Our unique, combined academic English and masters course is for non-native speakers of English, including students from the European Union (EU) as well as international students. On this two-year course you will improve the academic and language skills you need for a masters, enhancing your ability to research, reference correctly and avoid plagiarism.

Class time: Minimum of 13 hours per week of Academic English and subject specific modules in Year 1 plus personal tutorials and an approximately equal amount of self-study. Year 2 class time depends on the masters chosen.

Teaching Materials: The cost of teaching materials varies per module but will not exceed £20 for any one module. Many of the materials are available for loan free-of-charge from the University library.

Please note: Your class timetable will be provided at induction. All classes take place from Monday to Friday.

Class size: Maximum 20 students for English Classes.

Teaching dates:

Semester 1 teaching is from 28 September 2015 to 18 December 2015. There will be no teaching during the Christmas holiday period of 21 December 2015 to 8 January 2016. The semester 1 assessment and exam period is from 11 January 2016 to 22 January 2016.

Semester 2 teaching is from 1 February 2016 to 18 March 2016 and 4 April 2016 to 6 May 2016. There will be no teaching during the Easter holiday period of 21 March 2016 to to April 2016. The semester 2 assessment and exam period is from 9 May 2016 to 20 May 2016.

You will also gain a cultural awareness of the university environment in the UK and get the most from your masters course as you develop your academic reading and writing skills, as well as your spoken skills allowing you to present and discuss your research.

International students will need only one visa for this two-yearcourse. In year one, in addition to English, you will also study modules in the faculty of your chosen masters. In year two, you will study the masters course of your choice.

Year One Core Modules

Research Skills
You will develop your ability to conduct research in English. This includes learning how to find information from online and written sources, making effective notes, planning your assignments, using both in-text and bibliographic references correctly, writing in your own words, and avoiding plagiarism

Language Studies
This module supports the Research Skills module and is essential to that module. Skills you will develop include academic writing and an awareness of context and argument. You will also study a range of language structures and vocabulary that you will need to support your studies

Cultural Skills
You will develop your awareness of British culture, especially in relation to university life and student culture. You will study areas such as: student contemporary language, stereotypes and perceptions of the UK, the UK education system and the role of English as an international language.

Independent Study
During the second semester of Year 1, you will research and write a project linked to your area of Masters study. You will engage in primary and secondary research and be supported throughout by a personal supervisor who will be assigned to you.

You will also study 2 modules from the receiving Faculty where you will eventually study your masters in Year two of the course. You will study these modules in preparation for your masters and will be in the same lectures and tutorials as British students.

IDOH (Infectious Diseases and One Health) is a partnership of some of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and the "one health" concept. Read more

IDOH (Infectious Diseases and One Health) is a partnership of some of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and the "one health" concept. The three founding partners are Université de Tours, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Edinburgh.

Infectious diseases represent a major threat to public health. Fighting emerging, or re-emerging, infections requires that both animal and human health be treated as "One Health". This will enhance biomedical research discoveries, to the great benefit of both humans and animals.

The objective of the programme is to provide students from all over the world with education in One Health concepts, host pathogen interactions, immunology, zoonotic and emerging infections, translational animal models and management of infectious diseases.

This programme will allow students to study at three of Europe's leading research-intensive universities in the field of infectious diseases and complete an internships at one of the three academic partners or any of 35 associated partners (academic and industrial) located worldwide.

Learning outcomes

The programme will provide core competencies in skills identified as being required by industry and academia. Therefore, the purpose of this programme is to:

  • Provide students with a detailed knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases, immunology and modes of transmission.
  • Provide students with practical experience in a range of animal science techniques.
  • Develop an increased understanding and awareness of the application of scientific principles to the study of infectious and non-infectious causes of disease in animals and humans.

  • Establish the ability to utilise effective and modern methods for interpreting, analysing and describing scientific data.

Throughout the programme, lectures, tutorials, interactive sessions, the “flipped classroom” approach and practicals will be the main teaching format, with the balance varying depending on the partner institution. The small class size allows for extensive participation and interaction among students and between students and academics.

Assessment items reflect the practice of science and are integrated into the course, for example with students presenting the results of a literature review to the class (peer teaching). Concepts from lectures are developed in laboratory sessions and through assessment items. Students are encouraged to question the validity of information provided and critically appraise information sourced through the literature and other resources.

Independent learning is encouraged throughout the programme, particularly during the research project, but also during preparation of assessment items and classroom work. Group work and cooperation is encouraged and enhances the learning process. Formal class contact is supported by regular meetings with course organisers and tutors. A feature of the University of Edinburgh component of the programme is the intensive hands on approach to learning. Students will participate in a wide range of laboratory activities both at The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and the Roslin Institute.

