Employability
On completion of their studies, some graduates undertake senior house officer posts in UK teaching hospitals and take the opportunity to progress through specialist training posts to become NHS Hospital Consultants. Overseas graduates may return to their home country to continue their specialist training. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. The three year course provides specialist oral surgery clinical training. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of the following units:
-Surgical Basic Sciences (Basic surgical science, preoperative and postoperative care) and Patient Care (Assessing patients, medical aspects of patient care and control of pain and anxiety)
-Reflective Oral Surgery Practices
-Dental Tissues (Infections and inflammation of the teeth and jaws, removal of teeth and surgical implantology)
-Bone: Disease and Injury (Diseases of bone and the maxillary sinus, oral and maxillofacial injuries)
-Soft Tissues (Cysts, mucosal disease, premalignancy and malignancy)
-Salivary Tissue, Pain and TMJ (Salivary gland disease, facial pain and disorders of the temporomandibular joint)

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and some invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills. If you study the full three year MSc you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

This course is designed for dentists who wish to advance their knowledge of this clinical specialty at a postgraduate level.

There are four separate units: Research Methods (15 credits); Biostatistics (15 credits); Specialist Clinical Component (90 credits); and, for MSc students, a dissertation (60 credits).

In the cases of the Research Methods and Biostatistics units, the aim is to enable you to become competent in the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects.

The aim of the Specialist Clinical Component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. The evidence base supporting clinical surgical practice is emphasised.

The Specialist Clinical Component permits observation of a wide range of surgery including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participation in dentoalveolar surgery.

The aim of the dissertation (for MSc students only) is to offer research training in identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project. The research project is in line with the research themes of control of pain and anxiety or surgical implantology or oral cancer and health services research.

The course aims to provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake minor oral surgery in the context of a wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.

The core text book for the course is provided. This book, Master Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiology, Pathology and Oral Medicine (ISBN 0443061920), has been produced by Division of Dentistry staff: Coulthard, Horner, Sloan and Theaker.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBA's throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge, understanding and advanced skills in the treatment of patients who require prosthetic facial rehabilitation. For Maxillofacial Prosthetists, Technologists and Prosthodontists working in a hospital environment or similar practice, to enhance their knowledge of intra and extra oral prosthetic facial rehabilitation and improve their clinical and technical skills. The programme provides opportunities to experience cutting edge digital technology resulting in a higher standard of clinical practice.

- Course purpose -

This programme is suitable for Maxillofacial Prosthetists, Technologists and Prosthodontists who wish to develop their technical skills and would like to develop higher standards of clinical practice.

- Course format and assessment -

This master's programme is assessed through a combination of assignments, written examinations, clinical case presentations and a dissertation. In the first two years, most modules within the programme are assessed by a combination of 60 per cent written examination and 40 per cent written assignments.

Each year you will receive an assignment schedule to follow for the year and must complete two assignments from each module between January and August to be entered into the end of year exams. Exams can be taken in London or, for overseas students, at centres in the student's country of residence.

The Clinical Practice module is undertaken over the three years of the programme and is assessed 100 per cent on a clinical portfolio of four cases. The Report module is undertaken in the final year. Students will work towards a 10,000 word dissertation/project with an allocated supervisor which will be assessed 100 per cent on the basis of the report.

This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

This is a one-year, full-time degree programme aimed at qualified dental clinicians looking to develop competency in clinical oral medicine, clinical and diagnostic oral pathology, and laboratory medicine. This programme takes a holistic approach and presents a unique opportunity for integrated clinical and laboratory teaching within these linked dental specialities.

The programme focuses on the recognition, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with common oral and maxillofacial diseases and will provide a sound grounding in the fundamental principles of UK specialist practice. It also considers and incorporates the basic principles of research that are relevant to clinical and modern translational practice.

Contemporary educational methods will be used to determine and monitor knowledge base, as well as using workplace-based assessments for clinical competency. Students will be supervised by clinical, laboratory and academic staff within an established and integrated specialist clinical training and educational environment. There will be continuous verbal feedback and support to help develop skills for individual reflection and self-assessment. Students will undertake one of the following: a relevant laboratory-based research, clinical service review or literature or data analysis project leading to the submission of a dissertation.

The programme offers practical experience in advanced conservation, fixed (conventionally prepared and resin-retained designs) and removable prosthodontics, and implant-supported prostheses for single missing teeth or partially edentulous cases, alongside an introduction to occlusal registration techniques and the range of diagnostic procedures required to ensure effective planning and design of oral reconstructions.

