The aim of UCLan’s Master of Science in Synthetic Organic Chemistry course is to provide an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying modern aspects of organic chemistry.

This course blends a theoretical knowledge of advanced concepts in organic synthesis and spectroscopic analysis with industrial applications but, unlike many Masters level courses of this type, does not focus students on one particular application of organic chemistry eg, medicinal chemistry. Instead it provides training, knowledge and a perspective of a broad range of chemical industries reliant upon organic chemistry.

Computing Facilities are available in the general computing suites found within the building and throughout campus. LIS provide access to a huge range of electronic resources – e-journals and databases, e-books, images and texts.
Course and module materials are not provided in ‘hard copy’ format, however, wherever practicable, lecture notes and/or presentations, seminar materials, assignment briefs and materials and other relevant information and resources are made available in electronic form via eLearn. This is the brand name for the online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that the University uses to support and enhance teaching and learning.

All students can access the eLearn spaces for the course and modules for which they are registered. Once logged into your eLearn area you can access material from the course and all of the modules you are studying without having to log in to each module separately.

The modules are assessed by both coursework and examination. To ensure that you do not have an excessive amount of assessment at any one time, the coursework assessment will take place uniformly throughout the course.

The theoretical aspects of the course are underpinned by an extensive series of laboratory classes. This cumulates in an 80 credit project where you have the opportunity to specialise an area of organic chemistry. This course will appeal to graduates from chemistry and related disciplines and will provide excellent preparation for anyone wishing to find employment in any organisation where a knowledge of organic synthesis or analysis is important.

Semester 1 of the course is designed to ensure that you have the basic skills needed to obtain an MSc. About this degree

The programme provides a thorough foundation in drug design, advanced organic synthesis and biological chemistry, together with modules on research techniques, professional development and entrepreneurship. The Department of Chemistry has about 350 students studying taught programmes, including around 50 on MSc courses, 10 postdoctoral research fellows, 50 research students (MPhil / PhD), and 25 academic staff, many of whom have strong links with industry.

In recent years, the Chemistry building has undergone extensive refurbishment and provides modern facilities and laboratories for the teaching and research needs of analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, as well as specialist laboratories for radiochemistry, environmental chemistry, microbiology and molecular pharmacology.

The Department has a number of specialist instruments and facilities, including: 2 x 400 MHz, 500 MHz and solid-state NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, a high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, sector field organic MS, GC-MS and linear ion trap LC-mass spectrometers, ion mobility spectrometers and gas and liquid chromatographs.

- Research
The Department typically has well over 50 research students and a dozen postdoctoral researchers. In addition there are usually around 50 MSc students in the department. Many students come to study from abroad, and there are research students and visitors from all over the world currently studying and carrying out research in the department.
The Department is very well equipped to carry out research spanning all the traditional branches of chemistry (analytical, environmental, inorganic, organic and physical) and which contributes to four active research themes (Energy, Environment, Security and Health).

90% of our graduates were in employment and/or further study six months after graduating. At Lincoln, you will be taught by experienced academics and practitioners with specialist expertise in analytical and organic chemistry, pharmacy, entomology, anthropology and molecular biology. How You Study

Students on this course should expect to typically receive 350 hours of contact time over the duration of the programme. The amount of contact time will vary depending on the various module option choices chosen.

Postgraduate study involves a significant proportion of independent study, exploring the material covered in lectures and seminars. As a general guide, for every hour in class students are expected to at least spend two - three hours in independent study.

The composition and delivery for the course breaks down differently for each module and may include lectures, seminars, workshops, independent study, laboratory practicals, research and one-to-one learning.

How You Are Assessed

The grading system for modules and award will follow the standard regulations for postgraduate taught degrees. The pass mark for modules is 50% or above and the distinction mark is 70% or above.

The module mark will be awarded based on different assessment methods: coursework, examinations, presentations, practical sessions or work contributions to the module. Details will be provided a module handbook given to students at the beginning of the academic year.

There is a growing need by industry for staff trained in computational molecular sciences. This new multidisciplinary MSc will teach simulation tools used in a wide range of applications, including catalysis and energy materials, nanotechnology and drug design, and will provide transferable skills to other fields, thereby broadening employment prospects.

About this degree

Students will gain detailed knowledge and skills in molecular modelling, focusing on the state-of-the art simulation techniques employed to research the molecular level properties that determine the macroscopic behaviour of matter. They will also gain key research skills and will learn the basic concepts in business and entrepreneurship as applied to high-tech industries.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

All students undertake a computational research project which culminates in a substantial dissertation of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and laboratory classes. Assessment is through unseen examination, coursework, individual and group projects, poster creation, presentation and the research project.

This group has laboratories with dedicated state-ofthe art drug delivery, nanotechnology, spectroscopy, chromatography and organic synthesis facilities. It brings together researchers in medicinal chemistry and drug design, nanotechnology and materials science, drug delivery and pharmaceutics encouraging a multidisciplinary approach to research. Research covers synthesis and biological evaluation of potential anti-cancer agents, structurebased drug design, QSAR predication of ADMET properties, controlled release, particle engineering, powder technology, pharmaceutical technology, and novel drug delivery systems, with a focus on respiratory drug delivery.

- Biological sciences

This group is housed in recently refurbished laboratories with dedicated state-of-the-art molecular biological, electrophysiological, tissue culture and microscopy facilities. The research is divided into four main themes; infectious diseases and allergy; neuroscience; renal and cardiovascular physiology; and pharmacology. Examples of current work include: investigation of the use of non-pathogenic virus ‘pseudotypes’ to study pathogenic RNA, study of the properties of neuronal potassium channels and their modulation and the development of new therapies for patients that have developed acute kidney injury in collaboration with a major pharmaceutical company.

- Pharmacy practice

This group conducts research in two areas: public health and medicines optimisation, with a particular focus on cardiovascular diseases and mental health. Work in public health includes studies in physical exercise, alcohol, cardiovascular screening and spirometry testing, plus pharmacovigilance. Studies in medicines optimisation include work in dementia, bipolar disorder and stroke, with an emphasis on the patient perspective.

Careers

Graduates who obtain their PhD from Kent or Greenwich are highly sought after by prospective employers, both within the UK and overseas. Destinations for doctoral graduates include university academic departments, research institutes and leading pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.

The MRes in Analytical Chemistry is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of students. In particular, it is geared towards the analytical professionals seeking to refresh their knowledge of analytical chemistry and recent graduates in a wide range of sciences allied to chemistry including, biology, chemistry, environmental science, forensic science and physics.

This course enables you to develop and further your knowledge of chemical analysis, with a carefully put together range of core modules. You can expand your interests further by selecting module options and an analytical chemistry led research project within one of the diverse range of internationally recognised analytical chemistry research groups (alongside PhD students and post doctoral research fellows).

We have links with scientists from AstraZeneca and Vectura who deliver some of the module content relevant to their workplace. Other guest lecturers from a variety of other companies and universities also present their research.
