The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is a part-time, modular course completed in two to three years by surgical trainees.

Delivered in collaboration with the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (http://www.nds.ox.ac.uk/) it is designed to prepare senior surgical trainees for life as independent specialists by providing key skills and knowledge essential for modern practice, which are not fully represented or are omitted from most postgraduate training curricula. The course is unique as its part-time nature is designed to allow students to fit their study around work.

The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice provides a foundation in some of the most important additional life long skills which the future leaders of the profession need to acquire. Surgeons in the future will work as part of multi-disciplinary teams in complex organisations, and will need to adapt and develop new skills and roles throughout their professional lives. Thus the syllabus covers management skills, quality improvement, leadership, teamwork and patient safety, as well as an introduction to the principles of medical education and clinical research methods. The knowledge gained during this course will stand students in good stead throughout their careers.

Programme details

The MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is organised around six compulsory modules, plus a work-based research project and dissertation. The programme is normally completed in two to three years. Students are full members of the University of Oxford and are matriculated as members of an Oxford college.

The course features a significant component of online and distance learning, as well as one week of intensive teaching in Oxford per module.

Each module takes place once a year, giving students the opportunity to individualise their patterns of study.

During the course there is an exceptional opportunity for an introduction, with hands-on experience, to leading edge modern surgical technology such as the Da Vinci robot. The programme also features lectures by staff from the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine based in the world-renowned Department of Primary Care Health Sciences.

Taught by global experts, the modules in this programme can also be taken as individual stand-alone courses.

Course aims

The overarching aim of the MSc in Surgical Science and Practice is to provide the next generation of surgeons with the tools to build and lead successful surgical units delivering safe, high quality, high reliability care.

By the end of the course candidates will be able to understand the following important principles:

- How to evaluate clinical research evidence critically and understand how it should be interpreted and applied to one’s own context and practice;

- How to design, conduct and evaluate teaching and training for postgraduate clinicians, and how to assess curricula and teaching programmes;

- Financial and quality management ideas, and methods for analysing and restructuring the systems in which surgeons work;

- A theoretical understanding of the use of modern surgical technology linked to baseline practical training in minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques;

- The teamwork, leadership and communication skills required for effective and safe working in a modern surgical environment.

Teaching methods

The class-based modules include a period of preparatory study, a week of intensive face-to-face lectures and tutorials, followed by a period for assignment work. Attendance at modules is a requirement for study. Some non-classroom activities are provided at facilities elsewhere in the University, including surgical simulators and operating theatres on the University's hospital sites. The course includes taught material on research skills.

The taught modules include group work, discussions, guest lectures, and interaction and feedback with tutors and lecturers. Practical work develops the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject. This includes supervised access to surgical simulators and robots as part of the Surgical Technology and Robotics module.

A virtual learning environment (VLE) provides extensive support between modules.

Assessment methods

To complete the MSc, students will need to:

- Attend the six compulsory modules in Oxford, and undertake assessed written assignments for each module;
- Complete a dissertation on a topic selected by the candidate in consultation with the supervisor and approved by the Standing Committee.

Dissertation

The dissertation will be founded on a work-based research project that will build on the material studied in the taught modules. The dissertation should normally not exceed 15,000 words.

The project will normally be supervised by an academic supervisor from the University of Oxford, and an employer-based mentor.

It aims to offer knowledge and expertise to provide a transition between theory and your own clinical practice. The course draws together a collection of fundamental information in an e-learning format, with an emphasis on the general principles of surgical practice rather than on the management of specific conditions.

The full MSc course takes two years to complete, although you can choose to exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after nine months or a Postgraduate Diploma after 18 months, if you have fulfilled all the criteria for those awards.

The taught component introduces you to the multifaceted nature of caring for surgical patients, from admission through to discharge. The modular approach allows you to evaluate care from an evidence-based perspective, starting with admission and preoperative preparation through to postoperative care and discharge. Professional issues, including clinical governance and inter-professional practice, are also covered. The e-learning assessments are structured to enable you to evaluate the topic in relation to your practice areas of interest and professional base.

Most students are self-funded; however some students obtain awards from charities and trusts.

