MSc Organisational Change and Development aims to develop graduates who are capable of contributing to organisational change, and development initiatives/activities, in developing and transitional economies.

Drivers including economic crisis, structural adjustment, competition and technical innovation require organisations in developing and transitional economies to change and develop on an ongoing basis. This course satisfies the growing need for staff who can make a difference in this area.

You will learn from highly experienced lecturing staff who have extensive international experience, and benefit from in-depth overseas fieldwork that involves private, public and not-for-profit organisations.

Aims

The course is aimed at individuals involved in processes of organisational change and development in developing and transitional economies. You are likely to have a professional interest in management and human resource issues, as reflected in the content of the core and optional course units.

In previous years, participants have been drawn from a variety of backgrounds, including managers, administrators, consultants and professional practitioners. Past participants have also been drawn from the public, private and NGO sectors.

The aim of this course is to develop you into a more effective agent of organisational change and development, by providing you with new analytical capacities, skills and knowledge. By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the academic and theoretical basis of organisational change and development.
  • Develop realistic HR strategies that contribute to effective organisational change and development interventions.
  • Contribute positively to organisationally-based initiatives through the effective diagnosis, planning, management and implementation of organisational change and development interventions.
  • Engage in specific specialist processes of organisational change and development.
  • Synthesise new and existing knowledge by undertaking academic or specialist organisational change and development research.

Special features

The course includes a fieldtrip to a UK or overseas destination, giving you practical experience of the issues discussed in class. During the visit, you also have the opportunity to discuss course topics with specialists and professionals in the field. The cost of the fieldtrip is included in the course fee.

Teaching and learning

Part-time Study

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months.  There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

The taught elements of the programme, carrying 120 credits overall is continuously assessed by a variety of methods (project based reports, essays), involving largely individual submissions, but also elements of group work.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation worth an additional 60 credits on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Directors. This dissertation usually addresses change and development issues and students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.

The Arthur Lewis Building provides excellent resources including analytical laboratories, studio facilities, workshops, seminar rooms, an on-site cafe and dedicated computer clusters including GIS facilities.

You will gain a deeper understanding of the global challenges and issues that are shaping the territory of change. You will discover how a change agent can intervene complex systems, co-create cultures of change and innovation for a better world, and be given practical tools to help lead change and innovation back in the workplace.

Organisations today have to deal with an increasingly heterogeneous workforce, due to developments such as migration, emancipation, ageing, and international cooperation. The inclusion of men and women, older and younger colleagues, people from different ethnic backgrounds, religions, various educational backgrounds and different sexual orientations has become an issue for employees and managers in modern organisations. To attract and retain a diverse workforce, to realize equal opportunities for all, and to create an inclusive organisation in which people’s needs for uniqueness and belongingness are met, are key challenges for organisations. Valuing all talent and using everyone’s full potential has beneficial effects for individuals, organisations and society.

In the Master's specialisation in Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Management, we focus on the role and function of gender and diversity in the workplace, connecting what happens in organisations to the underlying power processes in politics and society. We study how organisations produce different structural inequalities (regarding gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, age, disability), and how these inequalities influence each other in organisational practice. We explore the processes and practices of organisational change in this area. The programme addresses questions about strategy, culture and identity, leadership, and the inclusion of multiple stakeholders in organisational change. We offer state of the art theoretical insights, an overview of current management practices and provide a solid training in research methods to help you diagnose and solve policy problems, and design and implement organisational interventions.

It is advisable that students have done some courses or electives in the field of gender and diversity studies.

The MSc Geographic Information and Climate Change course provides cross-disciplinary training in the scientific basis of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Satellite Remote Sensing and Earth System Modelling alongside aspects of climate change.

The Geographic Information and Climate Change course places particular emphasis on the technical aspects of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Earth Observation as well as the past, present and future global and regional environmental and climatic change.

Graduates from the Geographic Information and Climate Change course will develop hands-on technical knowledge in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing together with a broad knowledge of the current scientific issues underpinning climate change, and the practical problem solving, ICT and communication skills required for a successful career in either industry or regulating bodies.

It is envisaged that graduates from the MSc Geographic Information and Climate Change course will enter careers in utilities, county councils, the environmental service industry or regulating body, or indeed be well prepared for a future career in academia.

Fieldwork

The Stackpole residential field course introduces students taking the “Principles of Environmental Dynamics” to some of the major themes of the module: environmental systems, sea-level change and human impact on the environment, in a congenial setting in Pembrokeshire. The environmental issues facing the Stackpole Estate are discussed and placed into a historical perspective through lectures and the analysis of long term environmental records.

The Department of Geography is well-resourced to support research: there are two dedicated computer laboratories: One of 24 computers in conjunction with Library and Information Services (LIS) providing general IT software and programmes dedicated to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing; One of 10 high-performance Linux workstations delivering software tools for advanced GIS and remote sensing applications.

We have specialist laboratory suites for: stable-isotope ratio analysis; tree ring analysis; extraction and identification of organic compounds; pollen extraction and analysis; rainfall simulation; tephra analysis; soil and sediment characterisation.

In addition, we have recently spent £1.8million on state-of-the-art teaching spaces, including IT facilities, laboratories and flexible teaching spaces.

The different ways in which systemic leadership and consulting practices respond to organisational challenges and personal, relational and development issues is a key element of this course, which will help you develop insights into systemic organisational practice and theory.

This course combines two of the most exciting areas of management and leadership. It provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary for leading the practice of change and harnessing innovation.

Key to the course's philosophy is the connection between change and innovation and a focus on futures-oriented processes.

The course is designed to fit around your personal and professional commitments. It is taught in seven teaching blocks and you can choose to spread the course over a few years or complete it quickly in less than two years. Courses start in September, January and April.

This masters course will develop your knowledge of public policy, so you'll gain a better understanding of how policies are made and then implemented on the ground. With the help of your dissertation supervisor you'll work on finding the appropriate scope and focus for your project, and develop a workable structure. You'll also receive feedback on draft chapters and guidance on conducting your literature review and any further research.

Your dissertation is worth 40 credits and will be 12,000 words long.
