You are recommended to commence your studies with the Enhancing Health and Wellbeing module. This module will introduce you to the core theoretical concepts related to the promotion and enhancement of health and wellbeing, and you will be supported to reflect upon your career to date, considering how you would like to progress in preparation for your learning journey ahead. This initial support will prepare you to take control of your learning throughout the rest of the programme.

The modules you undertake next can be chosen from a range offered within the CCCU postgraduate portfolio, your choice of modules will reflect your learning and development needs and where relevant those of your supporting organisation. If you opt for the generic programme award title, e.g. MSc Health and Wellbeing, the choice of modules is up to you; if you opt for a MSc with negotiated endorsement e.g. MSc Health and Wellbeing (plus negotiated endorsement) then you will need to identify modules that can demonstrate your learning in relationship to this endorsement in conjunction with your academic tutor and these will need to be agreed by the Exam Board.

Where a specific option for a topic you want to study is not offered within the portfolio of postgraduate modules, you can opt to study it a bespoke manner, by undertaking the Negotiated Learning module. This module provides the opportunity to study at and for work with the support of an academic supervisor.

You will complete your MSc programme of studies with the research modules. You will undertake two modules – the Research Approaches and Methods module (RAM) which develops knowledge and understanding of research methods, followed by a Dissertation or Project. The aim of the research modules within your programme are to enable you to develop sound knowledge and understanding of different research approaches and methods which will enable you to plan and undertake a substantive dissertation or project in a topic relevant to your profession. At the end of these modules you will be able to produce clear aims and objectives for your study and be able to select and evaluate key research and other evidence. You will be able to select and justify a study design or methodology and be able to analyse and interpret relevant data. You will be able to reflect on the processes undertaken in carrying out a dissertation or project and discuss findings in relation to theoretical perspectives and your professional practice.

Format

Learning and teaching strategies will involve you as an active participant; you will be encouraged to use self-evaluation and reflection on your own experience in order to deepen and consolidate your understanding as well as plan for your future learning. Modules are organised using a range of teaching and learning methods to facilitate your academic and professional development. These methods include a blend of classroom based, online and work based learning activities. Teaching and learning methods are supported by technologies e.g. our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE

Assessment

Throughout the programme your knowledge and skills will be informally assessed through a variety of learning activities. You will be encouraged to engage in self-assessment and may be actively involved in peer assessment. Formative assessment (during the module but not part of the final assessment) opportunities will be offered within each module as a part of your on-going learning.

Modules are worth 20 HE Level 7 credits, except the research dissertation which is either worth 40 or 60 HE Level 7 credits depending upon which option you choose to study. For each 20 credit module, the assessments are weighted at 4000 words or equivalent. Assessments include written essays/reports, critical reflections, case studies, and oral presentations.

The final stage research modules are assessed through the production of a research plan or proposal followed by a substantive dissertation/project in which the proposed research is carried out. All assessments focus on your ability to progress and integrate theory and practice enabling you to demonstrate the fulfilment of the module learning outcomes and are based on the postgraduate criteria for assessment.

The course is an excellent preparation for practice giving you a realistic experience of life as a trainee solicitor.

Who is it for?

This course is well suited for anyone who wants to become a solicitor whatever area of law they are interested in. There is a rich blend of students on the course with a variety of backgrounds and interests.

There are students from a number of jurisdictions many of whom will have experience of working in practice. Most students will have a upper second class honours degree or have performed well on the Graduate Diploma in Law. A high standard of work is therefore expected and achieved.

Objectives

This postgraduate Legal Practice Course is a practical course which will give you a strong foundation for a future career in the law. This is reflected in the skills based, transactional nature of the course.

You will work on a series of client files which will be similar to the cases dealt with in a solicitor’s office. The law school’s experienced staff will guide you through the different tasks that would have to be undertaken to advance the client’s case. Your approach to the course will therefore be very different to the one experienced in an academic law course. You will have to apply knowledge in a way that best serves the client’s interests.

The course is very interactive. You will learn by performing tasks relating to the case studies that you are given. These include drafting legal documents, preparing letters of advice or delivering a submission at court. At the end of the course you will therefore be well prepared for your career in the law.

Academic facilities

The course is delivered at the Gray’s Inn Place campus in the heart of legal London. The campus has a specific professional programmes library and all the classrooms have been designed to meet the requirements of the professional law courses.

