* The programme is compatible with the JRCPTB (Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board) syllabus in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus, in particular the aspects covered by the 'knowledge-based examination' although completion of the course does not itself form any part of the specialist accreditation process

The Postgraduate Diploma is designed as a complete curriculum in endocrinology and diabetes, both for new entrants to these fields, as well as an update and extension for those already familiar with them. The programme provides clinicians with theoretical and clinically applied aspects of their discipline, and incorporates elements of the UK specialty training curriculum for endocrinology and diabetes mellitus. It also includes aspects of the knowledge-based examination required for Royal College Certification. There is a focus on up to date developments in the field with expert opinions and presentations.

In addition, students taking the MSc complete a project on a topic to be approved by the programme organiser which is conducted at the candidate’s home institution. The project is examined in the form of written dissertation of approximately 10,000 words and a viva.

Overview

This exciting, contemporary and new Faculty-based flexible programme focuses on higher academic study underpinning a higher level of professional practice in healthcare. It is designed to provide the health and social care practitioner a stimulating and rigorous analysis of health care practice. It will have an interdisciplinary and interprofessional focus and aim to prepare practitioners to lead and manage change in a global health care environment.

It will combine conceptual, theoretical and practical work-based learning approaches to the study of health and social care practice and provide the opportunity for the practitioner to develop skills and expertise to an advanced level. The student will be able to map out a series of learning outcomes based on learning opportunities available in the workplace which represents an exploration of work focused and work related issues complemented by taught modules.

Within the MSc Advancing Professional Practice, there are five possible pathways for you to choose from. Each one is based upon contemporary clinical practice.

The five pathways are;
- End of Life Care
- Paediatric Endocrinology
- Nursing
- Midwifery
- Generic

One of the significant values which informs each route is work-based learning, which is incorporated in a stimulating and challenging way. It creates a distinctive, individual approach as it centres on the application of learning in the workplace and evidence-based assessment of practice and achievement.

Course Aims

Broad educational aims of the programme are to:

- Demonstrate the capacity for critical enquiry, analysis, and application of knowledge in their practice and to support innovations in health and social care

- Demonstrate effective self-management and leadership skills to effect change in health and social care

- Engage within a work-based learning programme consolidating and extending theoretical knowledge and practice skills relevant to their own discipline, facilitating academic and professional development to enhance the delivery of quality care

- Promote and enhance their skills in critical reflection, evaluation, professional decision making and leadership to inform best practice

- Promote effective collaboration, interdisciplinary and interagency working practices

- Engage with work-based learning to support the development and implementation of evidence-based practice; establish and lead projects in their practice setting

Entry Requirements

Potential/prospective students will normally:
- Hold current first level Professional Registration with a relevant regulatory body e.g. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); Health
Professional Council (HPC); General Social Care Council (GSCC).

- Have an identified work-based facilitator within their practice area, who will support and guide their development throughout the phases of the programme.

- Be working in clinical practice. Some potential/prospective student’s maybe managers/ educators within the Healthcare arena.

- Hold an undergraduate degree ideally 2.2 or higher in a related subject with a period of two years time in professional practice.

- Practitioners with extensive practice experience and no formal undergraduate degree will be considered by evidence presented within their professional portfolio and discussion at interview.

Course Content

The most important value which informs this programme is work-based learning which will be incorporated as a stimulating and challenging approach to programme delivery. This programme is distinctive because it will centre on the application of learning in the workplace and evidence-based assessment of practice and achievement, in order to relate the programme of study to the individual’s role of the practitioner.

This multidisciplinary MRes is ideal for recent graduates seeking to embark on a research career in biomedicine. The programme is focused on developing research and laboratory techniques, providing an opportunity to draw on the knowledge and expertise of the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Degree information

The programme provides key knowledge, skills and techniques essential for a career in all fields of research in biomedicine, including professions allied to medicine. Practical research constitutes 75% of the programme. Students conduct one 10-week and one 20-week project under supervised conditions within highly-rated research programmes with an excellent track record of cutting-edge, high impact research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. There are no optional modules for this programme.

The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), a mini research project (45 credits) and a maxi research project (90 credits).

-Research Methodology and Statistics
-Foundations of Biomedical Sciences

Dissertation/report
Students undertake two research projects, culminating in one dissertation of 6,000 words (mini project), and one dissertation of 12,000 words and an oral examination (maxi project).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of seminars, taught modules, workshops, tutorials, portfolio development, self-directed learning, research workshops, specialised research allocation, and laboratory meetings. Assessment is through assignments, online examinations, presentations, portfolio, reflective report, an essay, the mini and maxi research projects, and a viva examination.

The Biomedicine MRes is a comprehensive, one-year laboratory research-oriented programme designed to train and equip students prior to entering PhD or higher degree training. It allows clinicians to explore biomedical research before deciding whether to embark on a research-based career. It draws on the wealth of cutting-edge research conducted within UCL Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The programme is designed to allow students to explore other areas of biomedicine they may not have previously considered.

The Institute of Child Health (ICH), together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), is the largest centre in Europe devoted to clinical and basic research postgraduate education in children's health. Our research and educational portfolio cover a broad range of paediatric issues, from molecular genetics to ovulation health sciences, and encourages interdisciplinary work and the development of new areas of investigation.

MRes Biomedicine students have the opportunity to draw on the extensive expertise and knowledge of both ICH and GOSH and benefit from excellent state-of-the-art facilities in both laboratory and non-laboratory subjects.

There is also the option to apply for a combined MRes + PhD four year programme.This option may be of interest for those who are able to obtain 4 years of funding and wish to go on to study for an MPhil/PhD at ICH/GOSH directly after completing the MRes degree.
