Compared to the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science in Design for the Fashion System moves the attention from “product” design to “system” design that is the peculiarity of the Italian design. The main elements that characterize and distinguish the “Politecnico” education in fashion come from the culture of the made in italy, its connection with the fashion companies and its aim to combine tradition with innovation, crafts with technologies, heritage with progress, dreams with discipline.In particular, the course mission and goals focus on three aspects: development of integrated design skills (product- communication-service) orientated to the “fashion system”; development of knowledge of the fashion system and the relations between the various players, development of specific multidisciplinary knowledge concerning economic, humanistic, sociological and artistic disciplines.

This Master of Science programme’s aim is to train highly qualified designers able to manage the competitiveness of the Fashion System on an international scale, both in its product development systems and within the strategic processes of fashion companies. Fashion at Politecnico di Milano is strongly committed to research and innovation, binding together high craft and high tech, the artisanal vision with the technological one, manual processes with the most advanced digital modeling softwares, in order to give the student the capability to work in any reality of the fashion system. Intense laboratory courses are the core part of the crafting investigation. Master students are required to fulfill an internship period within qualified companies.

MA Design Management and Cultures combines academic study with creative and professional practice in a project-led curriculum that draws on a range of interdisciplinary perspectives from business and the arts.

The content of the MA Design Management and Cultures course reflects current knowledge, debates and issues within the discipline. Students will interrogate, through practical projects, a range of perspectives including: design research methods; design thinking for the cultural and creative industries; branding; the role of creative interventions in brand communications; trend forecasting; strategies for management of brand experiences; design for social needs and sustainability; project management; entrepreneurship and innovation; change management; and design leadership.

The course is designed to support employability and employer engagement by developing both transferable and industries specific high-level skills. There will be regular contact with industry professionals through studio and industry visits, live briefs and guest speaker and networking events.

MA Design Management and Cultures combines an understanding of management and organisation from perspectives drawn from business, the arts and humanities. The curriculum has a professional focus with a strong emphasis on the development of leadership, management, communication and analytical skills.

Structure

MA/Postgraduate Diploma Design Management and Cultures is a four term full-time programme (30 weeks for PG Dip, 45 weeks for MA). Taught within the School of Design at LCC, it is part of a suite of courses that includes MDes Service Design Innovation.

In the autumn term you will critically engage with ‘design thinking’ and concepts and theories of leadership and innovation and experiment with a range of interdisciplinary research methods.

At the start of the spring term you will take the collaborative unit, which is common to all courses at Masters level. Mid-way through the spring term you will consider how design management can bring about transformation within a global context, and explore the role of design in the creation of social, political and cultural meaning.

In the summer term you take the knowledge, skills and experience from the units studied to date on the course and synthesise these through the production of a self-directed major project and associated thesis.

On this programme you will learn how to build computational systems as well as the principles of design thinking and making.

Through case studies of real-life products you will apply your knowledge in a practical way, developing an understanding of what it takes to create, design and take a product to market.

In the face of the promise of untold growth we are now confronted by a harsh reality: that in the second decade of the 21st century the traditional model of ‘business as usual’ is no longer viable. In applying a range of approaches to designing and prototyping social ventures and models of organisation, the MDes in Social Innovation will equip you with a practice-based approach to embedding innovation in the area of sustainability, community resilience, corporate social responsibility, venture philanthropy and organisational agility. Working with a cross- disciplinary team of professionals, the course will allow you to learn about radical ideas, evolve these ideas and test them in a ‘lived’ organisational environment.

The MDes Social Innovation will demonstrate that many of the most successful designs, innovations and innovators have learned to operate across the boundaries between disciplines, sectors, organisations and traditional services.

The degree is made up of three parts: taught classes, work-based learning, and a research project. All of these elements are designed to apply theory and advanced practice to enhance current approaches to sound design for linear and interactive media.

The MSc Sound Design is delivered over either 18 or 30 months on a part time basis. All of the modules are delivered by distance learning. Emphasis is placed on cognisance with professional standards for the production and documentation of sound designs for linear and interactive media, and familiarity with a comprehensive set of methods of assessing listening experiences.

The course builds upon Edinburgh Napier University’s close contacts with internationally recognised professional sound designers for both linear and interactive media.

