This Master’s is an interdisciplinary programme, drawing upon politics, economics, history, sociology, international law, geography and cultural studies to explore global issues such as conflict, global inequalities, sovereignty and human rights.

Students have the opportunity to examine complex political issues, such as religion and sectarianism, conflict and democratisation. The programme aims to prepare students for future study and research, as well as for potential employment in areas such as the diplomatic service, development agencies, the non-government sector, journalism, consultancy, international and regional organisations, and the public sector.

Students join a thriving community of scholars and may have access to a range of extracurricular activities including external speakers and overseas study trips.

How You Study

Full-time students on this programme can expect to receive approximately 8 hours of contact time per week. However, this may vary depending on which optional modules are selected.

Overseas Study and Internships

Graduate students may spend a summer at a university abroad and earn six credits (as electives) toward their degree at USF. Overseas study requires approval by the graduate adviser and coordinator of the area of concentration. Students might also pursue an internship, which would substitute for an elective course upon approval by the graduate adviser.

Concentration Areas

Concentration options provide a framework by which graduate students may organize their program to achieve individual goals.

  • General Economics

Students collaborate with a Graduate Adviser to design a plan of study. Some students use this option to prepare for PhD studies; others prepare for careers as economists in government or the private sector. Opportunities exist for directed research, a master's thesis, study/research abroad, and internships.

  • Financial Economics

Students have the opportunity to study domestic and international financial markets, as well as the principles of financial decision-making in the banking, investment management, and corporate financial management professions. Students may also enroll in MBA courses and will complete a research project in the field of financial economics.

  • International Economics

Students take courses in International trade and International finance, and select three electives from such courses as Economic Development, Development Microeconomics, Development Macroeconomics, Natural Resource Economics and Development Policy, and International Political Economy. Students also complete a research project in international economics.

Scholarships

We offer a limited number of merit-based scholarships to incoming students on a competitive basis. There is no separate application for these one-time scholarships, which are limited in number, vary in amount, and cover only part of tuition costs. If a scholarship is awarded, it will be indicated in the admission letter sent by the Economics program. With any international trade there is a need to ensure that all formalities are dealt with effectively and risks are managed as much as they can be. International Commercial Law is for you if you want to support and protect business in terms of all areas of trade, different business interpretations in each country and jurisdiction, intellectual property law protection, world trade production and logistics planning, oil and gas and arbitration. Within international property law you also learn about trade mark and brand protection, and cultural property issues as an optional course. You can work in a wide variety of careers in private business within energy, retail, manufacturing, IT and technology, and many other business sectors reliant on international trade to grow their business. You will be responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts within business operations, goods and services and you will have a deep understanding about business. You may also be required to go overseas and work long hours at times when you are busy. This is an area of law with immense variety in it and diversity.

Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. With any international trade there is a need to ensure that all formalities are dealt with effectively and risks are managed as much as they can be. International Commercial Law is for you if you want to support and protect business in terms of all areas of trade, different business interpretations in each country and jurisdiction, intellectual property law protection, world trade production and logistics planning, oil and gas and arbitration. Within international property law you also learn about trade mark and brand protection, and cultural property issues as an optional course. You can work in a wide variety of careers in private business within energy, retail, manufacturing, IT and technology, and many other business sectors reliant on international trade to grow their business. You will be responsible for drafting and negotiating contracts within business operations, goods and services and you will have a deep understanding about business. You may also be required to go overseas and work long hours at times when you are busy.  This is an area of law with immense variety in it and diversity.

Powerful forces – the emergence of transnational economies, the lightning speed of global communications, and the movement of peoples, cultures and ideas into new settings – are reshaping notions of citizenship, society and community.

At the same time, however, older religious hatreds, sectarian violence and new fundamentalisms are recasting existing states and disintegrating individual, national and international notions of security. Such dynamics demand that we rethink why we are and where we are today, but also reconsider historical interpretations of past change within and among the world’s regions. To understand the global condition requires a thorough and sensitive understanding of diverse interests, ethnicities and cultures. The purpose of this new postgraduate award in International Relations (IR) is to foster within students a global perspective and encourage a multicultural awareness of contemporary problems.

