What opportunities might it lead to?

Students who successfully complete an engineering related award as part of the Partnership Masters Programme can use their studies to gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status through the professional engineering institutions; the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE); the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST); the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM); and the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE).

Students who successfully complete either the MSc Occupational Health and Safety Management or MSc Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Management named awards as part of the Partnership Masters Programme are eligible to apply for graduate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Students can also choose whilst undertaking either of these named awards, to work towards Chartered IOSH status.

Module Details

The time you take to complete your studies is up to you and is not tied to the academic calendar. It depends on the point at which you start the course and your personal circumstances at work and at home.

You will choose your proposed award title according to the subject material you plan to include in your studies. You must, however, choose one of the award titles from this list:

*Combined Studies is the award for students whose work is not covered by any of the others.

Here are the units you will study:

Accredited Prior Learning (APL): This allows you to receive credit for the qualifications you already have and for experience that has given you the learning equivalent to academic qualifications. This can include in-service training courses and qualifications, as well as learning from on-the-job experience. To claim credit for experiential learning you have to submit a portfolio of evidence matching your knowledge and skills to units in the University's Taught Units Database. The maximum APL credit you can receive is two thirds of the credit for the award. Prior Learning Portfolios should be submitted as soon as possible, to allow time for assessment before registration.

Learning Management: This is a credit-rated unit. It is the linking thread for your studies. In this unit, you will write a learning contract and amend it as necessary if circumstances change. You will work to the contract plan and deliver your evidence (reports, reviews or other items) on the dates you have specified.

Work-based Learning Projects: These usually make up the bulk of the learning contract. They must involve new learning for you, so they cannot be simply the activities involved in your regular job. However, they should be of value to your employer as well as yourself and you should be able to carry out much of the project work in normal working hours.

Taught Units: Units from the University of Portsmouth or other higher education institutions can be included in your programme. They are a good way of acquiring new knowledge in a structured way. They are delivered as part of the University's normal teaching provision and are not run by the Partnership Programme.

Programme Assessment

You will set your own learning objectives, course content and timetable. It is compulsory that some of your learning is via work-based learning projects while taught units and other training programmes provide additional and supported learning.

We set the framework for your degree and assess your work, but you choose what to learn, how you will learn and what evidence you will deliver for assessment. We ensure that you achieve the standard appropriate to your award through a process of learning management.

Course overview

This exciting one year, full time, innovative and high-quality PGCE Programme has been specifically developed to provide a route for students wishing to gain a PGCE in Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status. Trainees will have the opportunity to choose an Early Primary or Primary route as well as selecting a subject enhancement. It has been specially designed to blend University-Based academic learning with Practice Based teaching experiences in our Partnership schools. Our wide Partnership of schools works very closely together with University Tutors who are experts in Education to link theory and practice in order to ensure our Trainees develop into research informed, dynamic and confident Newly Qualified Teachers. The Programme actively draws on excellent Practitioners from our Partnership to complement theoretical input in University taught sessions.

In addition to this the PGCE also provides students with the academic opportunity to study at Masters Level as part of the Programme in order to gain 60 credits towards a Masters Degree. Masters Degrees are becoming increasingly desirable in Education and give teachers increased opportunity for promotion within this field.

This programme is also offered as part of our School Direct route. We are proud that the 2015 inspection from Ofsted rated our Primary Provision at Sunderland to be “Good” noting strengths in Trainee employability and Trainee confidence about entering the profession as well as their commitment to teaching. Ofsted highlighted in particular Trainees’ awareness of potential barriers to pupils’ learning and personal development, reflected in the way they seek to tackle discrimination of any kind.

The average starting salary for a teacher compares favourably with many other sectors and it is currently over £22,000. Salary packages include access to one of the country’s largest public sector pension schemes.

Teaching and assessment

School Based Teaching Placements are central to the Programme and all University Modules are designed to support Trainees in developing their knowledge and confidence in teaching. University input is delivered by both expert Tutors and excellent Practitioners from Partnership Schools, in a wide variety of ways including, lectures, tutorials and practical workshops as well as online discussions.

