Programme description

Conservation Medicine is an emerging discipline that studies the complex relationships and interactions between animal health, human health and ecosystem health. This programme provides veterinarians with the skills and knowledge required to be effective practitioners of conservation medicine.

This programme is designed to address the demand for online training in conservation medicine and provides in-depth training in a modular flexible format, ideal for veterinarians who wish to achieve a world-class award while maintaining busy professional and personal commitments.

Participants will gain the capacity and necessary expertise to contribute effectively to this rapidly growing multidisciplinary field and to enhance career opportunities.

This programme is affiliated with the University's Global Health Academy.

Online learning

Our online learning technology is fully interactive, award-winning and enables you to communicate with our highly qualified teaching staff from the comfort of your own home or workplace.

Our online students not only have access to Edinburgh’s excellent resources, but also become part of a supportive online community, bringing together students and tutors from around the world.

Programme structure

The programme is taught part time over three years, but its flexible nature will allow you a maximum of six years to complete it. Each year will consist of three, 11-week terms, structured into two blocks of five weeks of study, with a week in between for independent study and reflection.

It is also possible to complete the masters within two years by studying more than one course at a time so all taught courses are completed in year one, with the second year devoted to a dissertation project.

There are also options for studying for a certificate (one-two years) or a diploma (two-four years).

Expert tutors will support you through every stage of the programme and you can engage with fellow students in supportive and constructive online networks.

Your progress will be assessed through online presentations, essays, critical reviews of literature, student self- reflection activities, short answer questions, scientific posters, group wiki events, and peer review activities.

Year 1

  • Introduction to Conservation Medicine
  • Eco-System Health and Species Conservation
  • Applied Epidemiology and Surveillance for Conservation Medicine

Year 2

You will study two core courses - Veterinary Techniques and Interventions for Conservation Medicine, and Wildlife Disease Management - plus four optional modules from a choice of ten.

Year 3

During the written reflective element of the programme students will have the opportunity to further develop their scientific skills and utilise scientific theory. This written element allows a choice of either a written dissertation, a casebook relating to relevant professional experience, a personal portfolio of reflective and practical activity, or a short research project.

Postgraduate Professional Development

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

Career opportunities

Graduates can use their conservation medicine qualification to enhance their career prospects in academia, research, governmental and non-governmental organisations and consultancies.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

The majority of the content of the programme is delivered online to allow you to engage in flexible study alongside your clinical practice. To complement the online teaching there is a face-to-face induction event at the University and residential teaching weeks in the first and second years of the programme. Reflective, practice-based elements are provided through professional experiential learning and online virtual workshops.

Methods of assessment

You will be assessed through written assignments and case studies, a portfolio of clinical experience, the OSCE Examination and a Dissertation. Each unit is assessed individually.

Assignments are delivered online and must also be submitted online. The formative assessment includes moderated online discussions, self-assessment questions and online multiple choice tests.

Summative assessment will vary between units but will typically include some of the following:

Compilation of portfolio of evidence [SEM in Practice]
OSCE examination [SEM in Practice]
Maintaining a reflective practitioner portfolio [SEM in Practice]
Essays
Case studies
Short answer questions
Recorded consultations

- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):
If you have a previous qualification, or undertaken postgraduate units from another institution, you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning.

Depending on the programme of study, you can gain APL for up to 50% of the total credits required (this credit must have been obtained within the previous five years).

- Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
You may also apply for APEL by submitting a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating that you have successfully achieved the learning outcomes for the specific unit(s) you seek exemption from.

We recommend you discuss this with the Director of Studies first to ensure this is suitable, as creating your portfolio can be very time consuming.

We will not permit exemptions of fractional units, and so the minimum threshold for the applications of APEL procedures will be a single, free standing unit (including three credit units). The maximum threshold for exemption will normally be 50% of the total credits required for a programme of study, for example, a 45-credit exemption towards a 90-credit Masters degree.

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. The Department's postgraduate teaching and research programmes now form part of the Faculty's new Graduate School, also launched in 2010, providing postgraduate students with dedicated support and a strong community in which to base their studies - whether on campus or by distance learning.