IR develops critical awareness, conceptual understanding, sound research methods, and originality in the application of knowledge. Your MA will provide you with an appropriate set of intellectual skills to enable more informed and effective participation in an ‘ever-changing’ global context. Current social, political and economic globalisation demonstrates the inexorable importance of the ‘international’ and the increased relevance of this knowledge dimension at both academic and practice levels.

Methods of Learning

The Master’s award in International Relations is designed to provide a rounded education and broadly based qualification for UK graduates and equivalently qualified foreign students, particularly those who lack an international dimension through their previous study. It is awarded after completion of a mixture of taught courses and a programme of research. The MA lasts at least one year (if taken full time, two years part time), and is to be taken by persons with honours degrees (or equivalent achievement). Also on offer (and commensurate with this standard of education) are advanced short courses leading to Postgraduate Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas in IR.

In common with all universities, certain elements of the course are compulsory and other elements chosen. To be awarded the MA in International Relations each student must achieve 180 credits at Master’s level (here called CATS (Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme)). This includes 40 CATS of compulsory modules in International Theory, 20 CATS of compulsory methodology and research training, and a 60 CATS compulsory dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words. Compulsory modules define the intellectual basis of IR as a multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary subject while providing a firm foundation in theoretical issues and debates. They also develop the cognitive skills for specialist study and the practical skills for research. You gain the remaining 60 CATS through a wide choice of designated modules. All modules build upon the research and teaching expertise of individual tutors, and cover a wide range of themes in diverse areas of the globe – not just North America and Western Europe but the Middle East, Latin America, China and the Pacific Rim among others. A key aim is to develop a sensitivity and awareness of varied geo-political settings while comprehending the impact of change upon states, societies and individuals. Students are taught to discuss international problems to a high standard while applying the ways of analysis adopted by IR scholars to a range of issues.

We hope all candidates might be encouraged and enthused to achieve the MA. Yet we also recognise that some students may prefer to study in ‘stages’ – funds or time permitting. This is why we provide a named Postgraduate Certificate and a named Postgraduate Diploma. A Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations is available if students successfully complete 120 CATS points but do not complete the 60 CATS dissertation. Alternatively, there is the opportunity to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in International Relations by successfully gaining 60 CATS points including 40 CATS of IR theory but excluding 20 CATS of methodology/research and of course the 60 CATS dissertation module.

All of this gives you, the student, the added flexibility of opting in or out of awards as personal or financial circumstance change. It gives the added incentive of an identifiable and quantifiable award at each stage of study while consistently encouraging and widening your participation in postgraduate enterprise. This strategy also enables an individual to complete their study within a timescale suitable to their own specific needs. Multiple points of entry (February and September) over a one or two year cycle further facilitate this.

Schedule

At Master’s level study, we aim to encourage student-led debates and exchange of ideas. Modules will typically alternate fortnightly between classes on campus and online learning activities. Each module incorporates a variety of teaching methods in class, including workshops, student presentations and discussions of primary and secondary materials (such as film, images, documentary sources and online resources). Online learning activities include online seminars, discussion boards, podcasts and blogs.

Full-time students get six hours of timetabled contact per week, part-time students have three hours. This does not include individual tutorials or dissertation supervision.

Independent study and assessment time equate to approximately 18 hours per week full time or nine hours part time.

Assessments

Your MA in International Relations is assessed through a variety of types of coursework and the dissertation. Assessment items include essays, literature reviews, presentations and research reports. There are no examinations. All coursework reflects the high level of intellectual demands associated with a taught MA and has the aim of developing a range of oral and written skills. You need to be prepared to commit yourself to substantial reading and thought for successful completion of an MA. This time includes preparation for assignments, seminars and the dissertation element.

