The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies offers master’s degrees comprised of elements from other RRU programs, enabling us to provide an education shaped by your unique aspirations. Students benefit greatly from an individualized education that offers programs pursuant to their unique interests and schedules, while employers are attracted to candidates capable of meeting the specific demands of the professional world. That’s how everyone wins. That’s why Royal Roads graduate students are always in demand.

Our System

This graduate degree program is offered in 2 formats: online or a blended delivery that combines online coursework with one on-campus residency. And since we’re committed to providing individualized education, all of our students work closely with our program head to develop individual academic plans tailored to their specific needs. Drawing from two or more areas of study, this unique system enables Royal Roads graduate students to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study that combines personal passion and professional interest.

*This is not an independent studies or cohort model program. Courses are not self-paced and their start and end dates can vary.

Our Students

Royal Roads University draws more than just master’s students seeking an active role in the design of their educational experience. It also attracts driven, focused individuals who want more from their careers and who share a common desire to apply their education meaningfully throughout their organizations and communities. Most of our graduate students are already working professionals. That’s why we’re committed to providing a program that integrates professional experience with a practical education.

Commitment

Requiring 2 to 2.5 years of study, this degree program provides flexible scheduling options that combine online MA degree learning with one optional short term on-campus residency.

*Each online course can require up to 20 hours of study per week. Working professionals are encouraged to take this into consideration when developing a program of study in the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program.

Delivery Model

This unique program allows each student to work directly with faculty to create an individualized schedule of study that draws together courses of personal and professional interest from other masters and graduate certificate programs at Royal Roads University. Students select no more than 50 per cent of their courses from any one program to assure interdisciplinary breadth of study. Individuals may do one on-campus residency in another masters program, or they may complete their degree completely online.

Online Courses
Online courses are not independent studies courses; they have deadlines for assignments and, more importantly, require posting deadlines to foster the fruitful exchange of ideas that make virtual communities thrive. In building your schedule of study, working professionals should consider taking no more than one online course at a time as each course can require up to 20 hours of work per week.

On-Campus Residencies
Students who elect to do a residency work on two or three courses simultaneously in a blended model of delivery. Residencies begin with a pre-residency online, followed by two to three weeks of intensive on-campus coursework and subsequently, several weeks of post-residency work. While the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program recommends a residency in another masters program during the course of studies, residency options demand unimpeded time on-campus.

The MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program is driven by a student’s interdisciplinary research and career interests. A prospective student’s application needs to provide a rationale for the proposed combination of courses and academic fields of study.

Whereas most graduate interdisciplinary degrees draw from traditional, single disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology, ecology, etc.), Royal Roads’ MA in Interdisciplinary Studies program offers a unique take on interdisciplinarity. This program draws not from single disciplines but from multidisciplinary academic program areas (e.g., humanitarian studies, environmental education and communication, leadership, etc.); in addition, the program focuses on applied research instrumental to working professionals’ career goals.

Individualized Schedule of Study

There are three paths through the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies degree:
Coursework - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-30 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs

Major Project - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits in two required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-18 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs
-12 credits dedicated to a major project usually aligned with a student’s professional field

Thesis - A student completes 36 credit hours of on campus or online courses
-6 credits of required courses in interdisciplinary theory and methods
-18 credits accumulated by completing courses in MA or graduate certificate programs
-12 credits dedicated to a master’s thesis

Where needed, a student may take advantage of a directed study course to further familiarity with scholarship in a particular area of study.

Prospective students must contact the College of Interdisciplinary Studies to discuss development of their unique program schedules.

The MPA + MS Nursing Dual-Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Science (MS) in Nursing.

The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program takes advantage of the complementary foci of the two degree programs. Both programs have a clear commitment to preparing students to help their communities through advanced professional knowledge and skills. Accordingly, the dual degree emphasizes community health and professional management to prepare nurses to be effective administrators. The dual degree is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.
Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

All applicants must submit the following:

- Online graduate degree application and application fee
- Transcripts from each college/university you have attended
- Two letters of recommendation
- Personal statement (2-3 pages) describing your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee.
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
- Official GRE scores. GMAT scores may be submitted in lieu of GRE scores.