In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the Department divides its activities between two main pillars: Healthcare and Population Health – one focuses on the NHS, healthcare and health services research and the other focuses on population health, healthy living, sport & physical activity and tobacco control; each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities. Furthermore, there is a bridging spine between both pillars and which houses the Professional Doctorate in Health, Research in Health Practice and the administrative, finance, learning & teaching development, marketing and support activities of the Department.

The Department’s aims are:

- To develop a research portfolio that is both of the highest academic standard and has applications in the real world
- To build on external links with the public services and other bodies concerned with health and society
- To innovate design and delivery of healthcare services
- To change corporate approaches to healthy organisations
- To support government reform of health and social care provision
- To identify and facilitate opportunities for academic collaboration and new developments.

The Department's postgraduate taught programmes combine academic excellence with flexible and innovative design and delivery; our postgraduate portfolio is distinguished by the provision of a number of Professional Masters and a Professional Doctorate programme designed to be studied part-time by learners working in a wide range of healthcare roles from all around the world. All our postgraduate courses are taught online and this has proved to be one of our unique selling points, with students able to continue within their practice area or working environment whilst gaining a further qualification.

The Department is renowned for its exemplary attention to educational design, integrating knowledge with research evidence and resulting in programmes which are highly relevant to contemporary practice; in addition, the Department boasts some of the most innovative and successful approaches to online and part-time education, recognised through a number of awards.

At all levels, learning and teaching in the Department provides a strong focus on high quality education for real world situations and produces graduates with skills and knowledge relevant to professional roles and in high demand from employers.

Teaching programmes on offer within the Department include:

- Sport & Exercise Medicine, the world renowned flexible masters programme exclusively for doctors
- Sports Physiotherapy, a specialist programme designed by physiotherapists for physiotherapists
- Research in Health Practice, a programme launched in 2008 aimed at health and social care professionals interested in conducting their own research
- The innovative Professional Doctorate in Health which focuses on both Population Health and Healthcare within the Department, providing a doctoral level programme to develop expert practitioners and researchers in practice.

Careers information
Postgraduate research students gain a wealth of experience to assist them with their next step and are offered personal career advice at the University. The Department has an established research training skills programme for all research students. The taught programmes enable students to extend their health and social care career pathways and to build important networks for further professional opportunities.

Your programme of study

A good MBA can really make you stand out for the top jobs in any type of business in fast paced major growth, transformation, innovation and operational change in any country and business discipline area. You develop insights across the top discipline functions such as finance, strategy, economics and project management, marketing, leading and managing people, supply chain and new business creation. These are all disciplines within themselves which you rapidly acquire skills and knowledge to manage successfully. These are essential disciplines to many known high street brands, service industries, online businesses and high growth start ups which ensure that if you start a business using existing skills or a new team that you are likely to provide a high growth enterprise very quickly. Alternatively you may have been employed within a sector undergoing a real threat to business existence which involves you in making changes very quickly at operational level using the range of disciplines you learn.

In this situation you can overcome the threats quickly to ensure long term viability whilst managing short term risks to business and you can be a very sought after individual due to your ability to quickly assess what needs to be done with minimum impact to allow long term profitability. Many brands have recently been disrupted by mass communications and the rapid rise in online trading, some were able to quickly re-organise their business model to avoid going out of business, some were able to innovate and others relied on a wide variety of techniques to allow them to reinvent themselves. MBA positions are normally fast paced but very rewarding in terms of achievements and business satisfaction.

The Global MBA is ideal if you are a working professional, you want to change direction, you want to add business skills to pursue an enterprise or you have other commitments which prevent you from studying at a University campus. It is delivered by one of the ancient universities in the UK in partnership with IDI

MSc Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health

This is an online Master specialisation within the MSc Nutrition and Health.

Online Master

The online master specialisation is designed for part-time study (approx. 20 hrs/week) to combine work and study or in the context of Life-Long-Learning. A course-programme of 2 years will be followed by a tailor-made internship and Master thesis. The internship and thesis will together take up either 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. During the courses, you will closely collaborate with lecturers, tutors and fellow distance learning students using a virtual learning platform. The course programme includes a short stay of one week on Wageningen Campus together with the other students in this programme. There are options to organise the academic internship and Master thesis in your own professional context, either parttime or full-time.