Career opportunities

On completion of the degree, graduates will have a wide range of skills in the area of infectious disease biology, interactions between disease, environment and host, modern animal science and laboratory techniques.

You will also have obtained valuable generic skills in producing and presenting scientific material, communicating with people from a wide range of geographies and cultures and hypothesis development and testing. This will give you a unique background for progressing to further study (PhD or professional qualifications) or going straight into employment.

You could work in developing countries where the burden of infectious disease on both humans and livestock is significant, and thus will help improve food sustainability and the transition from poverty in these countries. In developed countries infectious diseases also cause major losses in productivity of humans and animals, and this will increase as globalisation increases. Depending on your initial background (medical, veterinary, scientific, therapeutic) graduates will find employment that exploits their new knowledge to reduce the impact of infectious disease

The Masters in Nursing (MN) enables you to achieve a post-graduate qualification and professional registration. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Programme structure

We place emphasis upon community building and creating a sense of presence within the online learning environment using a range of educational technology tools, such as asynchronous and synchronous discussions, virtual classrooms, wikis, interactive quizzes, audio and video resources, to create a sense of students being at and part of the University

The first year of study will explore the One Health framework and examine the value thereof, and provide foundations in epidemiology. Its original emergence was largely driven by the threat of global pandemics of disease, in particular highly pathogenic avian influenza and SARS. There was a recognition that the complex health challenges faced in the 21st century required a new interdisciplinary approach that included both the natural and social sciences.

Year 3: Completion of the MSc programme in One Health

The written reflective element is an assignment of 10-15,000 words (60 credits). This may take the form of one of the following:

  • a written dissertation
  • a casebook (relating to relevant professional experience)
  • a personal portfolio of reflective and practical activity
  • a research project

Students will be required to submit a proposal that demonstrates an appropriate level of critical analysis, academic knowledge and reflection, or one health practice depending on the choice made, prior to being admitted to the masters year. The University of Edinburgh’s common marking scheme will be applied.

Postgraduate Professional Development

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

A master of excellence

Mamaself is a two year European Master program in Materials science, a program of excellence build in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program. One specific aim of the Mamaself program is to teach the application of "Large scale facilities" for the characterisation and development of materials.

Modern life and globalisation imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterisation of these materials and also the optimising of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at "Large scale facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.

The Master Mamaself’s objective is to train in a very multidisciplinary and international approach high-level students who will manage perfectly the scientific and technological aspects of the elaboration, the implementation, the control and the follow-up of materials, capable of fitting into the industrial environment as well as continuing with a PhD.

A consortium of five universities

The Mamaself Consortium includes 5 primary European Universities in the field of Materials sciences, Engineering Physics, Chemistry :

The partners have a large background in materials science and a long collaboration with Large Scale Facilities. They are located in culturally and historically rich European towns. Through full integration of teaching and research, the consortium universities have managed to bring together different specializations in a unique course programme.

Erasmus Mundus programme

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in higher education. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries. 

The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, enabling students from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European higher education institutions, as well as encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.

Structure of the program

The program is organized as a pedagogic continuum:

The course begins in September (semester 1) of each year, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and a work-based research project

Students can start Year 1 of their studies at any of the five partner universities. Semester 3 is offered at one the other 4 partner universities, while semester 4 can be undertaken in industry, at one of the consortium universities, at LSF or at any of the partner universities. 

In each semester, students take 30 ECTS credits.

The duration of the Mamaself Masters course is two years (120 ECTS credits). The academic program is split into two years with 60 ECTS credits for each. The language of instruction and examination is English. The student will stay one year in one institution and a second second in another institution. In respect of the Erasmus Mundus mobility rules, students must change country between Yea 1 and Year 2. It is not possible to stay the two years at the same site in Munich. It is possible to go back to one of the two first institutions for the 4th semester.

Year 1

The first year consists of lectures and practicals at one out of the five universities yielding 60 ECTS. This part of teaching will take place at one of the 5 leading European universities belonging to the consortium.

At the end of the first year, student must change country and join a second institution.

Students will receive at least 2 European Master diploma , one for each institution.

Year 2

  • Summerschool

The second academic year will start with a summer school of two weeks, where both lectures and practicals (comprehensively corresponding to 7 ECTS) will offer an excellent introduction into the use of “Large Scale Facilities”. The core of the lectures will all be given by the scientists responsible of the Master in each of the four universities (W. Paulus, P. Rabiller, W. Petry and W. Schmahl, C. Lamberti), exhibiting a huge background in this area. Each year the core lectures will be supported by specific seminars given by other university colleagues and by researchers directly coming from national or European Large Scale Facilities centers.

During these two weeks, the topic of the Master thesis will be chosen by the student out of a list of subjects proposed by the staff of the institutions.