And, for international applicants:
- International Student Financial Statement form
- Official bank statement/proof of support
- Official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic scores

Applicants must also meet the following program-specific requirements:

MPA:
- Letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who know the applicant in a professional capacity, such as professors, work supervisors, and professionals from organizations where the applicant has served as a volunteer or in another capacity. When evaluating the letters of recommendation, the admissions committee looks for evidence of academic achievement, community involvement, and personal characteristics that suggests the applicant has the capacity to foster an institutional culture that advances democratic administration and governance.

- Personal statement
The personal statement should be no more than 500 words or two (2) double-spaced, typed pages and should answer the question,"Why do I want an MPA?" You may wish to describe your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in public administration, your career aspirations, your special interests within your field, and any unusual features of your background that might need explanation or be of interest to your program's admissions committee. In the personal statement, the committee assesses the student's commitment to public and/or nonprofit administration as well as his/her ability to communicate in writing.

- Significant work experience (5 or more years in the public and/or nonprofit sectors) can earn applicants a positive adjustment to their admissions scores. However, the lack of work experience does not result in a penalty.

MS Nursing:
- Undergraduate degree in nursing from a program which is accredited by a nursing accreditation organization
- Previous (successful completion of a) course in descriptive statistics
- A license to practice as a registered professional nurse
- Passing completion of the NCLEX examination (must be completed prior to the start of clinical courses)
- One year of full-time employment as a registered nurse is strongly encouraged (Candidates without one year of previous full-time employment may wish to consider enrolling in a part-time program while they acquire the needed work experience)

Now more than ever, we need to invite everyone in society, of all ages, to be part of the solution. The Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication program will empower you, and give you the depth and insight to lead and motivate others in developing a sustainable, environmentally sound society.

Who It’s For

The MA in Environmental Education and Communication is for those interested in how education and communication can help develop environmentally sustainable social and economic systems. Learning how we can educate and communicate to engage those in our workplaces, communities and nations towards such a goal involves all sectors of society– agriculture, health, governance, media, business, architecture, community development, science, education, recreation and more.

Students likely already know about the complexities of our current unsustainability and the challenges faced by environmental educators and communicators trying to address this problem. Our program is designed for those who wish to widen their perspective on environmental and related social issues, deepen their understanding of those areas essential to a skilled educator and/or communicator, explore different ways of understanding the causes of our current unsustainable society, and develop attributes essential to effective leadership.

Participants seek opportunities to learn with others from diverse backgrounds, to engage in core classes, co-operative projects, team planning, and group discussions to reach a better understanding of the language, expertise, and concerns of a wide range of education and communication professionals.

Students are typically professionals with bachelor's degrees and at least two years' experience working or interest in environmental education and communication.

Delivery Method

Combining the best of short residencies and innovative web-based instruction, the MA in Environmental Education and Communication program allows both busy working professionals and those just beginning their careers to get the most out of their academic experience. This combination of learning experiences allows students to benefit from the intensity of the program while still being able to meet the demands of family and workplace.

Participants in the MA program take 11 courses (41 credits) including the thesis course. Six courses are taken on-campus, and five are delivered at a distance through Internet-based technologies.

Certificate students take the first three courses in the schedule for a total of 9 credits. Diploma students take the first nine courses for a total of 24 credits.

We will utilize a range of educational methodologies, including case studies, field studies, cultural studies, team projects, lectures and seminar discussions, and online modules. RRU has become a leader in the delivery of web-based interactive distance education courses, and these will be of great value during non-residential periods.