There is a dedicated LPC suite of classrooms which also includes lockers and a resources room specifically for LPC students. The building which houses the LPC suite also has 10 video rooms where students can practice performances in the oral skills.

Placements

There are no placements as part of the course. However, students will be able to take advantage of the many pro bono opportunities that the law school offers. These include advice clinics, court based projects and schemes which offer the opportunity to work abroad. The City Law School also has links with a wide variety of organisations who can offer opportunities to volunteer with them.

The law school is often approached by firms offering internships to students.

Teaching and learning

One of the strong features of the LPC at City is the level of support students receive. All of the tutors on the course are solicitors, some of whom have worked as partners in their previous firms. They are supported by occasional sessions delivered by practitioners or visiting academics who are experts in their particular fields.

The course is structured in a way that allows you to gain maximum benefit from the experience that tutors have. Students therefore get a high level of face to face contact time with tutors.

This is reinforced by the size of the groups. For the workshops students will be in a group which has a maximum of 16 students. This group will then split into two for the skills sessions which have a maximum of eight students. This allows more time for students to get guidance from tutors.

These smaller sessions are underpinned by the large groups. All students will attend these sessions which give an overview of the area being studied.

Assessment

The assessment regime for the course has to meet the SRA’s requirements. This means that the Core Practice Areas, Electives and Professional Conduct and Regulation (including Solicitors Accounts) are assessed by means of a written examination.

The Course Skills are assessed in the context of the Core Practice Areas and Wills in a manner that is appropriate to the individual skill. For example, you will have to conduct a filmed interview with an actor as your client, make a filmed court submission, draft a legal document or prepare a letter of advice for a client.

Our assessments are open book and therefore test your application of the law rather than your memory.

Modules

The course begins with a two week Foundation when you will have classes every day. This will introduce you the Course Skills and the more practical approach that we take to studying the law. The course is then divided into two stages.

In stage one you will study the core modules. During this stage you will attend four days a week. You will normally have three one and half hour sessions a day amounting to 16 – 18 hours a week.

In stage two, you will study three elective modules. Your timetable will depend on the electives that you choose. You will have around 13.5 – 15 hours of classes a week during this stage.

Stage one - in Stage one you have to complete nine compulsory modules as follows:
-Core Practice Areas
-Course Skills
-Professional Conduct and Regulation
-Wills and the Administration of Estates

Stage two - during Stage two of the course you will study your electives. In order to complete the LPC you must pass three electives. You can take your electives at more than one provider and you can take your electives at providers other than City. You should, however, be aware that it might be more expensive for you to do this. You will choose your electives in November/December after having received guidance from the tutors about your choice. You will have to opt for either a commercial or general practice route although the bulk of the electives are open to all students. All students can choose from the following electives:
-Advanced civil litigation (10 credits)
-Commercial dispute resolution
-Commercial law (10 credits)
-Employment law (10 credits)
-Media law (10 credits)

If you take the commercial route you can also opt for Equity Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions. You will not be able to choose options on the general practice route. On the general practice route you can opt for Family or Private Client but will not be able to take options from the commercial route.

Career prospects

This course is designed to prepare you for life as a trainee solicitor.

Many applicants will not have a training contract when they start the course. The law school offers the bespoke Training Contract Advisory Service (TCAS). This is run by members of the team who were partners in their firms and so know what employers are looking for.

TCAS offers assistance with CV’s, covering letters, selection days and other matters relating to a search for a traineeship. In particular, students can arrange a mock interview with a member of the team. The support offered has allowed graduates to go into a wide variety of firms. These include commercial and high street firms both within and outside London.

We do retain links with our alumni some of whom assist us with the course in a variety of ways. In particular, we have a mentor scheme which involves previous students and members of the profession more generally. The mentors are able to give you guidance on your career.

Some graduates will also go on to further study or use the skills and knowledge acquired in areas outside of the law.

The course is designed for those intending to practice law in the field of international commercial law.

The course covers key principles of international business law and the international sale of goods. Alongside this, it explores the reputational and litigation risks associated with corporate social responsibility and human rights. Optional modules include 'Mediation and negotiation' and 'International commercial arbitration'.

Students interested in Chinese business law can opt to take part in a study visit to China organised in co-operation with the Confucius Institute and may choose an aspect of this topic for their dissertation. You'll also be encouraged and supported to obtain placements with London law firms and partner legal organisations.

- Research methods
You'll study research methods and prepare a research proposal for your dissertation. You may opt to study Mandarin Level 1 and take part in a study visit to China for an introduction to the Chinese Legal System and Business Law as a preparation for your dissertation.

