Course overview

This course enables you to practice as a pipeline engineer. The oil and gas industry help to specify the curriculum so we meet their requirements in high-pressure offshore and onshore pipelines.

You will gain: an understanding of the key steps in a pipeline's lifecycle: design, construction, installation, asset management, maintenance and dismantling; experience from specialists in pipeline operation; the ability to develop a thesis through selection of appropriate experimental, computer simulation or data analysis procedures; skills in identifying, designing and applying laboratory tests to solve pipeline engineering problems; knowledge in applying appropriate mathematical models in the simulation of pipeline engineering problems.

Teaching consists of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and personal supervision covering a variety of topics in pipeline engineering. The degree is taught using a mix of academic staff from the School of Marine Science and Technology as well as visiting lecturers and experts from industry.

You will choose an individual dissertation project. This may be a critical review and/or computational or experimental project using our world leading testing facilities. You also benefit from participating in projects sponsored directly by industry partners whenever they are available.

The proposed programme consists of 180 credits, which will comprise of eight taught modules, each worth 15 credits, and the dissertation, worth 60 credits. Read more
The proposed programme consists of 180 credits, which will comprise of eight taught modules, each worth 15 credits, and the dissertation, worth 60 credits. The programme duration will be 12 months for full time study, or 24 months for part time. The delivery of the taught part of the programme will take place during the Autumn and Spring terms over 24 weeks. Students will be encouraged to start their dissertation at the beginning of the programme. During the Summer term students will be expected to intensify their effort on their dissertation project, researching the dissertation topic full time. Part time students will be allowed an extended period to execute their dissertation project in line with the overall programme duration. However, they will be expected to devote an equivalent of one day per week on their dissertation project.

This programme has been developed with extensive consultation with the industry. It will be delivered primarily by Brunel staff members and also by industrial specialists. The programme structure is shown below and comprises two parts. The first, taught part, includes a set of core modules. The programme provides fundamentals of structural and process engineering, and focuses on providing an understand of how to design oil and gas structures such as pipelines, offshore and onshore to withstand internal loading induced by complex internal flows of oil and gas and also external loads such as waves and wind. Throughout fundamental mathematical, computational, experimental, testing and inspection techniques as well as codes of practice are taken into account. Civil engineering and construction aspects are also taught. Part two comprises the dissertation project.

This fully online (international onshore students are required to study the course on-campus), multidisciplinary degree is designed for health professionals seeking to develop their skills and knowledge in public health, while continuing to work. If you already work in public health, or want to move into this field, this course can prepare you for advancement in your organisation or field, providing you with practical skills and helping you to broaden your knowledge and skill set.

You will gain a thorough grounding in the major areas of public health and also have the opportunity to specialise in your area of interest. In your first year you will undertake a number of core units including epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion, health policy, public health nutrition and climate change. In your second year you will choose one of the following streams to specialise in:

-Applied epidemiology and biostatistics: epidemiology, geographic information systems, epidemiology of infectious diseases and advanced applied biostatistics
-Public health: public health nutrition practice, organisation of healthcare systems, epidemiology of infectious diseases and health partnerships, politics and power

Master of Public Health students come from a variety of fields, including medicine, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy, pharmacy, dentistry, biomedical and lab-based sciences, nutrition, occupational therapy, occupational health, environmental health, health promotion, statistics and management, among others. 



As a graduate, you may work in a number of fields, including health administration, health protection and health promotion. You may work in the public sector or with non-government organisations, such as the Heart Foundation, the Cancer Council, Red Cross, research institutes, universities and with international bodies like the World Health Organization.

Credit for previous study

Applications for credit for recognised learning (CRL) are assessed on an individual basis.

Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Public Health or Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health or equivalent may apply for CRL.

Applicants with at least two years’ post-bachelor work experience may apply for up to one semester (100 credits) of CRL.