  • Year 2

During the first semester of the second year each student has to shift to one out of the four other universities. The first semester consists in lectures and practicals (30 ects, cf programme in each university of the consortium). During the second semester of the second year the student has to undergo the Master thesis work which will also yield 30 ECTS. The thesis work will take six months and is generally in strong relation with the use of ”Large Scale Facilities” for applied or academic research problem.

The research topic can be supervised and located at large Scale Facilities, but will then be jointly supervised by an advisor of one of the consortium institutions. The research work is finalised by a written dissertation, wich must be defended in front of a comittee.

Students may undergo their master thesis at another partner institution in Japan (Kyoto University, Tokyo Institite of Technology) Switzerland (PSI / ETH Zurich) or India (IIT Madras), Univeristy Cornell (USA), University of Connecticut (USA).

The Department of Computer Science at Aberystwyth has a strong research focus on techniques and applications of intelligent systems, working with many major companies. Our taught Masters degrees draw on this focus, and link to the expertise and interests of the Department. They are designed to meet the needs of both students wanting a foundation for a career in research, and those wanting to expand on their skills to accelerate their industrial career.

Contemporary software is frequently developed to function in distributed systems. Applications are deployed across multiple computers, interacting to provide services and to solve problems in a distributed way. This Masters course is suitable for students intending to pursue a career in the software industry, and is a qualifying Masters Degree for Chartered Engineer status. It can also lead to a career in research.

The course in Software Engineering is a two year full-time programme. This degree is the same as the one year MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) - G493, with the addition that the student spends a year working in industry after the taught part of the course.

Year one of the course is divided into two parts over three semesters. Approximately 12 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies, course work and formal examinations. The subsequent successful submission of your research dissertation leads to the award of an MSc.

Industrial Year

This degree is the same as the one year MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering), with the addition that the student spends a year working in industry after the taught part of the course.

• Students study at Aberystwyth University from September to May, and are supported in applying for suitable jobs in the software
industry.
• They work in the UK from June to the following May.
• They return to Aberystwyth to complete their dissertation from June to September

The work in industry is paid employment, not just work experience. Typical annual salaries for an industrial year are between £11,000 and £15,000.

Students wishing to do the industrial year are assisted in finding a place in industry. There is assistance with preparing an appropriate CV, training in what to expect at an interview, and practice in being interviewed by experienced industry interviewers. The Department of Computer Science sends about 70 students each year for a year's experience in industry, and has many contacts in companies enthusiastic to take good students from Aberystwyth University.

As these are paid jobs for companies, we cannot guarantee any student a job - the companies select the employees they want. Students that are unable to find a job can complete the Masters degree without an industrial year.

There is an additional but much reduced fee for the year in industry (presently £800 for the year), and members of staff stay in touch electronically and by visiting students during the year.

The Cambridge MCL is a one-year taught masters programme commencing at the beginning of October each year and ending in June of the following year. It is designed for students wanting to pursue further legal studies after completing their first degree in law, both those intending to practise in the area of corporate law and those considering an academic career. The MCL has been structured so as to combine academic rigour with a diverse and flexible curriculum, enabling each student to tailor their MCL course selection to their own specific requirements.

MCL students take a combination of full-year and one-term modules during the course. All students take the compulsory full-year Deals course, which focuses on the legal and economic structuring of corporate transactions. They also choose one full-year LLM paper from a selection of corporate papers, including Corporate Finance and Corporate Governance. In conjunction with the full-year papers, students take four one- term modules, usually two in the Michaelmas Term and two in the Lent Term. The modules enable students to conduct a more detailed study of certain specialist areas of corporate law, such as shareholder litigation and international merger control.

Course detail

MCL students are expected upon arrival to be familiar with corporate law and to be motivated to develop their expertise in this challenging area. Students who take the MCL should leave with a much enriched understanding of the topic. They will learn about areas of corporate law with which they were not previously familiar, will have an opportunity to reflect upon the theoretical and policy implications of the topic and will be challenged to think about the practical aspects of the subject in an academically rigorous manner.

Format

MCL students take the compulsory full-year Deals course and a full-year LLM paper from a selection of corporate papers. In addition they take four one-term MCL-specific modules from a selection of six on offer, usually two in the first term and two in the second term of the course.

Given that MCL enrolment is limited to 25 students, class sizes for the modules and the Deals course are small enough to mean seminar-style teaching occurs in classes formally organised as lectures.

MCL students receive one two-hour formal lecture per week for each of their four termly modules, for the full-year Deals course and for their full-year LLM course.

MCL students receive small group teaching for their full-year LLM paper alongside the LLM students taking the same paper if numbers are sufficiently large.

MCL students are entitled to submit up to three pieces of practice written work for the full-year LLM paper they take. This work might take the form of reflective essays or timed exam-practice essays. Course convenors and lecturers can advise on topics, but the aim is to produce a short piece of writing which provides a concise, rigorous argument or analysis of the issues in question. Students then benefit from specific and individual feedback, and can thereby hone their legal writing skills.