All aspects of the Programme are designed to enable you to meet and demonstrate the National College for Teaching (NCTL) and Leadership Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Students will compile evidence against the Standards throughout the Programme in their online e-Portfolio. The PGCE Primary Tutor Team is committed to providing the best experiences for our Trainees. Our Personal Tutor system ensures all Trainees are allocated an individual Tutor and are nurtured and developed both academically and professionally throughout the Programme.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Subject knowledge is monitored through the use of subject audits which enable students to identify their strengths and areas of development and to then action plan with Subject Specialist Tutors support to increase their knowledge and confidence in identified areas.

Modules are assessed through a variety of assessment methods including, Assignments, Portfolio and Practice Based Tasks. Assessed Placements are assessed by Partnership schools/settings in liaison with the University.

The aim of the PGCE Secondary Partnership is to enable you to develop the range of skills required to become a qualified teacher of pupils aged between 11 and 16 (with post-16 enhancement).

More specifically, you will learn how to:

Cope effectively in the classroom by developing your classroom management and control skills.
Develop a critical understanding of the curriculum and pedagogy of specialist areas.
Establish an understanding of a range of whole school issues, the values and assumptions that underpin them and their application to school and classroom practice.
Develop an understanding of pupils in school, their similarities and differences, particularly in terms of their needs, their behaviour, their motivation and levels of attainment.
You will hone these skills by undertaking subject specialist study and work on cross-curricular, focusing on school and classroom-based issues. This study, supported by the school-based work, will provide you with an integrated programme of professional training.

Course content

The PGCE Secondary is the first phase of a career-long process of personal and professional development, which will equip you to become a secondary school teacher. The PGCE Secondary is a course in Initial Teacher Training which is accredited by the DfE, the successful completion of which will accord you Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Our course has recently been inspected by Ofsted which resulted in an “Outstanding” grading for all aspects of our provision.

Each student teacher on the course specialises in one of the subjects listed above. Subject pedagogy is explored in curriculum groups, examining techniques for making each subject accessible and stimulating in a classroom environment.

Structure and Assessment

The course is organised as three modules:

Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum
Self-directed Study

The Professional Issues in School Based Education relates to the Teacher Standards and is delivered in two parts, prior to each of the two extended teaching practices. The teaching is related to those classroom-based issues such as the psychology of learning, the law, curriculum groups, examining techniques for making each subject accessible and stimulating in a classroom environment and is followed up in subject groups and during school placements The block practices in the Autumn and Spring allow for practical opportunities for full professional development where there is a progression from observation, structured activities and group work to whole class work.

Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum and Self Directed Study are studied at Masters Level. The Teaching and Learning in the Curriculum Module draws on the international research expertise within the School of Education enabling student teachers to engage critically in issues relevant to the classroom and school, particularly those that impact on the success of children as learners. The Self Directed Study module draws on students’ experience during weekly visits to schools and their own small scale action research, and links this to critical engagement with published educational research.

These Masters modules provide an opportunity to explore, in a more theoretical way, the issues to do with teaching and learning through lectures and mixed subject and phase seminar groups taught in addition to sessions taught in a conference week usually after Christmas. In addition to covering Teacher standards these modules will enable assessment work to be carried out for the award of PGCE.

On successful completion of the course, student teachers will have 90 credits and QTS.

Course overview

This initial teacher training course equips you to share your passion in a creative subject and inspire young people to fulfil their potential. D and T is a core subject in the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and there will always be a need for good D and T teachers.

Currently (2015) there is a national shortage of D and T teachers, so this provision fills an essential gap in the shortage of training providers across the country. PGCE Design and Technology is a 36-week Post-graduate programme which prepares trainees to teach in an 11-18 education environment. Recent developments in the past year have resulted in an innovative programme which is at the cutting edge of ITE.

This programme is also offered as part of our School Direct route.

University-based subject academics have extensive experience in school and have published and exhibited their work internationally and had influence in developments in the subject both on a national and international level.

The course has two strands. The first strand is based at the University and provides a solid grounding in theory and practical issues. The second strand is based in partnership schools.

The trainees spend a TDA specified minimum of 120 days on placement in partnership institutions. Theory informs practice and pedagogical knowledge is developed alongside subject specialisms. The Teaching Experience(s) with an emphasis upon a Partnership between the University course and the school further develops the concept of putting theory into practice whilst gaining confidence through increased contact with the school environment and facilitates progression towards the ITT professional standards. Many partnership schools employ trainees after successful placements.

