Course Details

This course takes an interdisciplinary, problem-centred approach to teaching and learning. It also integrates an eight week work placement, giving you the opportunity to travel if you want to. You are qualified to take up a wide range of employment opportunities on graduation.


The Postgraduate Diploma uses a unique combination of teaching and learning methods and emphasises practical skills and learning as well as developing a solid grounding in theoretical and applied concepts. This includes lectures, ‘capstone’ seminars (involving interactive staff and student discussion and debate), field visits, case study analysis, project-based fieldwork (one week is spent conducting research in a designated location on a designated topic), analysis of new food products in class, guest lectures, group work and web-based resources.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Co-operative Organisation, Food Marketing and Rural Development is delivered over 9 months.

Students take 50 credits as follows:

FE6109 Co-operative Organisation: Theory and Concepts (10 credits)

Most organisations have their fair share of fraud and corruption, and it affects all of us. As we know, what comes out in the press is the sharp tip of the iceberg. So, in these austere times, can we really accept to carry hidden costs and lose value through unethical behaviour perpetrated against us? At the School of Management we have decided to take a stand and teach what most business schools still do not teach... defence against the commercial dark side.

Properly combating fraud and corruption is still an elusive goal. Time and again we see people and apparently well-managed organisations subjected to major embarrassment, financial penalties or even bankruptcy as the result of inappropriate actions and failings by 'trusted' individuals. This course will help you to learn how to address the challenge; how you can ensure that you actively defend yourself and your organisation against the very real threats we would rather not see?

The aims and objectives of the course are to:

-Demystify fraud and corruption (what it is, who does it and why, what it costs us).
-Explore how to bridge the gap between anti-fraud and corruption and 'rhetoric' and the reality of the world we live in.
-Learn how to spot fraud, and develop your own fraud and corruption risk assessment which represents a true picture of what could be happening (in your organisation).

Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges. The course aims at providing an analytical framework for understanding emerging markets and their institutions. The importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. Overcoming these liabilities must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.

Management Research Method focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. This is a sine qua non issue for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background. The course introduces a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas. Focus will first be on the philosophical issues pertaining to the creation of valid knowledge. In the second part focus will be on techniques for data collection and analysis. These techniques include qualitative as well as quantitative approaches.


Organizational Change and Development concerns changes in organisations from a broad perspective. Analytically the course distinguishes between organisational, group and individual level. Changes are investigated with the use of classical as well as more recent theoretical models and practical tools. The course aims to give you a theoretical insight into the topic of change management. Moreover cases are used for practical application of different change models, through which strategic, structural and human issues are integrated. Central elements in the course are:

Entrepreneurship enables you to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of new enterprises. You must be able to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challenges.

Human Resource Management and Development will give you a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation. The course aims to train your ability to identify and understand different HRM issues and dilemmas within the field, and also in different forms of organisations. The course will also deal with International HRM.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

One year university-based study blocks

This course contains four modules that must be completed to achieve the Postgraduate Certificate and the BIFM Level 7 Diploma. On successul completion of these four modules, you may wish to consider transferring to the Executive MBA in Facilities Management (the modules represent the first year of the Executive MBA).

Each module involves a three-day study block and self-managed study time.

This flexible attendance means that the course has minimal impact on your work or personal time and you can be based anywhere in the UK or overseas.

Advanced study and research in this degree focuses on innovation and change through three interconnecting themes: innovation and work practices, innovation and strategic change, and organisation theory. One taught module is provided in each of these areas. You also have the option to either write a dissertation or an extended research project, and take modules in research methods and taught electives. The MPhil ISO degree offers a route to a PhD.

Learning Outcomes

Educational aims of this programme are:

  • to give students, with relevant experience at first-degree level, the opportunity to carry out focused research under close supervision in the fields of strategy, organisational behaviour and information systems relevant to innovation; and
  • to give students the opportunity to acquire or develop skills and expertise relevant to their research interests.


Following their application for PhD continuation by the end of the first term, students will be interviewed by a panel of faculty members early in the second term. The PhD admissions committee will make PhD admission decisions on the basis of the interview report, the strength of the overall application with particular weight on academic reference letters and the performance in the Michaelmas term MPhil courses, and the fit of the student's research interest with faculty expertise. Students will receive confirmation of a PhD offer in February.

All admitted PhD students are fully funded. PhD offers are usually conditional on the final performance on the MPhil – candidates are required to achieve over 70 per cent in their MPhil. Students are also required to achieve at least 70 per cent in their dissertation (if any).

Course content

The aim of this course is to develop you as an HR professional. You will be introduced to specialised knowledge and research evidence giving you an in depth understanding of successful people management in organisations. Perhaps more importantly, you will practice the tools and techniques of strategic and operational HRM giving you practical, insight-driven experience which will help further your career.

The modules on this course are designed to provide you with expert knowledge of distinct HR subject areas together with exposure to contemporary debates, policies and practices, keeping you at the forefront of developments in your field.

You will develop an understanding of HRM within a range of organisational contexts, and you will be equipped with the analytical and diagnostic skills required of HR professionals.

In addition to the modules making up this course you will attend a two day off-site residential at the end of the taught programme focusing specifically on skills development activities. Attendance at the residential is a course requirement and the cost is included in the course fees.

Semester 1

HRM in Context – You will explore HRM in a business context to develop your understanding of the increasingly complex environments HR must work within both inside and external to organisations. This module allows learners to develop analysis skills to facilitate informed choices on which strategies may be most and least appropriate.

