The aim of the Advanced Critical Care Practitioner programme is to develop a new professional able to safely fulfill a proportion of those roles currently only undertaken by medically qualified intensive care trainees in the National Health Service

This new role is seen to be important in pioneering the shift of work, traditionally done only by doctors, to new, non-medically trained grades of staff. It also addresses the current workforce planning problems in critical care.

This programme allows students to extend their studies beyond the qualification required for registration (PG Diploma: Advanced Critical Care Practitioner) to an MSc, by satisfactorily completing a dissertation.

The programme is 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Teaching and learning

In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with students on all these other health care courses. The PGCert Advanced Critical Care is designed to enhance the skills of practitioners such as registered nurses and operating department practitioners. It will enable you to become a clinical expert who is able to work safely and effectively in critical care practice, meeting the Step Two and Step Three competencies of the National Competency Framework for adult critical care nurses. A systems-based approach is used throughout the course to reflect the national standards for adult critical care education. You will acquire effective leadership skills and gain the skills and confidence needed to develop others in the delivery of high quality and compassionate care to patients with complex critical care needs.

What will I study?

The programme comprises of two modules which are studied sequentially.

You will begin by focusing on the assessment and management of patients following emergency events which have led to admission to a critical care environment. You will then concentrate specifically upon the development of effective leadership within a critical care environment.

The intention is to develop a practitioner who provides clinical nursing leadership, supervision and support to teams to optimise safe standards of patient care.

How will I study?

There will typically be ten days of face-to-face learning, covering the theoretical aspects of the programme, per module. This will take the form of a combination of lectures, seminars, simulation-based learning, objective structure clinical examinations (OSCE) workshops and tutorials.

The programme also includes a significant proportion of work-based learning during which you will be supported and assessed by a clinical mentor.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of written examinations, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), written assessments and practice-based competency achievements.

The programme team comprises of front line clinicians from Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and academic experts from Edge Hill University. The research activities and educational roles of the programme team are varied and link to both theory and practice. This course in detail

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. Your learning will be enquiry focused, helping you to develop as a reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware practitioner.

You will complete a master’s-level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature; or other scholarly output.

This programme is intended for existing health care practitioners or graduates with a science background who wish to work as part of the anaesthetic team.

The Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme will develop a practitioner role that enables the anaesthesia team to have more staff working differently. Presently in the UK only doctors who have had specialist training in anaesthesia can administer anaesthetics.

The PA(A) is a health professional who will expand the anaesthetic service and make operating theatres work more efficiently. You will work alongside other members of the anaesthetic team and under the supervision of your anaesthetist.

The programme is studied over 27 months full-time which includes 24 months of academic study and clinical training, followed by 3 months of supervised practice.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the 120 taught credits of the Postgraduate Diploma: Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) will have the option of transferring to the Physicians’ Assistant (Anaesthesia) MSc Programme. Award of the MSc will require the completion of an additional 60 credit Dissertation module, which would take the form of a research project of their own choosing. The MSc is self funded costing £1980 in 2014/2015 (subject to change each year).

This programme has been developed in response to an emerging healthcare role, namely the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). It is designed to equip and enhance the healthcare practitioner with knowledge and skills in the expanding field of advanced practice, especially within secondary care.

The curriculum and competency framework for Advanced Clinical Practitioner training has been developed by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine. This has informed the curriculum content and structure of this programme.

Central to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner educational process is the development of a five year credentialing portfolio, of which a prerequisite is a master's level Advanced Practice award (Royal College of Emergengy Medicine, 2015); this programme aims to fulfil this requirement. The evidence-based credentialing portfolio is not part of the programme and should be completed in partnership with your employing organisation.

Graduate Diploma Photography will give you the practical skills you'll need to define yourself as a leading photographer and by encouraging the development of a strong conceptual approach to your personal practice, achieve a defined identity in you work.

The course will give you an invaluable understanding of the photography industry and the business aspect of professional photography, as well as introduce you to key contacts and help you build relationships.
Building on the rich heritage of photography teaching at London College of Communication, Graduate Diploma Photography will open a variety of career opportunities in professional photography.