Residency
Over two years, MA students attend two separate three-week residencies and one final two-week residency. The first residency introduces the cohort of students to each other, the faculty, and the RRU style of education as they participate in their first two courses. The middle residency incorporates two courses, may have a more directed field-based orientation, and helps prepare students for their thesis research. The final residency allows completing students to present their thesis findings to the larger environmental education and RRU community and incorporates their final courses, preparing them to be leaders in the field.

Students should expect to be fully occupied during the residency period. The regular classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with homework, readings, and team meetings done outside of these hours. There are activities during the regular workday and in the evenings. In addition to educational activities, there are a number of planned field trips and recreational events.

Online Courses
Online courses are delivered through the innovative use of internet technologies. Students draw on a range of learning resources, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to develop and complete the electronic submission of both individual and team assignments.

Students take one nine-week distance course at a time. Each distance course requires an average time commitment of 10 - 20 hours per week.

Program Laddering
The structure of the program is laddered so that individuals are able to complete a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, or full Master's degree.

-The Graduate Certificate program was designed to be taken on its own, or to ladder into the Diploma or Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication. The Certificate would be awarded upon successful completion of a residency and one distance-based semester (approximately five months). Students may apply for transfer to the Diploma or MA stream during the Graduate Certificate program, or apply to the Diploma or MA program once they have completed the Certificate

Students may apply for transfer to the MA stream during the Graduate Diploma program, or apply to the MA program once they have completed the Diploma
-The full two-year program leading to the MA is delivered through a combination of three residential periods, three distance-based semesters, and a thesis

Delivery Model

The Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology is delivered as a blended program (incorporating online learning with an on-campus residency), as well as a purely online model.

Pre-Residency
Students begin the Graduate Diploma in Learning and Technology program with a very short online pre-residency session that introduces them to the instructor, familiarizes them with the course content and materials, and connects them with other students in the program. This blended learning format allows students to benefit from the synergy of on-campus learning and direct interaction with leading faculty members, while still meeting the demands of career and lifestyle. The result is accessible, high quality learning with minimal professional disruption.

Residency
The 10-day residency is a carefully designed period of intense academic study in which students complete approximately 75 per cent of two courses – Learning Theory and Introduction to Research. The schedule of instruction and studying during the residency is structured to optimize the face-to-face access to instructors, develop networks with fellow students, and access the support services of the university if required. The typical daily schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Team meetings, homework, and readings are done outside of these hours.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered entirely online through innovative, easy to use Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences.

Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. This varies from student to student and becomes easier as students familiarize themselves with Royal Roads University's distance learning technologies, and learn how to work effectively with team members in a virtual setting.

OVERVIEW

Digital has changed the game for sports business forever. Teams, leagues and federations no longer compete with each other; the new competitors are digitally-based activities such as social media, video streaming and gaming. Some analysts have even observed sport to be the most disrupted of all industries.

Digital is more about aligning strategy and the organization to behaviours and expectations of modern fans than it is about technology.

Ultimately, digital is about growth and therefore 'Managing Digital Transformation in Sports' has been purposely developed for football and sport organisations to explain the digital challenge to sports leaders, managers and professionals in a way that will enable organization and career growth.

It is a modern reality that whilst business models in sports are still adjusting to the new data and fan-first reality of the digital era, a new breed of technologies such as virtual and augmented reality have arrived to push the economy further into competition for personalized and immersive experiences.

Through all of this volatility, the principles that are needed to navigate digital disruption in our own roles and organizations are now understood. The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Education and Communication program is for those interested in how education and communication can help develop environmentally sustainable social and economic systems.

Outcomes

Graduates will return to their career with a range of theoretical knowledge and analytical and communications skills and competencies. Graduates have the skills and knowledge to develop and implement innovative programs to provide students, clients and other audiences with science-based information, psychologically-sound strategies, and culturally-appropriate, philosophically-nuanced and educationally-sophisticated approaches to current environmental issues.

Delivery Model

The Environmental Education and Communication program combines the best of short residencies and innovative web-based instruction to allow both busy mid-career professionals and those just beginning their careers to get the most out of their academic experience. This combination of learning experiences gives students a beneficial on-campus experience while still being able to meet the demands of family and workplace.

