There is no better time to get to know Eastern Europe than right now. The region from the Czech Republic to Russia, Estonia to Bulgaria, Poland to Romania, shares a long tradition of communist rule. But that changed 25 years ago, and the seismic shift is still felt across Europe today.

Join us to study on the world’s only online master program in East European Studies. You can stay on the job while gaining the knowledge, professional skills and network you need to become a leader in your field. Choose full-time or part-time study and take advantage of our additional exchange programs and training opportunities.

Our master program will qualify you for higher positions in NGOs, multinational corporations and other international organizations within Eastern Europe, as well as in governmental agencies where your knowledge of Eastern Europe will make you an expert.

At the Center for Global Politics you will earn your master degree in a convenient blended learning program at Freie Universität Berlin, one of Europe's leading universities. You will do most of your studies online and join us in Berlin for short in-house classes twice each year with a diverse range of peers from around the globe. We will provide you with individualized guidance from our distinguished network of international faculty, headed by Prof. Dr. Klaus Segbers.

Come and learn to navigate complexity with us.

Program

East European Studies provides its students with knowledge of Eastern Europe. The advanced graduate degree program teaches the necessary skills for employment by public and private organizations in or concerning the region and also for further scientific work.

The program consists of three different components:
- the online modules offered via our online learning management system
- one-week (Monday through Friday) in-house classes twice a year
- a master thesis.

The complete master program accounts for 120 ECTS credits.

Tuition fees per year of study

- for the full-time option: 5,950 € (plus Freie Universität Berlin university fees of 117,40 €)
- for the part-time option: 3,225 € per year of study (plus 117,40 € Freie Universität Berlin university fees)

Costs arising from the obligatory in-house classes must be paid by the students themselves (travel expenses, room and board).

East European Studies Online has been designed as a two-year full-time study program. In the past, most of our students have successfully managed to combine their studies with the obligations of a full-time job. However, for some students in highly challenging professional contexts, it might be more suitable to study East European Studies Online part-time. If you consider this option, please be aware that you will have to allocate a greater period of time for your studies and tuition fees will be higher.

East European Studies Online offers a virtual exchange option with the Aleksanteri Institute (AI) in Helsinki. One of our modules may be substituted with up to two online modules offered by Aleksanteri Institute (depending on module length and credits).

Without knowledge of at least one East European language, access to the different mind-sets and cultures within Eastern Europe is relatively difficult. Thus, basic linguistic proficiency in one of the national languages of Eastern Europe is an asset.

Learning Objectives

East European Studies Online provides you with the ideal opportunity to gain insight into Eastern Europe, to enhance your global career perspective, and to become part of an exciting network of experts on Eastern Europe while staying on the job. We educate you for success in exciting positions in academia, government, consulting, international organizations, and the media. East European Studies Online offers a holistic educational approach: expertise in relevant knowledge fields, development of your e-competencies, and honing of your soft and intercultural skills.

The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies offers master’s degrees comprised of elements from other RRU programs, enabling us to provide an education shaped by your unique aspirations. Students benefit greatly from an individualized education that offers programs pursuant to their unique interests and schedules, while employers are attracted to candidates capable of meeting the specific demands of the professional world. That’s how everyone wins. That’s why Royal Roads graduate students are always in demand.

Our System

This graduate degree program is offered in 2 formats: online or a blended delivery that combines online coursework with one on-campus residency. And since we’re committed to providing individualized education, all of our students work closely with our program head to develop individual academic plans tailored to their specific needs. Drawing from two or more areas of study, this unique system enables Royal Roads graduate students to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study that combines personal passion and professional interest.

*This is not an independent studies or cohort model program. Courses are not self-paced and their start and end dates can vary.

Our Students

Royal Roads University draws more than just master’s students seeking an active role in the design of their educational experience. It also attracts driven, focused individuals who want more from their careers and who share a common desire to apply their education meaningfully throughout their organizations and communities. Most of our graduate students are already working professionals. That’s why we’re committed to providing a program that integrates professional experience with a practical education.

Commitment

Requiring 2 to 2.5 years of study, this degree program provides flexible scheduling options that combine online MA degree learning with one optional short term on-campus residency.

*Each online course can require up to 20 hours of study per week. Working professionals are encouraged to take this into consideration when developing a program of study in the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program.

Delivery Model

This unique program allows each student to work directly with faculty to create an individualized schedule of study that draws together courses of personal and professional interest from other masters and graduate certificate programs at Royal Roads University. Students select no more than 50 per cent of their courses from any one program to assure interdisciplinary breadth of study. Individuals may do one on-campus residency in another masters program, or they may complete their degree completely online.

Online Courses
Online courses are not independent studies courses; they have deadlines for assignments and, more importantly, require posting deadlines to foster the fruitful exchange of ideas that make virtual communities thrive. In building your schedule of study, working professionals should consider taking no more than one online course at a time as each course can require up to 20 hours of work per week.

On-Campus Residencies
Students who elect to do a residency work on two or three courses simultaneously in a blended model of delivery. Residencies begin with a pre-residency online, followed by two to three weeks of intensive on-campus coursework and subsequently, several weeks of post-residency work. While the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program recommends a residency in another masters program during the course of studies, residency options demand unimpeded time on-campus.

