COURSE SUMMARY

This internationally recognised course has been designed to meet the educational needs created by the ever-increasing challenges facing occupational health and safety practitioners. Modules have been designed to enable development of the intellectual analytical skills appropriate for health and safety professionals in the 21st century, and address the risks of disease injury and the design and manufacture of work equipment and systems.

Designed both as a relevant vocational qualification for those seeking occupational safety and health-related employment,  as well as to meet continuing professional development needs; this course is recognised by ISOH as satisfying the academic requirements for graduate membership.

At the University of Salford, much emphasis is placed upon the development of professional skills and capabilities. Your employability is developed through project work with external clients and through opportunities to work on specific business problems as part of your dissertation. In addition, academics from this course have links with safety, health and environment professionals through the Manchester Occupational Health and Safety Group which organises seminars and provides networking opportunities, allowing you to build relationships with professionals from a similar background .

This course seeks to develop graduates who are able to play a leading role in the strategic development and implementation of policy initiatives within industry. Our Occupational Health and Safety alumni are actively employed in various sectors both in the UK and overseas. COURSE DETAILS

This course involves engagement with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of occupational safety, health and well-being.  Modules address existing and emerging challenges and review contemporary management and regulatory systems designed to reduce risks.  

A feature of this course is applied learning and an emphasis on authentic, experimental problem based learning ensuring that students learn from their experiences while they are supported in reviewing the progress of their own learning.

For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively.

This course comprises four taught core modules complemented by a research dissertation.      

For part-time students, the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May.  Year 1 involves the study of two core modules, delivered throughout the year.  Year 2 involves the study of one core module in semester one and one in semester two. During your third year of the course you will complete a dissertation.

TEACHING

This course is delivered through lectures and seminars, with students utilising case studies and completing assignments as the course progresses. We place a strong emphasis on students discussing and exchanging their own professional experiences with the course team and invited specialist speakers to encourage collaborative learning. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with an organisation and/or relevant stakeholder on a real project which will provide networking opportunities with external clients as well as real world context for what you are learning.

The MSc in Occupational Psychology, run by the Institute of Management Studies, will equip you with the knowledge and skills to begin considering these questions. The programme has been designed in line with British Psychological Society (BPS) Division of Occupational Psychology (DOP) requirements and has been accredited since 1995. We recently updated our programme content in line with the 2014 changes to the DOP Occupational Psychology curriculum and, as of September 2014, we are teaching in line with the new curriculum.

Modules & Structure

Structure

The MSc programme runs for one year, starting in September. Most lectures and seminars are in the first two terms of the academic year, however the programme is structured in such a way that you are expected to pursue your studies beyond formal term times. Apart from the individual module-units listed in the syllabus, you will be required to attend other seminars and workshop series.

As far as is practicable, the majority of lectures and seminars will be timetabled for Mondays and Tuesdays.

Occupational Test User Training

(Formerly known as Level A and B training)

During your MSc you will be provided with the opportunity to partake in training that will allow you to qualify for the BPS certificates in “Test User: Occupational, Ability” and “Test User: Occupational, Personality.” This qualification recognizes you as an expert in the administration, scoring and interpretation of ability tests and personality questionnaires. Your training will be delivered by Criterion Partnership, a world-recognised authority on objective assessment.

Research Project (60 credits)

The research dissertation requires you to execute and document an original research investigation. The focus can be on any area related to occupational psychology, and can take place in either a laboratory or field setting, using a specific population (eg salespersons) or the general public. It is also possible to conduct a piece of archival research (eg meta-analysis), if your supervisor agrees that this is appropriate.

You normally begin the research dissertation in the second term (January), together with necessary literature reviews and research design, and the submission deadline is late August.

Assessment

Your performance will be assessed by formal examinations, essays, presentations, business reports and a research dissertation of not more than 10,000 words.

stress and safety risk assessment procedures
work re-design procedures
designing assessment strategies
training needs analysis
You’ll also develop the analytical skills that you will need as a professional psychologist.

The programme’s success is increasingly reflected in the excellent employment rates of our former MSc students in both public and private sectors. Some students also go on to carry out PhD level study with us to become academic Occupational Psychologists.

You may go on to work as an independent consultant, as an ‘in-house’ consultant for a private or public sector organisation, in a consultancy, or in academia.

Important information about career routes in occupational psychology

For those applicants who have a BSc or a BA in Psychology from a university that is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) (This is also known as having Graduate Basis for Chartership; GBC), the Goldsmiths’ MSc in Occupational Psychology (if successfully completed) will allow you to progress to BPS Stage two training, and eventually attain professional chartership in occupational psychology (if Stage two BPS requirements are met).