Assessment

- Students write three assignments during the MCL year as the formal assessment for the Deals course.

- A two-hour examination is required for each of their four termly modules, and a three-hour examination for their one full-year LLM course.

Continuing

A number of students wish to remain in Cambridge after completing their Masters degree in order to pursue further advanced legal studies, either by undertaking research for the Diploma in International Law, the Diploma in Legal Studies, the MLitt degree or the PhD degree.

Students wishing to continue their studies at Cambridge by undertaking a research degree in law should apply for their chosen course through the Graduate Admissions Office by completing a GRADSAF application form and submitting it by the relevant deadline.

Subject to performance pre-requisites, at the end of the first year you will progress to the 1-year MSc in Economics, or on to other related MSc programmes of your choice.

The course will provide you with rigorous training in the analysis of economics, including quantitative techniques and research methods. On completion of this degree you will be equipped with the tools of the professional economist and ready for your chosen career path, whether in government, the private and financial services sectors or further research in Economics.

In the first year you will study undergraduate level courses in three core areas: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Quantitative Methods. You will also select either one or two (depending on their credit value) optional courses from a wide range on offer. In the second year, subject to progression, you will study at Masters level.

You will be taught by a top-ranking Department of Economics with expertise in a wide set of areas and who produce world leading research.

With an intake of only 10 places you will benefit from a strong sense of group identity and enjoy close contact with the academic staff of the Department. Course content and structure

The duration of the course is 2 years. In year one you will study for 9 months (September to May) and start year two in in the following September. Year two begins with a compulsory two week mathematics refresher course prior to lectures and seminars starting. The dissertation is written over the summer.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- advanced training in the principles of economics and their application appropriate to postgraduate level

- developed the ability to apply the advanced knowledge, research methods and skills they have acquired to the solution of theoretical and/or applied problems in economic policy

- the ability to evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in the discipline

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework, examinations and a dissertation.

The EU is the largest economic block in the world and Asia is the fastest-growing region. This course will equip you with sufficient knowledge about the two regions to work in either of them or in international institutions. You will have the opportunity to study and understand a variety of political, economic and societal topics and to gain specialised knowledge on two topics of your choice and develop advanced research skills through two research dissertations – one for Renmin University of China and one for King’s.

Renmin University of China (RUC) is a leading research university focusing on humanities and social sciences. Its scope covers natural sciences, information technology and environmental sciences. According to the China Ministry of Education, Renmin is ranked first for the study of political science, public administration, economics, law, statistics, business administration and sociology. The School of International Studies (SIS) is one of the earliest institutes to engage in the teaching and research of political science and international affairs. Because of this, the school has established strong academic traditions and accumulated invaluable historical experience, making it a leading and influential teaching and research base in the fields of political science and international studies in China.

King’s is one of the top universities in the world, as well as one of the most recognised institutions for the study of politics, political economy and international relations. Our Department benefits from links to other departments via the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in Law and Governance, making us an excellent place to study contemporary European affairs.

Teaching

You will have regular contact with our staff, who are world-leading experts in their fields, through lectures, seminars and supervision.

In year 1, students are expected to successfully complete 28 RUC credits. In year 2, students will have six hours per week of teaching during term time as well as 34 hours of self-study per week.

For Renmin University of China, one credit equates to 16 class hours.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work at King’s.

Assessment

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations and may typically expect assessment by: 50% examination and 50% coursework in year 1, and 100% coursework in year 2.

Year 2: The majority of European and International Studies modules are assessed by a 4,000-word essay; other optional modules may differ. The dissertation module is assessed by a 10,000 word essay.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect.

Career prospects

Students undertaking this course would be ideally placed to work in the public sector, in government and international organisations, particularly in departments working on European and/or Asian issues. This one-year Master’s programme is aimed at graduates from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and city planning who are specifically concerned with design issues of the public realm and the effects these have on social life and human behaviour. Our focus is to deepen theoretical and design knowledge, changing the mindset of professionals regarding the importance and value of the public realm in the design of our cities.

The rationale behind Urbanism Studies is for professionals to understand and work in interdisciplinary design and planning teams, coupled with the growing desire for cities to establish different, new forms of urban living. As the goal of this programme is to move design thinking from objects to places, our core Urban Studios differ from traditional studios in several ways.

Our approach involves in-depth explorations of urban design issues by combining five topic-based modules situated within the three studio courses. Ongoing seminar reading series and urban film studies are included in the studios. The integrated final project builds upon the previous three studios, leading to a thesis portfolio that reflects the main achievements and thinking of each student as an outcome and product of their intense, focused learning throughout the year.
