This unique MSc program is the result of collaboration between the School of Engineering and the School of Business and Management. It is specially designed for professionals with technical background who wish to launch or further their career in management. This program will provide the know-how and techniques from line management to middle management, and all the way to global enterprise management.

The MSc program in Engineering Enterprise Management is a comprehensive management training program designed for practicing engineers and scientists of all disciplines who wish to start a career in management. It involves the integration of multi-disciplinary activities with the built environment and the management of their impact upon the people and the workplace.

The MSc/Diploma in Facilities Management develops competencies and skills to enable its graduates to manage facilities effectively for a changing business world. Facilities Management provides proactive support and dynamism to the core business of an organisation through a coordinated and well managed approach to secondary business functions. Graduates from the programme will gain the skills necessary to fully realise the potential of facilities management in providing effective and productive environments which meet the needs of today’s businesses.

Course Choice

•Service Procurement and Provision – mandatory
This course looks at the key services that make up a modern facilities management operation ranging from interior design, landscaping and courtesy services to the more traditional property related services concerned with the upkeep of facilities. The course provides a theoretical basis for service procurement; the selection of service providers; and risk management models. It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

•Contracts & Procurement - mandatory
This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the facilities manager with contemporary issues in facilities management and the relevant guidelines, assessment procedures, and standards for sustainable and strategic facilities issues. Key issues covered include: sustainability, energy management, waste management, the working environment, and comfort and productivity in the workplace.

For BIFM accreditation, students should undertake the following three elective courses:

The Advanced Engineering Management Programme (AEMP) is delivered jointly by Birmingham Business School (BBS) and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), combining the expertise and strengths of both schools to offer a high quality, distinctive and flexible course.

The programme introduces students to core management concepts in semester one before selecting one of four specialist pathways in semester two. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

The Construction Management pathway provides advanced training to graduates to develop their construction management skills enabling them to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both the civil engineering and building industries. The skills gained will provide them with ability to respond to changing requirements of the construction industry in both the UK and overseas. The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and individual projects.

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry.

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high-quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

The significance of disasters is increasing due to variables such as population growth, climate change, urbanisation and global connectivity. The impact of natural disasters such as the Tsunami on the Far East and Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans is still being felt in those regions. Human initiated disasters such as the Twin Towers collapse and the Madrid and London bombings have had an enormous impact on security systems and world travel. Biologically based disasters such as SARS and bird flu similarly have had worldwide impact.

The MSc in Humanitarian Logistics and Emergency Management is a unique programme and is the first in the world to combine the academic disciplines of humanitarian logistics and emergency management. The programme builds on the established strengths and reputation of Ireland and in particular Irish Aid, in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The organizations providing the first phase of disaster response need the capacity and capabilities to deliver goods and services quickly to those impacted by an event. This is often under difficult circumstances in foreign locations and across cultures. Designed in consultation with business leaders and managers, the MSc Management degree is aimed at new and recent graduates whose first degree is not in a business discipline and who typically have little or no practical work experience. Previous graduates have been drawn from areas as diverse as psychology, geography, law, politics, computer science and engineering.

Our students develop knowledge across the core business and management disciplines. You will gain appreciation of how business operates in today’s global marketplace and awareness of the linkages between the different functional areas of management (e.g. strategy, marketing, human resource management, and operations management). Programme Structure

The aim of the module is to provide students with an understanding of the use of accounting information by managers and investors and the fundamental concepts and principles of the investment and finance decisions of firms.

Statistics & Research Methods is intended to develop students’ skills and abilities to investigate, understand and interpret performance and issues in business and management. The module has two specific objectives. First, it aims to introduce students to the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of business and management research, as well as to a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques used therein. Second, it aims to provide students with an introduction to statistics and quantitative data analysis, including the use of SPSS.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programme aims to provide a high quality, vocational education which is intellectually rigorous and up-to- date, as well as relevant to the needs of existing and future managers, executives and other professionals in the hospitality industry.

In addition to subject-specific knowledge, the programmes aim to develop generic management skills necessary to be effective in todays’ challenging business environment.

The programme has a business management orientation related to the hospitality sector and draws upon a range of cognate areas of study to explain and analyse the particular sector. It takes an integrated approach so as to provide a coherent exploration of the inter-relationships between the various components.

In addition, by way of elective modules, students on the programme can specialise in particular aspects relevant to their backgrounds, interests and aspirations.

The programme is international in scope and coverage, and lecturers draw upon the most recent research to inform their teaching. The programme aims to develop students as independent and reflective learners, able to continue their learning once in their chosen professions in the hospitality industry.
