. Candidates failing to qualify for an MSc may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma of Higher Education for 120 credits in Stage 1. Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship-centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice.

The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme with students expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

All modules are compulsory.

Career prospects are excellent with Postgraduate Diploma students securing employment as Band 5 Staff Nurses with Trusts including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust.

- Experienced practitioners of yoga and meditation who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural contexts that shaped their traditions.

- Students with a background in psychology seeking to gain knowledge of meditation and mindfulness for their clinical work.

- Students planning to pursue further research which may involve, at a subsequent stage, the acquisition of a doctoral degree and a career in higher education.

- Students seeking to pursue a career or professional activity for which advanced knowledge of the yoga and meditation traditions of Asia is required.

- Students who wish to pursue the academic study of these traditions as a complement to their personal experience.

This MA offers an in-depth introduction to the yogic and meditational techniques and doctrines of India, Tibet, China and Japan within the historical and cultural context of their formation. Furthermore, it explores the nature of spiritual experience that arises from yoga and meditation through a cross-cultural, inter-regional perspective.

The thematic, but inter-regional, focus of this MA programme promotes the academic study of the different traditions through the deployment of a wide range of regional perspectives. Its core unit explores the methodological foundations at the heart of yoga/meditation practice. The specialist components integrated within this MA are organised to serve as platform for further (MPhil/PhD) graduate research; the more general components of the programme provides those students who do not intend to pursue doctoral research with an advanced introduction to the physiological dynamics, doctrinal foundations, history, regional context and theoretical presuppositions that shaped the traditions of yoga and meditation. The programme thus offers students (a) advanced knowledge of the background to, and understanding of, yoga and meditation, from their origin in ancient India to their apex in mediaeval Japan; (b) advanced skills in research and writing on topics that pertain to yoga/meditation, drawing on both primary sources (in translation) and secondary sources; (c) advanced skills in presentation and communication of their knowledge of the topics covered in the lectures.

This MA is taught through evening classes, typically running between 18.00h and 20.00h on weekdays, at the SOAS Russell Square Campus in Central London.

This MSc programme meets the industrial demand for the training and education of both existing and future engineers in the advanced concepts of electrical power systems and renewable energy. It aims to produce graduates of the highest calibre with the right skills and knowledge who will be capable of leading in teams involved in the operation, control, design, and economic analysis of the electrical power systems and networks of the future – smart grids.

It will meet the demand for the research and development of sustainable electrical power systems and the demand for training and education of existing and future power engineers in the advanced concepts and understanding of sustainable electrical power systems and renewable energy.

This programme also aims to provide graduates with the ability to critically evaluate methodologies, analytical procedures and research methods in:

  • Control concepts and methods
  • Advanced energy conversion systems and power electronic applications
  • Advanced power electronic technologies for electrical power networks – HVDC and FACTS
  • Electrical power system engineering - using state-of-the-art computational tools and methods, and design of sustainable electrical power systems and networks

Patterns of study

The majority of students study our taught Masters programmes full time. Our programmes are also suitable for practising engineers who wish to study part-time or take a single module to earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Many modules are completed in three-day sessions allowing you to focus one topic at a time. Following each session of lectures there is an opportunity for you to deepen your understanding through private study and in most cases there is also an assessed assignment.

Overview module

There is a shared introduction to topics from communications engineering, requirements analysis and object-oriented design, and an introduction to and recap of C programming. For the communications engineering programmes there is an introduction to key issues in the design of antennas, radio frequency circuits and link budgets. For the computing programmes there is an introduction to object-oriented programming.

Core modules

These modules cover the advanced specialist topics required for your specific degree programme, such as statistical signal processing and coding and advanced digital design. These technologies are at the heart of many current developments in modern electronic systems. 

Cross-programme option modules

These options specialize in topics relevant to each degree programme and give you the opportunity to adapt the programme that you have chosen to study. The prior knowledge needed for each module is specified in the student handbook to help you make the most appropriate choice. This allows you the greatest possible freedom to customise your study package appropriately.

