About

The course has been designed to meet the needs of students wishing to understand the application of communication principles to healthcare contexts. This new course has specifically been designed to meet the needs of students who wish to gain a formal qualification in Communication Management in Healthcare. The target market for students is identified to include those working in communication positions or have communication related roles and responsibilities within a range of healthcare settings, including public, private and voluntary sectors. As increasingly more postgraduate students are working either full-time or part-time, the delivery of the modules needs to be more flexible (i.e. block teaching/short courses/online).

The course aims to facilitate a comprehensive and critical understanding of communication within healthcare and how this can be maintained through positive action at organisational and management levels. This is conceptualized as occurring within a multi-level framework that encompasses a focus on individual issues, the needs of targeted groups and the wider societal and cultural context. This course provides for the development of critical, analytical and independent thinking and aims to facilitate the skills necessary for employment, academic progression and continuing professional development.

Attendance

Part-time

This programme is studied part time over a period within one academic year, i.e. 8 months (September – May).

Outline of delivery

To ensure that the programme is as flexible as possible for the students, they could complete the PgCert over one academic year, 8 months (September – May). Semester 1 consists of two 15 credit points modules, Managing Communication and Leadership and Management in Healthcare Communication. The Managing Communication module will be delivered as block teaching, i.e. four full days, while Leadership and Management in Healthcare Communication is fully online. In Semester 2, there is one 30 credit point module, Public Health Communication, which is delivered as block teaching during four full days. This module includes a work-based project in a communication department within a healthcare context (12 hours, as negotiated between the student and the organisation).

Work placement / study abroad

Work Based Project is included in the module CMM741 Public Health Communication.

Career options

This programme aims to facilitate the development of skills and knowledge pertaining to communication issues within a health context, and would therefore provide development opportunities towards furthering a career in a health-related profession with a communication remit or in communication within a healthcare context.

The different ways in which systemic leadership and consulting practices respond to organisational challenges and personal, relational and development issues is a key element of this course, which will help you develop insights into systemic organisational practice and theory.

In contrast to traditional methods of communication, digital media channels facilitate greater consumer interactivity and empowerment. In a highly competitive and connected global marketplace the unique properties of digital media communication can therefore present both opportunities and challenges for firms. Increasingly, communication professionals are expected to embrace digital media to encourage customer and partner engagement. Equally, professionals in technical roles are now required to apply their knowledge of digital media more strategically to drive business value.

Recognising the vital role of digital media for effective organisational and business communication, and the growing importance of open, collaborative working practices, this course combines expertise from both technical and communication disciplines to provide an enriching and multidisciplinary learning environment.

Specifically, this course will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • critically assess the changing communication and technology landscape to establish strong foundations and confidence in decision making in an ever changing digital environment

Attendance

Full-time students normally complete between two and three modules per semester. Modules are normally delivered in intensive block sessions, from 1.00pm until 9.00pm. The maximum number of intensive block teaching days per module is 4 (although not always on consecutive days), plus approximately 2 days x 3 hours seminar attendance. You will also be expected to engage in group and team work in some of your modules and so will need to have further meetings outside of class time. In addition, you are also expected to dedicate adequate time for independent study. Part-time students normally complete between one and two modules per semester.

While managerial positions often require the ability to conduct research or project-work and to demonstrate sustained and complex organisational skills in ways encompassed by this programme, its emphasis on oral and written communication skills as well as on IT-based presentation skills will be useful for many types of employment. Some students may want to take this course for its own sake and for the sake of personal development and the revitalization of subject awareness. Equally, the MRes is designed to prepare students too for further research at MPhil or PhD level, and to enable them to enter postgraduate study, thus offering a first step towards a career in academic teaching and research.

The advanced study of one or more Arts subject on this programme equips students with powers of fine discrimination and judgement that will set them apart in workplaces of many kinds. The programme is designed to provide skills required by adaptable, critically aware, communications workers in the exciting modern communications environment, which requires fluency in the use of strategic storytelling, content production and visual design.

A one-year Master's programme of 60 credits, Strategic Communication is a programme designed for students with different subject backgrounds within the wide field of communication. Bringing together different skills, students develop a critical understanding of, and competence to implement, strategic communication. By strategic communication we mean professional communication aimed at satisfying long-term organisational and community goals.

Strategic Communication is designed to produce skills required in the modern communications environment, which demands flexible critical skills and a mastery of strategic storytelling, content production and visual design. It offers core skills that are transferable across the employment sector: sound research practice; clear and effective writing; critical thinking; a good understanding of design; deep understanding of how to use the web and social media for strategic purposes; and communicating with niche groups/markets.

The programme is comprised of two interrelated strands which run over the two semesters, one oriented to research and critical thinking, the other to building a portfolio of flexible interlocking practical skills. Much of the teaching is based on a flipped classroom method using video lectures, project-based work, individual preparation and tutoring tailored for each student's knowledge and experience.

During the first semester, you will develop an understanding of concepts in strategic communication such as PR, corporate communication, brand management, and political communication. The communications industry is changing in such a way that marketing and PR are increasingly integrated, the use of digital storytelling and moving images grows, and new roles are introduced. The changes require new kinds of thinking and brings at the same time exciting possibilities for those equipped with the knowledge to take advantage.

You will also develop skills in content production. During the first half of the semester, we develop efficient use of language, images, and design. During the second half of the semester we continue with audio and video production along with scriptwriting. In the second semester, students carry out a larger research project that concerns the communication of one or several organisations. There will be classes on research methods and how these should be applied as well as one-to-one supervision for individual projects. During this semester, practical skill development moves on to web-design and online layout, and several skills and modes of communication are integrated in a project.

Throughout the programme, students work individually, in pairs, as well as part of a team both when carrying out research and when doing content production. All skills are assessed formally although important principles for this programme include creative learning through "trial and error", independence and responsibility.

The language of instruction is English and applicants need to be proficient in the English language to be eligible for admission.