The first residency introduces the cohort of students to each other, the faculty, and the Royal Roads University style of education. The second residency diploma may have a more directed field-based orientation.

Participants in the Graduate Diploma in Environmental Education and Communication program take nine courses.

A range of educational methodologies are utilized including case studies, field studies, cultural studies, team projects, lectures and seminar discussions, and online modules.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered through the innovative use of Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Normally, students take one distance course at a time, for a period of 10 - 12 weeks. Each distance course requires an average time commitment of 10 - 20 hours per week.

Residency
Students should expect to work hard during the residency period. The normal classroom schedule is Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Homework, readings, and team meetings are done outside these hours. There are some activities in the evenings, as well as during the normal workday. In addition to the educational activities, there are a number of planned recreational events.

Advanced Standing
Students may apply for transfer to the MA in Environmental Education and Communication during the Graduate Diploma program, or apply to the MA program once they have completed the Diploma. The Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of two residencies and one distance-based semester (approximately 12 months). Academic credit earned through the completion of one credential (e.g. certificate or diploma) accepted towards the completion of another credential (e.g. diploma or degree) within the same program area. Laddering agreements must be approved by Academic Council. Laddering agreements enable students to build upon previously earned credentials hence the content must be identical (e.g. course completed in a certificate program must contain the same content as those in the degree program). Students who are only registered in a degree program do not receive multiple credentials (e.g. certificate and degree). Students registered in a degree program must apply to the Dean should they wish to transfer to a certificate or diploma program. Similarly, students registered in a certificate or diploma program eligible for laddering must apply and be accepted into the higher level program.

Sponsors
In general, students have secured the necessary approvals to enter the program from their employer. Many employers will therefore be the sponsor and will, through the creation of a Learning Agreement, provide the student with the support and mentorship necessary to complete the program. However, a sponsor is not mandatory.

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Online), also known as Professional Legal Training (PLT), is the link between a student's law degree and becoming a practising lawyer. The PLT program is a coursework degree that provides structured and supervised legal training, based on the Competency Standards for entry level lawyers developed by the admitting authorities and the Australian Professional Legal Education Council (APLEC). The online program can be undertaken full-time or part-time, and consists of the following three components: -Practical Legal Training: 1 semester (full-time) or 2 semesters (part-time); -Practical Experience (75 days); and -Continuing Practical Training (75 hours, undertaken concurrently with Practical Experience component).

Professional outcomes

Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice will enable you to apply for admission to legal practice in Australia (except South Australia and Northern Territory). Students should contact the relevant admitting authority to ascertain the requirements for admission in specific States or Territories.

Structure and subjects

The Professional Legal Training online program has three components:

1. Practical legal training component

This component is delivered online over one semester (full-time) or two semesters (part-time).

Practical Legal Training concentrates on the development of ‘lawyering’ skills such as legal research, analysis and problem solving, legal writing and drafting, interviewing and oral communication, advising, advocacy, dispute resolution and professional ethics and conduct.

Online PLT students will be expected to attend Bond University for one learning intensive for one week near the beginning of the Practical Legal Training component.

2. Practical experience component

Students are required to complete 75 days of work experience in an approved law office in Australia.  If you are studying online full time, you may undertake your practical experience either before or after, but not concurrently with, the Practical Legal Training component. If you are studying online part time, you may undertake the practical experience before, after or concurrently with the Practical Legal Training component.  The work experience can be undertaken in more than one law office and can be completed prior to or after the Practical Training component. Our law Graduate Placement Manager can assist students in obtaining a placement.

3. Continuing practical training component

This provides students with a further 75 hours of training relevant to the Practical Experience component and is completed online. It is undertaken concurrently with the Practical Experience component.

Teaching approach

Bond Law’s unique personalised approach to teaching allows online students to benefit from one-on-one access to experienced practising legal professionals, PLT legal academics and acknowledged industry experts.
