Unique in Europe, and one of only a few in the world, this internationally respected MSc programme offers you the chance to develop a holistic approach to outdoor education with a specific emphasis on environmental and sustainability education. This programme will prepare you for a career in which you will facilitate learning that focuses on themes of environmental, sustainability, and ecological education.

There are three possible exit levels: Certificate (60 credits), Diploma (120 credits), or Masters (180 credits). The Certificate programme provides a broad theoretical coverage of the field of study. The Diploma extends this with further academic study and a Professional Development Programme (involving field courses, such as a canoe descent of the River Spey, introduction to group leadership and navigation techniques, a teaching placement/practicum, and a group project), which provides a broad base for a professional career in outdoor environmental and sustainability education. The Masters extends this further still with a dissertation and associated research methods course.

The emphasis — whether Certificate, Diploma, or Masters — is on developing the knowledge, understanding, and judgement necessary to facilitate meaningful learning in, for, and through the outdoors. You will consider a range of connected subject areas as well as the particular demands for teaching these in a variety of settings, from schools, residential centres, and Ranger sites, to charitable/not-for-profit organisations.

You will develop your intellectual skills through critically assessing theoretical, professional, and academic issues while honing transferable skills such as environmental literacy and oral communication. You will also expand your understanding and personal practice of educating outdoors through a range of professional development activities.

Courses take place at our Edinburgh campus and the University’s two residential outdoor centres in the highlands of Scotland, from where you will journey by boat or on foot to live and learn in the outdoors.

This programme is affiliated with the University's Global Environment & Society Academy.

Programme structure

Learning will take the form of lectures, seminars, group discussions, student presentations, field courses, self-study, and work experience/practicum.

For the Postgraduate Certificate you will complete the following courses:

  • Outdoor Environmental Education: Concept-based Practice (20 credits)
  • Interpreting the Landscape (20 credits)
  • Ecology and Field Studies (20 credits)

For the Postgraduate Diploma, in addition to the above courses, you will complete:

  • Education for Environmental Citizenship
  • Introduction to Learning for Sustainability
  • Experiential Education (10 credits)
  • Sources of Knowledge (10 credits)

For the Masters, in addition to the above courses, you will complete:

  • Research Methods – Planning Research (10 credits)
  • Dissertation (50 credits)

For the Masters and Diploma you will complete a four-week professional placement/practicum, a five-day canoe descent of the River Spey, a three-day land-based group leadership and navigation course, a two-day specialist outdoor first aid course, a group designed, week-long ‘Environmental Education in Practice’ practicum project, and the opportunity to opt-in to other professional development courses (eg. sea kayaking) from the MSc Outdoor Education programme at an additional cost.

The Masters and Diploma programmes can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The Certificate is by nature a part-time programme of study.

Career opportunities

This industry-recognised qualification will allow you to take on roles in outdoor environmental and sustainability education in a variety of settings from schools, to community education, private organisations, or charitable/not-for-profit organisations.

Completion of the MSc degree will enable you to continue onto advanced research, and a possible academic career. However, you will also develop highly transferable skills, such as communication and project management, which can be applied in any field.

Work placement/internships opportunities

To facilitate and broaden direct experience of teaching outdoors, course members undertake a 4-week professional placement. The placement occurs at a stage in the programme when students are able to make a useful contribution to the agencies they choose to work with and are able to relate their experience to theoretical material covered in class. Placement agencies range from those focusing on environmental education, to inner city projects, special needs organisations, management training, outdoor education centres, and many more.

The Postgraduate Elite Coaching Practice programme is an exciting collaboration between UCLan and Pentagon Sport (the Rugby Football League, English Hockey Board, English Table Tennis Association, English Basketball Association). This successful partnership has seen this postgraduate diploma course recognised as the first endorsed level 4 UK Coaching Certificate. If you hold responsibility or interest in developing and improving your team’s performance, as either a coach or manager, the Elite Coaching Practice course is for you. There are two possible pathways that you can choose. The first is elite performance, and focuses on the development of the very best performers and maximising their potential in competition. The second pathway, talent development is focused on maximising the development of athlete throughout the talent pathway, from children to elite athletes.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The PGDip Elite Coaching Practice is a dynamic course that aims to develop your critical understanding of the theories and practice of Sports Coaching. The UK Coaching Framework is well underway and the predominant aim of this strategy is to become the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. One feature of the implementation plan is the development of the UK Coaching Certificate. In order to achieve the high standards expected of such a system, it will require highly skilled and knowledgeable individuals to develop it over the next 5-6 years. Consequently the main emphasis of this programme is placed on developing a range of intellectual, professional, managerial and transferable attributes that are essential for the modern sports coach.

The underpinning philosophy of the PGDip Elite Coaching Practice is to create an education which is intellectually and academically challenging but is also clearly focused on the vocational needs of the sports coaching industry, generating practitioners who can challenge and develop existing systems and processes. It aims to challenge current practice and provide a platform to experiment and innovate. The PGDip Elite Coaching Practice programme has been designed to provide a high quality educational experience for existing UKCC level 3 coaches within the sports sector. Emphasis throughout the programme is therefore placed on developing your critical reflective and analytical skills from both a theoretical and applied perspective.

This course has been designed to thoroughly prepare you for a diverse range of career opportunities, from leading international expeditions, coaching and performance enhancement to sports management, public services and a wide range of roles within the outdoor leadership industry. Students and graduates have gone on to work in New Zealand, the Himalayas, USA and India, while others have opted to continue their studies at postgraduate and master’s level.

