IDOH (Infectious Diseases and One Health) is a partnership of some of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and the "one health" concept. The three founding partners are Université de Tours, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Edinburgh.
Infectious diseases represent a major threat to public health. Fighting emerging, or re-emerging, infections requires that both animal and human health be treated as "One Health". This will enhance biomedical research discoveries, to the great benefit of both humans and animals.
The objective of the programme is to provide students from all over the world with education in One Health concepts, host pathogen interactions, immunology, zoonotic and emerging infections, translational animal models and management of infectious diseases.
This programme will allow students to study at three of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and complete an internships at one of the three academic partners or any of 35 associated partners (academic and industrial) located worldwide.
The programme will take place over two academic years and students will spend a semester at each of the three academic partners before completing a fourth semester as an internship either at one of the academic partners or one of the 35 associated partners (academic and industrial) located worldwide.

There is also a week long summer school between semesters 2 and 3 focused on generic transferable skills.
The programme will provide core competencies in skills identified as being required by industry and academia. Therefore, the purpose of this programme is to:
Throughout the programme, lectures, tutorials, interactive sessions, the “flipped classroom” approach and practicals will be the main teaching format, with the balance varying depending on the partner institution. The small class size allows for extensive participation and interaction among students and between students and academics.
Assessment items reflect the practice of science and are integrated into the course, for example with students presenting the results of a literature review to the class (peer teaching). Concepts from lectures are developed in laboratory sessions and through assessment items. Students are encouraged to question the validity of information provided and critically appraise information sourced through the literature and other resources.
Independent learning is encouraged throughout the programme, particularly during the research project, but also during preparation of assessment items and classroom work. Group work and cooperation is encouraged and enhances the learning process. Formal class contact is supported by regular meetings with course organisers and tutors. A feature of the University of Edinburgh component of the programme is the intensive hands on approach to learning. Students will participate in a wide range of laboratory activities both at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and the Roslin Institute.
On completion of the degree, graduates will have a wide range of skills in the area of infectious disease biology, interactions between disease, environment and host, modern animal science and laboratory techniques.
You will also have obtained valuable generic skills in producing and presenting scientific material, communicating with people from a wide range of geographies and cultures and hypothesis development and testing. This will give you a unique background for progressing to further study (PhD or professional qualifications) or going straight into employment.
You could work in developing countries where the burden of infectious disease on both humans and livestock is significant, and thus will help improve food sustainability and the transition from poverty in these countries. In developed countries infectious diseases also cause major losses in productivity of humans and animals, and this will increase as globalisation increases. Depending on your initial background (medical, veterinary, scientific, therapeutic) graduates will find employment that exploits their new knowledge to reduce the impact of infectious disease
One Health is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the complex interactions between human health, animal health and ecosystem health. Its original emergence was largely driven by the threat of global pandemics of disease, in particular highly pathogenic avian influenza and SARS. There was a recognition that the complex health challenges faced in the 21st century required a new interdisciplinary approach that included both the natural and social sciences.
Launched in 2014, this programme utilises the many strengths of the University of Edinburgh across multiple disciplines to provide the key training and skills required for a successful career in this emerging field.

Year 1: Courses for the Certificate

Year 2: Courses for the Diploma
For the diploma a selection of courses totalling 60 credits must be made from the following courses. Each 20-credit course is taught over a period of ten weeks, whilst the 10-credit courses are taught over a five-week period.
Please note that although all courses are offered, we cannot guarantee that places will be available on all elective courses to all students, each year (it will be at the discretion of the Programme Director to assign places on courses and this will depend on demand).
Year 3: Completion of the MSc programme in One Health
The written reflective element is an assignment of 10-15,000 words (60 credits). This may take the form of one of the following:
Students will be required to submit a proposal that demonstrates an appropriate level of critical analysis, academic knowledge and reflection, or one health practice depending on the choice made, prior to being admitted to the masters year. The University of Edinburgh’s common marking scheme will be applied.
Postgraduate Professional Development
Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.
You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.
A qualification from our programme will enhance your career prospects in academia, research, government departments, non-governmental organisations, international development and the private sector.
Despite being a relatively new field, One Health is rapidly gaining global recognition and current students have already reported improvements in career development through studying on the programme.
Mamaself is a two year European Master program in Materials science, a program of excellence build in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program. One specific aim of the Mamaself program is to teach the application of "Large scale facilities" for the characterisation and development of materials.
Modern life and globalisation imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterisation of these materials and also the optimising of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at "Large scale facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.
The Master Mamaself’s objective is to train in a very multidisciplinary and international approach high-level students who will manage perfectly the scientific and technological aspects of the elaboration, the implementation, the control and the follow-up of materials, capable of fitting into the industrial environment as well as continuing with a PhD.