The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program is driven by a student’s interdisciplinary research and career interests. A prospective student’s application needs to provide a rationale for the proposed combination of courses and academic fields of study.

Whereas most graduate interdisciplinary degrees draw from traditional, single disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology, ecology, etc.), Royal Roads’ MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program offers a unique take on interdisciplinarity. This program draws not from single disciplines but from multidisciplinary academic program areas (e.g., humanitarian studies, environmental education and communication, leadership, etc.); in addition, the program focuses on applied research instrumental to working professionals’ career goals.

Individualized Schedule of Study

There are three paths through the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies degree:
Coursework - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-30 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs

Major Project - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-18 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs
-12 credits dedicated to a major project usually aligned with a student’s professional field

Thesis - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits of required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-18 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs
-12 credits dedicated to a master’s thesis

Where needed, a student may take advantage of a directed study course to further familiarity with scholarship in a particular area of study.

Prospective students must contact the College of Interdisciplinary Studies to discuss development of their unique program schedules.

The MPA + MS Nursing Dual-Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Science (MS) in Nursing.

The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program takes advantage of the complementary foci of the two degree programs. Both programs have a clear commitment to preparing students to help their communities through advanced professional knowledge and skills. Accordingly, the dual degree emphasizes community health and professional management to prepare nurses to be effective administrators. The dual degree is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.
Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

All applicants must submit the following:

- Online graduate degree application and application fee
- Transcripts from each college/university you have attended
- Two letters of recommendation
- Personal statement (2-3 pages) describing your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee.
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
- Official GRE scores. GMAT scores may be submitted in lieu of GRE scores.

And, for international applicants:
- International Student Financial Statement form
- Official bank statement/proof of support
- Official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic scores

Applicants must also meet the following program-specific requirements:

MPA:
- Letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant in a professional capacity, such as professors, work supervisors, and professionals from organizations where the applicant has served as a volunteer or in another capacity. When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS Nursing:
- Undergraduate degree in nursing from a program which is accredited by a nursing accreditation organization
- Previous (successful completion of a) course in descriptive statistics
- A license to practice as a registered professional nurse
- Passing completion of the NCLEX examination (must be completed prior to the start of clinical courses)
- One year of full-time employment as a registered nurse is strongly encouraged (Candidates without one year of previous full-time employment may wish to consider enrolling in a part-time program while they acquire the needed work experience)

The middle residency incorporates two courses, may have a more directed field-based orientation, and helps prepare students for their thesis research. The final residency allows completing students to present their thesis findings to the larger environmental education and RRU community and incorporates their final courses, preparing them to be leaders in the field.

Students should expect to be fully occupied during the residency period. The regular classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with homework, readings, and team meetings done outside of these hours. There are activities during the regular workday and in the evenings. In addition to educational activities, there are a number of planned field trips and recreational events.

Online Courses
Online courses are delivered through the innovative use of internet technologies. Students draw on a range of learning resources, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to develop and complete the electronic submission of both individual and team assignments.

Students take one nine-week distance course at a time. Each distance course requires an average time commitment of 10 - 20 hours per week.

Program Laddering
The structure of the program is laddered so that individuals are able to complete a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or full Master's degree.

-The Graduate Certificate program was designed to be taken on its own, or to ladder into the Diploma or Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication. The Certificate would be awarded upon successful completion of a residency and one distance-based semester (approximately five months). Students may apply for transfer to the Diploma or MA stream during the Graduate Certificate program, or apply to the Diploma or MA program once they have completed the Certificate
-The Graduate Diploma program was designed to be taken on its own, or to ladder into the MA in Environmental Education and Communication. The Diploma would be awarded upon successful completion of two residencies and one distance-based semester (approximately 12 months). Students may apply for transfer to the MA stream during the Graduate Diploma program, or apply to the MA program once they have completed the Diploma
-The full two-year program leading to the MA is delivered through a combination of three residential periods, three distance-based semesters, and a thesis

Delivery Model

The Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology is delivered as a blended program (incorporating online learning with an on-campus residency), as well as a purely online model.

Pre-Residency
Students begin the Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology program with a very short online pre-residency session that introduces them to the instructor, familiarizes them with the course content and materials, and connects them with other students in the program. This blended learning format allows students to benefit from the synergy of on-campus learning and direct interaction with leading faculty members, while still meeting the demands of career and lifestyle. The result is accessible, high quality learning with minimal professional disruption.

Residency
The 10-day residency is a carefully designed period of intense academic study in which students complete approximately 75 per cent of two courses – Learning Theory and Introduction to Research. The schedule of instruction and studying during the residency is structured to optimize the face-to-face access to instructors, develop networks with fellow students, and access the support services of the university if required. The typical daily schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Team meetings, homework, and readings are done outside of these hours.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered entirely online through innovative, easy to use Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. This varies from student to student and becomes easier as students familiarize themselves with Royal Roads University's distance learning technologies, and learn how to work effectively with team members in a virtual setting.