You will have a wealth of opportunities to work both at home and overseas during your time at UCLan. Each autumn, major employers such as PGL, Acorn, Camp America and CCUSA recruit directly from the cohort offering students the opportunity to have summer experience guaranteed by late February. CCUSA offer students the chance to sign up for skill specific placements with incremental responsibilities and the opportunity to apply for internships upon graduation.

Our aim is to develop teachers with a specialist understanding of how children aged between three and seven learn. You will develop children's abilities through playful learning and creative teaching, and you will reflect on how your teaching methods and the opportunities and environments you create can influence outcomes.Your training will involve a particular focus on outdoor play and learning. You will have the opportunity to attend a forest school workshop using our outdoor classroom, where you will learn different techniques to bring learning to life and spark your pupils' imaginations.

As a primary school teacher, you will work closely with teaching assistants, parents and complex teaching teams to deliver a range of activities. We will give you the skills and confidence to manage these relationships to ensure you can deliver an outstanding learning experience for your class.

We will develop your knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum to ensure your teaching fulfils the requirements set out by the Government. With an emphasis on mathematics, English and Science at both Key Stages, you will embrace all curricular areas of learning and principles of best practice in early childhood education.

You will put your theoretical knowledge into practice. As part of your training, you will complete three teaching placements in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, developing your teaching skills across different age ranges and helping to prepare you for future employment. Throughout these placements you will gain the specialist knowledge and teaching skills required to meet the needs of pupils in the three to seven age range.

One of your most important tools as a teacher will be your voice. You will learn how to use it effectively when addressing large groups of children and how to look after it. You will benefit from our multimedia studios equipped with drawing boards, computers and model-making facilities, a state-of-the-art library, specialist workshops and a Landscape Resource Centre, which features experimental gardens.

This course is accredited by the Landscape Institute and will enable you to become a graduate member of the Institute.

We offer two routes for studying our course. Firstly, if you have an undergraduate degree in a related area to landscape architecture we will give you a thorough grounding in the subject, including design processes, urban and rural landscape design and landscape technology.

You will undertake a comprehensive landscape architecture project and join specialist design studios in ecological, community and urban design as well as studying contemporary landscape theory. At the end of the course you have the option to join an advanced landscape architecture studio which when complete provides you with a fully accredited MA and eligibility for graduate membership of the UK Landscape Institute. This can take a further six months for full-time and 12 months for part-time students.

The alternative route is if you already have an undergraduate qualification in Landscape Architecture. Our course is an opportunity to enrol for a fully accredited MALA or to top-up your qualification into an MA when you have completed a postgraduate diploma. You will have the opportunity to undertake a project of your choosing, and relevant to your interests, in order to achieve this.

Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. Your initial training will be based around developing your own personal vision of geography, which will feed into your teaching style by drawing on influences of your own geographical background and knowledge.

We will encourage you to take an enquiry-based approach to learning, actively posing questions and investigating geographical issues through exploring and questioning.

You will be taught how to use a range of geographical resources through practical tasks, including maps and atlases, photographs and images, meteorological equipment, geographical media and cultural artefacts. Developing your understanding of key geographical practical resources and equipment and how they are used will enable you to then enhance your pupils' learning.

You will have the opportunity to participate in and lead outdoor field experiences which will investigate physical and human geography. These experiences will develop your understanding of how to infuse classroom-based learning with practical outdoor sessions.

We will develop your understanding of core and foundation subjects such as English, mathematics and science so that you can confidently teach these subjects across the 5-11 age range. At the same time, we will build your knowledge of how children learn so that you can create tailored and effective lessons.

The most effective teachers not only possess strong teaching skills but see themselves as researchers, constantly looking at new practices and assessing their own teaching methods. Self-analysis will be a fundamental aspect of your training. You will observe a learning environment and then evaluate it, unpicking different elements to develop your understanding of diverse teaching practices and techniques. This critically reflective approach will be embedded in all aspects of your training, and should prove a useful tool to use throughout your teaching career.

We will develop your understanding of how a school functions outside of the classroom so that you are not only able to manage your class but also contribute to the successful running of the organisation.

You can choose from two different training models.

University-led: You will develop your theoretical knowledge at our Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Your learning will be informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

We have more than 100 years' experience of teacher training and you'll be supported by an experienced course team determined to see you flourish as an innovative primary school teacher. You will become part of a supportive teaching and learning community, where you will be able to pick up advice and tips from your course tutors and share ideas on lesson plans and classroom experiences with your fellow students.

Helping you to develop your confidence, identity and style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will form a fundamental element of your training.

Regardless of which training model you follow, you will gain substantial training in a school environment. Assessment

Assessment of the summer research project/internship consists of four elements, with individual criteria:
1. Interim report (10%, 1500 – 3000 words) – The purpose of this report is to provide a mechanism for supervisors to provide valuable feedback on the project’s objectives and direction.

2. Poster Presentation (15%) – A vital skill of an engineer is the ability to describe their work to others and respond to requests for information. The poster presentation is designed to give you an opportunity to practise that.

Employment prospects are excellent, with recent graduates working in power engineering consultancy, global power utilities (generation, supply and distribution), the renewable energy sector and manufacturing. They've taken up professional and technical positions as electrical engineers, power systems specialists, distribution engineer and asset managers in large energy utilities such as Iberdrola, EDF Energy and China State Grid.
