The centrepiece of the Arts MRes is an extended written Dissertation, or for practice-based researchers, a major Practical Project supported by a written dissertation component. The Arts MRes welcomes students from a wide range of interests. Whether your project is focussed on the history and theory of art and design, film and television, fine art or performance practice, or wider aspects of visual and material culture, you will be supported by a supervisory team with expertise in your subject.

Your supervisors will be academic specialists with in-depth knowledge of the critical issues relating to your topic, hands-on experience in appropriate research methodologies, and a highly regarded reputation of publishing scholarly materials, or exhibiting or performing works.Arts staff have specialist knowledge in Fine Art and Performance practice, art and design theory, film and television studies, curating, landscape, architecture, fashion, socially engaged arts, and digital arts practices.

Furthermore, if your project spans disciplines, your supervisory team may include staff members from different departments. Whatever your interests, you will be supported by the expertise of highly research-active staff whose work is of recognised excellence.

Teaching And Assessment

The Arts MRes is based around self-directed study, but you are supported by a framework of three modules. Research Methods and Critical Contexts in semester one are based around a series of seminars, and encourage the discussion and exchange of ideas between students with focussed research interests, but shared intellectual investment in the themes, concepts, practices and methods of visual and material culture. Assessment is through written assignments totalling 6000 words, or a smaller written element supported by materials for practice-based students (30 credits per module).

The semester two Research Development module is shared with students from MRes Humanities courses, to collaborate in all elements of organising (structuring, fundraising, marketing and publicity) and staging a cross-disciplinary symposium. You are assessed on a written paper, and a presentation at the symposium (totalling 30 credits). The culmination of your Arts MRes project is a final 20,000 word dissertation, or 10,000 word dissertation and body of work for practice-based students (90 credits).

Learning Environment

The Arts MRes will embed you in a vibrant postgraduate research culture, in which the formal framework of academic learning is enhanced by a multitude of opportunities to develop your specific research interests and skills, and widen the scope of your scholarly development. The modules themselves are based around seminars which encourage discussion and the exchange of ideas between researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

In addition you have access to specialist postgraduate training workshops, and events both on and beyond the campus. Fine Art practice-based students have access to studio space at the Baltic 39 studios, and all students are continually informed of events and opportunities of special interest to their research through the electronic learning portal, while regular individual tutorials with project supervisors will enable you to develop your project effectively.

Overall the Arts MRes provides a learning environment in which disciplined and self-directed academic rigour is enhanced by opportunities for the interdisciplinary pollination of ideas.

With a student-focused course of study, supported by supervisors specifically chosen to compliment your project, research is embedded in the Arts MRes course from your initial project proposal, and you will be encouraged think about, develop, evaluate and refine your research approaches throughout the programme. The context underpinning this MA is the need to understand and respond to the problems and challenges generated by the UK’s diverse society. Cultural and religious diversity is capable of promoting a culturally rich, open-minded society able to draw on a wide range of perspectives in confronting social, economic and political challenges at local, national and international levels. Conversely, a diverse society has the capacity to harbour deep divisions which can lead to problems of ghettoisation, social and political disengagement, inequality, resentment, mistrust, insecurity and discrimination. The need to address such difficulties and the aspiration to achieve a thriving diversity demands dialogue to increase interaction and understanding between different sectors of the community.

The MA in Dialogue Studies will provide Masters level teaching and experience catered to the demands of such efforts. It is intended to the equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to effectively engage in and lead meaningful dialogue advancing intercultural interaction, community cohesion and proactive citizenship. It aims to develop reflective practitioners and students of dialogue equipped to examine and evaluate theories of dialogue and carry them forward with appropriate adaptations and innovations. The structure of the MA in Dialogue Studies is as follows:

Teaching & Assessment

The programme has three components: taught modules in the 1st semester; a placement at the Dialogue Society in the 2nd semester; and a dissertation to be completed by a September deadline.

The taught modules consist of a number of weekly 2 hour seminars. These modules provide students with theoretical and substantive knowledge, key learning and research skills, and an opportunity to interact with staff and other students. Assessment will vary between modules but typically will involve presentations, coursework, and essays.

The placement with the Dialogue Society in the 2nd semester will allow students to gain experience working for an NGO. Students will be involved in planning, organising and evaluating seminars; planning, organising and evaluating community events; and attending Dialogue Society training events which provide key leadership and communications skills. The placement will be assessed by a reflective diary.