It is expected that trainees, on being awarded QTS should offer at least one specialist field of knowledge to key stage 5 and a second specialist field of knowledge to key stage 3. All trainees are specialists in ‘Core’ design, regardless of their specialist field of knowledge. Fields of knowledge include Textiles, Food, Resistant materials and Electronics with Graphics throughout each area.
D and T at Sunderland adhere to the Design and Technology Association (DATA) subject related guidelines. As the professional body of Design and Technology, their requirements and benchmark statements are strictly adhered to within our programme and practical teaching experience is gained.

Students will all have the opportunity to follow an accredited Design and Technology Core Health and Safety Programme which on successful completion will lead to Certification in the Core.

South East London Teaching Partnership

The Department of Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies at Goldsmiths has recently entered into a formal Teaching Partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Southwark and the London Borough of Lewisham for the delivery of social work education at Goldsmiths.

We are one of only four sites across the country to have received government funding to develop and test new and innovative approaches to social work qualifying education, early career training and continuing professional development programmes. As a result, a significant number of social work practitioners, from all levels within these three local authorities, are involved in the MA Social Work programme, delivering or co-delivering lectures, workshops and seminars. This means that there is a very close relationship with practice to ensure that by the end of the programme students are equipped to deliver authoritative, compassionate, social work practice that makes a positive difference to people’s lives.

You will be encouraged to make links between anti-oppressive practice, social work values, the legal framework, theories, methods and skills of intervention and social work practice throughout the course.

Intake

The programme has an intake of around 35-40 students each year. Goldsmiths is committed in its policy and practice to equal treatment of applicants and students irrespective of their race, culture, religion, gender, disability, health, age or sexual orientation. We particularly welcome applications from members of minority groups.

The teaching includes lectures and workshops with the entire student group and small study groups, reflective practice discussion groups and seminars of between 10 and 14 students. A significant proportion of the course takes the form of small study groups and seminars.

The MA is a full-time course. It is not possible to study the course part-time. It is not possible for students to transfer from a social work course at another university onto the second year of the Goldsmiths MA in Social Work course.

Modules & Structure

Successful applicants on the MA in Social Work commit to studying on a full-time taught course over two years. On successful completion you will receive a MA in Social Work which is the professional entry qualification to be a social worker and it enables you to apply for registration as a social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council.

The curriculum aims to provide you with the value, knowledge and skill base for practice and is organised around study units, workshops, lectures/seminar modules, projects and private study. The teaching and learning opportunities centre on the key areas of the social sciences and their application to Social Work practice, as well developing your intellectual capacity, and the skills necessary to get you ready for practice. There is an expectation that you attend at least 85% of all aspects of the programme.

The structured learning includes specific learning in:

human growth and development, mental health and disability
social work theories and methods; assessment, planning, intervention and review
communication skills with children, adults and those with particular communication needs
law, and partnership working across professional disciplines and agencies
social science research methods, including ethical issues
Practice is central to the programme, and there will be practice placements in two settings and with different service user groups (eg child care and mental health). The learning on the programme builds over the two years and prepares you to apply your knowledge to practice situations. We work closely with a range of practice organisations in the Greater London Area. The placements are allocated by our placement tutor and matched with individual profiles. In some instances you may have to travel long distances to your placement organisation. You will need to cover the cost of travel to your placement. You will be expected to work the core hours.

Social workers have a dual responsibility to act within the state’s welfare framework and also to recognise the pervasive influence of oppression and discrimination at an individual and a structural level in most of the situations in which they work. We will prepare you for this professional responsibility.

Year 1

In year 1 you are introduced to social work as a professional activity and an academic discipline. You consider key concepts such as the nature of need, community, social work services, and the significance of the service user perspective.

You are also provided with an introduction to: life-span development, assessment in social work and a range of social work intervention approaches. Your assessed practice consists of 70 days spent as a social worker; this gives you the chance to develop your communication and social work practice skills with service users, and to work in partnership across professional disciplines and agencies.

Year 2

Year 2 provides you with an overview of the legal and organisational context of social work, and extends your knowledge and skills in one of the two main specialist areas of social work practice: working with children and families, or working with adults in need. You will work in small groups to explore methods of intervention, research and theories which are relevant to a particular area of social work, while another assessed practice element enables you to meet the professional requirements for social work training via 100 days of practice under the guidance of a practice assessor.