Studies at MSc dissertation level will largely consist of guided independent study and research, making use of the extensive learning and research facilities available. A project supervisor will be allocated to support and advise you on researching and writing up your specific dissertation topic. A formative module on Research Methods will be delivered online via Cardiff University’s online learning platform, Learning Central.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

The LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, an Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law student may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits.

Following the successful completion of the taught modules, Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law students proceed to Part II, which is composed of two projects (LLM Research Projects). At least one of the LLM Research Projects must be written in the area of International and Transnational Aspects of Oil and Gas Law or Oil & Gas Law: Contracts and Liabilities.  The LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law Research Projects will customarily be researched and written up over the summer period and are designed to enable LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law students to develop their research skills.

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching is conducted in small classes and our students always find an opportunity to participate in discussions and put their views across. Teaching in the LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law modules is supported by the use of our Blackboard virtual learning environment, which facilitates online teaching and learning. Through Blackboard, students have access to course materials, handouts, and lecture notes, as well as shared areas for group work, online discussions, and exchanging ideas with fellow students. 

All LLM in Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, with an equal weighting of 50% normally given to each component in the final total assessment.

Meet our Students

Ole Ollmann (Germany – LLM in Oil and Gas Law, now Oil, Gas and Renewable Energy Law)

Whilst working on his dissertations, Ole was offered an internship at Hapag-Lloyd AG, one of the oldest and most respected shipping companies in Germany and a leading globally operating container line. During his three month internship, Ole was involved in the day to day bunker procurement and bunker trade practice in the bunkering department. Ole was offered valuable inside into oil markets, trading and hedging practice as well as procurement strategies of a large container line. He procured bunker fuels for ships, prepared the necessary documentation and also dealt with bunker claims.

In addition, he dealt with general matters of the relevant law, such as general terms and conditions of sale and charter party terms pertaining to bunker fuel. Ole found his internship a great experience which gave him an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge gained during the LLM program. After completion of his internship, Ole moved to a permanent position in the chartering / operations department of a specialised tanker owner and operator.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track. Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

BMT Hi-Q Sigma to present Case Week Project

BMT Hi-Q Sigma, a Management Consultancy providing advice and insight across Government, Defence, Energy and Transport industries, will present a business problem to practice track students as part of Case Week in June.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with presentations to BMT Hi-Q Sigma.

This course in detail

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. Your learning will be enquiry focused, helping you to develop as a reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware practitioner.

You will complete a master’s-level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature; or other scholarly output.

The course will be taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BA in Mental Health Nursing and our new four-year BSc Adult and Mental Health Nursing and BSc Children's and Mental Health Nursing.

We are currently redeveloping and revalidating all of our Pre-Registration Nursing programmes and we expect to run new MSc and BSc Mental Health Nursing courses from September 2016.

Working at master's level, you will focus on developing a knowledge base in mental health nursing that is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the midwifery master's programme, you will be entered onto the midwifery part of the register of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the United Kingdom.

This course in detail

The following midwifery courses are offered:
- a three-year midwifery programme for those with a first class honours degree plus Biology or Human Biology A level at grade B or above. Previous health care experience is desirable, but not essential.

- a 21-month post-experience master’s degree for experienced adult nurses registered with the NMC who have a first class honours degree.

The practice and educational content of the course is the same as the BSc course; however, assessment will be at master's level. This will enhance development of critical thinking skills which will prepare students for further postgraduate studies. In addition, Midwifery MSc students will have the opportunity to undertake primary research for their dissertation.

During Year 1, you will undertake level 6 modules. In years 2 and 3 you will study level 7 modules.

As the main healthcare professionals for the pregnant mother and her family throughout the childbearing process, midwives play a fundamental role in providing care and advice during pregnancy and birth, and in the postnatal period. Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Child) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. In addition, the development of the children’s nursing modules has been informed by key guidance and the contemporary issues challenging the profession and service, such as the recognition of the sick child, safeguarding of children, transition into adult care, involvement of children, young people and their parents in service development (RCPCH 2010), promotion of mental health and psychological wellbeing (DOH 2006), withholding and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment (RCPCH 2004) and standards for the development of “young people friendly” services (DOH 2011).

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. The MNurs course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

98% of students go on to work or further study within six months of graduation (Unistats, 2014).
