Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

An MBA is an opportunity to either change career direction or consolidate experience then return and progress in a previous industry or job. The Financial Times Global MBA rankings show that, on average, 20% of alumni achieve board-level positions within three years of graduation.

This course is for people who are working as physiotherapists, who wish to develop themselves and their profession. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice aims to help you thrive in health and social contexts where the pace of change is fast and professionals need to be dynamic and proactive to meet the needs of the individuals that they work with.

The programme of study aims to be:

  • Clinical: with a focus on highly topical subjects, ability to learn in and from the workplace, practical experience, and ability to take specialist clinical and practice routes: for example, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatric physiotherapy, leadership and management, and education. 
  • Flexible: with a determination to enable study for students who have a variety of circumstances, and who live in different countries. Two paces of study are available (full-time and part-time) and two modes of study (distance learning, and blended learning which requires attendance). The standard full-time pace is 18 months, which can be accelerated to 12 months where relevant requirements are met. 
  • Supportive: with a focus on helping you to adjust to master’s level study at the start of the course, to stay engaged with your profession throughout the course, and to increase your employability as you progress towards completion. Alongside modules you will be involved in a ‘Learning in Community Programme,’ which includes study skills training, social events, CPD opportunities such as Master Classes, and opportunities and guidance to increase your employability, including guidance on professional registration.

Study routes

Full-time with attendance: 12-18 months

The full-time study route makes use of a blended mode of learning which includes face-to-face contact supported by online resources. This is designed with international students in mind and offers attractive practical modules as well as opportunities to learn in clinical settings (see modules).

The standard duration of the full-time route is 18 months. This is valuable if your priority is to use all opportunities to develop your professional standing and employability. If you wish to prioritise quick completion of your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice, and meet requirements, you can accelerate it to 12 months duration.

Part-time with attendance: 3-7 years

You can study the MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice part-time, with a minimum duration of three years, and maximum duration of seven years. If you study this route you can select modules which involve some attendance and some online study. For example, some modules are delivered with blocks of attendance and online study between these blocks. If you study part-time you can also choose to complete distance learning modules as part of your programme.

Distance learning (part-time or full-time):

1-7 years You can choose modules that enable you to complete your MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice entirely as distance learning . You can study distance learning at a full-time pace (12-18 months duration) or at a part-time pace (3-7 years).

Teaching, learning and assessment

We use a range of student-centred learning methods, including tutorials, seminars and practical classes, with facilitation of work based learning and recognition of prior learning. Further specific strategies are used to enable distance learning.

Your performance will be assessed by coursework (assignments), presentations and practical examinations, and you are provided with structured support in learning how to develop and demonstrate your academic skills at a master’s level. Class sizes are usually 5-10 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module that is studied on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will vary between semesters of study, but contact time might average about six hours per week over one academic year; this would be higher during taught modules. Whether you are studying distance learning or through a mixture of face-to-face contact and online work (blended learning), each 30-credit module will entail around 300 hours of student work. This includes contact with tutors (online or face-to-face), supported by independent learning. When thinking about the total amount of learning, for the full-time pace of study, you will undertake 120 credits of study over two 15-week semesters, followed by your dissertation. This suggests up to 40 hours per week of study. A student who chooses to study part-time may be undertaking, for example, 60 credits of study, which would equate to about 20 hours per week of study.

The distance learning route can be studied part-time or full-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies

In order to design a flexible, clinical and supportive course, we talked with current students, former students and employers internationally. We collaborate with many physiotherapists and managers locally to create opportunities for our students to contribute to the development of physiotherapy services during their course. This ensures the relevance of their studies, their professional development, and advancement of the physiotherapy profession. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice was developed from the MSc Physiotherapy (Post- Reg) which was accredited by the UK’s Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. The MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice will be renewed for the same  accreditation. This course does not lead to HCPC registration. However, advice is given to assist the process of registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You’ll study

The MSc involves a curriculum of seven core classes and a range of optional classes. Each module is taught two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Alternatively, the Open Access programme allows professionals to take single modules for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) purposes, or build up towards six modules to gain a Postgraduate Certificate.

MSc research project

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a thesis project. We encourage you to complete this overseas. Our MSc course leader has extensive contacts in arid countries such as Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, the Middle East and Asia, giving you valuable, varied learning opportunities and practical experience around the world.

Field camp

In the spring semester you go on a week-long field camp in Scotland. You’ll get the opportunity to put much of the learned theory into practice.

Site visits introduce you to the geology and hydrogeology of the study area. You’ll gain practical experience in conducting pump tests, recovery tests and chemical sampling.

Work placement

As part of the class Study in Collaboration with Industry you undertake a work placement where you report to the offices of a hydrogeological organisation and actively contribute to one of their ongoing projects.

This is a very valuable experience for you as it allows you to work as hydrogeologists for a number of weeks exposing yourself to a working environment as well as allowing you to build up contacts within industry.

Attendance

One year full-time study involves attendance at classes over two terms, plus a dissertation during the third term.

Part-time (open to UK/EU students only) involves class attendance in Years 1 & 2 and a dissertation in Year 2. Depending on timetables, just two days work release per week may be needed for 24 weeks in the year.

You can also study this course part-time through online distance learning, over 36 months, offering a flexible learning mode of study.

How is IBERS Distance Learning Delivered?

This MSc has been designed to be as accessible and flexible as possible, particularly for those in full time employment or living outside the UK. Each 20 credit, 14 week module includes recorded lectures from academics and industry experts, along with guided readings, discussion forums and two assignments. We work very closely with Bangor University, which means that you can also take relevant Bangor modules as part of your studies.

How much work will I need to do?

