Petroleum Geoscience Centre: The Petroleum Geoscience Centre at the University of Manchester combines postgraduate MSc and PhD training, industry professional development programmes and internationally renowned research within one of the leading Earth Science Schools in the UK. World-Class Infrastructure: Manchester University has world-class research and teaching facilities, including geochemical, sedimentological and geophysical laboratories. The Petroleum Geoscience Centre runs three workstation laboratories: two are dedicated research environments using clusters of Unix workstations, and Linux/Windows PCs running the Schlumberger GeoFrame suite, Paradigm VoxelGeo, Petrel, Kingdom Suite, GoCad, ER Mapper and Arc-Info, plus various well-log analysis packages. The third is a dedicated new teaching facility comprising a 12-workstation suite. Immersive visualization for research and training is provided at the Manchester Centre.

Established Petroleum Geoscience MSc: The course has strong links with international oil companies and a proven track record for training in exploration and production geoscience to meet the needs of the oil industry. The course combines and emphasis on academic excellence with industrial application. Students are expected to meet rigorous academic standards and to develop key analytical expertise. Taught courses from October to April comprise lectures, practical exercises, tutorials, group projects. From May to September students specialise whilst undertaking an independant research project, often carried out within the offices of a sponsoring oil company, providing valuable work experience. Fieldwork is also an important part of the course. Three field trips are taken within the UK and one overseas field trip each year.

Careers: Graduates from this programme tend to follow career paths in the petroleum sector; with major international oil companies, service companies or the growing number of consultancies, government institutions or into the financial sector. Others have continued their studies with PhD training.

Entry Requirements: A good Honours degree in Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering or related discipline. Work experience may also be taken into account. Overseas students would also need to demonstrate competence in English language, for example, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.

The programme is a collaboration between the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and a range of Scottish Universities, including the University of Aberdeen (lead), Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde University, University of St Andrews, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of the Highlands and Islands and Robert Gordon University to develop new technologies in exploration, production and decommissioning.

During the course of your degree you are required to attend a 10 day leadership week which takes place in the last week of May in your second year.

Each distance learning module will be assessed by at least two methods: EITHER

Written examination and research paper (most modules are assessed in this way). The exam and research paper are each worth 50% of your total mark.

Written examination and case studies. The exam is worth either 60% or 70% and the case studies are worth either 40% or 30% of your total mark respectively.

a dissertation of up to 15,000 words on a topic approved by an academic supervisor, or