For those applicants who have a BSc or a BA in Psychology from a university that is not accredited by the BPS, you will not be eligible for the BPS Stage two training at present, but will nevertheless be welcome to join the Goldsmiths’ MSc in Occupational Psychology. Importantly, it may be possible for you to gain BPS recognition for your non-accredited BA or BSc in Psychology through applying directly to the BPS through this link.

For those applicants who are unable to gain BPS recognition for their BSc or BA in Psychology, and those applicants who have a BSc or a BA in a discipline outside of psychology, you will not be eligible for the BPS Stage two training at present, but will nevertheless be welcome to join the Goldsmiths’ MSc in Occupational Psychology. Applicants in this situation may consider completing a BPS accredited psychology postgraduate conversion course prior to undertaking the MSc in Occupational Psychology. This will permit eventual progression to the BPS Stage two training, if the MSc in Occupational Psychology is successfully attained.

Subjects reflect areas of professional practice and are designed to provide students with an understanding of the management of Health, Safety and Risk. They also take a strategic view of this, and of related areas such as Corporate Social Responsibility, Ethics and the Environment. Entry requirements

This programme is designed for people who already have a suitable combination of academic ability, subject knowledge and work experience in the general area of occupational health and safety.

Admission to the programme is determined by both academic and work experience criteria to reflect the non-traditional routes into the health and safety profession.

Applicants holding a recognised University degree and a level 3 Health and Safety Qualification (NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent) will be eligible to join the Safety and Risk Management Programme at Postgraduate Certificate level.

Applicants who do not satisfy the above will be assessed for admission on the basis of their portfolio of courses undertaken and relevant work experience.

Those seeking admission with advanced standing may include prior learning in recognised courses or work-based experience as entry criteria. Further information is available on request.

Entry to the Postgraduate Diploma will normally follow successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate. Students who have gained equivalent academic qualifications at Postgraduate Certificate level may be accepted onto the course.

Management of environmental, health and safety issues has changed significantly in the past twenty years. The emergence of voluntary standards and codes of conduct, including international standards, coupled with the need to manage costs and limited resources has resulted in a trend to move beyond regulatory compliance. Now, companies work toward sustainability through the use of integrated environmental, health and safety management systems, which are woven into key business processes. Although they are distinct disciplines, environmental management, occupational health, and workplace safety share many technical, regulatory, and organizational characteristics. Today's professionals now need to be educated in all three areas.

Graduates are employed by Fortune 100 companies, environmental, health and safety consultancies, universities, and government agencies such as the EPA, OSHA, and NYSDEC.

Plan of study

The MS degree in environmental, health and safety management provides students with a solid foundation in the managerial aspects of developing and implementing environmental, health and safety management systems that can move organizations toward a more sustainable and socially responsible future. In addition, students gain a solid technical foundation in air emissions, wastewater, solid and hazardous waste, occupational safety and occupational health (industrial hygiene). Elements of sustainability are integrated into most of the core courses and some electives

The program consists of 33 credit hours and may be completed entirely through online learning, or via a combination of online and traditional on-campus courses. The curriculum consists of core courses, professional electives, and a choice of a graduate thesis, project, or exam.

Professional electives are subject to availability and include Fire Protection, Occupational Health, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Industrial Wastewater Management, Air Emissions Management, Occupational Safety, Mechanical and Electrical Controls and Standards, EHS Law, EHS Accounting and Finance, EHS Project Management, and Organizational Behavior and Leadership. Other admission requirements

-Have completed at least 9 semester hours of college-level course work in the sciences, with at least 3 semester credit hours in each of the following categories: chemistry, biology, and physics.
-Submit two professional recommendations.
-Submit two writing samples to demonstrate written communication skills.
-Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work.
-Submit a clearly written one-page statement of purpose.
-Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae.
-Complete a graduate application.
-International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum acceptable scores will vary; however, the absolute minimum score for an unconditional acceptance is 6.5. It is recommended that international students begin the program in the fall semester.

Applicants with acceptable professional certification(s) and/or work experience may have pre-requisite science course work waived.

Applicants without formal academic training or documented experience in air emmisions, waste water, solid and hazardous waste, occupational health, or occupational safety may be required to take professional electives in these areas.

Students without related work experience may complete a graduate cooperative education placement during their program of study. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required; however, applicants may submit test scores to support their candidacy.

It offers a convenient means for nurses, doctors, health and safety advisors or managers with busy work schedules and other responsibilities, to gain a postgraduate degree in Occupational Health.

The emphasis is on common occupational health and safety issues encountered in the workplace.

The course encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking and comparative analysis of occupational health systems and practice. This is done within a structured and dynamic on-line learning environment that provides interactive multidisciplinary learning and the opportunity for mutual support and collaboration. 