You are expected to demonstrate competence across a range of standards and this is formally assessed. The learning on the MA Social Work programme builds over the two years and prepares you to apply that knowledge to practice situations.

Practice placements

You are required to spend 170 days in practice settings.

In Year 1 there is a practice placement lasting 70 days and in Year 2 the practice placement lasts 100 days. These placements are arranged through the allocation system devised by the College. The practice placements will be supported by 30 days for the development of practice skills.

You have an identified Practice Educator for each of the two practice placements. Most of our placements are located in South East London, so if you live elsewhere you will need to travel.

Assessment

The programme is assessed by a range of methods including essays, assessed role plays, take home papers, project work, a practice based case study, a final year dissertation, and the production of a practice portfolio for each placement.

Assessment of practice is by reports by your Practice Educator. This includes direct observation of your work with service users as well as your practice portfolio, and a narrative giving an evaluation of your work.

Professional standards

Social work is a regulated profession. From 1 August 2012, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) took on the regulation of social workers and the regulation of the performance of social work courses. This means that social work students will need to adhere to the standards set out in the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Guidance on conduct and ethics for students (HCPC 2009), and work towards meeting the HCPC Standards of Proficiency - Social workers in England (HCPC 2012). These are the standards social work students are expected to demonstrate at the end of their last placement/ qualifying level.

THE COORDINATOR OF THE SEMINAR

The International Seminar on European Project Management is organized and coordinated by Pixel, an education and training institution based in Florence (Italy) having as its main aim the provision of support to internationalization and European Cooperation. Pixel successfully coordinated and managed over 75 European projects. Some of the European programmes that funded the projects in which Pixel was and is involved are: Socrates ODL; Socrates Minerva, Socrates Grundtvig, Socrates Lingua, eLearning, Leonardo da Vinci, Lifelong Learning, Justice Programme, Safer Internet Programme. Many among the European projects coordinated by Pixel were given an “Excellent” rating and identified as “Best Practice” by the European Commission.

ORGANIZATION

The European Project Management international Seminar has a duration of 50 hours.

25 hours of classroom based learning held in Florence (Italy). The 25 hours course is organized in 5 days, Monday to Friday, 5 hours each day.
25 hours of e-learning integrated with 2 virtual meetings with the course tutor and the other course participants. A Forum is also available for virtual meetings among all participants.

The classroom course takes place at Pixel, in Florence, Italy.

METHODOLOGY

The approach used is highly practical, based on the expertise of the course trainers who have over 15 years of experience in planning and managing projects and initiatives funded by the European Commission, mainly in the sector of Education and Training.

A practical simulation is carried out for each topic in focus. The practical simulation is based on the use of the services, databases and documentation made available, on-line, by the European Union.
The objective of the practical activity is the simulation of the development and presentation of a European project.
At the end of the international Seminar, every work group will have produced a first draft of a European project including the application form, budget, transnational partnership etc.

FOLLOW UP

During the classroom course each participant is introduced to the e-learning course’s contents.

During the four weeks after the classroom course, 2 virtual meetings are organized between the course trainers and tutor and the course participants to further analyse and discuss the contents learnt at distance. An on line Forum is also available for all course participants to ask questions to the course trainers and share the answers with their colleagues.

PGCE School Direct is a unique school led route that provides exciting opportunities for you to train though work based learning, as a teacher, in a school. There are two routes available within School Direct:
Salaried Route
The salaried route is available to those candidates who have three or more years experience in schools and settings. Trainees apply direct to the school for a salaried position and are trained by the school in partnership with the University. You may also be eligible for a salaried route if you are a ‘career changer’ with transferrable skills.

Tuition Fee Route
This route is designed for trainees who prefer an apprenticeship approach to training. Trainees apply direct to the school via UCAS Sunderland codes and are trained by the school in partnership with the University.

Place management encompasses a range of professions internationally, including town and city centre management, market management, Downtown and Mainstreet management, destination management and marketing, Business Improvement District management and city marketing and branding. It is increasingly involving civic society and the third sector, and embraces new approaches to place change such as the Transition Town movement. The MSc Robotics is available through a partnership between UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol, and provides a comprehensive understanding of advanced robotics and automation systems. While providing an excellent background for a range of technology careers that require robotics and automation knowledge and skills, it also offers the specialisms to support doctorate-level studies and ongoing research careers.