In the first year, you will study Advanced Professional Practice (APP) for three trimesters. This allows you to tailor your learning needs to those of your organisation or the relevant industries.
Within the first few weeks of this module, under the direction of your academic supervisor you will develop your own learning agreement, which defines the deliverables of this module. If you are an employee you will do this in negotiation with your organisation.

If you are freelance, you may either negotiate with key clients or discuss an equivalent with your supervisor. Your supervisor will mentor you throughout the three trimesters towards the achievement of the deliverables. You will provide a reflective journal on your learning.
During the first year, you will also study one module per trimester: sound design for linear media, listening and sound design for interactive media. These modules will be taken in the order determined by the date of entry to the course.

Each module is independent of the others. One objective of the APP module is for you to apply immediately, in your practice, the knowledge gained from these three taught modules. After successful completion of the year, you will be eligible for a PG Dip Sound Design. In the second year, you will complete your MSc dissertation in part time mode.

Year 2

Masters Dissertation

In this 60 credit module you will take control of your studies to produce a substantial piece of focussed academic research. Success in the dissertation module indicates an ability to work independently, so you are expected to take the initiative and manage your own project. In effect, you are undertaking independent research as an apprenticeship to an experienced academic supervisor.

This course provides education and training in selected weapons systems. The course is intended for officers of the armed forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry. It is particularly suitable for those who, in their subsequent careers, will be involved with the specification, analysis, development, technical management or operation of weapons systems.

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and will contribute towards an application for chartered status.

Overview

The Gun System Design MSc is part of the Vehicle and Weapons Engineering Programme. The course is designed to provide an understanding of the technologies used in the design, development, test and evaluation of gun systems.

This course offers the underpinning knowledge and education to enhance the student’s suitability for senior positions within their organisation.

Each individual module is designed and offered as a standalone course which allows an individual to understand the fundamental technology required to efficiently perform the relevant, specific job responsibilities. The course provides students with the depth of knowledge to undertake engineering analysis or the evaluation of relevant sub systems.

- Practical aspects of system integration.
- Ammunition stowage, handling, replenishment and their effects on crew performance and safety.

Who is the course designed for?

The course is aimed at practising professionals with at least three years' work experience in the built environment. It is open to architects, engineers, and all those involved in commissioning, design, construction and management. It is offered by the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership in association with the Departments of Architecture and Engineering.

Teaching and learning

A design project relating to the theme of the week is undertaken in small interdisciplinary teams, which present their design proposals to reviewers at the end of each of the weeks. Through the design project students apply and implement what they have been taught, as well as benefitting from the knowledge and expertise of their team members; in this, the design projects support experiential learning.

Supervision and learning support

In preparing the four written assignments (4,000 word case study; one 3,000 word essay, one 7,000 word group project; and a 15,000 word thesis in the second year) students are supported by academic supervisors whom they meet on an individual basis.

Continuation

To continue to read for the PhD degree following the course, students must achieve an overall total score of at least 70%. Continuation is also subject to Faculty approval of the proposed research proposal, and the availability of an appropriate supervisor.

In addition to the academic entrance requirement, applicants need to have at least three years of professional experience in the built environment since graduating.

For designers and software developers wishing to deepen their knowledge and practice in user-centred design and usability evaluation of software enabled products. This may be software running on a desktop computer, PDA or mobile phone, or physical products with software enabled functionality. For good interaction design the interface must not only be effective and efficient, but increasingly should also be enjoyable and even pleasurable to use. This should be the case for users with a range of capacities operating in differing contexts. These are challenging goals!

The course enables students to: apply their knowledge and interaction design skills to novel interaction paradigms; make effective use of a broad range of design methods; obtain in-depth knowledge of developments in mobile, ubiquitous or wearable systems; and understand the commercial contexts in which interaction design takes place. There is lots of scope for students to follow their own interests within the course structure.

Course structure
The taught modules are delivered in blocks that are multiples of three weeks. They typically consist of preparatory activity, an intensive teaching period, and a period for completing assessed work. Several of the options allow self-directed study to develop an area of particular interest.

Students are expected to put in an average of 40 hours per week. During the final three months of the full-time course, the major project may be carried out in an external organisation.
