Format

Throughout the course, content is complemented by practical work, allowing you to support your theoretical development by providing real-life simulation. The course will include industry sessions with Oil and Gas companies and IT suppliers.

You will work on a group project designed to simulate the working environment, allowing you to collaborate with colleagues as you would within multi-discipline teams in the Energy sector.

The individual project provides an opportunity for applying specialist knowledge together with analytic, problem-solving, managerial and communication skills to a particular area of interest within the application of IT solutions to problems relevant to the Oil and Gas sector. Working with the full support and guidance of an allocated project supervisor, you will be given the opportunity to propose, plan, specify, develop, evaluate, and present a substantial IT project.

The course prepares students for a career in IT in the Oil and Gas Industry, both as software developers and service managers.

Aberdeen is home to many multinational oil and gas companies and associated suppliers such as mainstream software houses, IT providers to major oil-related companies, specialist software consultancies, and venture capital start-ups.

The course has been meticulously designed to meet the demands of the sector and to tackle a full range of topics. Specifically, the course offers a dynamic mix of theoretical and practical elements required for effective financial management and investment decision making within the oil and gas industry. The MSc Oil and Gas Finance builds on RGU’s multidisciplinary expertise across the oil and gas value chain to explore the role of the finance and investment function within this spectrum as a means for creating value.

In Semester 1 students study two generic finance modules and two additional modules to provide quantitative finance basis and an understanding of specific corporate finance considerations for the oil and gas industry. Semester 2 further develops the finance and industry specific skills. The skills required for an extensive study into a particular aspect of oil and gas finance will also be developed during this semester. These are essential in Semester 3 when each student will be required to prepare and produce a self-directed dissertation.

Ageing infrastructure from the golden days of the oil and gas and energy industry is now being identified for decommissioning. Some of it is in the North Sea but many other countries are increasingly realising that they need to decommission properly and effectively due to environmental regulation. Building a platform has provided a rapid and continuous learning process since the start of the energy industry but learning how to decommission a platform has now started a rapid learning experience about best practise methods across the supply chain and facilities available to deal with entire platforms and their various facilities are now an important concern.

The degree will cover all aspects of decommissioning process including engineering, legal, environmental regulation, business and project management risks and challenges across the oil and gas industry, You study the important aspects of offshore subsea systems, well plugging, offshore installations, project evaluating and economics, environment impact assessment process an regulation, and a group project in comparative assessment. You also look at process shutdown and disposal. This is a highly complex area due to the level of environmental contaminants and different types of facilities to take down.

Students pursuing the LLM in Oil and Gas Law have the opportunity to study an impressive and diverse choice of subjects of relevance to this growing area of law, enabling them to study and understand the complex legal features of the petroleum industry.

The LLM in Oil and Gas Law course is built upon the wide range of high calibre research produced by the members of the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law, who are also teaching at the LLM in Oil and Gas Law. Teaching is research-led and practice-driven aiming at producing global graduates educated and equipped for distinguished personal and professional achievement. Teaching methods are geared towards our students’ needs, conducted mainly through seminars and tutorials in small classes.

The LLM in Oil and Gas Law requires commitment to study throughout one calendar year. Students are given the opportunity to develop a number of important skills which are not only essential to those wishing to become lawyers but are valuable, transferable skills in themselves in other employment contexts. The Department of Shipping and Trade Law offers its postgraduate students dedicated resources, including IT facilities and teaching rooms. Students are fully supported by the College's dedicated Law Librarian and the Law Library holds an extensive selection of legal materials and on-line services such as Lexis and Westlaw. Students are encouraged to make full use of the facilities offered by the Postgraduate Faculty and, in particular, to take advantage of training sessions run by the Faculty, such as the legal research methods and Employability sessions, as well as of the Visiting Lectures’ series.

Modules

The LLM in Oil and Gas Law is modular, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances, a student may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts: Part I consists of 4 taught modules each weighted at 30 credits.

Oil and Gas Law students are required to take four modules from the following list. It is compulsory for students on the LLM in Oil and Gas to study International and Transnational Aspects of Oil and Gas Law . Students will also be required to take 3 modules from the rest of the modules listed below:

The LLM Research Projects will customarily be researched and written up over the summer period and are designed to enable LLM students to develop their research skills.

The Department of Shipping and Trade Law employs two dedicated LLM employability officers who run a series of talks to develop the skills of LLM students and inform their career plans.