The partners have a large background in materials science and a long collaboration with Large Scale Facilities. They are located in culturally and historically rich European towns. Through full integration of teaching and research, the consortium universities have managed to bring together different specializations in a unique course programme.
The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in higher education. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries.
The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, enabling students from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European higher education institutions, as well as encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.
The program is organized as a pedagogic continuum:
The course begins in September (semester 1) of each year, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and a work-based research project
Students can start Year 1 of their studies at any of the five partner universities. Semester 3 is offered at one the other 4 partner universities, while semester 4 can be undertaken in industry, at one of the consortium universities, at LSF or at any of the partner universities.
In each semester, students take 30 ECTS credits.
The duration of the Mamaself Masters course is two years (120 ECTS credits). The academic program is split into two years with 60 ECTS credits for each. The language of instruction and examination is English. The student will stay one year in one institution and a second second in another institution. In respect of the Erasmus Mundus mobility rules, students must change country between Yea 1 and Year 2. It is not possible to stay the two years at the same site in Munich. It is possible to go back to one of the two first institutions for the 4th semester.
The first year consists of lectures and practicals at one out of the five universities yielding 60 ECTS. This part of teaching will take place at one of the 5 leading European universities belonging to the consortium.
At the end of the first year, student must change country and join a second institution.
Students will receive at least 2 European Master diploma , one for each institution.
The second academic year will start with a summer school of two weeks, where both lectures and practicals (comprehensively corresponding to 7 ECTS) will offer an excellent introduction into the use of “Large Scale Facilities”. The core of the lectures will all be given by the scientists responsible of the Master in each of the four universities (W. Paulus, P. Rabiller, W. Petry and W. Schmahl, C. Lamberti), exhibiting a huge background in this area. Each year the core lectures will be supported by specific seminars given by other university colleagues and by researchers directly coming from national or European Large Scale Facilities centers.
During these two weeks, the topic of the Master thesis will be chosen by the student out of a list of subjects proposed by the staff of the institutions.
During the first semester of the second year each student has to shift to one out of the four other universities. The first semester consists in lectures and practicals (30 ects, cf programme in each university of the consortium). During the second semester of the second year the student has to undergo the Master thesis work which will also yield 30 ECTS. The thesis work will take six months and is generally in strong relation with the use of ”Large Scale Facilities” for applied or academic research problem.
The research topic can be supervised and located at large Scale Facilities, but will then be jointly supervised by an advisor of one of the consortium institutions. The research work is finalised by a written dissertation, wich must be defended in front of a comittee.
Students may undergo their master thesis at another partner institution in Japan (Kyoto University, Tokyo Institite of Technology) Switzerland (PSI / ETH Zurich) or India (IIT Madras), Univeristy Cornell (USA), University of Connecticut (USA).

Our Double Masters in Asian & European Affairs MA will give you an in-depth knowledge of the politics, economics and society of Asia and Europe. You will study at two world-leading institutions: Renmin University of China, where you will benefit from its expertise on China and Asia; and King’s College London, where you will benefit from our expertise in European affairs. Together we will provide you with the knowledge to critically understand and assess Asian, European and global politics.
The EU is the largest economic block in the world and Asia is the fastest-growing region. This course will equip you with sufficient knowledge about the two regions to work in either of them or in international institutions. You will have the opportunity to study and understand a variety of political, economic and societal topics and to gain specialised knowledge on two topics of your choice and develop advanced research skills through two research dissertations – one for Renmin University of China and one for King’s.
Renmin University of China (RUC) is a leading research university focusing on humanities and social sciences. Its scope covers natural sciences, information technology and environmental sciences. According to the China Ministry of Education, Renmin is ranked first for the study of political science, public administration, economics, law, statistics, business administration and sociology. The School of International Studies (SIS) is one of the earliest institutes to engage in the teaching and research of political science and international affairs. Because of this, the school has established strong academic traditions and accumulated invaluable historical experience, making it a leading and influential teaching and research base in the fields of political science and international studies in China.
King’s is one of the top universities in the world, as well as one of the most recognised institutions for the study of politics, political economy and international relations. Our Department benefits from links to other departments via the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Law and Governance, making us an excellent place to study contemporary European affairs.
Offers postgraduate-level education in Asian and European affairs. Provides students with the opportunity to study and understand a variety of political, economic and societal topics and to gain specialised knowledge on two topics of their choice through the completion of two research dissertations (one for Renmin University of China, the other for King's).
You will have regular contact with our staff, who are world-leading experts in their fields, through lectures, seminars and supervision.
In year 1, students are expected to successfully complete 28 RUC credits. In year 2, students will have six hours per week of teaching during term time as well as 34 hours of self-study per week.
For Renmin University of China, one credit equates to 16 class hours.
Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work at King’s.
You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations and may typically expect assessment by: 50% examination and 50% coursework in year 1, and 100% coursework in year 2.
Year 2: The majority of European and International Studies modules are assessed by a 4,000-word essay; other optional modules may differ. The dissertation module is assessed by a 10,000 word essay.
The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect.
Students undertaking this course would be ideally placed to work in the public sector, in government and international organisations, particularly in departments working on European and/or Asian issues. Graduates would be well placed to gain roles in journalism, consultancy and think tanks in the private sector.