Individual project

This is an opportunity for you to develop specialist knowledge. Some projects are undertaken in collaboration with companies and, in some cases, you may work on company premises investigating issues of direct concern to future product development. Typical projects include the development of hardware for automotive radar signal processing and the detection of leaks in landfill sites, wireless access systems, 3G mobile radio for light aircraft, the creation of 3D worlds for surgery simulation and wearable computing.

Assessment and awards

Assessment is by a combination of written examination and course work. There is a strong emphasis on course work to deepen understanding. The pass mark is 50%. A merit is awarded to students with an average of 60% or more and a distinction is awarded to students with an average of 70% or more, in both taught and project modules. There are prizes for students who perform especially well overall and for those who complete exceptionally good individual projects.

You will complete modules on campus and practice placements. You will be taught in a small group in our purpose built rehabilitation and assessment facilities, which includes an occupational therapy skills areas, simulated home environments and movement analysis laboratory.  In the second year you will build on knowledge and skills developed in year 1 applying it to contemporary service delivery, exploring entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship and leadership skills. You will also have the opportunity to complete an extended piece of project work, further developing skills for research and service improvement.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Teaching takes place in our purpose-built facilities, which include an Occupational Therapy Skills Facility, multidisciplinary therapy clinic and movement analysis laboratory.

Members of the course team are actively involved with the professional body (RCOT) in a number of capacities, including membership of committees relating to education, and steering groups for profession related research projects.

We have well established links with occupational therapists working within the NHS, social services, third sector and private providers across the North West, as well as charitable organisations and international institutions and hospitals, providing excellent opportunities for you to gain experience of the breadth of contemporary occupational therapy practice.

We have a particular emphasis on ‘real-life’ assessments that reflect the ways in which students will learn and practice during the course. Methods include practical assessments, presentations, assignments and practice-based assessment. There is a strong commitment to providing timely and constructive feedback for all assessments.

Throughout the course you will meet a range of service users and carers within the academic curriculum as well as you practice placements.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme is comprised of six modules four delivered in the first year and two in year two. You will develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities through small-group learning, through a case-based and client-centred approach. You will develop your learning via realistic cases, so that you can see the contemporary practice relevance of the content. The face-to-face time will be used in an active and interactive way, and we expect you to engage in tutor- and self-directed learning.

Students will have opportunity to test their knowledge and skill development through a range of assessment tasks, including practice based learning assessment, written assignments, presentations, practical skills assessments, occupational analysis, project work, OSCE and examinations.

In addition to these summative assessment tasks (which students must pass in order to pass each module), we offer formative assessment opportunities which include online learning tasks, peer assessment of written work, class presentations, academic advisor support for the core practice skills portfolio, and regular debrief sessions of practice placement experience. These opportunities are central to your learning, as you will receive feedback that is relevant both to your development and to the summative assessment tasks in the module.

All the core members of the teaching team are HCPC registered Occupational Therapists and members of the RCOT. The team has wide and diverse experience, including current practice, research informed teaching, and research. We have staff who are specialists in a range of Occupational Therapy practice and research areas, who are able to bring this expertise and experience to life for students in the teaching sessions.

Inter-professional working is an integral part of Occupational Therapy practice. During this course and in your professional career, you will be working alongside other healthcare related professionals such as Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Social Workers to deliver effective and patient-centred care. Whilst you are at University, you will have timetabled sessions where you will work in partnership with several professions. You will learn about the crossover in care amongst disciplines, as well as distinct differences and boundaries between the professions. Learning about, with and from students in other disciplines will help prepare you for real-world practice settings. During your time on placement, you will work with a variety of professionals and will be a part of the wider multi-disciplinary team. This will further develop your skills in communication and collaborative working to provide optimal care and improve health and social care outcomes.

OPPORTUNITIES

During the programme you will undertake 4 placement blocks in a range of contemporary settings which are arranged throughout the programme. You will experience real-life occupational therapy practice from the first semester of the course. You will be supported by your Practice Placement Educator and be also visited by your UCLan Placement Tutor. This means that you will have opportunity to learn in the practice environment whilst also being supported by academic staff in the university. You will ned to successfully complete minimum 1,000 hours of assessed placement practice. The final placement block can be a 10-week full time elective placement, where you have the opportunity to negotiate your own placement setting which could be an international placement.