Investigating a Business Issue – You will diagnose and investigate a live business issue from a HR perspective, locate the issue within the body of contemporary knowledge, collect and analyse data, derive supportable conclusions and make practical and actionable recommendations for change and enhancement of current practice.

Resourcing and Talent Management – You will evaluate strategies for resourcing and managing talent within the organisation. There is a focus on activities concerned with resourcing the organisation; the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, and also on the strategic aspects of planning an organisation’s long and short term human resource requirements. This requires analysis of external labour markets and considerations of flexibility, as well as consideration of how internal labour markets may be made more productive and effective.

Performance Management – You will investigate the management of employee performance within the organisation, exploring the evidence that people are a major source of competitive advantage and the challenge of how best to develop and manage people to maximize their performance. You will assess the major systems for enhancing the performance of employees at all levels and advise organisations on the most appropriate methods for managing performance.

Semester 2

Leading Managing and Developing People – You will analyse key factors in leading, managing and developing people for organisational success. Every organisation is made up of individuals whose behaviour, individually or collectively will impact on its ability to succeed. Organisational performance can be enhanced and competitive advantage increased through the strategic management, leadership and development of people. This module enables you to gain an in-depth knowledge of HRM and HRD and to explore major themes from the growing literature and research in this subject area.

Learning and Talent Development – You will develop a critical understanding of the role and influence of a range of contextual factors associated with the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development in a variety of organisational contexts. You will also explore and evaluate the contribution of learning and talent development strategies and practices in meeting the aspirations, ambitions and objectives of the organization and the individual. This is a seven week module.

Employment Relations – You will develop and reflect upon your knowledge and understanding of Employment Relations from a number of different perspectives. The holistic significance of employment relations within an organisation is emphasised together with the importance of aligning HR policies with business strategy, change processes, employee voice and involvement practices. Good employee relations are important for an organisation’s success in the achievement of its business objectives and for gaining employee commitment to those objectives. Increasing legislation in this area has also brought pressure to develop appropriate managerial strategies to ensure employee commitment to organisational success. This is a seven week module.

Semester 3

Research Methods and Dissertation – In this semester you will work on completing a 16,000 word dissertation. You will undertake this as self-study and you will be allocated a supervisor who will guide and support you through this process. Meetings with your supervisor are not compulsory but are strongly recommended.

At the end of teaching you will undertake a two day residential course that will explore how to put all the skills from the course into developing good HR practices.

Methods of Learning

The learning and teaching style on this course is designed to enable you to take responsibility for your own learning and skills development within a caring environment facilitated by high quality academic support from tutors. You will be introduced to much of the core course content through activities that can be undertaken in your own time, off campus. These will usually be facilitated through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment – a web-based portal where you will be able to participate in learning activities, on-line discussions, reading and reflection. During on-campus sessions, the emphasis will be on participative and interactive activities designed to consolidate and develop your understanding through debate, discussion, role-play and participation in events such as guest speakers and a mock employment tribunal.

The course uses a carefully balanced combination of in-course assignments designed to enrich your learning which include business projects, reflective activities, group work presentation, examinations and a substantial research dissertation

This course usually has a diverse student group and this diversity provides a rich basis for sharing of different experiences and thinking on organisational and people issues. Peer networking and action learning sets will be facilitated and encouraged to maximise the learning to be gained from different student experiences.

Full-time students will take four modules in both Semester 1 and 2, part-time students will take two modules in both Semester 1 and 2.

Each module will require you to attend a three hour workshop per week.

For full-time students, taught sessions will normally be delivered over two days each week. For part-time students, it would normally be one day per week.

To maximise chances of success on this course, we recommend students spend approximately 12 hours a week per module in self-directed study time to prepare for the sessions and complete assignments.


Assessment will be undertaken by a range of methods including written assignments, business reports, projects, reflective activities, group work, presentations and examinations.

The 16,000 word Dissertation is a major component of this course and allows students to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and insight in their chosen topic area.

The final stage of the course is a 13,000-word research dissertation focusing on a live business issue which suits your strengths and interests. You can choose a project arranged for you by the University in a local organisation, or arrange one yourself in Britain or elsewhere. An individual tutor offers individual support for your research, and close supervision.

You can choose between two kinds of project:

• Organisation-based projects - these are projects which tackle a live HR problem or issue within a specific organisation. You will usually spend two months in the organisation, working with people and data relevant to your research. The topic is generally chosen by the organisation. Either the University will arrange this for you in a local organisation or you can arrange a project of your own, in Britain or overseas.

• Issue-based projects - these projects also tackle a live HR problem or issue, but do not require a placement; instead, the project concerns an issue of interest to you. This option typically offers greater freedom of choice. You could approach a number of organisations for data, or find ways of accessing people, for example through social media or your personal network.


We use a variety of blended teaching methods on this course. You will learn through a mix of tutor-led and student-led activities, including small group work, group presentations and discussion, student-led seminars, case studies and role plays.

The overall emphasis is on active participation. As well as face-to-face learning in groups, you will have access to our online learning platform, where you can find lectures, relevant articles and book extracts, as well as communicate with your tutors. We also draw on many real-life examples through case studies and guest practitioner speakers.

There is a significant requirement for students to work independently throughout the course, both individually and in groups. This increases as you move into the dissertation phase.


In order to help you to integrate your learning on the course with practice, and to prepare you for eventual employment, you will spend several days shadowing an HR professional during the first two semesters of the programme. This work experience is organised by the University on your behalf, and involves a diverse range of organisations within or close to Bristol.


A range of different forms of assessment are used throughout the course including written assignments, tests, exams, reflective log, presentations and group exercises. Assessment of skills and competence also forms part of the overall assessment strategy.