- Principles of international business law
This module examines the nature, history and sources of international commercial law; the role of conflict of laws in international business law and international commercial dispute resolution; the relevance of comparative law to international business law and the various instruments (international conventions, model laws etc.) and institutions (including UNIDROIT, UNCITRAL, ICC, the Hague Conference on Private International Law) responsible for the harmonization of international business law.

- The international sale of goods
This module examines the usual legal structures of international sales transactions. It covers the rules governing the sales contract, and related issues such as letters of credit, bills of lading and Incoterms. The module examines transnational sources of law, particularly the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (Vienna 1980), and exemplary domestic laws from both common law and civil law jurisdictions, including the United States' Uniform Commercial Code, English law, French law and German law.

- International business, human rights and CSR
The module examines issues in the field of business and human rights and the international context of corporate social responsibility, which are of central importance in an era of increasing globalization. The module will assess the intersection of transnational business operations and efforts to promote international human rights. The module begins with a review of the international debate on corporate responsibility to respect human rights, and traces the emergence, within the UN, of the "Protect, Respect and Remedy" Framework. Cases and mechanisms are examined through which corporations might be held accountable for their impact on human rights. The module also examines the ways in which both domestic and international legal systems seek to regulate the problem of corruption and bribery, looking at the Bribery Act 2010 and the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

- Dissertation
The Dissertation module requires completion of a 15000 words Master's level dissertation in an area consistent with, and appropriate to (and, if relevant, the specialist pathway within) the degree being sought. You'll be required to virtually independently conceive, plan and execute an appropriate piece of research based on firm academic foundations. In doing so, the dissertation is required to address an issue or matter of some importance within the areas and/or disciplines encompassed across the Master's degree being sought.

- International and comparative company law
The purpose of this module will be to compare the main principles governing the law of corporations within major legal systems. Examples will be drawn from both within the common-law, comparing the separate development in common-law jurisdictions of themes derived from a common source, and the civil law, comparing the differences between civil and common-law views on the characteristics and functions of corporate bodies. The cross-border framework for corporations, including existing EU law and proposals, will also be examined as will the rise of the multinational company

- International commercial arbitration
International commercial arbitration is a process of resolving business disputes between or among transnational parties through the use of arbitrators rather than courts. The course will examine the conceptual and practical issues relating to matters such as the decision to arbitrate, the arbitration agreement, the relevant law, the structure and process of international arbitration and the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.

- Mediation and negotiation
The theory and practice of mediation and negotiation, including practical role based exercises to develop professional skills and experience.

All modules are assessed by coursework, except for 'International business, human rights and CSR' which is assessed by an oral presentation.

Employability

This course is focused on the professional practice of international commercial law and seeks to develop professional skills and experience as well as academic knowledge. Key skills include dispute resolution and you'll be encouraged and supported to seek relevant legal placements alongside your studies.

The course requires an undergraduate degree in law, so your existing knowledge of basic principles, concepts and theories, combined with this specialism will give your career in the area a head start.

An LLM is also beneficial if you want to go into teaching law.

Format

Participants work with a supervisor to design and undertake a small scale project aimed at researching or developing practice. Some opt to work with others in a small research community or development group and others opt to work more independently with a supervisor. Central to the programme is a belief in the importance of empowering teachers to link effectively theory, research and practice.

As part of the Faculty's commitment to ensuring that the PPD courses meet the demand that good practice should be 'evidence based' they include an introduction to research methods, designed to support PPD enquiry into classroom and school based topics.

The course is online, so no attendance is required, and you will have a supervisor to work with you on this aspect of your research. The course will be tailored to meet your research needs and the materials, which include video interviews with internationally renowned Cambridge researchers, are both accessible and comprehensive.

Placements

In 2012 City University London founded a legal advice clinic focusing on advising start-ups in London’s Silicon Roundabout. The clinic, called Start-Ed, is the first of its kind in the country and has won many awards and grants. Under supervision from a solicitor, you can gain experience assisting real clients that include tech start-ups and meet the people behind London’s most exciting new business ideas.

Academic facilities

The LLM course is primarily taught at Gray’s Inn Place campus with some modules elsewhere. Here you will find the Atkin Building which houses a Law student common room and a large lecture theatre. There is also a Law common room at Northampton Square.

