The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a recognised stage 1 qualification for those wishing to pursue a career as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist whilst also fulfilling the requirements for graduates wishing to pursue professional training through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

By studying a Chichester you will have the opportunity to become involved in the wider research and consultancy work of the department which include Sport and Exercise Psychology academics and consultants.

The Sport & Exercise Psychology MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

It is a one-year full time (with part time routes available) programme of study designed for graduates from either Psychology or Sport and Exercise Sciences who are seeking to gain professional recognition through the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP).

Graduates would therefore practice as an Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist.

The MSc will also act as a suitable postgraduate qualification for those seeking research positions and other professions.

This course aims to develop students’ theoretical understanding of issues at the forefront of research in sport science and outdoor activities. It has been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests, with a strong emphasis on developing students’ ability to question current thinking and propose alternative evidence based actions/hypotheses.

Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and include directed work with a specified client group or individual;
MA Research Skills;
Dissertation Proposal and Dissertation relevant to the programme being studied.
Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (eg Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (ie evidence of reflective practice).

MA Research Skills
This module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It aims to enable students to critically evaluate the statistical procedures that have been used by other quantitative researchers; design and statistically analyse their own true experiments, quasi-experiments and non-experimental hypothesis testing studies and appreciate the assumptions of qualitative research and demonstrate knowledge of data collection and analysis procedures.

Overview and Format of the MA Dissertation related modules
The goal of the Dissertation Proposal module is to fully prepare the student for successful completion of the subsequent MA Dissertation. Literature searching, presentation, and scholarly writing skills will be honed. To achieve this, the student will work along side a supervisor to identify a broad topic ripe for review. Upon development of an initial layout for the Dissertation, one or possibly two areas of the topic are reviewed. As such a deliberately narrow and abbreviated review is conducted better allowing the student to gain clear and progressive understanding of the levels of thoroughness and critical thinking associated with a MA Dissertation.

Students will receive tutorials and guidance in planning a literature search, identifying and gathering a literature, preparing a literature review, developing a dissertation proposal, and making an oral presentation of the proposal.

In their Dissertation module, students will compose a literature review and develop a proposition that they will advance as an argument. The resulting written report will demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the chosen topic.

Students also study an additional compulsory module in Higher Skills, plus choose two modules from:

Sport Psychology;
Effective Coaching;
Performance Physiology;
Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete.
The programme is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities, practical work, tutorials and role play. Each module comprises approximately 200 hours of student time (including formal contact).

Future Career
This course could enable students to develop their careers in a number of ways. The course is primarily aimed at students who wish to pursue sport or health related careers that do not involve conducting empirical research.

The MA is especially recommended to graduates who want to pursue a career in sport or health related fields, such as rehabilitation, coaching, leisure and fitness; pursue a career in related fields such as education and social services; give their CV an additional boost; explore a particular area of sport or health sciences in detail through researching and writing a literature review.

NB – This course is not appropriate for students wishing to progress onto academic research via a science based PhD.

The advent of this course is in response to the marked growth in career opportunities available to sports coaching scientists across a range of sporting clubs and organisations. The Master of Science in Leisure and Sport Management helps prepare individuals to lead leisure and sport organizations, to support the expansion of the leisure and sport industries, and to conduct research that advances the body of knowledge in these disciplines. Students choose between two concentrations: Recreation and Leisure Services or Sport Industry. Master's students complete either a thesis or a professional project/internship. An advanced doctoral degree with a specialization in Leisure Studies is also offered by the Department of Health and Human Performance. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships, scholarships, and doctoral fellowships are available in addition to other forms of financial aid.

Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level. Some of our graduates have gone on to secure jobs with England Netball, Southampton FC, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton FC, Bristol City FC, London Scottish RFC, Surrey County Cricket Club, amongst others.

Work placements
The course includes an extensive work placement module involving work related learning and the development of skills specific to the world of commercial sports performance analysis. As with other MSc programmes, this MSc been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests. It is intended that the skills learnt on this programme will enable students to apply theory to professional practice. The programme benefits from being taught by staff with a wide a range of physiological and psychological expertise.

Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Research Skills;
Independent Study (a one to one supervised programme of work leading to the development of the proposal for the Research Project);
Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and could include directed work with a specified client group or individual;
Research Project relevant to the programme being studied.
Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

Independent Study
The Independent Study should consist of a critical and concise review of the research literature pertaining to a particular research question. A rationale for the proposed research question must be provided, along with a sound methodology for exploring the research question, planned analyses, and expected outcomes. Further, anticipated problems such as resources, equipment, possible ethical issues, informed consent forms, a statement of feasibility of the project and expected costs must be discussed.

Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (eg Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (ie evidence of reflective practice).

Overview and Format of the Research Project module
The Research Project is an independent piece of research, and acts as the culmination of the academic challenges faced by the student. The module comprises 60 credits (i.e. equivalent to three double modules) and will formally equate to some 600 hours of student time.