Although teaching strategies vary according to individual modules, considerable emphasis is placed upon student-based learning in order to foster effective critical participation and discussion as overall course objectives. This means lectures and tutor-led teaching provide overviews of major theories and themes but the seminar or workshop is where learning is consolidated, exemplified and used in more student-centred contexts.

Modules typically make use of current case study material, video teaching media as well as practical exercises and the more traditional lecture and seminar activities. Tutorials are very important in facilitating and directing the learning of cognitive skills on a personal basis – by working within the context of your individual needs, appropriate goals can be set, for example, in relation to essay preparation and feedback.

At each stage you are encouraged to plan and organise your own learning. This allows greater time to be spent on critical evaluation – so reinforcing and extending your learning experience. Mixed methods of teaching and learning are utilised in seminars to achieve aims and outcomes, including tutor input, structural discussions, small group work, presentations, guided reading of designated course material, and wider reading appropriate to Master’s level. Student-led presentations and small group work develop your transferable skills and enhance your capacity for critical reflection. The academic essay has a central function in every module in allowing you to engage with and reflect upon the key skills required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in IR. Coursework for all modules, but particularly in methods modules, allows students to acquire skills that they will then use in the dissertation.

Many students take the course purely because they have enjoyed History as a degree or as a personal interest and wish to pursue the subject further.

Progression to a taught postgraduate course is a path chosen by those wishing to further their careers, those intending to pursue further research and those who seek principally to satisfy their own intellectual interests. Successful completion will lead to the award of MA. This will complement a candidate’s existing qualifications. Major shifts have occurred in the way in which disasters are considered, resulting from an increasing awareness of problems internationally along with an identified need for solutions. The importance of disaster risk reduction has continued to grow both within governmental and non-governmental organisations.

This Masters course is a unique programme which will provide a balanced study of environmental hazards and disaster management, pre-event mitigation, disaster risk reduction and disaster relief, along with the development of technical and interpersonal skills. It will enable you to critically assess the effectiveness of the implementation of existing techniques, in order to evaluate good practice and apply it to new situations.

The standard Master’s tuition fees apply. However, additional costs will include the Summer School fees (currently about £1000) and the costs for any optional overseas residential fieldwork. Students may be eligible for bursaries from the University for £1500 or £2000 though conditions apply.

What you will study

The course will develop knowledge, technical skills, interpersonal and management skills, and expertise. You will study a range of hazards using examples from the UK and other countries. This will provide you with the experience to assess risks and vulnerabilities from desk-based research, laboratory and field situations, consider hazard management and disaster risk reduction strategies, and critically review the concept of resilience along with techniques for its development.

You will consider the dynamic and multi-faceted nature of disasters and examine a range of aspects pertinent to the operational, political and socio-cultural issues involved in disaster relief, including aspects of international law. The course will ensure a sound working knowledge and experience with one of the mostly widely used GIS platforms, extensively used by many planning authorities, GOs and NGOs, and you will develop valuable skills in the acquisition and processing of spatial datasets with a wide variety of disaster management applications, along with the ability to visualise and depict spatial information.

You will develop interpersonal skills for effective team-working, group leadership, and organisational management including the assessment of priorities, allocation of resources and co-ordination of activities through simulation experience. This range of interpersonal skills and humanitarian core competencies will enhance your employability after graduation.

Opportunities for study on residential field courses will include the use of field simulations either in Finland or in the UK, and the option to examine environmental hazards and evaluate management strategies on overseas residential field courses. Currently, the field course takes place in southern Italy to examine volcanic, seismic, landslide and tsunami hazards.

You will study the following modules:

The course is designed in a modular format and will be offered on a full and part time basis. Delivery will be mixed-mode, with a combination of traditional lectures, practicals and distance learning with supporting tutorials. For full time students, study will take place over 14 months, and for part time students, study may typically take two to three years.

Study will utilise a range of diverse learning approaches and activities to acknowledge the rich and diverse character and content of the body of knowledge that forms this Master’s degree course. It will include:

- Civil protection or planning authorities
- Specialist environmental consultancies
- UK or overseas research projects.