As a City Law School student you will benefit from everything the Institution has to offer including the Learning Success department and Lawbore, an online resource designed to help you find the information you need for the course modules. All course modules have online depositories through Moodle.

The City Law School has its own dedicated administration team and you also have access to two legal libraries, one at the Gray’s Inn campus and the other based on site at our Northampton Square campus.

Teaching and learning

Assessment will draw on a range of approaches which include written coursework, presentations, skills work, in-class tests, projects and a dissertation. The majority of modules will be assessed on the basis of written coursework of 5,000-5,500 words.

The 30-credit dissertation module will involve the submission of a dissertation of 10,000 words on a subject agreed with your supervisor/Programme Director. If you decide to opt for the 60-credit dissertation instead, you will need to submit a dissertation of 20,000 words on a subject agreed with your supervisor/Programme Director.

Most modules have a single combined assessment with 100% weighting but there are some where there is more than one assessment and the weighting for each will be 50%.

You have the option of completing formative coursework in each module. The formative assessment will give you an opportunity to understand and appreciate the academic levels expected. At different stages of the programme, you will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate legal research, quantitative, cognitive and other skills in addition to your knowledge and understanding of the subjects.

The dissertation gives you an opportunity to display competence in legal research and to explore your specific interests more deeply. There is a degree of autonomous learning at this stage in the programme. You will be demonstrating how you can manage information as well as developing complex arguments and in some cases innovative solutions to specific legal problems.

Each assessment tests whether you:
-Have grasped the relevant principles.
-Are able to analyse and interpret those principles critically.
-Are able to apply them to complex factual problems.
-Can present the relevant points in concise, clear and grammatical terms.

The MA Historical Research is for students who want to develop their understanding of history and of the nature of historical research. It is a flexible course that will encourage you to develop as an independent researcher. You will be able to pursue your interests in history while discovering the ways in which historians work. You will also engage with the intellectual, practical and social facets of the profession.

Core modules emphasise the nature of the discipline or historical research, its evolution (History in the Past or Historians on History) and the preparatory work for independent research (The Profession of the Historian or the Dissertation Feasibility Study). These modules will give you the grounding needed to engage with your own research project in the dissertation module.

Design your MA studies according to your preferred methods of learning. If you prefer to work independently you may choose to opt for the Extended History Dissertation, whereas if you prefer more taught elements you can opt for the History Dissertation. This will allow you to place more or less emphasis on independent work and research. The Extended History Dissertation is a great opportunity for those wanting to move on to further research or who want to develop a career in which research is a key element. The course has been designed with employability in mind, with a focus on the way research skills can be transferred to the work place.

History by nature is a subject that includes a number of transferable skills such as critical thinking, collecting and analysing data critically, working independently and to a deadline, developing a coherent argument, writing, and oral skills. The QAA Subject Benchmark statement for History (December 2014) lists the some following (§3.3):

The course aims to harness the knowledge and experience of school colleagues in the delivery of courses, working in partnership with the experience of accredited ITT providers such as universities. schools, and the mentors within them, provide the vast majority of the training.

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Pathway, all successful student teachers will achieve the recommendation for QTS.

The course is for people who want to train to become teachers, spending the majority of their training time in school alongside qualified teachers.

Content

QTS Pathway – all students

The majority of your time on this course is spent in school. It is a requirement of all QTS courses that you get at least 60 days (or equivalent) training through the year. You will get at least 15 days taught sessions from the University and a course of professional development provided by the school. Your development in school will be supported by a mentor who will help you in your progress towards meeting the standards for QTS. You will be required to undertake a period of placement in a second school that provides a contrast to your base school.

School Direct PGCE Pathway – an option for all students

The School Direct PGCE pathway is a mixture of work based learning and academic assessments. All students on this pathway will study the aspects described above in the QTS pathway. In addition, Student Teachers who opt in to this pathway will be required to undertake academic study and write academic assignments. There are additional taught sessions and tutorial support to support students studying on this pathway.

Format

The majority of the learning on this course happens in schools. Student teachers will learn in a variety of ways in school, including from experienced mentors, through observing others and through experience.

There are 15 days taught in university at the Canterbury Campus. The teaching on these days will be a mixture of lecture and seminar and workshop activity.

There is a high level of individual support for learning offered in this course through the mentors in school and the university tutors.

Assessment

• QTS Pathway – all students
Throughout the course you will be assessed by your mentors and tutors who will grade you at key points to help you understand how well you are meeting the standards for QTS. At the end of the course you will have a final assessment. This will take the form of a review meeting to formally assess whether you have met the standards for QTS.