Students undertake modules to the value of 360 credits. All modules are compulsory.

In year one, students complete core modules to the value of (165 credits). In year two, students complete core modules to the value of (105 credits) and a dissertation (90 credits). In year three students complete clinical study (not credit bearing).

This innovative Masters degree is suitable for qualified practitioners who have been appointed to surgical care practice training posts within surgical directorates. Your role should encompass the provision of care and appropriate intervention within the perioperative environment, on wards and/or in clinics (usually within a specified surgical specialty).

The programme will provide you with a systematic and critical understanding of the breadth and depth of knowledge within specific areas of practice. You will develop core and specialist surgical skills and extend your knowledge and practice within the surgical care environment. This will include some operative procedures that will enable specialist practitioners to provide continuity of service and standards of care to patients in areas which do not necessarily need to be provided by medically qualified staff.

What will I study?

Initially, you will be given a broad overview of surgical practice, covering areas such as clinical examination and diagnostic tests. You will also study and practice first assistant skills, basic surgical skills, and generic surgical care practice skills (including all of the pre, intra and post-operative patient phases). Research and leadership skills in relation to the role of a surgical care practitioner are also introduced and discussed.

In the second half of the programme, you will undertake a specialist negotiated module which will be tailored to your specific specialist practice requirements. For instance, if you work for an orthopaedic team then the module will be tailored to the specific requirements of that team, potentially considering themes such as understanding the pathophysiology of joint disease and strategies for their treatment, the use of implants in elective orthopaedic surgery and in relation to specific orthopaedic procedures, and knowledge of available options and surgical techniques.

A dissertation module focuses on a clinical project that will demonstrate leadership and innovation in a specific clinical issue.

How will I study?

The programme incorporates a blend of face-to-face study, independent learning and time spent working in practice. Delivery is at St James' in Manchester, although some face-to-face sessions and/or examinations may be undertaken at Edge Hill University.

For the time spent in university, the first half of the course will be delivered through block-weeks of face-to-face sessions. Eight block-weeks of face-to-face sessions will take place in the first year. Some reading time will be incorporated into these eight weeks to help you plan for the assessment and submission of work.

In the second half of the programme, there is a greater focus on independent learning. However, some face-to-face sessions will be planned and there will also be an attendance requirement for assessments.

Throughout the programme, you will undertake training in your place of employment, working alongside the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe and effective care to patients in the perioperative environment, on the wards and in the clinics both pre and post-operatively.

A minimum of 33.5 hours per week, for approximately 37 weeks, will be spent working in practice.The national curriculum requires a minimum of 2,200 hours over the two years in combined clinical activities in and out of the theatre environment. A minimum of 1,100 hours has to be spent in the operating theatre environment.

In addition to the above, a half-day per week will be built into your annual timetable to facilitate self-directed learning and engagement with Edge Hill University’s virtual learning environment.

How will I be assessed?

In university, assessments will take the form of essays, written case studies, viva voce (oral) examinations, written examinations and observed structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

In practice, you will be assessed using a variety of techniques, including:

- The Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), where you will perform a specific practical procedure that is directly observed;

- Case-based Discussion (CbD), requiring the evaluation of your performance in the management of a patient. This will provide an indication of your competence in areas such as clinical reasoning, decision-making and the application of medical knowledge in relation to patient care;

- Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX), where a clinical encounter with a patient is evaluated to provide an indication of your competence in skills essential for outstanding clinical care.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by tutors from the Faculty of Health and Social Care who have the experience and expertise to deliver the applied elements of this MSc via lessons, seminars and discussions. In addition, teaching will be provided by associate lecturers who are either medically qualified, or employed as qualified surgical care practitioners.

You will require a mentor who must be a consultant surgeon for the practice elements of the programme, although it is expected that you will work with a variety of staff within the surgical team. This may include, for example, other consultant surgeons, registrars and junior medical staff, in addition to other surgical care practitioners (subject to availability). The mentor(s) must be willing and available to work alongside you in the clinical arena, with real patients, supervising and assessing your clinical activities.

What are my career prospects?

On completion of this programme, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification that enables you to undertake the role of a surgical care practitioner.

You will also be able to demonstrate a number of core and specialist skills that will enable you to work effectively as part of the surgical team, work competently to practice within your field of speciality (e.g. cardiothoracic, colorectal, or trauma and orthopaedics) and to be able to function confidently, competently and autonomously.
