This course involves the study of individuals and groups within organisational and social contexts, and the study of internal processes and practices as they affect those individuals or groups. International Marketing: The globalization of companies is the involvement of customers, producers, suppliers, retailers and other stakeholders in the global marketing process. International marketing reflects the trend of companies selling products and services across national boundaries. This module provides an overview of contemporary international marketing issues and trends as well as the international marketing planning process. On completion, students will be conversant with the theories, instruments, realities, debates and recent developments in the field, and be capable of researching, devising and applying solutions to key decisions regarding international market entry strategies and the development and management of global brands.

Consumer Behaviour in a Global & Digital World: This module will introduce students to the main theories which purport to explain consumer behaviour from the perspective of gaining an understanding of the consumer as an individual as well as how consumers are influenced by their cultural environment. Given that the internet has become an essential part of modern day life this module will provide students with an understanding of how consumer behaviour is impacted as a result of changes in the way goods and services are marketed and sold online. This module also examines the critical issues and trends whereby the internet has changed consumer behaviour spanning across traditional/geographic boundaries.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

International Marketing Communication: This module examines the processes by which integrated marketing communications (IMC) programs are planned, developed and executed. Individual communication vehicles included in an Integrated Marketing Communication plan are explored.

Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of management and business through modules in accounting and finance, strategy, organisational behaviour and leadership, decision-making and analytics, marketing, and operations. Several modules also explore how business is impacted by technology and another module explores the challenges and opportunities facing companies in China. Optional modules focus on finance, entrepreneurship, marketing, and human resources.

Students undertake modules to the value of 210 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), three optional modules (45 credits), and a business research project (60 credits).

The optional module Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Europe is taught at the UCL Canary Wharf campus in London over three weeks in the summer.

Business Research Project

All students undertake a business research project that culminates in a dissertation or business plan of a maximum of 12,000 words (60 credits). The research project should investigate a management or business issue and can be undertaken with a company.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and project work. Assessment is through open-book and unseen written examinations, individual and group coursework including presentations, reports, and essays, class participation, and the business research project.

MSc Management with 14 weeks Work Placement (Optional)
The MSc Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a compulsory work placement component of 14 weeks which allows students to take their learning outside the classroom and pairs them with companies in the UK.

Brunel Business School is amongst the first few Business Schools in the UK to introduce postgraduate placements for students completing their Masters programmes as far back as 2011. This feature, pioneered in the UK for undergraduate students by Brunel University, is becoming more popular amongst more mature students, for whom such a placement can often serve as a springboard to often extremely competitive labour market. Postgraduate work placement employers cover all related expenses with many also providing a salary.

Teaching

As an active research university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures. Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the school.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examination assignments place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these various skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design in detail and execute a major project.

Assessment may include some numerical analysis tasks as well as reporting on published financial data.

It has gained credibility and has spread worldwide and is the preferred way of banking for one fifth of the world's population. This taught MBA offers an opportunity to study the structure of the Islamic banking and finance industry, including its theoretical foundations, products, performance, Islamic financial instruments and risk management issues. Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

Islamic Finance: This course provides an insight into topical issues relating to Islamic financial instruments and related risk management issues. The first part of the course examines issues relating to financial contracting, instruments and various intermediation issues. The second part of the course focuses on the role of the capital market in providing Islamic financing and highlights financial engineering issues and well as risk management features of this type of business.

Islamic Banking: This module provides an insight into the key features of Islamic banking business. The first part of the course outlines the theoretical foundations and development of Islamic banking practices. In particular, the main characteristics of various types of Islamic banking products are discussed. The second part of the course examines the operational features of Islamic banks focusing on their performance and how they compete with conventional interest-based banks. The final part of the course outlines contemporary challenges to Islamic banking business.

International Banking: This module examines the origins of international banking, the activities of international banks, the markets in which they participate, and the sources of risk. You will investigate the determinants of the efficiency of international banks, and evaluate the implications for banks' strategic decision-making.

International Strategic Management: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

Marketing Financial Services: This module surveys the tools of modern financial services marketing, focussing on the key methods of financial services marketing in the acquisition of customers and sale and distribution of financial services. Purpose

Credit and Security Law: The supply of credit is the lifeblood of industry but of course a lender will require security. This module will examine in detail the provisions relating to the regulation of the supply of credit to consumers and business.

International Corporate Finance Law and Merger Regulation Law: This module focuses on the study of leading case law and selected legislation, relating to international mergers and their financing from several common law countries such as the USA, Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as China, India and the EU.

International Commercial Arbitration: This module considers the theoretical and institutional structure of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, examines the legal framework within which disputes are resolved and reviews the practice of international commercial arbitration.

Consumer Law: This module focuses on the main areas of legal liability and the pitfalls that can arise if an organisation does not comply with the relevant consumer protection rules both in the UK and Europe.

Intellectual Property Law: This module addresses the fundamentals of intellectual property law, the definition and scope of copyright; the authorship, ownership, duration and qualification for copyright protection.

Competition Law: This module focuses on the theory and law of competition, focusing on UK competition law, and EU competition law relating to the control of restrictive practices, vertical and horizontal restraints and abuse of a dominant position. Comparative regimes, in particular that of the US, are examined.

Industrial Property Law: This module examines the history and development of industrial property law in the UK, EU and internationally. It covers the law relating to trade secrets, patents, copyrights, design rights and trademarks.

World Trade Law: This module studies aspects of the regulation of international trade through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation.

International Insurance Law: Insurance plays an important role in commerce and risk management. Insurance contracts are governed by the rules of general law of contract. The module explores the nature and scope of the contract of insurance, considers the general principles of insurance, and examines the relationships between parties to a contract.

International Taxation Law: This module studies the basic principles of income taxation of international transactions involving taxpayers of several European countries (including the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland), the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.

Employment Law: Modern employment law is complex, and imposes major compliance costs on employers. This module covers contract of employment, minimum wage legislation, discrimination against employees, and unfair dismissal actions before Employment Tribunals.

International orientation

The courses in this Master's programme are rooted in international scientific literature and are focused on the internatonal context. You can do your internship and/or thesis abroad or in (internatonal) organisations in the Netherlands, such as Trendsactive, Coca Cola, HaysSogeti (in Dutch), Philips and Nutrica. 

As our student, you are primarily responsible for finding your own internship organisation. The department of Social, Health and Organisational Psychology has a database of internship organisations and has an internatonal network you can use.

Programme objectives

You will gain specialised knowledge, skills and insights in the fields of Social Psychology, Health Psychology and/or Work and Organisational Psychology. Your development as an academic professional is of central concern.

As a Master's graduate, you will be able to analyse and propose interventions for social, health or organisational issues, such as:

  • integration and participation issues
  • consumer behaviour
  • employability of employees
  • innovation and performance in organisations
  • radicalisation
  • gender inequality
  • self-regulation issues
  • health-related behaviour