A typical master’s student is expected to study for 200 hours when taking a 20 credit module. Our students report spending 10 to 15 hours a week per module studying; obviously the more time and effort you can put in, the more you'll benefit from studying the module and the better your grades are likely to be.

How long will it take?

Part-time: From the initial start date you have a maximum of five years to fit in as many or as few modules as you wish. A part-time MSc cannot be completed in less than two years.

Full-time: You should choose your start time to ensure that you will cover the modules that interest you. You will be expected to take two or three modules at a time and complete within two years.

Addiction problems involve an interaction between the drug, the individual and the environment. This programme provides a critical perspective on substance use and misuse and looks at the evidence base for policies and interventions within the area. How you will be assessed

Individual modules have assessment tailored to aims and content of each module. Most module culminate with a written assignment based around content covered, or research completed, during the module.

Formative and summative assessments are designed to arise naturally from study and work. Major assessments focus directly on application in the workplace. Students are assessed on 4 x 30 credit modules plus a Workplace Based Project (60 credits).

Careers

A majority of students studying for Masters in Education at the University of Dundee are already in full time employment. In addition a number of students either already hold senior management positions or have moved into senior management positions during their time studying on the programme. By engaging with the MEd Programme students are able to influence their own Professional Learning journeys and take control of their own CPD.

As the Master of Education programme is for professionals with some teaching or educational experience the programme will not qualify you to teach in Scotland.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced therapists to progress in lower limb orthopaedics in the current climate. Supported by our own, highly experienced staff, you will also be  taught by clinical experts who are in current practice.  

Key lectures and case discussion sessions will be delivered on campus days by the consultant faculty, who will also guide the distance learning element of the course coupled with work-based learning tailored to individual aspirations. This course will also give you access to expertise in clinical assessment,  rehabilitation, lower limb pathology and biomechanics as well as specialist surgical skills workshops.

Modules can also be taken as stand-alone courses for continuing professional development.

COURSE DETAILS

The course runs full-time over one year and part-time over three years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: two module
  • Postgraduate Diploma: four modules
  • Masters: four modules plus a dissertation

Part-time study with elements of distance learning is delivered in blocks for those involved in busy clinical practice.

Observational clinical placements in hospitals, specialist units and sports clubs are arranged for full-time students in the specialist areas of lower limb orthopaedics.

TEACHING

Delivery is by full-time (one year) and part-time attendance (three years) at the University. Please note: international applicants are only able to apply for the full-time route.

A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Attendance is between three to six days depending on the module with distance online learning released weekly, live webinars and tutorials using a variety of media. Both full and part-time students are taught together.

All supportive material from the taught days is recorded on our virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

Each module in the course employs a variety of teaching strategies considered most appropriate for delivery of the aims and objectives. A student-led approach to learning will be encouraged throughout with directed and personal study will perform an integral part of the course.

The clinical module, lower limb, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.

For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.

Research skills sessions are integrated throughout the course.

ASSESSMENT

This course allows for a variety of assessments, depending on the module you will be undertaking and can include:

  • Written assignments
  • Objective structured clinical examination
  • Case presentation/study
  • Literature review
  • Electronic portfolio of evidence

FACILITIES

The course is delivered in new state of the art practical and workshop facilities.

Extensive online resources are available to aid study.    

A number of the specialist workshops will maximise the use of specialist facilities available at the University.

EMPLOYABILITY

This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced practitioners in both Primary and Secondary Care. You will gain the skills and qualification to compete for specialist posts in orthopedics within the NHS and private sector.

This course addresses the needs of orthopaedic trainees and of experienced non-medical health professionals who have been training/developing in their clinical roles.  

Many doctors have advanced to higher posts in surgery as a result of completing the MSc.  

Non-medical health professionals have advanced to specialist roles. Completion of the Extended Proficiency module provides students with an electronic portfolio of evidence of practice competency.  

Networking opportunities with experts and peers in the field of upper limb management.

The course works with a number of orthopaedic companies to provide specialist workshops.

The Masters by Research (MRes) is a full-time or part-time Masters Degree by research allowing graduates from disciplines related to Computing and I.T. to develop their subject specific and personal skills through a programme of guided and structured research studies. Delivered in the distance learning (DL) mode means that you will be able to access learning materials and interact with staff at the University remotely, using the latest technology and online resources. It is an intensive programme of research under the guidance of a research supervisor who is a specialist in the chosen area of research. The general area of your study must fit in with the overall ‘flavour’ of the award, but within that general area you will be able to specialise in a topic negotiated between you and your supervisor according to a ‘Learning Contract’. The part-time route is very suitable for existing technologists, lecturers and teachers in academic institutions and may produce outcomes that are valuable to a current or potential employer. The distance learning mode of study is also suitable for learners whose situation allows them time to do online research but makes it more difficult to visit the University.

Course content

The MRes programme by distancce learning is demanding and requires the equivalent of a minimum of 48 weeks of study in the full-time mode. The distance learning MRes usually takes a minimum of two years to complete in the part-time mode and the maximum period of registration for both full- and part-time study is five years. The course structure is heavily negotiated throughout so that it fits what you are interested in. As with all research you will proceed at a pace that suits you, within the guidelines given above. You will need to be highly motivated and personally well-organised. The Programme begins with the Research Methods Module which provides the research training you will use on the remainder of the course. This runs in September each year, so the middle of September is the normal start time. You will draw up a Learning Contract with your supervisor after the Research Methods Module. The remaining modules are taken sequentially. In the full time mode you would normally complete two modules by the end of Semester 1 (January), two more by the end of Semester 2 (May) and the Masters Dissertation by the following September.

It is possible to finish the Programme with the award of Pg. Certificate after successfully completing the first two modules, a Pg. Diploma after two more modules and the Masters by Research after successful completion of the Masters Dissertation.