Programme summary

Do you think it is interesting to study the role that nutrition and lifestyle play in the development of diseases? Epidemiologists try to determine such relationships in large groups of people. Epidemiology is the basic science of public health. Research results are the starting points for health advice and lead to a greater understanding of cause and effect. If it is known that certain behaviour leads to a disease, then you can quantify the impact of that behaviour and establish effective measures for disease prevention. The acquired knowledge can be used in health policymaking and intervention programmes in both developing and developed countries. You will be helping to improve the overall health of people and may be able to prevent foodrelated diseases from developing.

The master specialisation Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health addresses the design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological research, both interventional and observational. It focuses on the aetiology and prevention of diseases, with specific reference to dietary patterns, nutritional factors and lifestyle. Central issues are assessment of exposure, risk factors of disease, biomarkers for health status and analysis and interpretation of major study designs. Since you need expertise and competences in both nutritional epidemiology ànd public health to be able to fully understand this domain, the study programme consists of different courses and trainings combining these two fields.

Nutritional epidemiology courses focus on the design, conduct, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological research, both in the clinical domain and in free living population groups. Concerning health outcomes, the emphasis is on dietrelated diseases and conditions, such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and certain infectious diseases. Nutritional epidemiology is closely related to clinical research and causal inference in the biomedical domain, relevant to underpinning public health interventions in dietary patterns and lifestyle. The acquired evidence from epidemiological research has to be translated into public health policies and health promotion programmes, both at the local, national and international level. Public health courses address the design, organisation, implementation and evaluation of intervention programs that address the lifestyles of individuals (e.g., behaviour, food choice, physical activity, well-being) and/or societal context (e.g. work, school, media, policies). Public health has close relationships with methods and theories from psychological, social, economic, agriculture and political research.

Your future career

Graduates of the Master Nutrition and Health greatly value the research skills they acquired in the programme. After graduation, many of them begin working as researchers or PhD students. Another group becomes advisors, trainers or take up other jobs in the private sector. The majority of graduates finds employment at universities (including university medical centres), research institutes, in the public sector (WHO, NGO's, national health services) and some find employment in companies involved with nutrition and health. Graduates work in both developing and developed countries.

Alumnus Santiago Rodas.
Santiago always wanted to work with nutrition in developing countries. He worked for UNICEF and was the chair of a national nutrition programme. But then he felt the need to obtain a master’s degree in public health nutrition: “This master taught me how to use the up-to-date scientific evidence for programme design and implementation. From the courses, I acquired the technical skills to do research and from my thesis and internship at the World Food Programme (WFP) I learned how to put research into practice. Now I work as an international consultant of the Policy, Programme and Innovation Division of the WFP at its headquarters in Rome.”

Your programme of study

If you want to get into renewable energy University of Aberdeen offer an online programme which you can study flexibly to fit around your work, life and anywhere in the world. It is a great way to study a degree from a known and trusted brand with exactly the same content as the on campus version but delivered entirely online.

Renewable energy engineering is in high demand globally as we find alternate methods of energy harvesting to meet our future energy needs and future proof our reliance on hydrocarbons as much as it is possible to do. Considerable innovation and improvements are continuous within this field as it is by no means at a stage where society can rely on it to fuel all needs. The sector is interdisciplinary and this programme provides you with a wide range of very useful skills and knowledge to problem solve and progress current renewables and work towards innovation whether that is in a renewables company or as a start up.

You study electrical and electronic engineering pertinent to smart grid, sensing energy use, developing energy harvesting techniques, and renewable energy exchange, plus ability to harvest energy from all of our natural resources including wind, solar, hydro, marine, geothermal, biomass and other newly developing areas. Renewables is definitely an employable sector as governments are now challenged by finite resources coming from traditional areas, climate change and societal concerns about how we harvest energy in the future and our ability to survive climatic issues, population increase and manage work and life.