Specifically, this will involve a review of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to the area of enquiry. The supervisor provides excellent expert guidance throughout the process.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

In addition to the core modules listed above, students undertake an additional compulsory Higher Skills module. On completion of this module students should be sufficiently knowledgeable and skilled to work in scientific and outdoor related disciplines. Due to current industry regulation and insurance requirements, the attainment of nationally recognised vocational qualifications is essential to gain employment in outdoor activities. This module will enable students to progress towards, or actually attain, National Governing Body (NGB) awards in outdoor activities. Pending approval of prior learning/experience, this module may not need to be pursued. However, an additional 20 credits would need to be studied instead.

Physical Education covers the six National Curriculum study areas of athletic activities, dance, games, gymnastic activities, outdoor and adventure activities, and swimming. The course also includes health-related exercise and the teaching of accredited courses in physical education which both constitute part of the repertoire of skills that the contemporary physical education teacher must possess.

The opportunity to undertake masters level study within the course facilitates progression to an MA Education award after completion of the PGCE.

The course comprises four strands: subject study/subject education, education studies, placements and professional development
The subject study/subject education strand builds upon existing subject expertise and provides students with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the specialist subject in the secondary school context, allowing them to formulate their own rationale for teaching. Students consider pedagogical issues within curriculum development, and the learning and teaching strategies pertinent to the specialist subject, regularly reflecting upon, analysing, recording and evaluating their own learning experience. Students have the opportunity to develop a creative and constructively critical approach towards innovation within their specialism, and the capacity to improve practice.
The Education Studies strand is common to all subject routes of the course and takes place both at the university and while on placement as a means of enabling students to develop practical competences supported by relevant, analytical skills.
Teaching under supervision, on placement, occupies approximately two-thirds of the course. The university works in partnership with schools and colleges to provide a high quality programme of support ensuring a sound relationship between theory and practice. There are two placements in two different schools/colleges with the opportunity to visit further schools/colleges as part of the 'Peer Observation' programme.

Professional Development is linked explicitly to all strands of the course and is designed to enable students to evaluate critically and reflect upon their learning in order to make improvements. Students are expected to gather and justify evidence of their achievements on a regular basis and, in the light of this, develop and implement improvement plans.
Career prospects are excellent: most gain their first teaching posts in secondary schools as soon as they qualify.

On this course you have the opportunity to take part in a number of activities to help in your development as a Physical Education teacher.
This reflects the nature of the role of the contemporary teacher of physical education and prepares you to teach a more reflective curriculum based on individual needs and pupil activity choices in schools. These activities include:

Inclusive festivals:
As part of your induction programme you prepare a series of activities for pupils with moderate, profound and multiple learning difficulties. Activities will include Boccia, New Age Kurling, Goalball, Parachute games and dance.
Gifted and talented days:
You will organise gifted and talented days for school pupils. You help pupils to identify and solve problems to overcome challenges of an adventurous nature. This includes activities in which success is judged on how efficiently and safely challenges are overcome.

Outdoor adventure days:
You will facilitate a day of onsite outdoor and adventurous activities for pupils. You learn how to teach realistic and achievable onsite outdoor and adventurous activities to secondary school pupils without the need to take pupils offsite or use specialist equipment and facilities.

Active student volunteer programmes:
With the Active Student volunteer programme you provide out-of-school-hours activities for local primary school pupils. The activities include swimming, lifestyle activities, trampolining and gymnastics.

Orienteering festivals
As part of the Outdoor Education module you will arrange and manage an orienteering festival for pupils in a local park. You learn how to facilitate and manage a large sporting event whilst at the same time gaining important professional experience of teaching orienteering skills and techniques to pupils.

Team building days:
You will organise team building days for school pupils. Pupils will take part in a series of physical challenges and activities that promote communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making through trust games, orienteering, and team building.

Alternative activities:
On alternative activities days you teach secondary school pupils a variety of alternative activities including Kinball, Street Surfing, Rockitball, Goalball, and teaching and learning using the Nintendo Wii.

Physical Education interview days
Potential students who would like to teach Physical Education in Secondary Schools will be invited for an interview before an offer is made. The interview will have both a practical and formal element.

Drawing on academic and industry expertise from around the world, this course is designed to meet the sports events management requirements of organisations that bid for, and deliver, sporting fixtures of all sizes - from the Olympic Games to the Leeds Half Marathon.

You will address the challenges facing sports events managers, including the increasing pressure to meet the demands of global governing bodies, how to manage a volunteer workforce, secure appropriate sponsorship packages, reduce risks and ensure the health, safety and security of every stakeholder.

For International Students who want to improve their English and academic skills we offer a combined masters course with the MSc Sports Events Management. If you have an IELTS score of 5.0 or 5.5 you can study for two semesters before starting your postgraduate degree. Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Nicola has several years' experience within the global events industry and continues to work in the Middle East and North Africa region to deliver CPD to future event managers of mega sports events in such emerging markets. She brings a wealth of expertise to her teaching and has been imparting such knowledge for nearly 10 years at the University. She published a book in 2014 on the sports events industry with colleagues from UKCEM entitled, 'Sports Events, Society and Culture'.
