Dynamic centre of expertise

This programme is taught by the University's renowned Tizard Centre. An annual seminar series runs at which staff or guest lecturers present the results of research or highlight recent developments in the field of social care. The Jim Mansell Memorial Lecture invites public figures or distinguished academics to discuss topics that could interest a wider audience. The Centre also publishes the Tizard Learning Disability Review (in conjunction with Emerald Publishing) to provide a source of up-to-date information for professionals and carers.

The Tizard Centre provides consultancy to organisations in the statutory and independent sectors, both nationally and internationally, in diversified areas such as service assessment, person-centred approaches, active support and adult protection..

Careers

Our Applied Behaviour Analysis programme includes a course sequence approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Its completion, therefore, meets two of the requirements for certification as a Behaviour Analyst. Successful students will need to obtain appropriate supervised experience and pass the BACB exam. Many of our ABA students hope to take this career path, applying their skills either in work with children or adults with autism (ie early intervention programmes or in schools using an ABA approach) or with children/adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour is described as challenging. Every week we are asked to notify our students of opportunities in these fields. Our ABA programme is also suitable for parents of children/adults with autism or learning disability, who are looking to increase their own understanding of ABA.

Faculty

Animal behaviour research at Sussex is carried out in the School of Life Sciences and the School of Psychology, and encompasses both the proximate mechanisms and ultimate causes of animal behaviour. From ants, bees and cuttlefish to white sharks and lions, we work with a wide range of animals in our research.

The Postgraduate Diploma uses a unique combination of teaching and learning methods and emphasises practical skills and learning as well as developing a solid grounding in theoretical and applied concepts. This includes lectures, ‘capstone’ seminars (involving interactive staff and student discussion and debate), field visits, case study analysis, project-based fieldwork (one week is spent conducting research in a designated location on a designated topic), analysis of new food products in class, guest lectures, group work and web-based resources.

Most organisations have their fair share of fraud and corruption, and it affects all of us. As we know, what comes out in the press is the sharp tip of the iceberg. So, in these austere times, can we really accept to carry hidden costs and lose value through unethical behaviour perpetrated against us? At the School of Management we have decided to take a stand and teach what most business schools still do not teach... defence against the commercial dark side.

Properly combating fraud and corruption is still an elusive goal. Time and again we see people and apparently well-managed organisations subjected to major embarrassment, financial penalties or even bankruptcy as the result of inappropriate actions and failings by 'trusted' individuals. This course will help you to learn how to address the challenge; how you can ensure that you actively defend yourself and your organisation against the very real threats we would rather not see?

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Demystify fraud and corruption (what it is, who does it and why, what it costs us).
-Explore how to bridge the gap between anti-fraud and corruption and 'rhetoric' and the reality of the world we live in.

PREREQUISITE COURSES

Four prerequisite courses cover fields of study which provide you with the basic skills required to study subsequent courses:

Organisational Theory: Structure and Behaviour shows how various theories and models within the fields of organisational sociology and personality psychology may individually and in combination provide an expedient approach to creating an understanding of organisations as both structure and behaviour.

Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges. The course aims at providing an analytical framework for understanding emerging markets and their institutions. The importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. Overcoming these liabilities must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.

Management Research Method focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. This is a sine qua non issue for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background. The course introduces a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas. Focus will first be on the philosophical issues pertaining to the creation of valid knowledge. In the second part focus will be on techniques for data collection and analysis. These techniques include qualitative as well as quantitative approaches.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Organizational Change and Development concerns changes in organisations from a broad perspective. Analytically the course distinguishes between organisational, group and individual level. Changes are investigated with the use of classical as well as more recent theoretical models and practical tools. The course aims to give you a theoretical insight into the topic of change management. Moreover cases are used for practical application of different change models, through which strategic, structural and human issues are integrated. Central elements in the course are:

— Theoretical insight into management of change

— Analysing and diagnosing the need for changes in specific case organisations

— Choosing between types of interventions and strategies for implementation

— Human aspects of implementation (e.g. management, communication, motivation, training)”

Strategy and Business Development seeks to train your ability to apply central strategic tools for diagnostic purposes and subsequent business development in connection with the resolution of managerial aspects of development issues at a strategic level.

Leadership aims to provide insights into personal aspects of management, including issues such as shared, virtual, and team leadership.

Entrepreneurship enables you to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of new enterprises. You must be able to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challenges.

Human Resource Management and Development will give you a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation. The course aims to train your ability to identify and understand different HRM issues and dilemmas within the field, and also in different forms of organisations. The course will also deal with International HRM.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

This specialist pathway will enable you to engage in a critical dialogue about the strategic importance of human resource management (HRM) in international firms, and gain insights into contemporary issues in HRM, such as diversity management, talent management and E-HRM. You will be taught by staff from both research and practice backgrounds.

The business context for managing human resources has changed significantly in recent years due to economic, political, social and technological forces. Competition in global business has led to significant interest and research into which HRM policies and practices lead to enhanced organisational performance. Another area of strategic focus for HRM, within multinational companies in particular, is the ease and speed at which knowledge can be developed and disseminated.

This course will provide you with internationally applicable business skills, particularly in HRM, which have become essential for business leaders in the current market. You will develop your analytical skills, creativity and independent thinking about the way in which HRM can shape organisational performance in the context of continuous change and the globalisation of business.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge in international business across a range of areas including finance, and prepare you for work in an international organisation.

Content

During this course you will develop your understanding of the theory and practice of different research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, in business. You will learn to assess how the external business environment will affect your business, and develop strategies for responding to this.

You will complete an investment portfolio exercise which will help to develop your knowledge of international finance, and an insight into the challenges facing bankers, policy makers, regulators and investors in financial markets.

The business environment is very much international these days, which makes global and inter cultural working a reality. Businesses need to be effective at managing people from an international perspective, during this course you will look at organisation behaviour and human resources management with a focus on the continuous change and the increasing globalisation of business and management practice.

You will also examine what it means to be a human resource professional, and the contribution that this area makes to organisational performance. You will also develop a critical perspective on contemporary human resources management within global business.

As an MSc student, you will be required to complete a dissertation which will allow you to apply all the understanding, knowledge, analytical and conceptual tools that you have gained from your modules.

Students will also have the option to take a module of their choice which might focus on ethics, managing a diverse workforce or project management.

Our intensive MSc Psychology (Conversion) programme is designed to provide students with a grounding in the theories and research practice of contemporary psychology.

It is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and places particular emphasis on the application of psychology to real-world problems, based on a combination of pure and applied research.

Programme overview

This competitive programme is aimed primarily towards people wishing to pursue a career in any field of psychology. It prepares students for their professional journey by helping them develop a broad knowledge base across the key areas of psychology in a contained period of time.

As a student, you will learn about the core areas of psychology, such as social, developmental and cognitive psychology, biological bases of psychology, and individual differences.

In addition, you will acquire statistical and research methods skills needed to conduct, under expert supervision, your independent research project on a topic of your choosing.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

Altogether, the MSc is worth 180 credits:

  • 15 credits for each of the four modules in semester one and two
  • 60 credits for the MSc Dissertation