For example, Holman Fenwick Willan (HFW), one of the foremost shipping and commercial law firms in the world, has very generously agreed with Swansea Shipping and Trade Law Department to sponsor the best student in Oil and Gas Law. The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) provides training programmes for London City solicitors, P & I (protection and indemnity) Clubs and shipping organisations. The Swansea LLM is well known internationally. Many of our graduates secure employment shortly after completing their degrees. One of the unique online study features of this course is its flexibility, so that you can learn at your own pace and at times to suit you. Study options are:

•Online distance learning, full-time fast track mode. This is suitable for those not engaged in full-time employment OR for professionals who are willing to reduce their working commitment to part-time while studying for the degree.

•Part-time distance learning mode for those wishing to study and continue working full-time.

The course is taught at Aberdeen Business school full-time on campus and online by distance learning or can be studied part-time (for online distance learning ONLY).

Globally there is an increasing demand for skilled petroleum geoscientists who can provide the quantitative, reservoir-focused geoscience skills needed by the hydrocarbon industry to maximize the rate of production and optimize recovery (total oil/gas) from a field. This MSc reflects the slow change of emphasis from exploration to production geoscience in mature basins such as the North Sea and Europe's Atlantic Margin.

The MSc in Petroleum Reservoir Geoscience at Liverpool is unique in the UK and links in closely with oil and gas industry professionals to develop graduates with specific knowledge and focus on the reservoir side of Petroleum Geoscience. This new MSc develops Geology, Geophysics and general Geoscience knowledge and skills, giving you the opportunity to gain expertise and experience to prepare you for your future career.

This MSc will explore the basinal context of petroleum reservoirs and introduce you to petroleum economics and risk & uncertainty analysis. You will gain in depth knowledge of how to define the shape, structure, stratigraphy and volume of reservoirs using remote sensing and geological models, as well as how to define rock properties with advanced seismic techniques. You will work with petrophysical data acquired from wells, to develop your understanding of structure and stratigraphy of the reservoir and incorporate data from drill-core.

In addition, you will develop your knowledge of reservoir sedimentology, fluid geochemistry and dynamic data analysis and simulation to refine the geological model. You will also use learn about using appropriate outcrop analogues and correlation techniques.

Outcrop studies and field work will include visits to rural and coastal locations around the UK (from northern Scotland to southern England) at sites where many of the reservoirs in the North Sea and other UK basins outcrop at the surface.

Guest lectures from world leading experts in academia and industry will be held throughout the course and give you the opportunity to incorporate the latest techniques, challenges and requirements for petroleum reservoir geoscience into your studies.

The 12-month course runs from September and consists of a taught component and a dissertation, totaling 180 credits.

The taught component represents 120 credits and is organised into two 12-week semesters with assessment or examinations at the end of each semester in January and May. The remaining 60 credits are allocated to the research project.

Assessment is by a combination of: examinations, coursework, teamwork, assessed field work and presentations and an individual dissertation.

Oil and gas law gives you a wide range of knowledge to manage the affairs of international oil and gas companies within the full spectrum of law careers plus the knowledge to work within regulation and offer expertise in case law developments within the various environmental laws involved at government level. This is a specialist area of environmental law in which you study the hydrocarbon industry in terms of corporate liability and responsibility, downstream energy law, investment and arbitration law which is relevant when working with other companies on high risk exploration areas. This is an internationally relevant programme due to the nature and operations of the oil and gas industry.

It develops professional levels of skill in key subject areas by building on a foundation of first degree level scientific and mathematical skills. Another related complementary course is our MSc Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering which is aimed at students who wish to work in the Oil and Gas Industry with particular focus on offshore operations such as exploration, drilling and production. Your programme of study

Oil and gas law gives you a wide  range of knowledge to manage the affairs of international oil and gas companies within the full spectrum of law careers plus the knowledge to work within regulation and offer expertise in case law developments within the various environmental laws involved at government level. This is a specialist area of environmental law in which you study the hydrocarbon industry in terms of corporate liability and responsibility, downstream energy law, investment and arbitration law which is relevant when working with other companies on high risk exploration areas. This is an internationally relevant programme due to the nature and operations of the oil and gas industry.

Courses offered cover licensing and other methods of state control of hydrocarbon resources, commercial contracting, regulation of the oil and gas industry, principles of environmental law and maritime planning. The intention is that by the end of the programme you will have developed the analytical skills and knowledge to provide you with a firm foundation for work in this sector. The programme provides you with the opportunity to examine and critically assess key legal issues in the oil and gas sector both in the UK and in other leading jurisdictions. This programme specifically allows you to acquire a portfolio of professional skills which involve extra classes and simulated practical experience. This allows you to apply your skills directly to situations involving immediate application.