During your studies, you'll work towards developing a high quality portfolio suitable for presentation when approaching clients for future commissions or industry roles. In addition, you'll work on set and self-initiated projects which promote learning through discovery, interaction and response to change.

For those wishing to continue their study the theory and research elements of the course will also prepare you for continued learning at a higher level of study. The Graduate Diploma in Photography is taught within the School of Media at LCC.

Autumn, Term One (11 weeks)

Unit summary:
Unit 1: Professional Photography in Practice (Photographic Technology and Applied Production Skills) (40 credits)
Through a series of workshops and project briefs this unit will to enable you to develop and utilise specialist photographic skills and knowledge to solve photographic problems. Through planning, implementation and review, and engagement with industry, you will be able to apply your photographic skills in a realistic professional context and identify areas in which you may wish to develop your practice.
Unit 2: Critical Approaches (Photographic Culture, History and Theory) (20 credits)
This unit will give you the opportunity to study major developments and critical approaches in photography. To enable you to gain an understanding of the contemporary significance of photography and to place your own work in a historical cultural context. This unit is particularly useful to those students wishing to bridge to Master level study.

Through the research and development of a comprehensive project you will be able to recognise creative influences in your own work and develop an understanding of your own creative ambitions.

This unit is a culmination of your previous units, offering you the hands-on opportunity to develop a professional body of work that showcases your personal identity. This is the most significant unit in that you are expected to produce a professional portfolio of work in which you will be required to demonstrate a rigorous and critical analysis of your interests in professional photography, strongly influenced by your area of specialism.

You will explore and gain working knowledge of contemporary business practice with an emphasis on operating as a freelance practitioner. This course is mostly delivered online, so you can study with minimum disruption to your professional and personal life while benefitting from world-class teaching.

The programme provides knowledge and understanding of:

  • Legislation, guidelines and radiation safety in relation to the use of CBCT in dentistry
  • Justification and selection criteria for CBCT and dental radiography: the value and role of each technique
  • CBCT appearance of normal anatomy, artifacts and pathological conditions of the dento-alveolar region including:

Developmental conditions

  • Impacted teeth
  • Cysts and tumours
  • Radiological signs of benign and malignant lesions
  • Bone disease
  • Bone healing and post-surgical change
  • Soft tissue calcifications
  • Understanding of radiological signs of disease

Students will acquire skills in:

  • The process of making a differential diagnosis using radiological evidence
  • Image manipulation (anonymised scans and viewing software* provided)
  • Understanding which clinical problems may or may not be investigated using modern dental X-ray techniques
  • Viewing strategies for certain clinical applications e.g. impacted lower third molars, implants, endodontics, orthodontics
  • Understanding variations in normal anatomy in dental and maxillofacial regions
  • Critical awareness of limitations of CBCT and dental radiography and the impact of imaging artefacts on radiological interpretation
  • Writing radiological reports using a structured approach and concise description

Teaching

The course is a blended learning programme taught primarily online through the King’s College London’s online learning environment, KEATS (King's E-learning and Teaching Service) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. Content is supplemented by online seminars and tutorials delivered by teaching staff.

The compulsory face-to-face component takes place for five consecutive days in September at King’s College London, Guy’s campus. This component will consist of four days of lectures, practical exercises, mock oral exams and tutor feedback, which will help to prepare students for the final exams taking place on the fifth day.

*In order to view and manipulate CT scans during your online self study activities, you will be required to use free software that only runs on Windows operating systems. More details will be given at the start of the course.

Notes for applicants

The course does not provide great detail on implant planning or image-guided planning/surgery, for which dedicated software is often required.

We have designed the postgraduate training for dentists who want to understand CBCT imaging and wish to write interpretation reports on CBCT scans of dento-alveolar region.

This course is not intended to train a dentist to become a radiologist. In UK, a radiologist is trained within a scheme approved by the regional LETB/Deanery, in a hospital setting, which requires minimum of 4 years full-time training and is examined by the Royal College of Radiologists.

Course format and assessment

The course is divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 60 credits.

You are required to take:

  • Physics and Regulations (20 credits)
  • Anatomy (20 credits)
  • Interpretation (20 credits)

Each module consists of 6 units. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Students are assessed through a combination of coursework, written and oral examinations.