The initial arrangement of work and field placements will begin early in the course and the work/field placement will normally be expected to begin within the following Summer term. Preparation for the Master’s project or dissertation will commence in the Spring term, with literature review work and project plans to be completed before placements take place. They provide exceptional fieldwork locations that can be explored in a day. We make full use of these locations across our earth and environment courses to cover the practical aspects of our modules.

Many of our open-learning students run their structured training along-side the course. Thus, they become members of these institutions shortly after the completion of the course.

In summary, the programme offers a relatively quick route to RICS & CIOB membership for people who have no or very limited experience in the industry, and hence increases their potential for employment.

This course in detail

There are two modes of delivery for the MSc PMBE: full-time on campus or distance learning, and there are two entry points - September and January. PGCert and PGDip are offered as 'exit' awards. Candidates who are wishing to graduate with one of these awards, should also apply for a MSc place in the first instance.

Extensive on-line learning material is provided to all students via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) - our own intranet site. Students have access to this site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The course is assessed by 100% coursework submitted via the VLE. Module leaders can be contacted via the VLE, e-mail, telephone and Skype.

Intensive Study Periods - all students can attend four intensive study periods during their programme and these are normally around 3 days long. Students (and staff) enjoy these intensive sessions as they are able to share experiences and knowledge as well as renew friendships and make connections that extend into the industry. The open-learning students get the opportunity to meet face-to-face with staff. The organisation and the collaborative nature of these intensive study periods is always praised by our students who particularly like the site visits, workshops and guest lectures from industry experts that are among the key features.

Distance learners must find their own accommodation and are asked to cover expenses for travel to Oxford, accommodation and food.

Field Trips and Site Visits - there are a number of field trips and site visits which take place mainly during the intensive study periods. There is one European field trip during the MSc programme and this normally takes place at the end of January each year - usually to the Netherlands. As well as bringing together full-time and open-learning students, the aim of this field trip is to integrate knowledge gained in the early part of the programme, to develop team skills and to build relationships. With the European field trip we also expose students to project management practices outside the UK and encourage them to observe and report on the different approaches to managing projects in the UK, their own countries and overseas.

The European Field Trip takes place at the end of January for the duration of five days and four nights. Heavily subsidised by the School, a coach is also provided to transport students and staff from Oxford Brookes to the field trip destination. Please read the details further down the page for information about additional costs for the field trip.

In order to attend site visits as part of the programme of study, we ask that students provide their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Problem Based Learning - the programme will develop knowledge of current practice and issues in the built environment sector as well as building real-life skills including the exploration of interdisciplinary problems. We have responded to requests from industry to make our masters more practical by using an applied approach to learning, sometimes called “Problem Based Learning” or PBL. This approach encourages learning by allowing students to actively puzzle through problems that are adapted from complex real situations. As real problems cross discipline boundaries and require research and collaboration, we use our links with industrial practitioners to help devise the problems we use in class. This leads to a more exciting and relevant student experience.

Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are to a considerable degree determined by the use of problem-based learning (PBL) which encourages students to learn by applying theoretical principles in appropriate case studies. PBL leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students puzzling through problems, often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and context intact, using published resources, or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

In full-time mode, the delivery of new material is generally bi-weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study periods and a European field trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern. Outside these periods, online learning is the primary mode of learning for open-learning study. Where necessary, open-learning students are supported by email, Skype, on-line lectures and telephone during the periods off-campus.

Careers and professional development

Graduates of the School of the Built Environment have an outstanding employment record. Usually, 100% of the graduates of MSc PMBE are in employment within six months after graduation.

Local, national and international construction companies, developers, project management consultancies, house builders, surveyors and housing associations regularly recruit our graduates.

Many of these companies visit the department regularly to meet students for graduate positions. Our graduates are recognised as having an excellent level of communication, presentation and problem-solving skills.

All of our open-learning students are employed full-time by prominent companies in the sector.