• School Direct PGCE Pathway
In addition to the above assessment process for the recommendation for QTS students who have opted for the School Direct PGCE Pathway will be required to submit three 4,000 word assignments, spread across the year, which will be assessed at Masters Level.

The aim of the PGCE Primary and PGCE Early Years course is to enable you to become a reflective, critical and enquiring primary teacher, able to respond flexibly to changing circumstances and to continue to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills throughout your professional life.

Whilst the PGCE is an academic qualification, the emphasis is very much on practical experience with approximately two thirds of the course spent in school.

We are able to offer applicants a choice of routes:

• Full-time 5-11 Age Phase - 1 Year Course

KEY FACTS
This course has very high employability rates and many of our trainees gain employment in local primary schools. Trainees are supported with the application process as part of their course.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England who are not employed as a teacher. Bursary amounts will vary depending on degree class.

We work hard to ensure that we have strong relationships with more than 900 primary schools in the region. All schools sign a partnership agreement in which they pledge a commitment to the quality of experience they offer our trainees.

In the latest Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Survey (2011-13 aggregated data) 94 per cent of Birmingham City University trained primary teachers rated the quality of their training as 'good' or 'very good'.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have (or expect to achieve before enrolment) a Bachelor's Honours degree, at upper Second Class level or above from a UK higher education institution or a recognised equivalent in a subject that provides the necessary foundation for work as a primary teacher. Trainees expecting to take a specialist module in a core subject, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) or Early Years must have an appropriate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent understanding and experience.

GCSE at grade C or above (or its equivalent) in English, mathematics and a science subject is also necessary at the point of application. For entry onto a teaching course from September 2013 you will also be required to pass the Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy.

It is essential for applicants to have spent time in British state primary schools and have some familiarity with the current National Curriculum before submitting an application.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

COURSE STRUCTURE
Attendance on the full-time course is Monday to Friday, while faculty sessions for part-time students take place on no more than two days per week. However, the part-time route block teaching practice modules are full-time. The full-time course runs over three terms from September, ending in July the following year. The part-time course runs over six terms from September in the first year to July in the second year.

The delivery of the modules is often workshop-based, covering professional subject and age-range methodology, as well as general pedagogical skills and all other major educational issues.

ASSESSMENT
There are assessments on course work, teaching practice and the achievement of The Department for Education for the award of QTS. You will also undertake written assessments and some presentations derived from both faculty-based modules and school experiences.

FURTHER STUDY
Our MA Education and Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) programmes are designed to serve the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of teachers. On successful completion of the PGCE course you will be entitled to enter these programmes. Master's level credits from the PGCE course will count towards the Master's qualifications.

EMPLOYABILITY
Our graduates are highly successful in finding teaching posts and many take jobs in the West Midlands.

The real estate market encompasses a diverse range of residential, commercial and industrial land and property. Real estate professionals advise on a broad range of areas needed by occupiers, developers and investors. This programme provides the foundation knowledge and skills needed by future property professionals.

The programme is designed to provide students with the essential learning components of economics, valuation, construction, investment, law, planning, management and development. It will build understanding of the complex interactions and dynamics of the property market, including a sound knowledge of valuation and appraisal techniques.

Professional Recognition

The MSc programme has professional accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Heriot-Watt University is a leading centre for the education of commercial and residential property professionals in the UK.

Programme Structure

For the MSc, students undertake eight taught courses plus the research dissertation. Students on the Diploma programme take eight taught courses. Students can opt to complete a total of four courses and graduate with the Heriot-Watt University Postgraduate Certificate. Mode of Study

The programme is offered on a full time study basis (12 months) or part time on a day-release basis (24 months). The programme is also offered via attendance-free distance learning.

Many of our distance learning students are in highly demanding employment. These students can opt to reduce the level of study per year and increase the study period to a maximum of six years, thus gaining a respected postgraduate degree whilst contributing to the CPD requirements of their professional bodies. Arrangements can be made for distance learning student to sit exams at a number of centres throughout the world. Students receive comprehensive course study packs by post. A PC with e-mail and Internet access is necessary for those students to gain the fullest learning experience from the programme.

Graduate Opportunities

The MSc in Real Estate Management and Development programme is focussed on industrial and professional relevance, ensuring that graduates of the programme are quickly able to make a positive and effective contribution to the success of their working environment, and the development of their own professional careers.