Structure

All students register initially for the MSc.

The MSc consists of three stages:

• Stage T1 (first taught stage)
This stage lasts for one academic year, and consists of three 20-credit modules, totalling 60 credits, at Level 7.

• Stage T2 (second taught stage)
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of 2 academic years for stages T1 and T2, and consists of a further three 20-credit modules at least to the value of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 120 credits at Level 7.

• Stage R: MSc research dissertation stage
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of three academic years for the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R), and includes a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc programme.

The total normal duration to complete the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R) is three academic years on a part-time basis, from the date of initial registration on the MSc programme.

You may exit after stage T1 with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), if you have gained at least 60 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for three particular modules.

You may exit after stage T2 with a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip), or progress to the MSc dissertation, if you have gained at least 120 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for four particular modules.

Your dissertation, which will normally be no longer than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, will embody the results of your period of project work. The subject of each student’s dissertation will be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

Assessment

During the taught stages, formative assessment will include online discussions examining specific occupational health issues. Summative assessment will consist of written assignments examining aspects of occupational health theory and practice, enabling the student to critically appraise the context and scientific literature, demonstrate a detailed understanding of the topic and reflect on how their new knowledge will affect their practice.

The MSc dissertation stage will be wholly assessed based on the final dissertation. Expectations for the format, submission and marking of the dissertation will follow the current Senate Assessment Regulations, supplemented where appropriate with additional requirements of the Programme/School/College and any specific requirements arising from the nature of the project undertaken.

During the Master’s stage you will be expected to keep in regular contact with your supervisor. You will also complete a progress report every two months in conjunction with your supervisor.

Career Prospects

At present there is a shortage of occupational health clinicians/practitioners of all levels in the UK. Although this course will not give you formal professional accreditation, it provides the opportunity to gain a sound basis of knowledge for practice, and demonstrates a commitment to your own further professional development in occupational health.

For qualified doctors wanting to enter specialist training in occupational medicine, the Postgraduate Diploma stage of the course will provide knowledge of the bulk of the topics needed for part 1 of the Membership Exam of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM). Occupational hygienists are employed in a wide range of industries, including the petrochemical industry, manufacturing, mining, aero-industry, service sectors and the health sector. Many hygienists are also actively involved in research in a range of related fields. Currently, there is significant demand from large multinational companies, and there is a worldwide shortage of trained occupational hygienists.

This programme covers all aspects of occupational hygiene, and any student registered on it will be expected to complete a dissertation based on an occupational hygiene topic. A student on this programme may apply for research funding from the British Occupational Hygiene Society to cover costs associated with his or her research project.

Significant emphasis is placed on learning and research. One of the first courses students take is Critical Thinking, which provides them with all the skills necessary to take full advantage of their studies.

COURSE DETAILS

You will be engaged with a number of ideas drawn from law, economics and the social and physical sciences which are of relevance to the theory and practice of environmental and public intervention. Modules address existing and emerging challenges and explore contemporary management, technological and regulatory systems designed to reduce environmental risks.

A feature of the course is applied learning and an emphasis on authentic, experimental problem based learning ensuring that students learn from their experiences while they are supported in reviewing the progress of their own learning. 

For the MSc, the full-time and part-time routes comprise three 14-week semesters or five 14-week semesters, which you can take within one or three years respectively.

Within the full-time course, you will study four taught modules as well as completing a dissertation. Three modules are compulsory with two studied in semester 1 and the remaining one in semester 2. For the remaining module in semester 2 you have an optional choice, see below for available choices.

For part-time students the taught components span two academic years each consisting of two semesters between September and May. Year 1 involves the study of two core modules. Year 2 involves the study of one core and one optional module. During your third year of the course you will complete a dissertation.

For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules:

• Individual & Organisational Change H&S (10 Credits): Appraise factors which influence organisational response to the management and performance of health, safety and wellbeing.
• Management of Safety Performance (20 Credits): Identify and appraise proactive and reactive approaches to managing, monitoring, reviewing and auditing safety performance in the workplace.

- Acoustics Laboratory
You’ll have access to some of the most specialised facilities in the country, including a reverberation room, anechoic chamber and audiometry room. We also have modern noise analysis equipment for you to use.

- Library
Our libraries are two of the only university libraries in the UK open 24/7 every day of the year. However you like to study, the libraries have got you covered with group study, silent study, extensive e-learning resources and PC suites.

- Food Inspection Laboratory
Use our hygienic lab to develop practical food specimen inspection skills. It features a seamless floor, stainless steel fittings, refrigeration units and foot operated hand wash facilities.