Uniquely, the partnership gives you access to the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, a world-leading centre for autonomous robotic systems and robotics research.

Format

You'll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, group work, and through sessions at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL). The course is offered in partnership between UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol, and you will attend sessions at UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus, the University of Bristol, and BRL.

Assessment

You will normally be assessed through examination and coursework, as well as the dissertation.

The course provides an excellent route into this increasingly important area of industry, and into research and development.

The partnership between UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol has created a unique centre of excellence for engineering, in the heart of one of the UK's most important hubs for engineering industry especially in the aeronautical and electronics sectors. School Direct is an employment based model of teacher education where you will gain qualified teacher status as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). School Direct involves schools working in partnership with LSBU to deliver the training. You'll be based in your school, but supported by LSBU throughout.

School Direct supports the Department for Education in giving schools:
- Opportunities to design training fit for purpose to meet the needs of trainees and schools.
- Greater control over recruitment and selection for schools with the expectation that trainees will be employed.
- Greater choice of ITT accredited training providers and flexibility on how School Direct places are used.

The School Direct programme at LSBU is a high quality intensive programme designed to prepare trainees for working in London schools.
- 100% of our completing graduates in 2013/14 were graded as good or outstanding.

Modules

H Level modules:
- Core curriculum
This module covers all aspects of the English, mathematics, science and computing national curriculum at Key Stage 1.

- Professional studies
This module covers theories of learning, planning, teaching and assessment, classroom management and employment.

- Foundation subjects
This module covers the national curriculum foundation subjects including: history, geography, art and design, music, and design technology.

- School experience
You'll gain experience in two consecutive key stages. School experience is based on a training plan laid out at the beginning of the programme in conjunction with a class teacher, school based mentor and university supervising tutor.

- Alternative education setting
You'll gain experience in an Alternative Education Setting which may be an alternative mainstream school or in an informal education setting.

Masters level modules:
As part of the programme you'll have the opportunity to gain a PGCE choosing a Masters level option module that will meet you and your schools' needs, as well as the compulsory module. All the option modules have been developed by LSBU in collaboration with the expertise in our partnership schools.

- Equality, inclusion and citizenship
This module will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context. You'll undertake a small piece of classroom research.

Plus one of the following module options:
- SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability)
This module discusses and explores how to enable learners with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) to achieve in their learning.

- Connect, consume, create: ICT in the Primary School
Explore the most up-to-date research, knowledge and understanding that underpins ICT and the Computing curriculum in primary schools.

- Performing Arts
Prepares you to teach the performing arts subjects in a culturally diverse society.

- Raising Achievement in Mathematics (RAiM)
The RAiM module will help you gain knowledge and understanding to successfully teach mathematics with competence and confidence, and begin to develop as a specialist in this area.

- English: Language, learning and culture
This module focuses on spoken language as a key area of the English curriculum in order to explore culture and deepen learning in the classroom.

Teaching and learning

The university based sessions are taught through lectures, workshops, practical sessions, seminars and tutorials. The aim throughout is to encourage creativity, reflective pedagogy and sensitivity to educational issues, aims and objectives. We aim to provide a learning community that actively challenges inequality and injustice.

In particular, the module on Equality, Inclusion and Citizenship will allow you to reflect on key issues such as equality, diversity and sustainability in the educational context.

You will be encouraged to make links between the theoretical and practical elements of the course. We use an interactive model of teaching and learning and you will be encouraged to think critically about subjects to inform your understanding of effective methods of teaching and learning and how best to apply these in classroom situations.

During our OFSTED inspection in June 2014 our provision was rated as 'good'.

Key strengths of the employment-based partnership were identified by OFSTED:
- Teamwork is a significant strength;

- School Direct trainees value the training provided in the two week summer school. It quickly gets them ready for teaching at the start of the year in their school;

- From the outset trainees gain quickly a strong professional understanding of how schools work. They develop good professional relationships with the established staff they work with in schools;

- The quality of feedback and target setting is consistently evaluative and helpful. As a result trainees know exactly what they need to do to improve.