The dissertation will be on a topic of the student’s choice relating to intercultural dialogue, community cohesion, diversity, citizenship or conflict resolution. Students will be assigned supervisors who they will meet on a regular basis.

Students will be expected to buy textbooks for modules and additional costs may be incurred for travel to placement activities in London.

Comparative and international in focus, our programme is suitable both for career professionals and for recent social science graduates. It is built around core modules and options, and collaborative internships are also available to selected students. The core modules, some of which are taught with the MA Public Policy, are: Organisation and Management of the Public Services; Economics of the Public Services; The Policy Process; and Research Methods (quantitative and qualitative). Optional modules relate to specific public service areas, including health and education but also include in-depth modules on Comparative Public Policy; Strategic Management in the Public Services; and People Management and Leadership in the Public Services. You may take options from more than one area. (Some optional modules are provided by other departments. Places on such non-departmental options may be capped.)

There is an emphasis on effective provision of public services (including their evaluation) and on the lessons of the 'new public management'; by comparison, the MA Public Policy emphasises the analysis and understanding of the political process.

Seminars are central to our course and focus on current research and policy implementation. They involve senior policymakers and practitioners including individuals actively involved with current UK government policymaking. There is an active alumni network which organises events during the year, including seminars for current students.

Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.

The course is composed of three phases:

Phase 1 - teaches the core subjects of finance, economics and research methods
Phase 2 - introduces specialist modules in finance and banking
Phase 3 - is the dissertation that draws together the learning from the whole of the programme, allowing you to develop your research skills and capacity for critical analysis while creating a specialisation in a particular field of finance and banking

Completion of your final project (dissertation) takes place throughout the summer after teaching finishes. You submit your project in October and receive your MSc award in December.

Dissertation

In the final phase of the course, you will complete a dissertation relating to finance and investment.

The dissertation will be 10,000–15,000 words long. It will address a financial markets problem which will require you to undertake research leading to implementable recommendations based on sound analysis and judgment.

Alternatively, you may wish to carry out a more theoretical dissertation relating to a financial markets topic of personal interest. You will receive help from your appointed dissertation supervisor who will monitor and support your progress. The dissertation is submitted in October.

Real-time trading room

As part of your course you will have access to modern computing facilities and specialist computing packages, for students on the Market-making and Investment Strategies module this includes access to our real-time trading room, fed by up-to-the-minute data from Reuters.

One of a handful of such facilities across the UK, our trading room sessions are supervised by guest traders and provide you with the opportunity to apply your skills to real markets and real data, and make use of simulation software to recreate the pressure of a trading floor.

We also invite guest traders to discuss curriculum topics, pass on their trading experience and supervise trading sessions.

Student trading society

We highly recommend students join our thriving Student Investment and Trading Society, which is established and run by students for the purpose of organising social and networking events, arranging talks by visiting industry experts and facilitating annual trading competitions against other universities.

The MSc Process Systems Engineering programme will widen your understanding of the fundamental concepts of process systems engineering.

It will provide you with a thorough grounding in current technologies and trends that will prepare you will for a rewarding career and/or further research.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This Masters programme trains graduates of engineering, science or related disciplines in general and specialist process systems engineering subjects.

Such areas are not generally covered in engineering and science curricula, and BSc graduates tend to be ill prepared for the systems challenges they will face in industry or academia on graduation.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation. The following modules are indicative, reflecting the information available at the time of publication. FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

Graduates of this programme will be well prepared to help technology-intensive organisations make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by adopting, combining, implementing and executing the right technologies.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to provide a highly vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date. It also aims to provide the students with the necessary skills required for a successful career in the process industries.

This is achieved through a balanced curriculum with a core of process systems engineering modules supplemented by a flexible element by way of elective modules that permit students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme. The programme draws on the stimulus of the Faculty’s research activities.

The programme provides the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and understanding
-State-of- the-art knowledge in process systems engineering methods, in the areas of: modelling and simulation of process systems, mathematical optimization and decision making, process systems design, supply chain management, process and energy integration, and advanced process control technologies
-Advanced level of understanding in technical topics of preference, in one or more of the following aspects: renewable energy technologies, refinery and petrochemical processes, biomass processing technologies, and knowledge-based systems

Intellectual / cognitive skills
-Select, define and focus upon an issue at an appropriate level
-Collect and digest knowledge and information selectively and independently to support a particular scientific or engineering enquiry
-Develop and apply relevant and sound methodologies for analysing the issue, developing solutions, recommendations and logical conclusions, and for evaluating the results of own or other’s work