Full-time students find similar employment shortly after graduation. They typically hold (Assistant) Project Manager positions. However, the breadth of knowledge that our students gain gives them the flexibility to function effectively in a number of different roles.

This is a conversion programme for students from any recognised degree to convert into real estate and it is the only professionally accredited postgraduate degree of its type in Scotland. Finance and Real Estate are two very employable professions in their own right but if you combine the two disciplines it opens up a wealth of different options from where you can start your career, where it can go to and where you can live. This programme is international in its relevance with options to study specific modules overseas. The Centre for Real Estate Research is a long established and well respected centre which provides well utilised statistics to markets within real estates environments.

If you want real value in terms of postgraduate degree options you gain knowledge in two different but very much aligned disciplines globally at University of Aberdeen. You gain knowledge and practical aspects to commercial property development, valuation and investment, respected by the Investment Property Forum and you can choose to study in Asia to develop case studies rather than take the traditional dissertation for your masters degree at and additional cost.

The programme brings together these two complementary disciplines offer the student both RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) accreditation and professional finance qualification and comes with a choice in taking CFA 1. The university has market-leading financial databases (the Thomson-Reuters Eikon suite) to support both the teaching and the individual study of students.  Employment options can include working for real estate companies nationally and internationally, start your own business or working freelance within consulting.

Our proposed programme is designed to provide a foundation to those who will determine the scope and direction of data analytics research within their organisation, and communicate the research outcomes to the ultimate decision-makers. Our graduates are trained to participate in the strategic management process, improve the organisation’s financial performance and help design the effective measures of performance of an organisation for which evidence-based data become a strategic asset in the decision-making process. Therefore, the primary goal is to provide an insight into business data analytics and prepare the students to develop the set of skills and attitudes that will evolve into effective leadership skills.

The main purpose of the programme is to develop a comprehensive set of skills and to encourage the positive attributes that are essential to becoming a successful business analyst.

The degree is committed not only to imparting specialist skills, but also to developing the so-called "soft skills” which are important in influencing people and organisations. As well as obtaining effective and persuasive communication skills, the module leaders also learn about ethics-related issues, which are another key ingredient to responsible leadership.

Pre-study modules

The MSc in Business Analytics starts online in the summer before the beginning of term 1 with three pre-courses which ensure that every student has the minimum specific background required by all other modules. These subjects are key elements of your course and you are strongly encouraged to complete the modules before you arrive at Cass in order to avoid being at a disadvantage.

  • Introduction to Python
  • This module is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of Python programming and no previous programming experience is expected. The teaching model is learning by doing and basic concepts are built up in an incremental manner. The online material is formulated via multiple Python code examples that enable the students to work independently when dealing with small Python programming tasks.
  • Introduction to R Programming
  • This module is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of R programming and no previous programming experience is expected. The teaching model is learning by doing and basic concepts are built up in an incremental manner. The online material is formulated via multiple R code examples that enable the students to work independently when dealing with small R programming tasks.
  • This module is designed to prepare you for understanding and performing the computer based exercises and tasks that you encounter in all core MSc in Business Analytics modules and will therefore be completed prior to beginning your course.
  • Professional Ethics and Good Academic Practice
  • This module aims to cultivate your awareness of some key ethical issues prevalent in data analysis and statistics, in particular those issues emerging in the applications of modern data science.
  • You will also develop your awareness of what constitutes good academic practice and learn how to properly reference your work and avoid issues such as plagiarism and poor scholarship in your work.

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course, students must complete:

  • Eight core modules (15 credits each)
  • Four elective modules (10 credits each)
  • One applied research project (20 credits).

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Business Analytics, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework takes a variety of formats and may consist of individual or group presentations/reports, set exercises or unseen tests.

Induction weeks

There is a compulsory two week induction programme just before Term 1 starts, which is a dedicated introduction to the course and to business analytics. You are required to complete a number of induction workshops at the beginning of the course as follows:

  • Team building
  • Career induction and careers fair
  • Professional development skills.

How will I study?
